Change forum/in-game display name?
Hello moderators,
It looks like this thread got moved to account-issues, but it’s a suggestion. I already had an account issues thread for this, where I was told to create a support ticket. After creating a support ticket, I was told that my only option is to close my account and buy a new one (with a different display name).
As such, I wanted to create a suggestion post to see if this was something ArenaNet could change. Since the suggestion forum is closed, I decided to create the topic in General Discussion.
Apologies for the confusion!

A similar thread that was closed after Gaile said to recreate it as a suggestion:

I can’t find you when I Google your name. You’re fine.

Afaik the only times they change the display name is if it is the persons actual name or if it breaks TOS. Since your display name meets neither of these rules they won’t change it. Your only other recourse is to buy a new game with a different display name and let the other one be used for storage or left unplayed.
It seems as though Smooth, Astral, and the moderator are all misunderstanding the OP’s issue.
His or her name has already been changed. This post, although at first seeming a request for an account name change, begins with a brief history of the poster’s effort to get his or her name changed (which appears to have been successful and the user’s new account name is Liberis) which led him or her to SUGGEST that there be an option (one-time or two-time) to allow a user to change his or her account name without going through all of the red tape that such a change currently suggests.
This is, therefore, a suggestions change. Liberis, it might help if you retitled your message with the word “Suggestion:” in front of the title.

Just my two coppers worth,
I don’t believe the OP has ever received a Display Name change. That is the same Display Name he/she posted with long ago.
But, it is a Suggestion, and has been suggested a few times before. I doubt it will come to fruition because Display Names keep people accountable for their actions, somewhat.

I do not foresee that we will set up a system for display name changes for the very reasons suggested above: Having a display name that remains constant (save those that present a security issue or breach the Naming Policy) is a way for players to not “dodge their own reputations” after bad behavior. For instance, we don’t allow “naming and shaming” on the forums for people who scam other players, but there are ways that players let others know what happened. If BadScammer.1234 gets to change to NicePlayer.9876, his or her reputation can essentially be wiped clean, and that’s not good for players watching out for particular issues or specific individuals within the game.
Display Name changes may come along — I cannot answer definitively — but I can state that if they ever are offered, they will be restricted and handled with care.
TL;dr: There’s a reason that there is “red tape” and for the vast majority of requests, and that red tape prevents a nefarious individual from doing a “reputation reset” and reduces the calls on Customer Support so that they can focus on genuine issues.

@Rabbi Rick – I tried changing the thread display name, but I could not figure out how to do so. Also, Inculpatus is correct – my display name has never changed.
I worded my original post pretty poorly, but my goal was to suggest that ArenaNet implement a system for display name changes, even if it has to be extremely restricted (e.g. how Blizzard does it). Players should not be forced to buy a new account and lose all of their progress in order to change their name (especially in situations like mine).
I am also not convinced that implementing display name changes (with restrictions) would impact reputation tracking. Naming and shaming is not allowed anyways, so it’s already extremely difficult to track scammers if you haven’t had a personal experience with them. Besides, if you block a player, I don’t see why the block could not automatically be transferred to their new name.

Any chance of this happening? I hate my account name being tied to my real name. =\

Example: My display name is Bob, and I run around in wvw making being a huge kitten, then take it to the pve, and just act like a total kitten. I now change my display name, and now play for my character name change. I now have a brand new identity on GW2.
Anet stated this as one of the examples on why they won’t allow people to change their display names unless it’s actually their real name. As much as you claim yours is tied to it, unless people know the history, it’s not enough to warrant Anet to allow it to change. In theory, my display name is also tied to my real name, but you don’t know the history, so you really can’t figure out who I am.
