Audio Problems with all storyline conversations.
also experiencing this, and it’s happening with more frequency the farther I get into the storyline quest. I’m currently experiencing it in my conversations on the story quest Reconnaissance (51). I am a female achura thief doing the Orders storyline, and if it helps, I started with the weather invention storyline.
Running windowed fullscreen in Windows 7 64bit, sound set to highest quality, music interval longer, buffer size 100% lowest latency. I don’t get the feeling that lag is causing it, since there are no other stutters or mix-ups except with this audio.
Yeah, pretty much all of the Asura (female) quests and Norn (Female) quests, the first line of dialogue is skipped and then it resumes playback during the second VO. This is odd because it was working fine until a few patches ago.
Also get this issue, began with the patch late last week.
What I’ve found is that for my Female Human Vigil character every single piece of dialog that addresses the character, either by title (Hero, Advocate, Recruit, Warmaster, etc.) or “My friend” or similar, is missing its dub.
All dialog that does not address the character plays just fine.
Edit: Quickly checking on my Male Sylvari, this did not hold true, and all of the dialog in his Orders of Tyria starting quest played properly.

While working on my female asura I stopped at the quest where you have to choose either the Priory, Order, or Vigil (Field Test (26)) because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to choose. This was over a week ago and all the audio worked fine. Today, I finally decided to continue my personal story, but when I went back to the instance, Zojja failed to speak after the three representatives gave their choices, although she was audible the second time she spoke in the conversation.
I also noticed this bug when I tried to play a female norn…right off the bat, the starting woman wouldn’t say her first line. Funny that the male norn worked fine though. :/
I’ll pipe in and mention that I have the same issue. My male characters have voice in all dialogues. My female characters get missing sound.
It’s interesting to note that NPC voices go silent in every single dialogue of the game – even scouts. The voice of my own character, however, always plays.
Seriously, this issue should be top priority. It kills all joy in playing for the story.
As some have also mentioned i’d also like to share my issues with this. :P
I’ve also had this problem during the story dialog cutting out on NPC’s on my female character, even like Xehlwan mentioned it also cuts out during talks with the scouts.
Does kinda spoil the story experience. :<
EDIT:- Just to point out where i had this problem, it was during the tutorial area for the Asura and again at the first scout you speak to during first part of game.

Level 71 step “Rescue Apatia”: Traehearn was so shocked that we couldnt rescue Apatia, he went mute.

If this is true, then this might be the issue right here that ANet needs to look into. bumping for great justice.
The new fix from today didn’t work.. It’s still the same
I’m in the “Great Hunt” with my female Norn and every NPC in the cutscense has lost some voiceover and animation.
having the same issue with my asura storyline. no such issues as of a week or so ago, but now I’m having it with every scene.
Not just storylines that were having audio problems starting about a week ago or so. There are also the character-falling and some other various ones that i don’t recollect at the moment. Not to mention the random audio loops people ran into about the same time where they had to restart guildwars for it to go away.
And yes, 80% of these issues are female character related.

I saw this reported as fixed in the 18th update. Haven’t been able to play in a few days – can anyone confirm if this has indeed been fixed?
Yeah the ambiant ones are bothersome as well. All of my characters are male but occasionally my characters (all races) say something random with a female voice (no one else is around). I’m starting to question my manhood
It’s happening for every race as I was told, and even in higher level, near-end storylines.
Also, contrary to the patch notes, it is not just female NPCs but male NPCs too. It has become too common, I stopped compiling them all. Especially since it happens randomly.
For example, in one Orr storyline, I didn’t finish it and restarted. The NPCs started speaking, with the mouth moving. But the dialogues where previously they were speaking, this time they weren’t. It’s random.

No, it still doesn’t work. The missing mouth animation and voice overs happens randomly. When I did some tests, the dialogues that bugs out changes.
Also, the patch said “female”, they missed a lot because when I first encountered this bug, I was playing my male sylvari and the first NPCs with missing voice overs and mouth animation were male NPCs.
After that, it became frequent, male sylvari + female NPC = missing. female human + male NPC = missing. female human + female NPC = missing. Again, random dialogues, if you repeat that storyline, there will always be a different dialogue that is bugging and the previous one started working.
In any case, I sent all the reports I compiled and stopped because it’s just too many to handle (so I’m a little bit surprised the patch notes said “female”, probably I was the only one who reported “male” was bugging too).
The issue seems to have been totally cleared up for my female norn warrior. I’m shocked that nobody has said this yet but, thanks guys and gals over at ArenaNet for jumping on this and clearing it up so quickly!
For my female norn, it’s actually not really random. The line doesn’t have audio every time the speaking character says the word “Slayer” as part of the speech. Once I started looking for patterns (with the starting suspicion that maybe it was name-related), no speech every single time “slayer” was part of what was to be said. Only two times so far where speech didn’t happen when “Slayer” was not part of the speech. Unable to confirm at the moment, because my current story line is as an initiate where I haven’t been called “Slayer” by anyone at the Order of Whispers. No problems with missing audio when they call me “initiate.”

I can confirm this… everytime a npc called me “slayer” or “hero”, the audio and animation are missing. No problems with audio and animations in lines without a title.
So this problem is not really random.
This problem is also only on my female characters!! If i create a male character it doesn’t appear. No missing voice or animations.
Please ArenaNet, look into this problem. It’s a really annoying bug and breaking the mood of the storyline
If you want to recreate the bug, just create a female norn and a male norn and speak to “Thora Griffonbane”. You will see what i mean.
For the time being, i will stop playing my personal storyline.
A short respond would be nice… let us know that you are aware of this problem.
I will just throw in my 2c, although I confess I haven’t read the whole thread.
I have this problem too, when playing a female character. It is definitely not just an audio problem though. If you look closely you see that in the “silent dialogues” the silent character’s lips don’t move. Normally when the characters speak they automatically lip synch, but don’t do this if the sound is missing. So it is not just the sound cutting out – it is a bug where the game thinks they shouldn’t even be speaking.
bump…because this is not fixed until now. Please ANet look into this…it’s a really annoying bug.
As above I have same problem, but what really made me mad was last mission. Not to mention last fight was a joke, in the middle of the whole run sound crashed and it sounded like a alarm in a loop, even when I alt-tabbed the game. It was lasting forever so after completing annoying and worst mission in history of games ever I had to restart the game.
And I know this thread’s last post is from 2 month ago, but since nothing has changed I post it now, a little angry after last mission.
Ever since some update (don’t know exactly which one), cutscenes are very laggy for me, and also some text do not appear as they talk.
Ever since patch, I have been watching mute cutscenes in my toons’ personal story cutscenes. I even watched Sieran die. In silence. How tragic is that??
I can’t believe this bug is 2 years old with no solution. I haven’t been experiencing it for that long, but I’ve had it for a while now, and it’s sucking my enjoyment out of the living world story.
I have been playing guild wars since its release, and have played a lot of gw2, and i can’t express how this thing bugs me. I have stopped playing story missions. There is no mouth movement, no voice, only the background music. I have tried uninstalling it, i have changed pcs and the problem still happened, changed sound boards, changed speakers/headsets, have changed all volumes to max, and nothing seems to fix this bug. Please if there is a fix for it that i haven’t found, post it here….
Having this exact same problem. Some lines of the story quests aren’t playing audio. This thread started two years ago…
This has been happening for me ever since trying the Personal Story recently on my Norn Ranger and even in the beta event maps. In a cutscene, either the very first line of dialogue or the first line spoken by a character will have no audio.
Having the same issue; in cutscenes where characters are across from one another over the painterly backgrounds, the first line of spoken dialog is often non-playing. In addition, the personal story quest “The Steel Tide” had this issue and a few others such as: non-displaying dialog options for other players; bugged instances of the charr tanks appearing both at their previous location (Risen mine-exploded front tank event), and their secondary location when progressing the episode (complete with infinite spawns and inability to progress due to required NPC being stuck at previous location); and, upon redo/completion, having the entire personal story quest log “back up” several steps, displaying incorrectly.
Same problem. I am playing the Asuran storyline for the first time and am getting very annoyed at sometimes hearing Zojja speak, and sometimes trying to read her animated lips. I hope this gets fixed soon, because otherwise what was the point of hiring voice actors?!!
This started up about 2-3 patches ago. It always seems to be the first line the NPC speaks in cut scenes. I can confirm this for most Human and Norn story steps. This also occurred in the HoT story demo when Laranthir speaks…. the first speach bubble appears with no audible dialog and then she can be heard upon her second speech bubble. It’s pretty aggravating, especially when you’ve talk your friend up into buying the game and playing the story with them is embarrassing with all the bugs.
Same here. I noticed this issue in the beta weekend as well. I just rolled a new character and every other line in PS cutscenes are muted.
Same issue for me, in the season 2 storyline some people have the bubbles above their heads but you can’t hear them talking.
It seems an update reactivated an old bug…. hopefully we get a response soon. Unlike the removed human female idle animations… this really does destroy muh immersion.
It may just be my system, but the first and last lines of dialogue for every cutscene where characters talk is lacking audio, once the first character finishes their first line of dialogue the second character starts their dialogue with audio, and the audio continues till the last line of dialogue, this has been in the Demmi arc of the order of whispers story as well as the level 30 sylvari story, i haven’t tested the other story instances however.
Similar problem, been going on for about 3 week now, all of my character’s dialogue is voiced but other characters frequently go silent for a line of dialogue or two then return to normal. seems completely random for me.
Same!! It seems to be random on mine, but every section of story has at least 1-2 lines where the audio isn’t there. I’ve noticed it on my char guard & human ele, for at least the last month or so.
ugh… trying to bring my myriad alts up to speed in the old personal story and this glitch is killing it for me. Any word on if this is the same bug as originally reported?

It’s not only the first… I just had a cutscene with Caithe and Trahearne. They were talking one after the other and then back again with the first. I missed the first line of Trahearne, then the first line on Caithe, then the first line of Trahearne again, but not the first line of Caithe when she finished the dialog…
And yes, it’s highly annoying!
I’ve experience this problem on a number of story steps, and was doing those steps in a group with two friends. All of us saw the same dialog missing, which seems unlikely if it were a lag issue. We were also all on female characters.
Doing LS S2 and I’m getting this as well. It seems that somehow alternating characters talking makes the first VO clip not play back for some of them. I don’t mind so much at the moment since I’m reading the text and will be replaying the episodes, but I won’t be finishing my PS until this is fixed.
Just had this bug at the very beginning of Hidden Arcana and it went like this:
Walked up to Marjory who started talking as I approached.
We overheard Magister Ela Makkay was talking in the room behind her.
We entered the room and the conversation with Ela started but she had no voice until her second set of sentences.

There’s no rhyme or reason to it… the story I just finished (Seeking the Zalisco) had all voice lines, except the very last one…
Having this problem, seems the issue has come back again, hopefully devs will be able to easy fix this if they found the cause in the past. currently going through the ps with a new alt female sylvari, also missing dialog in cutscenes, usualy at the start of convosations but at random times also, getting annoying! also had few problems in the latest HoT beta with ambiant dialog.
Have any of you submitted an in-game report on this? Or a Customer Support ticket? It’s far more likely that this will be escalated through those means than through the resurrection of this old forum thread.
On the other hand, I understand the situation: You believe that a recent build did something to cause audio problems. I can let the QA leads know about it, but without more details and the logs that our CS Team might request from you, it may be difficult for them to kitten. A QA rep may post here, or he/she may look for your details in the in-game logs. But thanks for letting us know!

Honestly, Gaile, I’ve experienced this bug for almost a year on many alts in every single Personal Story instance i’ve done. i submitted bug reports at first, and i thought that maybe it was because i started using my old AMD phenom 2 x4 965 machine (one of the first generation quad core processors) on a x-fi sound card. trouble is, audio gets skipped even on my 17-4930k hex-core processor using default motherboard audio.
if i filed a bug report every single time i experienced this audio issue, i’d never get a chance to play the actual game, from filling out so many bug reports. i gave up on the issue.
and by the way. deleting the local.dat file followed by a -repair has no effect on the issue, as several lines of dialogue in each cinema are skipped, even afterward. all my drivers are up to date. this issue has plagued the game on my hardware regardless of windows 7 pro 64 bit, windows home premium 64 bit, windows 8.1 pro 64 bit, windows 10 home 64 bit, or windows 10 pro 64 bit. i even did a full uninstall – reinstall of the client on one machine… still persists.
it really doesn’t feel like it’s worth the effort to send any info from my PC, for the simple reason that the issue is over a year old, and filing support tickets and waiting for responses sometimes takes weeks on complicated issues. Not to mention the time it takes to “follow the script” of suggested fixes one at a time.
i don’t even know what files to send, and i really don’t care for wasting precious game time going back and forth with support. and game time is very precious to me as a truck driver. i don’t want to spend my home-time dealing with support and trying to fix a problem.
i’d really rather that the dev team start a thread with specific instructions on what info they need to sift through, so that those of us with this issue can simply link or post it in one place, so the dev team has a collective of information relating to the issue, instead of of a bunch of individual reports that the separate support team gives up on after i stop replying to their emails.

I gave up years ago filing reports on the audio mixing in this game. Unless it is something with missing dialogue, in which case, several people have bug reports in the HoT forums.
Just chiming in to say that I’ve experienced the same problem. Pretty much every single story step that I’ve gone through recently has had unvoiced audio issues. So to give an approximate range to the issue, that would be pretty much every single story step from The Orders of Tyria through to Against The Corruption.

been doing bug reports for the last couple of instances will continue to submit them, if they were able to fix it in the past and have a log of what happened it shouldnt be to hard to try find out whats causing it this time. I personaly dont see a connection apart from all characters seem to be female that this problem hits and it usualy the npc dialog thats missing but not always.
I’m experiancing this bug too.
Its usually the first line thats without audio, then it seems to go : on, of, on, of. in a random patern.
I do believe this bug was reintroduced some time around the New LA – Scarlet’s recap. When localised audio was introduced. Just a thought.
