Hello, so I have a problem I encounter only when I play the game from Malaysia. When creating a new character, everything runs smoothly and I can create them up to the very last step where I name them. After naming the character and confirming my creation, it loops back to the Character selection screen (no new character having been created).
I was in a different region of the world a few weeks ago and tried, then everything worked flawlessly.
Now I find myself back in Malaysia and once again unable to create new characters… Is there something I should do to my settings here? Is anyone experiencing the same bug?

I have the same issue from England on the European server. Help please =/

I am also having this exact problem on the Americas server. Any response to help resolve this would be appreciated. I’m a new user so I don’t have any idea of what to do.

Im not entirely sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes;

I have a free slot to make a character.
I attempt to make a character but when Im done with choosing the name, it goes back straight to my character selection screen without warning. I have managed to make my other accounts only becuase all I did was choose race and class and skipped to the end(still sometimes would not work and just go back to character selection screen).

Whats going on? This is very frustrating as I feel its impossible to make another character. Ive repeatedly tried making a female ranger for the past half an hour and has constantly sent me back to my character selection screen. I thought if it was being of the name already be taken, I tried again with a couple of different names. still, nothing.

Also having this problem. Annoying as hell. 6 days and no response?

Goes through if skip to the end.

Posted in another thread but also having this issue. No error code. It’s fine if you skip to end but who doesn’t want to customise their char?

For the people who do have this problem: You might should try it with a proxy (don’t save Network then!!)
It’s not really a solution but a work-around

Got the same bug in Italy, european servers. It’s not region based as it’s happening worldwide.

Please get to solve this asap because i just can’t play with my friends who bought the game westerday, 5 ppl!

moreover, if the game won’t give any errorcode it’s not our fault, it’s a programming flaw, so it’s 2 errors in 1.

I’m having the same problem (I’m in the UK) – no error code, I am just returned to the character selection screen as soon as I name a character an select create. This has happened multiple times and is very frustrating.

This is just great. Just wanted to start playing this game again but cannot create characters. No error message. After creating a name it just goes back to an empty character page. Thank You Arenanet for a great gaming experience

Just a two cents from a simple player….couldn’t it be the keyboard settings ? Looks like it’s mainly Europe and Asia but not America….maybe just some kind of keyboard code that it’s not recognized by the database….maybe try using american english keyboard ?

darkeden, did you need a very long time to create your character?
Can you try to make a “default” character by skipping to the end, just give it a name?
Does that work?

I’m having a similar issue. (East Coast US)

When I click on “Create” in the character selection screen, the screen turns black. Nothing else happens. The music still plays as normal and I can tab out of the window without a problem. The game doesn’t become unresponsive. This happened over night. I tried doing it with two different computers, one being a Mac and the other being a Windows (My personal).

Something occurred early this morning between 5AM CST and 10AM when my friend had logged in an created a new character at 5AM, and I 10AM, his creation went fine, but like many others, I was greeted with nothing but a black screen, no errors, music, and a cursor and absolutely no hangs. I’ve left the client to run for an hour to see if it time would help, it does not. Hopefully a time window helps solve this issue. We are located in SK, Canada.

Me too guys, I can’t create a character. I’ve tried restarting my computer, updating my graphic card driver, changing my settings to low or auto-detect. None of them work. Please help

I’ve been having this problem all day. After selecting “create” from my character selection screen, it just goes to a black screen where all I have is my cursor and music—no error code at all.

I re-configured all of my graphics properties and even completely uninstalled and re-installed the game and still nothing

My problem is the same as Naidarim, both of my kids accounts on 2 computers, once you click create it goes to a black screen, you still have your mouse and music but can’t do anything. you can alt-tab out so it didn’t lock the computer. one of the kids accounts i even tried from my client on my computer and still did it. I don’t have a open character slot to try it on my account. I have updated all drivers, done a -repair and a full uninstall and reinstall on one of them, with no change in the problem. It gives no error code and the mouse is still movable, its almost like its stuck in a loading screen.

Same, no error code, North America, Charter internet. Multiple computers… however; works fine on a different account.

Different account is a recently purchased account during the discount at HoT announcement.

At suggestion on another problem, I loaded the game with -repair option, and it seemed to repair (about a half hour) but no joy, it still goes black. I was just playing with my first character a few minutes before. The only way out of it is to alt tab and close the window.

The trick to get the guesting thing to reset is that you not only have to say you are ‘guesting’ for a different server you have to actually hit ‘play’ while guesting and let the map load for one of your other characters. That seemed to confirm the guesting pass or whatever, and now my character creation screen seems to be fine. Hope that helps!

Only seems to work if you have an existing character, those without a character don’t even have the option to see the world screen and cannot choose to guest or created a character.

I haven’t any character yet. Today I first chose Darkhaven server, then I couldn’t see screen again when i tried to login. After 8 hours I found solution, also for beginners like me. First I cleared Guild Wars folder in Appdata. Then I wrote these commands on cmd:
(you can google if you want to know what appdata folder and cmd are)
-ipconfig/flushdns
-ipconfig/release
-ipconfig/renew

Now I can see the character creation screen.

Similar issue. Load the launcher, hit play, loads a black screen that flickers for 2 seconds, hear the music/see the cursor then boom, “A serious error has occurred.”

I’ve tried:
-reinstalling x2
-repairing x 5+
-changing the location of the files
-updating/restoring/reverting video card drivers
-system restoring (knew it wasn’t going to work but kitten it.)

side note: I got an item restored through customer service, right after, couldn’t log in.

Still can’t create a new character, even after the new patch that just came out. On Darkhaven server, live in Michigan, have Charter Internet. Tried on both my PC and my Mac, neither work. Both get black screen with just cursor/musikittenil the game is force closed. Recently did some server guesting (three days ago).

I am having the same problem. I have one character slot open. I have tried creating a new character at least 5 times today and even did a repair of the game client and I still get a black screen. I have not seen an error code within the character creation screen. Can someone tell me what’s going on? This same problem happened to me back in January but was able to create a character by using my friends desktop. Is there something wrong with the client for laptops?

Same here, two kinds of error in character creation.

Same here as well. Like Teslacannon, the game keeps giving me two different error codes (code=42:22:2:229:101 and code=1010:6:6:459:101).

I have the same two codes granted to me when trying to create a character:

I created a new character just yesterday, but now i can’t. Getting the same error codes mentioned above:

You also can’t use “Name Change Contract”. Everytime you fullfill all requirements for picking a name, you get an error message after several seconds: “Character name” contains words or letter combinations that are not permitted.

So I guess someone has messed up some kind of name check mechanism. That’s why you probably can’t create characters.

For those having issues creating a new character and getting the “Can’t connect to server” or “network error” messages, simply copy the entire game folder and paste it on another hard drive on your machine (assuming you have more than one). When you run it from the new directory, you can create a new character and play with no issues. For those with only one hard drive in their rigs, you’ll have to wait until they fix whatever the problem is :/
