Annoying Sound Bug
For me changing quality didn’t have the desired effect alone, I also had to change it to run at most stable for latency as well it seems. Which is fairly odd considering my DPC latency never jumps above 250 microseconds when playing GW2 at highest quality settings :/
Using a Asus Xonar Essence STX.
When I’m playing WvW I’m really playing LSD.
Same here.
Left the game running with this sound for a while and it crashed completely.
I’m still getting random voice clips playing, particularly after using a waypoint to travel. It’s less than before, but not gone.
Unfortunately, we’re still having problems identifying the root cause of this issue. If there are exact steps you can take to reproduce this bug, please let us know!
On that note, please be sure to keep this thread on topic and only with information related to the “siren” sound bug. If you have other audio bugs to report, please create a separate thread. Thanks, everyone!
Any news on this one Jason? been over 9 days since your last post.
Is this fixed? I’ve got the very same problem 2 days ago in Dragon Fight event, had to restart GW2
Still happening (every time after 20-30 min of WvW for me) and I think it has to do with the rain of arrows sound at large sieges..
Also getting this issue.
Happens during all dragon encounters. Sad part is it will actually lock out certain aspects of the game and cause me to fail these events. Love spending 10 minutes on an event only to get screwed out of my reward by akittensound bug. =/
This still happens to me, usually when fighting in big groups (WvW, Boss Events, ect…) I run firefox as my browser, and have teamspeak running in the background. All my drivers are up to date.
Just got this for the first time today in WvW, twice now. Once when using the greatsword AOE on guardian, and the 2nd time when i used heart seeker on my thief, both large battles
Got this again just now, end of the chain to open the Gates of Arah dungeon.
I am not sure if my problem is related but I will post it here.
After about half an hour to one hour in the game I suddenly hear a loud bang which lasts about a second but will repeat itself at irregular intervals. I can only turn sound of to still enjoy the game a bit.
It happens randomly, so it is not related to a specific moment in the game. I play PvE
When playing the Betas I never had the problem but since got my new computer with Windows 7 instead of Vista it happens.
Computer has realtech onboard sound, Win 7, i3470 processor, HD788o graphics
It does not happen during any other games!
I’m not sure if this is hardware-related, but a strange pulsing noise (like a slow “wuuw”) happens when in certain events (like the dragon one, in Frostgorge Sound). It seems to be related to the amount of people within the area, doing the event. Though usually the game continues to play fine despite the sound problem, it sometimes crashes (and indeed, I have sent multiple crash reports concerning this issue). This could possibly be related to:
- The event itself
- The amount of people doing the event
- Sound issue concerning the event and the people doing it (ie. too many sounds playing at once, perhaps at a certain point in the event)
The issue persists until the game is completely restarted.
If it’s relevant, my computer uses nVidia High Definition Audio. Also, here are the settings for my audio in-game:
I have exact the same problem! I already made a report but up to now i didn’t get any response from the support.
I normally play with the “lowest latency” sound-option…and then the sound crashes in the above mentiond big events…if you put it on “most stable” BEFORE the event the sound will not crack…at least in 9 out of 10 times. Still…if the number of players, and therefore effect sounds, is to high the sound will crash anyway.
Hope they will be able to fix this.

i’m still having the siren problem with a Asus Xonar DG card.
I have this too, similar to a bomb siren, kind off… It was definitely the gw2 client. I checked other sources. One it came though, it would never leave until I restarted the client. No clue as to what triggered it.
Sirens, splat sounds, cannon balls… have it all. It is annoying, but a restart of the game usually solves the problem for at least 30 minutes.
Its like those sounds are supposed to be background noices but sound volume is increased by 200% or more and then they get “stuck”.
I had the siren sound in a massive WvWvW fight. I googled the issue and people were reporting that the sound quality is the likely cause even with good hardware. I turned my sound quality down from Highest Quality to “normal” (as in middle of the bar). Haven’t had the issue occur to me again since.
Someone on that video said to lower the sound quality.
I’ll have to try this myself, I get the same bug!
I used to get that bug when doing WvWvW with big zergs around, until I lowered the sound quality; haven’t had it since.
Hopefully this gets patched in the one that’s coming in an hours time, really drops the quality of gaming especially when I just got a new pair of headphones
This happened at Frostgorge Sound dragon boss area as well. Something gone wrong when there are too many sounds to process.
I have an Asus Xonar DX
(edited by DJRiful.3749)
happaned again during an event in caledon forest with a newly created character.
Oh my god lol that noise is annoying…watching the videos. I never had it happened to me yet and I have been no lifing the game for 250 hours and been in really huge groups. The only thing that screws up for me is in a REALLY huge group the sound overlaps itself so it sounds like a annoying bad echo.
not happened now since i turned sound quality i think down to 50%
I haven’t encountered this particular sound issue, the one I am facing is that sound stops every few seconds for 1 second.
It’s clipping/shuttering issue and it’s annoying but they said it’s a known issue. Hopefully they weren’t reffering to the issue of this topic but the one I described.
Let me say the solution again. DROP SOUND QUALITY A DIAL UNDER HIGHEST. I never had it since i did that.
Unfortunately, neither all-caps or your suggestion works in this instance – at least not for me. I’ve specifically played around with the settings – not just the quality settings but also audio latency settings, and today, while fighting the Statue of Dwayna in a meta event with approx. 20 or so players, I got this siren sound bug again.
The only option that remains, is the lowest quality – and I’m not even going to go there, because if an option for high and the highest quality exists in the game, it should function. My system is more than capable of handling multiple channels of 24/96 – I do sound mixes on projects every day, so it can’t be a system/sound card spec issue. This problem is also unique to Guild Wars 2.
I’m sure the folks in ArenaNet’s audio department is trying to find the culprit behind this bug. Hopefully, it will reveal itself soon … it puts a major dampener on WvW and PvE meta events, and just game-play in general.
Just had this bug for my very first time in Cursed Shore.
Win XP, 32 Bit, Realtek HD Audio Adapter
My audio settings have never been maxed (they are on LOW) and no fiddling redeemed the problem. Trying to update my audio drivers right now. Maybe this’ll prevent it from happening again..
Oh this sound! I heard this once. It scared the crap out of me too. I thought it was coming from my computer. It has that perfect tone and didn’t sound like it was coming from my speakers even when I put my ear right up near them.. Man was I freaking out.
» My current Guild Wars 2 game annoyances
I get this bug occasional too, during the dragon fights.
Solution to sirens: reduce sound quality one notch in options and restart game.

How am I supposed to lower my audio settings when they have been on the lowest setting to begin with? So … naaah …
I just had the same problem, a strange “pulsing” sound, like a siren of warning in a vault or something! And I had it before, so this is the second time.
It is the same sound from this YouTube video:

Any chance Ventrilo may be related to this problem?

I’ve heard a strange series of sounds that was similar to an airport – like large engines and wind – that at first I took to be a nearby event, until it lasted…and lasted, and lasted. one day I twice heard what sounded to be a child’s train whistle, I thought I was going crazy. ….I’m still not sure that part isn’t true.
I get this too but only on Claw of Jormag requiring a restart to fix.
To Rok above I don’t have Ventrillo installed.

I made another post awhile ago didn’t know about this one but that is exactly the noise.
Again, not sure if this is related, but if anyone on the thread is running nVidia graphics cards, can you check in Device Manager, under “Sound, video, and game controllers”, do you have some something like “NVIDIA High Definition Audio”?
Right clicking that and clicking “Disable” has made a great difference with me in minimizing random non-crashing, short freezes; basically like a jittery freeze that doesn’t crash the game, but did worry me. I’m still not 100% sure of this change will help with the “pulsing siren” bug we have in GW2, but I’ll post again if it seems like it makes no difference for this specific problem. For now, though, it seems to improve performance a little, so try that if it is relevant to you, and please let us know if it seems to help you avoid the pulsing siren for a lot longer than you’re used; any sign like that.

Mmm … that’s quite an interesting idea. I don’t really need the audio portion of HDMI, so I guess there won’t be any harm disabling them. I’ll test it out, thanks.
Add me to the list of people with this annoying bug. It always happens for me during large group/boss type battles.
Sometimes I can continue to play with it, but most times as soon as I activate the chat window to vent about the issue the game immediately crashes to desktop.
Please fix this ANet!!!
I am still getting this bug, it is horrible. Very hard to play the game with this audio. Any solution?
On board sound here, just had the same problem in WvW and had to log in the middle of a battle.
problem still exists. happens to me at least once a day in big fights
love that siren. eeee-ooooo—eeeeee-ooooo
Whenever it happens it makes me just want to pull over in the right lane until it passes
Get this every single time I fight Claw of Jormag, sometimes it causes a CTD and sometimes it doesn’t.
Claw of Jormag event starting?! Let’s roll the dice…
Just got this today while fighting in wvw, really annoying as I had to just mute the game as restarting wasn’t an option :/
I keep getting this. Any Fix?
Confirmed as in this post.
System specs:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Sound card: Asus Xonar D1
Sound card driver: UNi Xonar Unified Driver ver. 1.61 (1800)
Underlying driver ver. 7.12.8.1800
Guild Wars 2 and the driver are configured to output 5.1 surround sound.
Audio quality is set to highest, audio mixing buffer to fastest.
Further observations:
In massive battles some sound samples are skipped / not being played back correctly (e.g. the rifle shot sound).
Edit: Clarified driver versions.

I have the exact same issue. Happened 4 times today, starting to get annoyed….
I did what others have suggested and dropped my audio setting in GW from highest quality to one notch less. I haven’t seen the issue return, though I haven’t done many extensive battles since… I did some zerg runs in Orr, where it happened to me a couple of times, but all was good after the change.
If you guys have not done that yet, I would suggest doing so to see if it fixes your issue.
same bug during WvWvW
