Frequent crashing from "corrupted files"
I already gave one explanation why this game is more affected by single bit errors. But sure, can’t be you or your computer, because it’s build/configured/used by a genius … but as far as I can tell, there are more people who found their hardware error, than those who refuse to look harder …
Had to reinstall 15gb today – was working quite fine most of the day and then the error came. Now I cannot even get to character select as it keeps putting me to desktop

Belryn, dont you find it the slightest worrying that the first 4 pages of the tech forum is filled with users reporting more or less the same error? As far as I can tell, the percentage of those asking for help, who has solved their issue, is far less than the ones who are struggling and those new ones signing in saying theyre struggling. I actually tried to use the info you gave earlier, but it didnt help me. I am fairly certain most users reporting issues making the game unplayable, HAVE tried several of the various home cooked fixes being suggested by self acclaimed geniuses, to no help. Believe me, the frustration by this issue, making people like me, unable to play for several days, every day spending hours trying to find the error, is NOT calmed by fingerpointers. I CAN take waiting, waiting, and waiting. But, I can NOT take being ridiculed as well.
^Also for some people (like me) Guild Wars 2 worked perfectly fine for some time. One day game just started crashing and nothing can fix it. So it means Guild Wars damaged something in my PC, or this game is so sensitive for any changes in system? But then why everything else works fine? How should I know, i know nothing about how it works, i did everything i could to fix it (tests, format, updates etc…) but no resuslts…

This is a ridiculous statement that falls back to insults to try to make a sturdier point because the poster knows his facts is flimsy. And, I don’t know what thread you’re looking at, but there’s been less than 5 actual hardware faults in this thread of … how many posts? And all of them said other games worked fine before regardless.
What you’re calling problems being experienced by the majority – I am assuming you’re referring to the XMP and RAM settings – those aren’t hardware faults. They’re settings. If you were familiar enough with computers to speak out on this issue, you’d know that, so I advise others to disregard your comments.
Regarding modified settings, overclocking, custom profiles, etc – Any game should be able to handle them. Indeed, everyone with those problems either stated they had games that ran fine with the custom profiles. Or they said nothing of it. But they didn’t say “all my games are crashing.” 2+2=4
The players have found a temporary fix that seems to work most of time, and that fix is to get around a problem ArenaNet created. It is not our problem to fix and we shouldn’t have to.
On a related note, it’s hard to be exact when calculating the success of the XMP/RAM fix, considering a lot of the posts in this thread are not the same “Corrupt File” issue we’re talking about. That may explain why removing custom hardware profiles isn’t working for everyone.
Joining the crowd. Same issue. Tried many of the same fixes posted. Driver. Bios. Uninstall. Nothing seems to matter. Been screwing with this for days now. No issue with any other game or benchmark utility.
Going to run Memtest and see what it says I guess.
Ran Memtest for an hour. Two passes. Zero errors.
I was having crashes due to corrupt files and memory address errors every 20 or 30 minutes. Constantly having to repair the archive and in some cases do a reboot.
On Friday night (Aus time) I got home, installed the latest NVIDIA public release driver (I did have the latest beta – I’ve heard on forums they are the same drivers but I’m not sure if thats completely true) and there was a GW2 client update when I logged in.
Happy to say I haven’t had any crashes all weekend – played a good 13 hours or so.
The only other thing I can think of that might be different is that I also hit the 70 zones at around the same time. I have a feeling that all my crashes were occuring when loading into maps via waypoints – in particular ealry zones like Queensdale. I went to Queensdale once or twice though this weekend without crashing. the rest of my time was spent moving around the 70+ zones near Orr.

I had a friend who was having this issue as of earlier today. I had him take out his memory sticks one by one and low and behold, the game started working.
Even if memtest passes check your ram 1 stick at a time by physically removing it from your motherboard. It worked for him, maybe it will work for you.

The reason it worked is because the Overclock on the RAM needs to be in pairs. if you remove a stick, it will default to the normal values.

As we are to hair-splitting now: It is a hardware error caused by wrong hardware timings, set by some software.

Well, unless the overclocking settings lead to hardware errors. And I would bet a lot of money on it, that in the most cases the users who have this corrupted files error in GW2, having random crashes in other software, too.
As I said before, most single bit errors would go by unnoticed, when they are in a non critical area. The only thing GW2 is doing different, it seems to check the files/data before it uses them.
Edit: Somehow the forum system is screwing with my attempts to post what I want, sorry for the lot of changes.

I’m having the exact same problem. I also cannot do the fixes people are posting, I just don’t know enough about computers to even atempt it and I’m sure there are more people in the same boat. Anet get it together and fix this please. From reading all this it seems to be the problem with how the game communicates with RAM, putting it in simple terms

@ Panik.9482 Hi ! could you please make a sort of “guide” detailed with the parameters to change in the BIOS ? I ask it ‘cause I still have problems to understand what I should change and what i shouldn’t: I’m sure that many users would be grateful to you if you could explain (using your ram as exemple) how did you
GTX 580 here, and I too have started having the same problem when i reached orr.
Straights of Devestation and Timberline Falls – Consitantly crashed me with ‘corrupted file’ issues.
Everywhere else? fine. I can log on with any of my other characters in other areas just fine.

etc. etc. Files are so many I cant even count them!
Corrupt-facefbb0, Corrupt-98b899c7, Corrupt-fa33fa7e Corrupt-5ff95f2b
etc.
I have re verified multiple times, nothing works.
I also tried to run it off a portable HD backup that was done yesterday. No dice, that crashes ONLY on my straights of Orr character.
Before people suggest hardware issues: The case fan snapped so I had to take the entire desktop to be looked at by a trusted engineer friend, who works in computer repairs for a living.
He (for free) checked my entire desktop out and I got a pass (except for the case fan obviously)
So, I am pretty sure there is no hardware issues here on my end as that was yesterday, and my guild wars issues started 2-3 days ago…in timberline falls, and straights of Orr. NOWHERE else.

Actually getting the crash at the initial startup now. I can’t even make it to the character select screen.
Played the game for at least a week before any of this started.
Well it seems that I only keep crashing now.
Now my toons are constantly crashing in Brigantine waypoint, Gendarran Fields.

ive crashed like 15 times, reinstalled gw2, took out my ram and put it back in, downloaded every driver known to man to update everything, and i get nothing. always crashes on me on any character where ever i am. the game is unplayable and it has started yesterday. i know its not any of my hardware i tested it all. its something in the game that makes the hardware crash. this needs to be fixed asap. more people have this problem than any other right now.
Kitsunami.6241, can you please use pcwizard and give me the information on your RAM please?
I fixed this error, one of my stick of ram was damaged. I run memtest for each ram and I found that one was not working well with 5354 errors in 5 seconds.

I’ve started encountering this error as well. eVGA 560 ti. Doesn’t seem to be zone or character specific. I get a hard crash every 15 minutes or so.
Haven’t had any trouble since launch until the last day or so. Very frustrating. It isn’t hardware.
Haven’t noticed any ATI users yet in this thread. fwiw

I am getting the same problem. My 560 ti EVGA video card keeps doing the same thing. I also got 16 gb of ram. Yeah this bug is very annoying.
exact same here. 560 ti, 16 GB corsair vengeance ram.. this is the only game having issues.
hardware tested, everything is good. i’m a programmer as well and in my non-genius opinion, it looks, quacks and smells like a software issue.

I am no programmer or genius but I feels that it is a Anet software issues.
I have played so many MMO and Steam games with no crashing except for GW2.
I am getting really annoyed with this game constant crashing is getting on my nerve.

Ok I’ve just noticed that many of us has something in common:
Do everyone here (who’s getting crash problem) has a corsair vengeance ?
Yea, I am using corsair ram
Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-64
No I have GeIL RAM DDR3
I had 16Gb of corsair vengeance, swapped them yesterday for G. skill.RipjawZ 4×4Gb. The game ran like a dream the whole day tho it has done that before and started to crash like crazy again. The thing i noticed that my old ram was from different kits and that alone can cause compatability issues.
I had this problem for several days and I don’t know if this will help but all I did was take my RAM out and put them back in in different slots and I have been running fine for almost a week now. It’s worth trying I guess.
I have 8Gb RAM – 2×4Gb RAM (tested – no errors at least memtest says no errors…) I removed 1 RAM so i only have 4Gb but game stopped crashed, for now at least. I guess i can’t trust any of this hardware tests programs.
have same issue. im using 560ti and samsung 830 ssd
ill try to install game on my HDD, will post if anything change

I would guess that its ram with a XMP profile, or SLI ram, correct?

Wrong I played BWE 1,2 and 3 and NEVER crashed at all. I didn’t change my timings and didn’t change any hardware and now I crash when i enter a area my toon has never been in before. I crash using waypoints and the audio from the personal story is messed up. Spare us the BS with the behind the desk generic talk our game is jacked up and we need a fix.
running
I5 2500k @3.3Ghz
Radeon 6950
M4 Crucial SSD
8GB of Ram (Matching Pairs)
I’ve read the majority of this thread and same as you all I’m having crashing issues. Seems more frequent in certain areas such as the mystic fountain in LA and it was really really bad inside the area called “Bloodtide Coast” on the island “Grand Barrier Isle”. Same error and I have a GeForce 580. Funny thing is I was getting blue screens on my Windows 7 64bit box and I knew I had an issue. It ended up being a bad stick of memory and I replaced it. No more blue screens but to my surprise it didn’t fix the crashing in GW2.
I’m still crashing as frequently as I did with the bad memory. I can run several other games with no issues so that leads me to believe that this is a GW2 problem. Please fix this issue as I really enjoy this game but I’m finding it difficult to play with these crashes. Thank you.

Potential Fix
I was experiencing crashing to the point where I couldn’t even run -repair due to corrupted files. I found out that one of my sticks of RAM was failing using Memtest and promptly removed it.
I then read this post and surprisingly the fix worked 100%. No repairing, no reinstall. Here’s all it took:
Right click the GW2.exe > Properies > Compatibility > Select to run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
@PaniK I read about this XMP and SLI i thought it might be a problem but i didn’t find anything to disable or change it.
So heres my RAM: Patriot DDR3 (8GB (2×4GB kit) 1333MHz) CL9 Retail (PSD38G1333KH)
So, this is your RAM then? http://patriotmemory.com/product/specs/PSD38G1333K.pdf
You need to make sue its set to CAS 9 settings, at 1.5v. You can use PCwizard to check the timings and volts
I was having this issue too, I spoke to some of my friends on vent because I was getting extremely frustrated from crashing every time I tried to do an event or try to go through Lions Arch at all. Long story short one of my friends suggested using C Cleaner because he had issues with Windows errors crashing other games, and I have not had the problem since. I hope this helps.

Ok, I will give a try and see if i can use all of my RAM
I got a response from support and he said “I have reviewed the data you provided and I am afraid I was unable to locate anything which would explain your crashing issue. However, what I would like to do now is see if actually running the game is changing any of your settings. Due to power saving options, running these diagnostic tools outside of the game (meaning it’s not running) will often affect the results because the computer isn’t under load.” Basically they don’t know what’s wrong. I’m going to try to see if it’s a problem with my ram or mobo
I crash alot too, mainly when i am teleporting and sometimes just randomly when i am running around or watching a cutscene but I get this message:

I ran memtest+ and had no errors or problems with the memory after 8 passes (Using corsair vengeance 1600MHz 1.50V 8GB(2×4GB)). I also attempted to turn off XMP profile in my BIOs, but only have the options for ‘auto’ or ‘xmp profile 1’. I don’t have a disable choice (using ASRock p67 extreme4 Gen3 mobo). So after being unable to turn off the XMP profile as suggested, I removed one of my memory sticks, as I gathered from some posts here that that resolved the issue for some people. However, less than a minute into playing I received the same crashing problem.
Anyone have any additional ideas? or perhaps know how to disable XMP profiles with the BIOS that I am dealing with? Any help would be appreciated.
Still getting this problem even now
well guys i have had the same problem as you guys up until a few days ago. i’m running a phenom x2 565 be that i unlocked to a phenom x4 b65 @ 3.4ghz undervolted from 1.500v to 1.375v. i was crashing originally with just black screen and restart and eventually i ended up getting bsod’s a week later instead. after trying and failing with everything i eventually set my voltage on my cpu back up to stock, set my gpu (560se) to factory stock settings (not factory oc, just basic 560 @810mhz) and stock voltage, turn off my overclocking programs “turbo” (overdrive has a little green button, intel has turbo boost), and set my cpu usage to 100% in my power settings and run gw2 as administrator and i haven’t had a crash in 3-4 days. give it a try, or don’t i don’t care cause i’m too busy playing gw2 with no crashes now.
I am crashing less now from every 10 – 45 min.
Now 2 – 3 hrs then crashed.
Lets try this another way, since MANY of us are having the SAME problem due to no fault of our own, try patching it.
Also I don’t think asking the end user to uninstall their entire pc and windows is a very constructive line of thought.
