Yeah, I’m pretty sure they bought it for parts.

Anyway, remember that if Anet is actually negotiating with someone to help them with the port they are likely gagged. I’m not say that silence = zomg native client but just that there are lots of reasons for silence on this.

Hopefully, they’ll some day publicly acknowledge the mac client having issues but, I’d be happy just to have pre HoT levels of crashing at this point.

Ahh but that’s how they get you. They reduce the number of crashes a little bit and suddenly everyone goes ‘omg thanks I can play now’ and forgets that there are still massive underlying problems that haven’t been solved.

You’re right. Anyway, the probability of a native client is less than playing now 10 minutes without crashing.

My husband and I were doing the verdant brink area together a little and started having synchronised crashing every 20-25 minutes while doing stuff. It was very romantic.

How is the fix coming? Are you guys considering some sort of in-game compensation for mac client users given that you knowingly released a completely broken product to us? Could go a little way toward getting back of some of the goodwill from the mac community that you’ve squandered over the last three years.

Being able to play the game on auto detect settings with stable fps is all i ask for. Seriously i wouldn’t even mind not getting anything but that and an apology

Even if ANet would really make a 64-bit client against the crashes, there would
still be the problem that Cider is only 32-bit. So you would also have to ask
NVidia for a 64-bit Cider now ..

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Unless during this process they also managed to make an OpenGL or Metal port while they were redoing the game engine. Yes, I know the chance of this really small to really really astronomically small (I’d be seriously impressed if they managed to get something that supported Metal out so fast). We can dream of a day where Anet will actually treat us like customers and not like bags of money. Whatever.

And regarding the reply to me about “that is how they get you.”… No, I wouldn’t be fawning over Anet for that. I’m just talking about what would at least get the Mac client back up to playable. I tried doing dailies yesterday and I crashed 15 times over 30 minutes.

Oh, people have actually been able to load up the mac client in the first place? It’s been about a year since I was last able to actually even see the launcher.

Reinstalling and clean downloads have changed nothing, time and again e-mails have directed me to the same rando troubleshooting pages that have nothing to do with my actual problem because no one knows why it even exists and no one knows how to fix it. Seriously got a suggestion that said “now try accessing the trading post again” just because they threw everything else they knew at me.

Do you guys think it would work if we all sent in complaints to Anet, or would they just treat us like spam? (Like they have basically been doing for the last three years.)

‘Cuz, see, this is the last drop in the cauldron (feel free to use another metaphor), and the fact that Mac users were able to stomach this crappy excuse for a ’beta client’ for three years is a freaking miracle.

About the new client:

“Is there a 64-bit Mac client?

Unfortunately, a 64-bit Mac client is not available at this time. We are hoping to be able to provide one in the future, but have no timeline to provide it".

Oh, don’t worry, we can wait another 3 years.

I know right?! I find it utterly offensive what they are doing. They do treat us like garbage, ignore our pleas for help, and work only towards the windows community…

Can someone please explain to me the actual meaning of a “mac client”… because i apparently don’t know anything about clients, or english, because to me this is not a mac client.
It’s the same crappy excuse it has been since its release and i am so tired of being ignored!

First they work on an expansion, without even fixing the “mac client” or even test the expansion on the so said “client”.
Now they work on a 64-bit client for windows and once again (F word) the mac customers!

We also paid for this game! stop using our investments on windows only tweaks!

Oh sure, let us all wait with no deadlines and no news, nor patches. it’s ok.
What’s 3 years to some1 who already waited 3 years?

Yup, looks like the Mac client is going to get obsolesced into nothing. Great.

Normally, I’d take the “we hope” line to actually mean something if a developer said that about a mac client. Like, we might see something in 6-8 months or so. After 3 years of “beta” though Anet’s “hope” means “give us gem story money, k, bye”.

The fact that they’re moving to 64 bit and they made comments about how few use XP make me extremely worried for the future of the mac client since we’re basically running GW2 on XP with the cider client. The question of the mac client feels like it is creeping towards when and not if they remove mac support.

The 32 bit limitation on the OS X client is one imposed by Cider. There’s not a lot they can magically whip up for us. Also keep in mind that just because they’re testing a 64 bit client on windows doesn’t mean they’re ever going to nuke the 32 bit client. In fact they wouldn’t do that because there are still plenty of people out there with 32 bit only computers. OS X doesn’t have that problem because since Lion it has been a 64 bit OS.

The fact that they’re trying to improve the Windows client isn’t a bad sign for mac, nor is it a good sign. It’s completely neutral so I wouldn’t start throwing it around as some portent of doom.

Being unable to launch the game is just the beginning. If you are one of the few people that are able to launch the game, you will be stuck with a terrible perfomance gameplay even if you tune everything to the worst settings possible, limit your frame rate, reduce resolution, window mode. What ever you try you will be stuck with 15 fps and stuttering frames.

EITHER WAY IT’S UNPLAYABLE! All of the fps stuttering and what not happens on any map, HoT maps, old maps…

Some one should make a honest blog review of truth of Mac beta client to and hope future customer see it on Google.

I agree. Things can’t get any worse at this point.
1- client doesn’t open
2- if it does, it won’t let you enjoy the game with its terrible fps stutter even though you are running the worst settings.
3- client after 3 years has the same problems since its birth
4- no mac support

I seriously can not see how the situation can get any worse for us mac users

I’ve been doing a little bit of research.

When NVIDIA acquired Cider they used the technology for their Gameworks studio. It seems that the purpose of that studio, and of NVIDIA’s acquisition of Cider, is to help with porting games to NVIDIA’s Shield Android TV console. What that seems to suggest is that Cider is no longer being licensed out to other companies to use in the porting of games to OS X (If it still is then its incredibly stealth as there is nowhere that would suggest NVIDIA is doing this). By extension you would assume that the people working on Cider (now NVIDIA) are no longer offering support to existing companies who had licensed out the Cider technology (aka Arenanet). Meaning that any issues with the OSX client are issues that Arenanet is having to deal with themselves.

I don’t say this lightly, but it’s also pure speculation, given that Arenanet probably don’t have the ability to tamper with Cider well enough to actually make the game run well given they no longer have transgaming’s support, it’s quite possible that they are actually exploring other means of bringing the game to OS X (native or otherwise). If they were in fact doing so, they would be unlikely to share that information until such a means of playing the game was actually prepared… It might also account for their lack of commenting or assistance with mac related problems. However, that could also be totally wrong as they’ve always been poor with assisting mac customers.

Either way, I think it’s helpful to have a bit more information/perspective.
Hopefully a more permanent solution pops up soon…

I would like to see some of our questions answered, we are paying customers after all.
If you are dropping support for the mac client, let us know.
If you have plans to fix it somehow, let us know.

As it is now, you have sold us a broken product and give us the silent treatment.

So please, give us some answers so we know what is happening.

Thanks for the info, FF; it’s interesting. Their business problems aren’t really my concern, though. I understand the issues they face, but the acquisition happened some time ago and they have remained silent, sold us an expansion that they knew was broken for Mac and, for the last couple of years, have ignored the fact that the game crashed in large group content, making wvw, world bosses, etc. impossible to enjoy. Now, the state of the game is so bad that it’s just a broken product. And yet, they still sold it to us as is for full price.

I think, based on the last three years of trying to get support, that they just have terrible customer service. I’d love to think they have some sly plan, but they’ve been stringing us along with a sweet whisper every once in a while for a long time, never with any follow through. If they do something, I will be pleasantly surprised, but I am extremely skeptical.

Nevertheless, your research was interesting. Thanks.

I think maybe NVIDA could do both and make money. I do not know much about this but if they can and do not it seem they have lost money could make from also license.

It is more beneficial for NVIDIA to use the technology solely to focus on their own platform (the NVIDIA shield) as supporting other companies and licensing Cider out, as transgaming did, would require extra staff and resources. With transgaming, licensing Cider out was their sole purpose, and even then not that many games use/d Cider to port games to OS X. Aspyr has something like 60% of the mac game market share, so most companies looking to port to OS X use them. I doubt NVIDIA would make very much money at all by licensing Cider out. NVIDIA will make a lot more money by focusing on bringing as many games as possible to their own platform. Dedicating resources and staff to licensing out Cider to a very small number of outside game developers likely isn’t worth it. They’d be more likely to lose money on it I would think.

Yeah, I’ve stated this in the past. I’m just worried that what they have said seems to imply that the mac client isn’t even close to even back burner. They don’t even have a timeline for mac updates and they’re barely keeping up with all the bugs impacting the Windows users. We were barely supported when the Windows client wasn’t having issues, I seriously doubt they’re putting much engineering resources now especially since they’re likely shopping for a new porting solution. For comparison, EVE Online is in a similar situation but their devs said something along the lines of they can’t talk about it right now but expect improvements in the future. That is vastly different from, yeah we don’t have a timeline. Basically, if you don’t have a timeline to share just don’t say that. If you don’t have a timeline period, please tell us why.

Edit: And regarding Cider, one of the big users of Cider in the past was EA. I don’t believe EA is using Cider anymore so it may just not make sense for Nvidia to keep the Cider WINE fork going since it is so dated.

Thank you for explanation. Then it seem like with this NVIDA thing Anet either need to talk to Aspyr about port or say Mac client is in bad situation and maybe never fixed or make native client which seem will never happen because of cost.

Mostly Anet need to get what people there that work with Mac client if those people still there and make a community address on this forum about honest situation with Mac. So many question and so much ignore. Time for Anet to be honest with Mac customer.

In fact they wouldn’t do that because there are still plenty of people out there with 32 bit only computers. OS X doesn’t have that problem because since Lion it has been a 64 bit OS.

There may still be plenty of 32-bit computers in use, but I doubt many are still in use that are 32-bit only. To the best of my knowledge, every PC-oriented Intel CPU after the original Core Duo has been 64-bit, and they started the transition with the P4. Now, there are probably still lots of people running 32-bit versions of Windows, but that’s because MS has made the transition about as unnecessarily difficult as possible.

OS X has supported 64-bit apps (at least if you had a 64-bit CPU) since Tiger (10.4), in 2004. Lion (10.7) was the first version to require a 64-bit CPU. 10.8 was the first version that didn’t have a 32-bit kernel, and therefore required a 64-bit motherboard as well. If you do things correctly, you can run 64-bit code on a 64-bit CPU, even if your kernel and motherboard are only 32-bit.

But to get to what I think your point was, yeah, since GW2 requires 10.7 anyway, a native Mac client could 64-bit only without dropping support for users who are still stuck on older OSs.

Another thread (this time not made by me) completely obliterated by trolls and utter idiots, I just don’t get the hate for Mac ppl? wtf?

Why is it so hard to understand we don’t really care if the client is 32/64/128/whatever bits, we just want a WORKING client that doesn’t crash (ever since HoT) and is able to operate on decent graphic settings while completing a SINGLE event in the new areas.

NOTE: I have literally a freaking beast of a MacPro, 64GB RAM, 6GB VRAM, the latest and the greatest, I was getting 70 FPS (!!!) pre-HoT, why should HoT make the game unplayable for me? and no I don’t accept the client is in “BETA” (for 3 years) as an answer…

It’s depressing how people treat mac players. Somehow it’s our fault for buying a game that 3 years back announced mac support. But anyways the one in fault isn’t the company that mislead the customer, but the customer itself, for owning a different os.

I would never have bought gw2 if they didn’t announce this piece of dump “client”.

Their answer is always bootcamp or buy a new pc. What about a more honest company that sold a broken product to their customers?

I couldn’t agree more, especially about those “bootcamp” replies? why should I give away half my HD space (which I don’t really have) to install another OS solely for playing GW2? why do I need to pay an additional windows license fee that costs more than GW2 itself to play GW2?

If by mac support they mean this bulldump, they should edit their advertisement for the client

This lack of communication, and any care in the world for mac players is pretty insulting.

That’s because maybe you didn’t know, but, this is probably the 4th or 5th thread that gets this many pages of mac users begging for some help and they just ignore, all the other threads get burried under the windows one.

I’m so tired of this crap honestly, i’m about to go on my 4th break of gw2 because it’s so stressful to play this game. Everytime I play it i can’t enjoy myself and it reminds me that i put money into this game, all because of false advertisement….

Tell me about it. I literally can’t do Dragon’s Stand or the Verdant Brink meta without crashing, and thus losing the map.

There goes a pretty big portion of this “challenging group content”

Reddit probably a bad place to look for GW2 Mac support. Get many people that want to say Mac suck bad computer for game. If want game play PC blah blah bah trash. I did find a post in that reddit thread I screen cap if that thread get close and remove to.

Thanks! :-)

TBH I could care less about support from the GW2 reddit community, the only support I’m actually trying to get attention from are the people who publish game I purchased, wouldn’t that be a good start?

Oh, people have actually been able to load up the mac client in the first place? It’s been about a year since I was last able to actually even see the launcher.

Reinstalling and clean downloads have changed nothing, time and again e-mails have directed me to the same rando troubleshooting pages that have nothing to do with my actual problem because no one knows why it even exists and no one knows how to fix it. Seriously got a suggestion that said “now try accessing the trading post again” just because they threw everything else they knew at me.

Is it that weird invisible launcher bug? Sometimes on a patch, when you open the game, the launcher won’t open. I don’t know if this will help you, but when I click the GW2 icon on my dock after I’ve launched the game, (and it’s come up invisible), just hitting return seems to magically make it pop up again.

Caught me why I edit post. I agree Mac customer need attention from company they sell game to. I do not even use junk Mac beta anymore on my iMac. I use bootcamp because I give up on this Mac beta trash. I do some time use Mac client on my 2013 Macbook Pro that HoT sale page says work just to do daily login in and it crash some time if I try to do more but mostly when use it can not use TP or gem store. Just spin circle.

Genuine advice:
If you use a Mac with OS X – don’t use the official Anet client. It’s a Cider wrapper developed by TransGaming and as we all know, it doesn’t work very well.

What I recommend:
Download PlayOnMac. It’s a lovely front-end for Wine, the wrapper that Cider is based on. Install Guild Wars 2 through it.

Once you’ve done this, go to the settings and switch to the latest staging version of Wine. Add the flag -dx9single.

Then, go to the Wine settings, go to the ‘Staging’ tab and enable CSMT.

This worked wonders for me – I can now play the game in a resizable windowed mode, full screen windowed mode and the low quality sound glitch is gone. I also genuinely get better framerates.

Thank for advice. But Anet should talk to Mac customer and hope to fix trash Mac beta client for 3 year. Not do this PlayOnMac thing you suggest or what people also say use bootcamp. Anet advertise HoT and say work on Mac and do not say maybe need to use other program. See attach image. Mac customer with better require report crash and other problem. My own Macbook that is better than minimum can not play on and many time can not even use TP or gem store for spin circle that do not end. But if I bootcamp problem not there and if bootcamp on my iMac no problem ever. But answer is not for use other program but for Anet to tell Mac customer honest if ever there will be fix and do not lie.

I hate hash tag thing but maybe it time for one #AnetMacTruth

Found this very useful link (from a google research): https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28147936-Guild-Wars-2-Mac-Edition

“Is Guild Wars 2 offered in a Mac® version?
Yes. Guild Wars 2 is offered in both Windows® and Mac versions. The Mac version is currently in beta. A release version will be available after testing and optimization have been completed.”

-Nowhere I see them mention that it’s a wrapper.
-They write it with the sole purpose of the customer buying the product and wait forever for the client to come out of “beta”.
-They don’t mention obrigatory bootcamp
-They don’t offer a windows copy when purchasing the game

What bugs me the most is buying a broken product with the false pretext that it will be a complete product one day. 3 YEARS OMFG!

I really don’t want to be forced to quit this game ONCE AGAIN! Especially after i just bought the freaking expansion. This is a complete lack of respect to the customer
