Yes, it’s part of the new story content. not to say any spoilers, you will see them is the last segment of the latest 3rd epsiode.
The flames are slow moving homing missles basically, though I’ve figured out you can dogde roll into them to ‘evade’ the heavy damge attack they have. The tricky bit is the timing of you dogde.

That’s nice to know, but again, are they supposed to in the open world? I haven’t heard or seen any mention of them outside of the instance.
Plenty of other confused people at the Shatterer I was at.

Some of the new Story content is Open World. I’m not sure how far and wide Spectral Flames ‘mobs’ roam. Or if they were present in the Iron Marches parts, really.

I would be surprised if they do roam, because they are only encountered during the instance. However it may be possible that due to what happens in that instance, spectral flames now randomly roam around Ascalon – I heavily doubt that though as those things hit like Trucks if you don’t watch out.
Ok. I guess they just missed me. Or something. =)
Oh, re-reading the Rytlock encounter, I guess I remember them. I was mostly concentrating on the Menders, so I guess I took little notice.
Likely, an oversight….or a (future) change-up to the Shatterer? Make him/her a bit more difficult? Somehow got in early? No idea.

Spectral Flames have nothing to do with the Shatterer. They belong to the Ghosts of Ascalon (hence the “spectral” part). Shatterer is a completely separate entity.
Apparently they are supposed to make the ghost a bigger pain in the neck with their invulnerable clingy explosivness.
And yet, there they are. Guess they wandered too far afield.

the only time I know of that they spawn is during the instanced story segment in barradins tomb
but I’ve encountered them accross multiple characters randomly through out Iron Marches
they don’t roam anywhere they literally spawn right next to you randomly and tbh I believe this is actually some sort of bug
I’ve been watching other players in the same area as me running around without any trouble then a couple of players seemingly being harassed by these things
I got downed 3 times just trying to use a merchant because of these stupid things
this has to be some sort of bug or something or perhaps a developer at ANet decided to play a practical joke on us..
either way this is very annoying so hopefully it will be gone soon
although I must admit I bet it makes the Shatterer encounter hilarious since everyone still stacks on the rock lol AOE knockback galore
Having finally played through the new Living Story instance, I can say that the spectral flames I’m encountering in the open world are very different, and probably intentional.
The ones in the instance are bigger, very slow moving, and persist for a while.
The ones I encountered in Blazeridge that day spawned and moved extraordinarily quickly, sometimes in groups of 3. Did very little damage as shown in the screenshot, but an annoying launch.
I can only assume that they’re intended… Just curious that I’ve only ever encountered them once.

Just ran into these coming out of Fields of Ruins in Blazeridge, and were chased by them until just about reaching the Steeleye Span – Blightwater basin was a no-go area.
Perhaps, Rytlock did more than just vanish into the Mists. He may have set more in motion than we could have guessed. Dhum – dhum – DHUM!

I really hate these spectral flames. I swear, they corner you, and then 8 appear, and you die. It has to be a buy, absolutely has to be a bug. It’s driving me absolutely crazy, I can’t complete blazeridge steppes on my guardian because of this.
Necroing this post as this is still an ongoing problem. The orbs will single out a player and relentlessly attack him. They are invulnerable, will teleport to the player’s location if he tries to move away and appear not to have a leash. The only way to lose them is to leave the map, which is not a good option if the player is trying to do the Shatterer and getting the achieves.
