I had this issue, I turned down some graphics options and they went away (also had this issue on very first try of the game in pre-release, I think, but not so sure, shaders on high can cause this, at least they stopped for me when i turned it down)

If you notice though, it’s not just the sound but the characters lips dont even move (in storyline) for when the sound doesn’t show, and they do when it does show (or hear rather)

Same problem. The issues seems to be tied to lag for me, as felt like having a bit higher ping during the times these script holes happen(mainly weekend US afternoon time frame).
Is the script for the conversations handled on the server? Probably.

I just did Here, there, everywhere and at the end where Zojja talks, her last 2 lines of dialogue were completely gone. I’m a lvl 10 asura. I also noticed it on my lvl 32 human, but I don’t remember the quest. Yes, I’ve noticed significantly more lag since the last patch, but I don’t see how you can’t duplicate it, since it’s like every story and at least every other dialogue box that pops up. When I continued on with my asura to speak to Zojja after the ‘here there everywhere’ she said one line and none of her others. Very frustrating.

Just make a female slyvari and talk to Caithe right at the beginning-> missing audio
When you make a male sylvari and talk to Caithe right at the beginning-> no missing audio.

It’s not lag, it started very recently and it’s consistent for NPC voice overs for all personal story and scouts regardless of race, level or step. As others have noted it started with either the most recent update or the one before that. Prior to the update, everything always worked 100%, now I never hear whatever is the first line of NPC dialog and miss another 30% or so of additional lines. As others have said, just start a new character. I rolled a Sylvari Mesmer last night, probably 50% of the dialog in the “dream sequence” was missing – thankfully I’d heard it all properly before with my warrior – and the very first scout was completely silent. After I’d had key sequences for my engineer and ranger messed up earlier this weekend, that was the final straw. I’ve simply stopped doing all personal story for now, no sense when what sense of flair and immersion there was is completely gone with this bug. It just becomes the equivalent of skipping over the flavor text for quests, only its ArenaNet doing the skipping for me when I didn’t ask them to.

Thanks for the information, everyone! We’re continuing to investigate this issue, but haven’t been able to consistently reproduce it on the noted story steps. One of our first suspicions is that it could be related to lag causing the audio not to play.

Can anyone verify whether you’ve also noticed lag coming up more often? Thanks again!

A latency indicator in game, like GW1 had, would help to identify any lag people might be experiencing.

I’d also like to add into this that my stories have been having this problem. Sylvari and Asura, at different levels in different places. It’s any time there is a cut scene, some of the dialogue simply doesn’t play. The characters even stop talking, their lips no longer move. The text displays but no audio.

I certainly am not lagging. I generally have very responsive controls and ability use. I do, however, run GW2 on an SSD, which makes loading times much faster than normal.

On my Norn Female Mesmer, Eternity Star, every single story mission I’ve done so far was missing voiceovers on random (usually the first) line of text in the cinematics, and sometimes even text spoken by NPC while running around/fighting. I would see their text bubble but no sound. I did notice this started occurring after the last patches we had last week.

It is not lag. There is no video or any other slow down. Just missing audio for the dialogue.

And again it was working fine. Every cut scene worked perfectly until about 2 updates ago.

So if it is lag, why would it just be happening now, and not right from the start when everyone was bunched together?

I’m doing most of the story with a friend. We both have different stories but are playing the same race. At a certain moment in both our stories there was a bit of overlaps. A part of the dialogue was being used in both our stories but it branched a bit after. We did my friends story first and that part of the dialogue worked fine. When we did my story however the audio was missing. (I think there were still some missing audio parts in the dialogue that wasn’t the same)

The dialogue happened when we first get invited to talk to the tree. My friend had just defeated the green dude and I just saved the white stag.

I hope this helps a bit.

edit: just saw the response from Jason King. My friend does play a male character and I play a female character in this particular case. But I do remember missing some audio when playing with my male character.

edit2: I forgot to mention that when me and my friend have this issue we both have it at the same time. When they talk they talk to both of us. when the audio is missing it’s missing for both of us. It’s always the exact same lines. (I can hear a bit through teamspeak as he’s not wearing an headset)

My husband and I are both playing Norns on the lost horn story. We just paired up at level 15 and he went to help me do the level 14 quest, which he had already done. He had no problems with it when he did his own (solo). While we were doing it, the audio was missing for the exact same parts for both of us at the exact same time. We were synched up pretty close and definitely not having any lag problems. My character is female (warrior). His is male (ranger). He noted that he’d never seen the problem before. I have seen the problem on all characters I played over the weekend. I don’t remember seeing this prior to that last patch on Sep 14ish or maybe the one prior to that, though that may have just been luck.

For me it does – albeit much more rarely. My female Norn is also sometimes silent, just like the NPCs. What I really notice, though, is that it’s not only the audio that does not play, but also the animation. Characters remain in their default animation, instead of a speaking one.

It’s started for me recently also. I’ve noticed it on both my human and Norn characters. Both are around the same level (20s). Both are at the point where they are getting to know the Orders (priory, vigil, whispers). Dialogue goes missing at the beginning, and sometimes during these scenes. I don’t recall this happening when I first started playing. Since my game has been a little bit buggy (memory errors… only with GW2), I was chalking it up to that, but the search shows I’m not alone.

Female human here, so maybe we are on to something. Can anyone confirm if males are (consistently) getting this bug too? What’s strange is even the scouts will say like the first syllable and then be silent. (And like I said before, about half my story dialogue is missing, though my character voice almost always speaks)

Edit:
Also, I doubt it’s lag. I’m running everything on ultra/high at good framerate and I have very low latency to GW2’s Texas servers.

Human female thief. Used to be fine, but in the last 3-4 days VO dialogue does not play. There is the text and time delay, but the actor does not animate and the voice over does not play. Seems to be primarily NPCs (haven’t noticed any of my characters dialogue missing, but could be coincidence). Also, no noticeable lag.

It’s not lag… kind of insulting you would imply it is, players know what lag looks like. The audio is skipping certain dialogue lines, I have zero lag problems and am encountering this a lot playing with Norn female and human female. It really breaks any kind of immersion and has made me just stop playing pve until it gets fixed. I’m very surprise a bug this bad hasn’t been hot-fixed yet. Too bad I can’t return this game.

I first created a new female thief character and tested the Perils of Friendship storyline,
but at the last cut-scene with Captain Logan Thackeray the first line and the last line there is no VO which the first line is:

Thanks for coming. Not too busy to have a word with me, are you? I need some information about a thug name Two-Blade Pete.

And the last line is:

It’s asking a lot, but for the hero of Shaemoor, I’ll try. Get Quinn out first. My soldiers will move in as soon as they see trouble.

So I created a new male thief character and tested the Perils of Friendship storyline again, and the cut-scenes work.

Has happened to me recently as well but it only started a few days ago. My characters are all female humans, ranging from level 8 to level 55 and they are all experiencing random silence in story cutscenes – some lines are spoken fine and some are not. But this only happened with a recent patch. Previously, all cutscenes were working perfectly, both in live and in every beta I played in. It’s obviously a bug with the patch that needs to be fixed. Definitely not lag, my connection is good and I know what lag looks like by now.

Edit: Also when the voiceovers stop in the middle of a cutscene, the NPC with no voiceover also doesn’t move their mouth like they would if they were speaking.

I just tried this with a Norn male, had no sound issues in the first conversation, and then I tried a Norn female. Had the same conversation and the initial line the NPC says was only missing on the female, not the male.

I have also noticed that the scout dialog seems at time to either be completely missing or parts are missing. Again this only seems to be the case on my female characters, I don’t have many male ones, so I can’t really speak as to weather its only female and not male.

Thanks. Really would like this to be fixed soon, as it has stopped me playing my story, as I really want to hear it all.

All my characters are female, and I’ve noticed this on my human, asura and charr personal storylines. It happened much more for my Charr thief (female, Subterfuge, Sorcerous Shaman, Euryale, Ash Legion, Ferocity) than any other character, though. I can’t tell if that’s because it’s specific to that storyline or if the problem has increased since I did my human story just after release.

I have repeated some story parts (exited before the end in order to restart) and found that it’s always the same lines missing.

I’ve typed out every line in bug reports so far, including a screenshot of my audio settings in case that matters, though it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

As Leiloni said, the character does not have their speaking animation either when the lines are missing.

Most of the time I notice this happening in cutscenes, but the characters usually speak after the scenes as well, during combat for example. Some of these lines are also missing. I’ve reported these where I noticed them but they are easier to miss.

Edit: just to confirm the above, I made a male Charr thief with the exact same background choices, no issues so far.

  • The Tribune’s Call – Report to Tribune Desertgrave at her office:
  1. Rytlock Brimstone: “Hey, hold on. I know this soldier. Fought Barradin with me. Made legionnaire already. Excellent, excellent.”
  2. Rytlock Brimstone: “Fine. I’m putting a lot of trust in Ash here, Torga, but you’ve got a legionnaire I respect on the job. Because of that, I’ll hold off. For now.”

Missing on a female character, perfectly fine on a male character.

I’ve been helping my partner through his personal story. He is a female necromancer, who up until the lvl20 stuff has been helping Quinn and fending off White Mantle. Almost all of the cutscenes have missing dialogue, and he’s bug reported each one. We then went and tried our female Norns, the very first cutscene (first person you talk to) has her dialogue missing, followed by the person you return your trophy to (I remember his dialogue being fine in the betas) and Knute too. We were in the same party for the starter Norn stuff but did not talk to the person at the same time, so the missing lines appeared for both of us. Last week we played my female necro’s story up to lvl21, and we had no missing dialogue.

Also wanted to point out: the character’s mouth do not move when this problem happens, I’m not even sure they move their arms. It’s never ever very rarely your personal character. It happened to virtually any NPC character, Two Blade Pete, Logan, Quinn, Anise, and a bunch of the soldiers. I can confirm that Pete, Quinn, Logan ect all worked just fine on my baby male Thief’s story.

I’ve had this as well, it’s usually the npc voices missing not mine, and usually at the start of the “conversation”. I’ve had it on both human and sylvari (haven’t really done any others) and it only seems to have been happening since the sept 14th patch. I was playing with my partner and joining him on his storyline, we both found the same lines of dialogue missing, he hadn’t noticed it before either. As our PCs are totally different I think this is a GW problem not something to do with our PCs.

-Participate in the Big Brawl final match near Lake Mourn.

Not sure if the bug progressing, also would confirm that only happens of female chars, as my male asura having no issues so far. I’m another with all female characters. Last night I was taking screen shots so that I could go back later and submit bug reports with the text (as suggested). There were at least 12 screen shots by the time I got done catching up on the personal story lines, and I didn’t have time to transcribe them.

Things I noticed:
-It happens approximately every other speaker change. One of the speakers will have the audio, the next won’t, repeats.
-It more frequently happens with the NPC’s, although it did happen to my character once.
-The animations do not stop entirely…they will still gesture, but the lips stop moving. One time an NPC froze up completely while her dialog was going on.
-One time the wrong NPC was on the screen with his text lines while audio from one of the other NPC’s played. During that time, the visual NPC froze in place.

There is nothing particularly special about my characters. They are at various levels, classes, races. None of them is equipping any Gem Store armor skins or using special items beyond what has dropped on the landscape or been purchased off the Trading Post.

I am also having this bug — and have been experiencing it on and off for a couple weeks but it’s only in the last week or so that it’s been happening with virtually all conversations. All my characters are female (but I’d be happy to make a male "test’ character just to see if it happens for those, too, if it would help track down the problem.

I very much doubt that lag is an issue for me. My system isn’t cutting edge but it’s not all that far off it. My frame rate >100 at all times. I’m running Vent at the same time with consistent ping rate >45ms and I experience no game related lag at all except very, very rarely in large boss fights with many other player chars.

In virtually every storyline conversation I’ve had in the last week — including this morning after the Sept 17 patch — there is at least 1 or 2 lines of dialogue missing…often even alternating lines where my voice will play fine but the NPC I’m talking to will be missing…or visa versa. Doesn’t seem to be any consistency as to when it’s my voice that’s missing and when it’s the NPC’s voice; and it can sometimes have both missing either back-to-back or at different times during longer conversations.

I’m trying to recall exactly when this bug first appeared because I never experienced this problem with the initial release (and I’ve experienced it on a second character in a conversation that I know for sure didn’t have the bug when I ran it on my first character). I would guess that if first started perhaps 3 weeks ago, possibly as much as 5 weeks ago; but it was very infrequent and I assumed it was a few high level bugs that slipped through during testing. I definitely noticed it as of a week ago when I started a new char and had constant problems with low level quest dialogues that I’d seen before.

Is it possible that some dialogue is being flagged as “heard sound file already do don’t play again” when a character has passed a certain point in the story, and then that flag is treated as a global one that affects all characters belonging to the player so it doesn’t play that audio clip for subsequent characters? That wouldn’t be the cause of all the problems because I know I had it with my L80 when she was finishing up her storyline (which was the first time I’d seen the scenes).

I also noticed sometimes NPCs say things in the world and there is no voice over. Right after they say one voiced-over line, the next will have no audio.

“The flame legion can die in a fire!”
