I agree this needs a fix, or at least a reply from devs again (something about keeping a fire going)

BUT!!!

If you have been chucking all those potions everyday since launch and assume we got both the damage increase on foes but on ourselves as well… Then what are we complaining about? It means you honed your skills with placebo drugs. It made you a better player. It means you do not need the slaying potions anymore and swap it for flat statincrease substitutes.

Then again… if we all do that slaying potions are going to need a total rework or nobody will use them anymore…

Change the tool tip from -10% damage to player to +10% damage to player → Working as intended. Easy fix.

Change the tool tip from -10% damage to player to +10% damage to player -> Working as intended. Easy fix.

It doesn’t look like they’re even gonna bother to do that.

This is an amusing bug to hear about… I still use them, though it would be nice if this could be fixed.

It sure felt like the powerful potions of outlaw slaying i shared with my team in CM the other day were working… the one person who declined a potion ended up going down a lot and everyone else was singing the potion’s praises.

While I was doing Ascalonian Catacombs P1 today I decided to take the ‘garlic bread’ that dropped from a monster. After we finished most of the dungeon there was only the bit left where you have to cross a few chambers with gravelings to reach the boss (Howling King).

Here comes the weird part. While having this ‘garlic bread’ buff the gravelings were able to kill me in three to four hits. I died three times before I decided to override the garlic bread with another food buff. Of course then I was able to reach the boss immediately. For your information, I think I only died there once back when I did the dungeon for the first time a couple months ago.

Well we shouldn’t complain about getting few updates to this bug considering there are many issues where there is no information at all from dev side.
But as a sidenote i think it is hilarious that the only one answering is Josh and his job isn’t remotely close to this topic. Don’t get me wrong, big thanks to Josh for this, but it realy shows how horrible the communication from the PVE devs is and has been since lauch.

It takes you over a month and still no fix, well, actually it’s been way more then a month but I wasn’t expecting you to test your own game before releasing it.
Everybody with a bit of background can acutally fix that.

Has anyone tested this recently, pre-haps they have silently fixed it?

Would using a “weak or minor” potion be better to give us additional outgoing damage and ensure we take no more incoming damage?

The following potions would help:
Ice Brood
Weak Potion of Ice Brood : 3% damage vs ice brood, +10 Experience from kills
Minor Potion of Ice Brood : 5% damage vs ice brood, +10 Experience from kills

The following potions would make us take more damage (if bugged):
Potion of Ice Brood Slaying: 7% damage vs ice brood, -4% damage from ice brood
Strong Potion of Ice Brood Slaying: 8% damage vs ice brood, -6% damage from ice brood
Potent Potion of Ice Brood Slaying: 9% damage vs ice brood, -8% damage from ice brood
Powerful Potion of Ice Brood Slaying: 10% damage vs ice brood, -10% damage from ice brood

It would look like I’m better off with Minor potions (+5%) outgoing dmg without taking any additional incoming damage than using the powerful potions?

Can anyone confirm the above statement?

How is it not easy to fix? The fact that the bug persists with every single Slaying potion implies that it’s in their overarching potion code, and not something limited to one or two potions. Every one of the Slaying potions have been tested by the community, and every one of them is bugged.

This means that one of two things went wrong when the potions were designed:

  • Some dude had the assignment to make potions do -10% damage, made a small mistake and made it +10% by accident. No harm done, people make mistakes, we’re not mad that this person made a mistake, we’re mad that it’s being neglected.
  • Some dude had the assignment to make the tooltip for the potions say +10% damage and made it -10% damage instead. This one I highly doubt, because it would make potions kind of dumb other than leveling artificer. But still, all they need to do in this case is change the tooltip.

The biggest problem with the fix is probably finding out where the specific line of code is. Once found, it should be nothing more than changing a ‘+’ to a ‘-’.

Again, we’re not mad that this is bugged. We’re mad that this simple bug has been neglected for a longer time than is remotely acceptable.

First, the only “information” on this one is an “I’ll let you know if I hear anything on this” from 2 months ago.

Second, Josh is now PvP Community Coordinator, but at the time of that post (again, 2 months ago), he was working in Quality Assurance. I strongly suspect that his “I’ll follow up on this and let you know” was interrupted by the switch to his new role, and since nobody else seemed to notice (or maybe they just thought he was on it), it will likely never see further attention.

And finally,

So which potions best so I don’t take additional dmg?

Any of the “minor” potions. They make you deal 5% more damage against that type, but there’s no “received” damage modifier, so you’re good. That’s the best option if you wish to avoid taking extra damage.

You’re assuming they care to fix it. I think it’s pretty clear they don’t and aren’t even going to bother.

Edit: And the bug is almost certainly fixable by switching a sign on one line of code.

I think you are grossly overestimating the amount of work it should take to fix this bug.
As for being low on the priority list, this bug report is one of the most viewed (if not the most viewed) in the bugs forums.

As of this moment, it has taken over 2 months to fix a bug that almost certainly can be found and fixed in less than a minute. That’s pretty bad.

I don’t remember the exact numbers, but it probably depends on your stats (toughness, vitality, etc.). Honestly, I’d rather just get the flat +5% until I have the time to do the math and determine what effect 4% of my vitality and 6% of my toughness have on power, precision, etc. and how those relate to actual damage dealt.

Wasn’t there an Ele skill that used to set the caster on fire? Phoenix, maybe?

I do remember that Burning Speed did that in the original Guild Wars…

I still think that they’ve handled the situation poorly, though.

Burning Speed setting you on fire in GW1 wasn’t a bug. It was an intended consequence. I remember there was a really tricky Underworld build that would make you almost invulnerable if you could keep a complicated sequence going and not make any mistakes.(1 slip and you were toast, though.)

The bug is that the tooltip (tooltip says you take less damage) does not match the actual behaviour of these items (you take more damage). Changing either the tooltip or the behaviour will fix the bug.

People keep posting that changing behaviour is hard so let’s get the tooltips changed instead, which can’t possibly be difficult.

Change the definition quietly or prefaced w/ working as intended is the way to go. Fixing it to the common expectation, by default, is admitting sloppy mistakes which is a guaranteed failed grade in my inspiring future politician class of -101.
