Guild Wars 2

Decided to meet up with friends and knock out some achievements today and when I attempted to log in what happens? Nothing. GW2 crashes out without hitting the character select screen. I’m able to load up the launcher, log in and then get the wonderful error of Exception: c000001d. Having searched the forums for that exception and found nothing I turned to Google to find that the threads which once existed no longer do. I’ve tried deleting the .dat and re-downloading it. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed the game with both replacing the .dat and re-downloading it. I’ve done -verify and -repair and -image all of which show no problems, no issues no hiccups. I’ve updated my graphic card drivers earlier this week and played with no issues at all prior to today.
OS – Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU – AMD FX-6100
Graphics Card – Sapphire Toxic R9 200 series (with up-to-date drivers)
Ram – 32gb DDR3
I’ve loaded other games, Skyrim, SCII, Diablo 3, Firefall and Warframe, to see if the issue was just relegated to GW2. All other games loaded and played fine with no crashes or noticeable errors present.
Having spent several hours on the issue and dutifully sent the error report to ANet each time I figured turn to the community first and see if there is a possible solution not stated.

Do you use overlays?

Razer Comms overlay. Ran GW2 with Razer on and off prior to doing all of the downloading and still had the crash. Razer Comms had an update 1-2 days ago but had no issue with loading up GW2 since that time with the overlay off.

People have also suggested deleting the local.dat file but I’d wait for confirmation from those that are more familiar with this. I have limited knowledge as I haven’t rant into this problem before.

It may be worth posting your crash log though.

I’ll give that a try and see if it resets it. Pretty sure I need to delete the APPDATA/Guild Wars 2/ folder as well. for posterity here’s the crash information directly

Deleted APPDATA/Guild Wars 2/ folder and there was no Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat to delete.

Turned off Razer Comms, which is the overlay controlling program, to remove that possible issue. GW2 would allow me to log in, as before. Click play and have it flash a black screen with the first few notes of character selection screen music and then crash, same crash except as above.

Heh, I just tried that and I got about 2 seconds further into things than before. Ran a -image -repair and -verify in that order, no issues on any still unable to get to character selection screen.

Have you updated DirectX?

DirectX is up to date.

I don’t know then. The best you can probably do is email support with your crash log unless one of them sees this thread before then.

Well I have no idea what caused it to work but here is what I did.

I ran Windows 8 updater saw some updates did not go through as I thought they did. Installed the updates and restarted and now GW2 is working.

All updates were security updates so I would assume either one of the updates is needed or the failed downloading of the update prevented GW2 from loading properly due to computer based reasons.

So for everyone out there – GW2 not working, see if you have any outstanding windows updates that need to get done.
