Cannot Dye Transmuted Armor [Merged]
I am also experiencing this. Just tried to remove all my dye 3 times in a row and crashed each time. I sent in crash reports with each one and also a Bug report in game.
ditto, has happed to me 4 times in a row…….
So I decided to dye my town clothing pink – don’t ask why – and when I decided to remove the dye to its normal state, when I close the hero panel the game crashes. Every single time. When I go back to game, it’s still pink.
Does this happen when you remove a specific dye, remove all dyes, or remove dye from a specific armor piece? If you can provide more details or specific steps to reproduce the issue, it would be helpful. Thanks!

I think I found a way to reproduce this (or a similar) crash consistently.
- Remove at least one dye (I did this with my head gear’s upper dye slot)
- Hit ESC to close your character screen
The headgear I use, is called Berserker’s Acolyte Mask of Hoelbrak.
I tried this with a couple other items and color slots and I crashed every single time.
I also am having this issue, I thought it might be a certain rare dye but seems to happen when I even try the standard dyes. I tried it several times changing all colors on cloth armor then using the remove dye button, then closing widow with x button in corner.
happens everytime, I haven’t tried just one at a time yet.
edit: yep just tried it on 2 other characters one leather and 1 heavy same thing crashes
every time doesnt matter if one dye or all dye.
doesn’t matter if I close window with x or close with esc
(edited by kekkan.8273)
I have a video of the crash. I remove the dyes, exit the window. Bam, game crashes.
Bunch of people are having this happen to them. Im thinking its a bug with the new Nvidia drivers, as i didn’t have the issue until i updated. Anytime i change up dyes and X out or hit ESC straight from the dye menu the game will crash. Every time. Only work around ive found so far is to get out of the dye menu and go back to the normal armor screen. If you X out after you go back to the other screen it wont crash.
EDIT – Every dye, every dye slot, every time.
“Im thinking its a bug with the new Nvidia drivers, as i didn’t have the issue until i updated.”
I have a AMD HD 7970.
For me, it crashes whenever I remove a dye and exit the hero page, it crashes. It even crashes when I ONLY click on ‘Remove dye’ and exit. I have also sent in several crash reports.
EDIT: I am going to try to reinstall Guild Wars 2 to see if it fixes itself.

Remove+ Close hero panel = Crash
same for me while removing flame region exotic pieces
Having the same problem as you too, I don’t think its an isolated issue.
Reinstalled guild wars 2, I was able to remove one color section, and after that it started crashing again.
I’ve also crashed twice from this same issue. I was messing around with dye colors and dye remover… close the window and instant desktop. I sent the crash report both times.
Geforce GTX 570 with 306.02 drivers
Having this same issue, just reproduced it by using the remove dye option and hitting escape. I have a GTX 460 with the 306.02 drivers.
I likely hit Escape to close the Hero Screen – I often do – but, most recently, I closed it with the mouse. It also seems to happen almost regularly when I remove all the dyes from all pieces of armor, though I did get a few crashes when I just removed all the dye from a single piece. I don’t think it’s crashed when I’ve removed a single dye from a single piece. I was actually running the old NVIDIA 304.79 drivers, so I’m updating as we speak and will see if it affects anything.
Edit: Well, I tried removing ALL the dye from one piece of armor and closing with both ESC and mouse – it crashed. Tried removing all dyes from all armor and closing with both ESC and mouse – hello, desktop! Unlike before, though, it also crashed when I removed just one of the dyes.
I definitely think it’s just a model issue (briefly reading the crash log). I have the Scale Pauldrons from character creation (Warrior!) along with a Scale Hauberk, Gauntlets, and Legplates from the personal story quests. Wearing Vital Worn Chain Greaves from a random drop. No helmet. This was happening on another, much higher level character too, though. It could be related to just specific pieces of armor, but dang, that’s a lot of armor models for A-Net to check.

Same problem NVIDIA (old beta and new stable versions). Crashes every single time in all characters. Also sent couple of crash reports.
Confirm this happened to me too. Sent crash report. I have older radeon cards in crossfire. From reading this thread, it seems to be character independent, gear independent, dye independent, and system hardware independent.
You can work around the dye removal crash by simply not having the “Remove Dye” action active, and then untoggling the dye editing mode before exiting the hero panel.
Edit: It seems the only thing that causes the crash as far as I can tell is having “Remove Dye” toggled on when exiting hero panel. Simply click another dye color before you exit.

Has anyone having this issue tried Anthem’s suggestion?
I was about to say the same thing.
Also, anyone use H to close the hero panel?
I have experienced this bug too. Removing dye crashes the game.
I just started having this problem today, every time I wanna remove dye and go to save it by closing my character window the game crashes with a send error report.
Worked fine last week but now, it crashes every single time…

I’m positive this can’t be due the new nvidia drivers. My nvidia 630GT with the latest beta drivers wasn’t recieving this. And it’s been out for quite some time.
I tested it out as of today and it happens aswell.

Yeah, seeing as it’s happening across a wide variety of hardware it’s almost definitely something with the game itself. I really hope A-Net doesn’t have to check every armor model :P.
I’m having the same problem, made a thread about it a couple days ago here but the long and short of it is the same as others have said here, it happens no matter which character I’m on or what armor type I’m wearing. 100% of the time, if I use dye remover and then apply the change, it crashes.
Edit: Actually I was logged in while posting this so I decided to check and Anthem is right. If I apply the change by clicking the Toggle Dye Mode button without closing the Hero window, I do not crash, and closing the Hero window afterwards doesn’t cause a crash. If I apply the change by closing the Hero window without clicking that button, then I crash. I checked that before I noticed Anthem’s post, but he seems to be correct that the issue has to do with having Dye Remover as the selected dye when the window closes, because after seeing his post I just tried enabling dye mode and selecting Dye Remover then closing the window without dying anything, and that still crashed the game.

An easy fix would be dye changes aren’t saved unless you hit the dye mode button again.
Also, can someone try to remove dye, then select an actual dye (so that replaces the dye remover “cursor”) and close the whole thing with Escape?

Yes, this works.
If you try to close the character pane after using dye remover (without first re-coloring the items you’ve stripped of color), a crash will happen. If you re-color the portions of your gear first, it works without a problem. It’s almost as if the program can’t remember what the original color was, so it crashes if you don’t pick a new color first.

My separate post on the same bug:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/CTD-after-removing-dies-on-Character-Screen
I can also confirm that if you use dye removal, and then click another dye before exiting, it works. But you shouldn’t have to work around it, it needs to be fixed, and I’m sure they’re working on it.
I submitted crash reports as well; replicating the same issue with the ’’Country’’ light armor set; I even posted a thread about it, that can be found here before I saw this one (and for that, I apologize).
-> Use Dye Remover to remove dye on any slot
-> Press ESC to exit window
= Crash.

We believe we’ve identified the issue causing this and will be testing the fix for this over the next week to make sure it’s stable. Thanks for the help, everyone!

I have tested this numerous times & the resulting game crash is the same.
I wanted to take some preview screenshots of the Racial Armors, so I stood at the NPC, & previewed the sets 1 by 1. However, the dyes didn’t suit the previews, so I used the dye remover to get back to un-dyed on the armor I was actually wearing.
After clicking the last area to remove all dye from all armor pieces, the game crashes. I have repeated this & the game crashes every time.
I think it caused my game to crash as well, I accidentally hit dye remover and then clicked a colour on a piece of armour at which point the game crashed.
this still causes CTD for me.
‘… if you use dye removal, and then click another dye before exiting, it works..’
for me the dye color reverts the one before i tried to change, in this instance Teal Blue.
this was also discussed here.

but the problem still occurs for me.
First, I’d like to apologize if there was already a topic made on this bug but I did try to search and nothing came up.
The bug I’d like to report is in the dye change menu in the Hero screen. It may very well just be a bug specific to me or maybe many others but the problem is when I try to use the color gold.
Gold dye (Masterwork) worked on every other piece of armor and all the separate parts of those pieces EXCEPT my top shoulder armor color.
In the first screenshot I included, I show the example of how I wanted the armor to look with the dye applied. After I close the window to see how it looks on my character model, the color goes from gold to Dye Remover, which is a grayish color.
It really says Dye Remover when I hover my cursor over the color example
Again, it only affects my top shoulder piece and nothing else. Other dyes work on it, just not gold.
More info:
+Shoulder armor is the Dreadnought Spaulders (Tier 3 cultural armor for Charrs)
+Username: Vanguard Styx

I am now suffering from this problem using black dye on my entire armor set , wtf ?
1. open dye window and dye pieces/trim black
2. close window expecting armor to change colour , changes to a off brown
3. open dye window again every square i made black is now dye remover
4. be angry and confused
explanation plz anet ?
(edited by Booler.6598)
Always when I try to dye only THIS ONE PART of my armor ONLY on BLACK, i can’t.
In window, it changes color on black and all my set is black, but when i close the window, the color backs to “dye remover”
When i change a color on other (whatever white, fog, red etc.) it works and it stays in this color.
I cant dye this part on black for a month. I was trying to dye on my girlfriend computer but it didnt work : <
same thing on my savant helm on my asura, it says dye remover on the big square and I can’t change the color, even though the preview shows up.
I have a similar problem. I bought the tier 1 sylvari heavy armor (Arborist), and transmuted it onto my crafted Vigorous Gladiator set. After playing with the colors a bit I wanted to revert to the original colors (silt and sky), but couldn’t.
When I try to color a part of a piece with the original color either by dye removal or using the actual dye the preview works fine, but after accepting it the color changes to a brown.
Any other color works fine but the original. (e.g. I can reverse the colors and change the silt to sky and vice versa.)
Picture one: some random color.
Picture two: removing the dye.
Picture three: the result (changes to brown).
I have this issue on tier 3 human heavy armor. I try and dye the cloth parts sky dye but when I close dye pallet it reverts to dye remover. I’ve reported twice as a bug for a couple of months now. Nothing done to resolve. I don’t think Anet will resolve anytime soon……
Also having the same issues as posted above
I have the same thing with my set of Briar Leggings. I had a set, merged them with my new, better armor, and moved my Major Rune of Mercy over.
After living with this bug a few weeks, and hitting 400 in tailoring, I made myself a pair of Knight’s Exalted Leggings, and bought another pair of Briar Leggings. Merged them, and was able to color them just fine.
Then I broke down my old Briar Leggings of Carrior of Mercy (I think that’s what they were) and moved the Major Rune to my new Leggings. BAM! Instead of the lower left being selectable, I get “Dye Remover”.
I’ve reported this twice as well.
My favorite dye for the NORN T3 STAG armor set’s horns (helm) and spikes (shoulders) is the rare “sky dye”. But this is not possible somehow.
When I close the window the horns color is changed to “dye remover?” and the spikes color is changed to “gunmetal”.
I think this happened after transmuting the skins to exotic stats armor.
I remember I used the Orr exotic karma armor for the stats for helm and shoulders slots.
Please look in to this.
In the mean-time, is there a way to fix this client side? (transmute to specific exotic armor, etc?)
Many thanks in advance.
I’m having a similar problem applying Sky dye to my transmuted t1 Sylvari armor – originally exotic Knight’s armor to which I applied the t1 Arborist appearance. Interestingly, my Arborist armor came with Sky as one of the default colors, but the color disappeared once I transmuted the piece. I then bought a Sky dye on the trading post, but Sky only shows correctly in the dye mode pane and is removed once I close the pane.
Ecco, I have the same problem applying Sky to t1 Arborist armor transmuted onto exotic Knight’s armor.
I have the same problem, I cannot use “Sky dye” to my Norn heavy T3 (stag set) armor’s helm horns, shoulder spikes, chest cloak and legs cloak.
At least for the shoulders spikes I noticed they were already pre-dyed with “Sky” eventhough I had not bought the dye.
After transmuting (using AC exotic shoulders) it was changed to “Gunmetal dye”, a dye I didn’t have either.
I have bought them both now, but just can’t apply “Sky” to the armor slots mentioned above.
Yes, I have a exactly the same.
Norn stag armor shoulders came with “sky dye” for the spikes(even though i did not have that dye yet).
I then bought the dye so it wouldn’t mess up, because that’s exactly the dye I wanted.
After transmuting using AC exotic shoulders though, it was changed to “Gunmetal dye”.
Same problem with helm horns, but this was changed to “dye remover”, used Or karma vendor helm to transmute.
