Sylvari Heavy Armour Non-Removable Base Colour (BUG?)
Parts of sylvari cultural (and apparently TA) armour are based on your skin colour.
Edit My below post will not help the OP as this is as per the above poster, a racial effect for Sylvari. My post applies to a closely related bug though **
Some armors have 1 less colour area to dye. Those which have the lower number of colors can till retain a colour not able to be changed. i.e Gloves with 1 colour, pants with 2, Boots with 1 etc.
I had some heavy gloves which had 1 colour, which were a very dark grey/blue. Yet the palms of the gloves were red. Turns out i had used red previously on a set of gloves which had 2 areas to colour.
Workaround: Find an armor piece with more areas to colour than your current, change to preferred colours, swap back the preffered piece.

If that’s true then it doesn’t explain the issue not cropping up for a fellow Sylvari friend of mine. But if it really is the case then I’d very much like it removed, it severely limits my dye colour options.
This issue (bug?) also applies to the male sylvari’s default town clothing. Especially noticeable in the shirt, as about half of it is based on skin colour and quite hard to distinguish from the character’s actual skin.
I don’t know the about female sylvari, as I never created one.
Okay so it seems to be an issue with the Male Sylvari and Sylvari heavy armour. I’ve also found last night that I cannot dye my TA armour black, when I close the hero panel after setting the colour it revert to “Dye Remover”, this does not happen on other armour pieces.
Clearly there are bugs with my armour and it’s becoming very frustrating, especially with no word from Anet on this issue.
Bump
So one month later and no response to this or my support ticket and most definitely still no fix.
This is the type of thing that will keep me from spending real money in the game since my issues seem to be of no consequence anyway.
As a side I’ve found a way to consistently crash the game too. Just dye the TA armour piece black, close the character window so the game resets the armour to dye remover, then drag the armour piece to inventory. Hey presto, you crashed Guild Wars 2!
Please could someone from Arenanet please confirm that they are at the very least aware of the issue and will at some point look into it.
Sylvari clothing, by lore, are an extension of their own skin. It makes sense that there will be parts of the armor that will be the same color as your skin shading towards the color dye you have chosen…to me it appears that it’s working as intended…as far as the crashes…I would split that out from the body of this and create or check for the bug elsewhere, as you are making 2 bug reports…good luck.
Yeah, this is not a bug, and is intentional. Since Sylvari grow their own armor it only makes sense. I think it actually looks really cool when you use it to your advantage! More examples can be seen in this thread:
