FPS Issues [Merged]
Anyone look at this? Please?
Error seems to be either ISP or GW2 – as every other game/resource works fine.
I’ve ruled out hardware issues and firewall problems – can anyone suggest anything useful?
It acts as though it’s a graphics issue – but in Guild wars only…
low population maps/staring at the ground raises fps..
I’m desperate – please help me play..
(edited by Slimjim.4917)
You know what you wont get anywhere above 60 fps in gw2, especially not with AMD CPU, but with what you have you should be atleast getting 40 fps with few setting on high while the rest are medium, low or off. i have fx6300 and am getting 50fps on open world, 30 on silverwastes, 20 on verdant brink, 40 on other HoT Maps. lowering some setting actually only increase performance very slightly. things to note before you boot up gw2 is make sure no programs are running other that gw2.
no other programs are running.
The strange part in all this is that nothing (that I’m aware of) has changed to provoke this problem.
My buddy came over and launched Gw2 on his macbook. It worked perfectly, 60+ fps and 70 ping max.
So Perhaps it’s the CPU? I’ve read that mmos can burn them out?
This seems to rule out my IP address, Anets server or my connection in general.
But wouldn’t this be evident in a 48 player bf4 match?
(edited by Slimjim.4917)
I cant even pull 60 fps in PvE with a I7 6700k, 16gb ram, GTX 1070……
this with anti aliasing inactive.
And i monitor my cpu and gpu… they dont even hit 50%… Something is off.
Before the LS3 Patch I had stable 63 FPS and a ping around 40. Immediately with the update Ive had a massive drop in FPS and ping is around 80-250 with occasional massive spike over 1k. Im certain its GW2 because all my other games and Internet have not lost any performance.
I’m having constant FPS drops today since rollback changes.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
MSI Z97 Gaming 3 Motherboard
i7-4790k 3.60 GHz (OC’d)
20GB Corsair RAM
Solaris – this sounds most similar to my issues.
LS3 didn’t directly seem to provoke lag or anything, though I noticed the odd disconnect. But now the game is nigh unplayable.
Same for me frame rate drop loooooong load screens many DC’s ever since Living story update, appears to be getting worse. It has never been this bad for me before coming onto 4 years in the game. Hope they nail down the problem soon as the game is a chore to play at the moment.
And now chronic skill lag to add to the list of woe. Game is playing like an epic 3 way battle in stone mist castle when there is not another player in sight. Npc’s are enjoying wailing on me with abandon as I watch my skill bar flash like a christmas tree.
Just trying to complete dailies before moving onto playing something I can play has turned into an hours long event.
Come back GW2, i miss you….
Ugh, I just patched latest update this morning and game is basically unplayable. Lag is so bad I can barely move. The patch is the only thing that has changed on my computer since the last time I logged in, which was about 4 weeks ago.
I just logged on this morning and my FPS went from 40 to 10, nothing else is running – now gw2 is literally unplayable.
I’m having FPS issues as well since the rollback patch. Going from 130 to 0 every once in a a while. Doesn’t even seem to matter if I’m in a WvW zerg or alone, still does it randomly. Pretty frequent though, maybe around 15 seconds, but not completely regular.
Super frustrating. I’ve played this game for years with no issues. I have pretty bad simulator sickness and the complete stop and go stutter makes it unplayable for me due to nausea.
DISABLE HYPERTHREADING!!!!!
I was having this same exact issue: FPS drop and ping spike.
Go into your Bios, and disable Hyperthreading, it’s a CPU option.
The Hyperthreading enable/disable option is different for all motherboards. I have an MSI Z97 motherboard, and it was under Overlocking.
GW2 uses DirectX 9, and DX9 does not work with hyperthreading.
Programs must be programmed to work with Intel’s Hyperthreading for it to work effectively. Direct X 9 is old and was made before Hyperthreading was mainstream. So GW2 which runs on DX9 so does not. I guarantee disabling Hyperthreading will fix your problem.

Now somebody please explain to me why im have 15 fps when on older FX 6300 and just one 970 card im have 80 ….
ok easy on the caps.. won’t help the situation.
You need to give more information about your rig and the specs. You want help, we can try.
A FX cpu cannot be considered anymore as a high end PC. Even with that 8 core at 4.2GHz, the bottlenecking for a 970 SLI is real. Seriously, what the heck where you thinking when you swap the 6300 for a 8350…
About the source of the issues, Nvidia and SLI configurations have had a lot of issues with Gw2. Try disabling SLI and force the main gpu to work at x16 pcie speed. If you have a chipset outside 990FX each gpu is working at pcie 2.0 x8, which is a bottleneck for this game.
Also, delete Gw2 forlders in Local and Roaming from AppData in C:/User/Yourname.

+2 cores + 1.2 Ghz on rest ?? Ehm not everybody throw thousands for I7 …. If you think about it almost no gamer will ever USE FULL I7 potential so waste of money.
On 1 GPU im geting +5 FPS still unplayable…
Why the hell im can play ANY GAME MAXED ON 4K and this crap wont run even on LOW!!!
After deleting folder im got nother +5 fps so now im at 30 – 40 … thats bareli playable…
Seriousli im have 144 FPS at crysis 3 …. and here even whit out any people aroun im so low … LOL
Turing SUPERSAMPLE on some how fixed the isue .. now im geting 80 FPS…
But seriousli WTF? HOW ?
Use GPU-Z to check to see if your GPUs are running the bus at x8 when the game is running. Sometimes the video cards don’t “wake up” from their low power x1 states.

A modern i5 dumps on an 8350. A modern i3 is better for GW2. And an i7 doesn’t cost “thousands” lmao
Not to mention that you could have overclocked that 6300 over 4.2GHz easily…
You’re going to be getting low framerates in loads of situatuons anyways with that setup, so it’s hard to say. Also make sure your GPUs are actually clocking up abd not running at PCIE 1x

OK so after last few patches my FPS just gets worst…
I have Nvidia GTX980M, i7, 16gb ram, ssd etc yes its a laptop but it runs other higher end graphical games at 60 fps+
guild wars when there is a few people in wvw im dropping to like 10fps…. i even tried setting ALL graphics to low and I get like 25-30 fps which should not be happening.
I’ve tried a few things like clearing all settings, local.dat, repairing/redownloading the game using 32bit/64bit client
oh i have a 200mb fibre connection with decent upload also so that shouldn’t be any problem..
any help? i see others have same issues with graphics cards that should be more than capable of running this on max settings?
High End Gaming pc with FX8350. No I dont think so.
Gw2 engine is just a piece of crap. So that’s why your machine cant run it like it runs the other graphically intensive games because the game is not utilizing gpu power that much. Even high end desktop cpus with insan overclocks are having difficult times to keep at 30fps in zergs.
For the degrading performance over the patches I’d recommend reinstalling the game from scratch. It help me recover a bit performance that recent patches chipped away.

Just overclock the 6300?? A merely i3 skylake already beats a FX 8350 while gaming, and in gw2 is destroys it.
Since you say Supersample fixes it, it is surely a thing with drivers or SLI. Blame Nvidia for the awful support in this game, not the game itself.
i7 5775c @ 4.1GHz – 12GB RAM @ 2400MHz – RX 480 @ 1390/2140MHz
don’t look at the overall cpu usage (that is exactly this: “(sum of all cores usage) / (number of cores)”; look at each core usage. you will probably notice that one core is always above 85% (probably jumping in the 85-98% area).
the main problem with dx9 is that in the end you have to use 1 single thread to send the data (you can split the stuff that you need to calculate in other threads but you have to use 1 single thread to send it, there is no magic to fix it simple as that). Gw2 is using a dx9 engine (gw2 engine is cpu heavy).
AMD FX cpus (same as all the cpus that AMD has atm available, maybe next year Zen will change the things (until I actually see some benchmarks I won’t believe AMD slideshows, AMD “burned” me too many times :p)) have a relative low single thread performance ( here is a link to give you an idea about single thread performance between cpus: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html ; you can check this forum with cpu-z benchmark results https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/share-your-cpuz-benchmarks.216765/ ).
So your first problem is the AMD cpu.
Nvidia has some particular drivers that are not great at all, you might want to try a couple of driver versions. Not always the latest is the best, try some older ones. So your second problem is probably the Nvidia driver you are using.
You don’t need an i7 to be honest an i5 should be more than enough for gw2.
If you look at streamers on twitch you will notice that most of them use Intel cpus. And they use Intel cpus because for gaming Intel is the king atm, maybe dx12 will change something.
I disagree with this particular line: “If you have a chipset outside 990FX each gpu is working at pcie 2.0 x8, which is a bottleneck for this game.”
Some articles regarding pcie:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5458/the-radeon-hd-7970-reprise-pcie-bandwidth-overclocking-and-msaa
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Ivy_Bridge_PCI-Express_Scaling/23.html
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Impact-of-PCI-E-Speed-on-Gaming-Performance-518/
In Gw2 case you will hit a cpu bottleneck before you will hit a bottleneck caused by pcie 2.0 x8 .
(edited by thedukesd.3829)
Gw2 doesn’t work like most other games, pcie speed affect significally the performance, even going x16 in 3.0 gives you higher framerates.
I did tests with different pcie speeds 3.0 with my r9 285:
- x16 had 110fps underwater, 70’s in empty map, 50’s in more heavy graphic situation and 23-24 in heavy cpu situation.
-x8 had 100 fps underwater, 60’s in empty map, 46 in more heavy graphic situation and 22-23 fps in heavy cpu situation.
- x4 had 77fps underwater, 45’s in empty map, 36 in more graphic situation and 20-21 in heavy cpu situation.
i7 5775c @ 4.1GHz – 12GB RAM @ 2400MHz – RX 480 @ 1390/2140MHz
Since I got a very similar Hardware Setup (see Signature) and no FPS issues, one can only guess what’s wrong with your machine. Some things I can think of:
Might be redundant but make sure you don’t play in battery mode but have your laptop plugged in to a power source.
Does your machine use the nVidia Optimus technology? If so, force the laptop to use your 980m for GW2 in the Geforce driver settings manually.
Talking about drivers- there has been a lot of trouble with mobile Geforce cards and new nVidia drivers in the past few months. Especially if you have Win 10 and all that fancy auto-update stuff, chances are you “accidently” got a new Geforce driver installed that doesn’t like the combination of GW2 and a m-series GPU. Try an older driver, I use 365.10 at the moment since everything I play on my laptop works well with it.

The FX 8350 might have low performance per core, but its not bottlenecking the 970 sli! http://www.tweaktown.com/tweakipedia/58/core-i7-4770k-vs-amd-fx-8350-with-gtx-980-vs-gtx-780-sli-at-4k/index.html
GW2 engine is rather unoptimized, everyone knows that. I’m sure you do as well. The best thing to do is to get a intel cpu or at the very least wait for amd’s zen cpu.
Windows 10
I have a switch so you restart in GPU mode rather than on board so I don’t have optimus i think as it can only use one at a time.
its not in battery mode ever whilst playing and all the stuff is set to gaming performance and battery stuff all disabled etc
i’ll perhaps try and old driver i recently updated nvidia but not through windows update i am using win10 however, perhaps running it in win7 compatibility might help?
i do have a lower CPU thank you however and probably a slower SSD but still with the cpu and any i7 16gb i shouldnt have any fps lag really….
Greetings my dear fellow Tyrians,
As the title is already quite revealing I will get straight to the point,
My FPS in GuildWars2 are at the low side, and at this moment i have tried everything within my computer-knowledge and I have explored the depths of Google to no avail.
So first things first, Here are some specifications of my computer.
OS: Windows 10 home. 64x
Processor : AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core Processor, 3500 MHz, 4 core’s, 8 logical proccesors.
[b]Motherboard : MSI – 760GA-P43 (MS-7699)
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2GB
Ram memory: 8GB Ram
If more info is needed, I can provide it later.
-I have updated all my drivers.
-There are no weird programs running in the background. (I did a clean instal on my computer prior to making this thread.)
- Windows is set to ‘’Best performance’’.
-My system is not overheating.
I dont know what else I can do to get some higher FPS, right now I have inbetween 30-37 FPS just running around in Fields of Ruins, it is still jaggy now and then..It dropped to 9-11 while fighting the bloodstone creature.
Anybody here who can help me fix this issue?
(edited by Nirim.6789)
your processor is probably the problem. while 4 cores and 8 processors sounds good on paper, AMD CPUs are abysmal at single thread performance. what does this mean for a game like gw2? well, gw2 relies heavily on your processor’s performance rather than your graphics card, which means an AMD CPU can make the game crawl like an infant, because unfortunately the game can’t/doesn’t use all cores simultaneously, which is what the AMD CPU needs to actually perform well.
now you could try turning the settings in the game down, it might help some.
how to fix for realsies? get an Intel CPU
| 61 Asura | 5 Charr | 2 Norn | 1 Human | 1 Sylvari |
because unfortunately the game can’t/doesn’t use all cores simultaneously, which is what the AMD CPU needs to actually perform well.
Is there no way around this? :o
I wouldn’t say there is no solution, because you should be getting more than 9-11fps.
The problem is you have an AMD cpu and a Nvidia gpu, both being famous for having tons and tons of issues with a specific solution for each case. Finding the true source of issues could be very tedious.
Since there might be interminable amount of possible solutions and the game has been out for many years, I suggest to search through the pages of this section for similar threads and try those fixes.
Most famous are clean install of gpu driver with DDU, try different drivers, check gpu is working at pcie x16, check power configurations, repair the client, try 32bit client, delete gw2 folders in AppData, disable reflections, shadows and character model limit to lowest…
i7 5775c @ 4.1GHz – 12GB RAM @ 2400MHz – RX 480 @ 1390/2140MHz
I have the same problem, my problem i think is related to my Internet , for more than a few people will say that the Internet has no relation to the fps, I can record a video if you need see
My game falls from 40 ~ 30 fps for 4 ~ 5 and the ping rises 160 – 180 to 350 – 800, I started having this problem after the roll back
my spec
cpu fx 6300
gpu R9 270x 2gb oc
Ram 8gb 1600mhz
and before anyone says that this is my problem procesador be amd , this a video as I normally play 12~20 fps in zergs

Hello,
I just noted that there were four separate threads on this topic, so I merged them. This may make the conversation somewhat disjointed, but it’s great to keep things together so that the team can track this issue.

AMD processors are NOT the ‘problem’ go FUD something else!
I cannot tell you what your ‘problem’ may be, just tell you I run AMD and have NO ‘problems’ in game.
Spec is as:-
Win 10 64bit with all fhonehome crap turned off using “Spybot-Anti-Beacon” and as many MS ‘apps’ as possible!!
AMD FX 8350 CPU
AMD Radeon R9 380 4GB GPU (16.8.2 drivers)
GW2 64bit client on an SSD (this may be the important bit to some)
16MB memory on an MSI 970A Krait Ed Motherboard
Keyboard & mouse are wired as is the Tinternet connection.
60-100 FPS occasionally dropping to 50+ in big OTT animation fights.
Ok, since todays patch my FPS is a disaster.
It used to be 40+, now its 15 or less.
Now i cant decently play GW2 anymore.
I dont have a good machine, but on lowest settings i could till now smoothly play GW2.
Win 7 64bit
Intel Core i3-2370M 2.40GHz
4 GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7500M/7600M series
EDIT: hmm, till now i was still happily using the 32bit client.
Had the idea to now switch to the 64bit client.
Wich seems to have solved my issue :-)
I have again an avg FPS of 40+
(edited by dagrdagaz.4913)
you could try the following in explorer “%appdata%”
look for your GW2 directory and rename the local.dat
you may need to change your launchers language after that
this file gets bigger and bigger over time and is known for slowing down the client

Just built a brand new system:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6850K @ 3.8GHz
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming 8GB
RAM: CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 32GB (4 × 8GB) DDR4 2133 @ 10-12-12-31
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-Ultra Gaming
HDD: Samsung 950 PRO Series 512GB M.2 Internal SSD
OS: Windows 10 Pro
My previous system was about 5 years old, so I was expecting a massive performance boost, but I can only pull 50-60 FPS in Lion’s Arch when I look/run around. Any suggestions?

I am having this same issue ever since the big update last week, and it definitely started before the rollback as I lagged out of Black Citadel and fell beneath it outside the portal and cussed the lag all the way to the bottom. lol
I have ping drops to zero .. lagging, flashing skills .. crash after crash .. lag so badly I don’t know where my avvie is at times. Some places are much worse than others for some reason. Black Citadel, The Grove, Silverwastes are the 3 worst and can give me a LOT of crashes trying to get removed from the areas and back to someplace like DR, which seems to be fine there for me.
I can be lagged to a stop showing a ping of zero, and still see other avvies zipping by me as normal and chat moving along just fine. Sometimes I can move almost normally, but even get close to a temple boss and lock up and start crashing.
I tried to get the jumping puzzle daily, after lagging my way in, which didn’t start until I had jumped to the bottom, it took me 3 crashing attempts to get WP’d outta there once I finally made it.
I have cleared my appdata temp, started a fresh local.dat, called my internet provider, rebooted my router ( even bypassed it ) and internet, ran repair, swapped between 32 and 64 bit client .. it is ONLY GW2 that I am having these issues with and it started with the big update.
My other games are fine, I am streaming movies and TV shows with no issues, websites are loading in a flash .. I hope you sort it soon as it is incredibly frustrating and I MISS being able to play this game and run the temple bosses.
any help ? please!!!!!!!!!!!! , i cant play for two weeks
Helllo, before big update my game worked +60 fps and ~60 ping to low setting, but after update game working to 5 fps and 120 ping and when i am doing a world boss sometimes i got crashes, just like them.

VendorId = 0×10de
DeviceId = 0×0ca5
Version = 9.18.0013.4196
Description = NVIDIA GeForce GT 220
Compat = 0×00100800
VidMem = 512 MB
My Spec:
GPU: Gefirce GT220
CPU: Dual-Core E6700 @ 3,29GHz
RaM 3GB
OS: Win 10 Pro
Just built a brand new system:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6850K @ 3.8GHz
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming 8GB
RAM: CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 32GB (4 × 8GB) DDR4 2133 @ 10-12-12-31
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-Ultra Gaming
HDD: Samsung 950 PRO Series 512GB M.2 Internal SSD
OS: Windows 10 ProMy previous system was about 5 years old, so I was expecting a massive performance boost, but I can only pull 50-60 FPS in Lion’s Arch when I look/run around. Any suggestions?
I basically have the exact same issue.
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600k OC @ 4.4GHz
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming X 6GB
RAM : CorsairVengance CL14 16GB (8×2) DDR 2400
Motherboard : Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
With graphic maxed out on 1080p i usually hit 100+fps, which drop down in pupulated zones around 80, and see massive drops to 40-50 with spikes down to 30 in places like lion’s arch or the initial zone in the heart of the mists.
Moreover the gpu usually only see a 60-70% load, while the cpu has every core used at around 60-90.
Even lowering resolution, or graphic quality doesn’t change the fps drops in these zones, while the gpu has even less load dropping around 30-40% at lowest settings.
I highly doubt an oc’d i5 6600k may do any kind of bottleneck, same goes for the 1060.
The question is, what’s the problem here ?
(edited by xBlack.4897)
Hey,
Thanks finally we might get some answers!
Moderators can you please post some guidance here like what information we can provide you to help diagnose the issue?
Like give us a list of things
CPU
GPU
RAM
MB
etc
or is there any diagnostic tool you would like us to use and upload/post here the export information?
This way you can probably work out if there is any common issues with OS, GPU, CPU etc or certain drivers.
Alternatively if it’s a problem with the game we are all doomed probably…
seems alot of people have this issue, even on low settings on a i7 980m gtx SSD 16gb quality ram (laptop, but still it should get 60 fps+ with medium setting without breaking a sweat surely?)
After a long time with fps problems falling for no reason and randomly , For those with cpu with more than 4 cores I have tested this for 5 days and appears to be working https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3x8kop/psa_guild_wars_2_fps_drops_fix/
Only I returned to have FPS problems when the temperature of my CPU reached 60c
pc specs
cpu – fx 6300 3.5ghz
gpu – R9 270x 2gb
ram – 8gb 1600mhz
If you’re having FPS issues at 60 degrees and up, that sounds like thermal throttling on your CPU’s part.
As for the processor affinity thing, it seems murky from the Reddit threads, but worth a shot I suppose. I’ll try it tonight and report back.
AMD Phenom II x6 1075T Processor (3.0 Ghz)
8 GB ram
Win 7 64-bit
XFX Radeon HD 6870 (PCI-e 2.1, 1GB)
I do not know what is going on, but been hovering around 5-10 FPS for days now, making the game unplayable. The driver is the latest for it, but unfortunately, AMD considers it a legacy card now and no longer making new drivers for it. I have gone on to the using the suggest crimson beta drivers for the card, but the results have been the same.
experiencing this too for the whole day been playing for like 4yrs now and i just upgraded may pc 2 months ago been playing it smoothly until now when i logged in 60-80 fps then drops down to 10-5 fps lol
