Alpine Borderland is back today! Thanks for that.

With this change, we’ve already tested if spawn trebs work (building trebs from the invulnerability spots around the spawn areas that pour into Northeast and Northwest tower).

They still work. This was a prime exploit that much of the WvWvW community asked to be fixed because it allowed you to constantly treb NE and NW tower (even GARRISON!) with trebs that are very difficult if not impossible in some cases to counter.

It isn’t in the spirit of fair play or sportsmanship that appears to be very important to ANet. With the recent changes to DBL being so quick, I imagine this will be a quick fix (in short, expand the area at which siege can not be thrown to be farther out from spawn then it currently is).

ANet if you care at all about your map rotations and all the hard work you’ve put into updates for both Alpine and Desert Boarderlands please, please, please fix this exploitation of siege placement. Not only does it hinder game play, but its a clear disregard for your development teams to have people exploit and ruin play-ablity. Some would call these people “Fun-suckers” who exploit weaknesses in devs.

In theory this was supposed to get fixed at some point but didnt.

Simply put siege shouldn’t be able to be placed in areas where the enemy cant destroy/damage it or even get to it somehow. The fix is as simple as disabling siege use if you have the “determined” buff that makes you invulnerable or even adding an invisible wall that would block the spawn treb shots.

The spawn trebuchets in the Alpine borderlands are the most egregious of these exploits since it makes taking and holding the north towers impossible for enemy servers. You simply cant counter these trebs: They are built far behind max arrow cart range in a area that gives players “Determined” (it still counts as spawn), they are high enough that counter trebs shots wont hit and they are built behind walls/houses/ledges so that ballista shots cant reach.

Please fix this exploit, it was the one thing I wanted changed with the Alpine Return and the one thing that didnt happen. Sorta ruins an otherwise awesome update.

Fighting in the north on an enemy map with untouchable spawn trebs raining down on you the whole time is absolutely no fun at all. And defending structures in the north on an enemy map is an exercise in futility when they can take down all the walls of the structures before even leaving spawn.

+1, Alpine is awesome and I’m glad to see it back in it’s prime form. I understand this is a move to placate the masses who really just want that same experience back again, but even so those who want that same experience are largely going to be the ones who wanted invuln trebs fixed when the maps originally existed as well. Would be cool to see.

Most disagree Heimlich. It is an exploit though not horribly broken. It is counterable, most things are.

Gunflame was broken for a while. It was an exploit that it double hit, but was still counterable. Does that mean we just leave it and say “well there are ways around it so who cares”. Fair plays says fixing exploits is important.

Massive blob servers have zero to do with exploits, off topic argument is off topic. The argument that you get an exploit if you feel you can’t compete with a large blob is not the solution.

It shouldn’t be a hard fix anyways.

Its an exploit because its in an area where you CAN NOT access as an enemy. It is an exploit because it was caused when changes made to the “determined” buff area you get at spawn during season 2 and it was never fixed.

You say build siege but guess what you can position the trebs OUTSIDE SUPERIOR BALLISTA OR SUPERIOR ARROW CART RANGE and even set them up so that counter trebs cant hit them (they can be set behind walls or the random houses that are in spawn). That doesnt even account that any and all siege that would get build to try counter them is even easier to counter with those same trebs or the fact that with shield generators they are even more invulnerable now.

Its not even about being able to build easily defensible siege near spawn: go ahead and build 1000 catas and trebs and arrow carts from the ledge right under the invuln area to easily take the north towers at least that would be counterable

Fair point, you don’t see it as an exploit, most people do. There hasn’t been a piece of this siege I haven’t found a way to destroy up there, though in some cases your treb skill shots have to be perfect.

As someone else said, if they wanted siege to be built up there, the no siege buff wouldn’t be up there. You have to leap down or to a house and then throw the siege backward; effectively gaming the system. It’s not natural, so again, we see it as an exploit (as we did with the AC abuse years ago with eye infinity or whatever).

I’m on a server that at times has used this; we all call out the people that build it and tell everyone not to refresh the siege. It’s unethical to support what we see as exploits.

Just increase the siege no build condition. Pretty simple.

It appeared for a while that Alpine would not be coming back and it would be silly to spend resources to fix something that is going away.

Since it is back and will be back on a permanent basis, this issue and other glitches/exploits should be fixed.

Some people are, and its unbelievable that they believe they have a right to abuse an exploit. It is irrelevant whether or not it can be countered, its not supposed to occur in the first place, if you see someone using a flyhack does it matter if you can hit them with a bow? Idk why anet did not fix this after all this time, when they intended to bring alpine back into a rotation. The faster its dealt with the better for everyone.

And FYI, it’s extremely entertaining to drain supply out of your guild in particular from citadel trebs. They never seem to move out of the way.

ArenaNet defines an exploit as any deliberate action that provides an unfair advantage over other players or otherwise hurts the game, community, or economy; it does not matter whether the exploit is a hack or makes use of a mechanic (bugged or otherwise) within the game.

Not a L2P issue – it is an exploit and in the terms of service which you “signed” when you installed the game. Know what you are doing in all aspects of life.

It becomes increasingly hard to argue that something’s an exploit when it has been widely known, reported and remains unchanged after nearly four years. At the very least you’d have to say that it isn’t considered an important or significant exploit by the powers that be.

It’s also only really used by servers that losing badly. If you need a Citadel treb to get the northern towers back you are already in deep trouble and it’s hardly going to have any significant impact on the direction of the match.

That said, it’s clearly not intended and ought to be tidied up. I won’t build trebs there or use them if they are placed. It’s just a cheesy tactic that I’d prefer our server didn’t use. You can’t stop individuals building there, though, and once the treb is up people will inevitably use it. Best if the flaw is just removed the way the invulnerable spots that used to plague the camps next to the spawn-in areas were.

I’m not defending here, just pointing out, that the act of camping spawn locations, camps or a spawn tower with a party of 12 against 1 person is an unfair advantage as well, regardless of if or where their seige is, according to this picture atleast, the OP has the upper hand.

If they haven’t addressed it by now, with the literally hundreds of threads about it over three years, then Anet clearly views it as a viable play.

I don’t personally like it. It feels cowardly, but eh, find work arounds.

I had no issue with the bottom of cliffs neutral zone at south camps … If you’re dumb enough to walk into the invul zone, you should die … But this particular one affects property (aka towers).

Still, they got rid of the cliff south camps zone.

Frankly, it just indicates a lack of skilled player that uses the spawn treb. I’d be embarassed to get caught using it.

Personally I like it. Cause you can only get to those points in your own BL it sort of gives you a “Home Team Advantage”. Personally I wouldn’t mind being able to build seige weapons in a place where they can only be destroyed by other seige weapons. Hell, this exploit is really just one step from Tower/Keep Seige. The only difference is that it’s possible to melee them.

Let me say I am decidedly not an expert on this situation. I do not speak for the WvW Team here in any way. Is all that really, really clear?

Ok then — and please don’t flame me for this —

In this very thread, which I have read with great interest, there are details of a counter, a means to react to the trebs in the placement that seems to be a prime point of concern. So I can’t help but wonder two things:

  1. Is the counter viable?
  2. Can something be called an exploit if there’s a reasonable counter?

I truly do not know the answer to either question, but I’m genuinely curious about it and it’s easy to see that opinions vary.

So… thoughts?
