This is an actual exploit, I expect to see people banned considering a friend of mine got banned for breathing wrong and this is game breaking and griefing behavior.
Do I think I should be banned for testing it between friends to see if the people spamming it in map chat were correct? Yes. It was an exploit and I stuck my nose in stuff I shouldn’t deal with.

Maybe it correlates with the amount of times you post it? I tried it on myself alone, too.

I wonder if this is the reason I got kicked out of the game while working on a champ and haven’t been able to log back in since. After the launcher, I keep getting “game client lost its connection to the server etc”, but there’s nothing wrong with my Internet connection?

What if they didn’t know what it did, using it once unknowing that it crashes people shouldn’t get permabans. Now if they use it more than once, at most twice, they know dang well what they’re doing and should be banned.

Figuring out who is doing it deliberately, for starters, would be as simple as looking at chat history. It would be clear as day who is doing it deliberately, and to be honest, they should be liberal with the application of permaban in those cases, and then let the users deal with customer service on a case by case basis to determine if anyone had a legitimate reason for doing so. (Note: again, that’s for people using it in local and map. There are people who legitimately tested it)

your intentions may have been noble, but understand that Anet views public posting of exploits as far more damaging than doing them.

Its true, but think of all the chats, on all the servers, on all the maps. Along with people who posted it in /map without knowing what it was (my guildmate was one of them), honestly it would be very difficult to deliver fair bans and could not be very clear. Does the guy who posted it 3 times without saying anything else know that hes crashing it? Think of the way people can spy on servers and destroy siege and troll guilds, but can’t be punished because they don’t know if they know
WvW and sPvP are the only places it obviously wouldn’t be an excuse, and this would just be taking a simple look at the scores and map changes as they posted it.

Yeah, I saw it in a forum, and I copied and pasted it so that I could click on it and preview, and it crashed me. then the thread erupted everyone saying they got crashed. I bug reported it.
There is more wrong with the program now than before this patch – totally not funny and not “fair” to any player who is being dropped and dropped losing more and more “loot” and achievements.

Ok, I know one of the last things people might expect from me is for me to defend Anet, but there’s a first time for everything. Anet employees may want to tell you not to use something, but there are also limitations on their interaction with people in game that they may be bound by. Additionally, if they were to make a statement that turned out to be wrong, there are all sorts of ugly issues that arise. So I wouldn’t hold it against that particular individual for not telling you. It’s entirely possible that they didn’t have the authority to make a judgement on the situation.

I hope they punish hard for this, I remember back in GW1 people got banned for exploiting a bug in the ascension quest to reach max level. This is like 100x worse

A friend got permabanned and had to appeal to get their account back basically for doing nothing. Anet never explained why they were banned aside from “you used an exploit” which was never named or explained. Said friend doesn’t use exploits, grief, or do anything but play the game.
So, they might as well have been permabanned for breathing wrong, with no warning.
If Anet isn’t permabanning these trolls for spamming the crash code and giving little slaps on the wrist, something is SERIOUSLY wrong with the system. Two week bans for people who tried it out means I expect to see permabans for anyone who used it repeatedly.

Its possible they were trolling about the loot chests they got, but they did link them, multiple players.
Im not going to name anyone or any guilds, but they were guildies of mine.
Wait.. yes, you earn your perma ban for “testing” it, even if you do it once. Why? Because there is no logical reason why someone would want to test an exploit like this.
If someone tells you “Hey, I found a code to crash your client” why would you want to use it? If you want to end your client, press alt-f4
If someone tells you “If you put this in chat you crash the server”.. no way anyone would want to test this
If someone tells you anything beneficial this code would do, search the internet before you do. If it it’s coming from a friend, get rid of that friend, because you don’t need idiots as friends.
If you really had to test it, I hope you mailed that to Anet at once if not, you earn a ban.
