I’ve been trying to get Guild Wars 2 to open for about an hour and a half now, to no avail. I’ve updated drivers and restarted already.

Having the same issue as you, I was able to play just great until I switched to windowed mode and then it just crashed and every time after startup I get this error message and it goes down. Where you able to play earlier?

Yeah. It was working perfectly fine last night, only started happening as of about an hour and a half ago, when I got home from work.

Game has been working fine up until last night for me too, but this morning after I updated it continually crashes about 30 sec into startup. For some reason after the second try it got to character selection, but when I tried to log onto a character it said something was wrong with my internet connection (which is fine). Every other time it just fails at start up. Nooooooo…

Been having the same problem all day. GW2 worked completely fine yesterday, apart from a connection issue that was caused by my router. Today, crash on startup.

Hi Ryshken – I would recommend first updating to Service Pack 1 for Windows. You can do this by clicking the “Start” button, “All Programs” and then selecting “Windows Update.” From there I would make sure you select every critical update for your system. Secondly, I would try a clean installation of the latest Nvidia drivers:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-301.42-whql-driver.html

It is for use at your own discretion, but I might also advise trying out the latest Nvidia Beta drivers as well:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-306.02-beta-driver.html

Please let me know if these updates have any affect on the issue.

Hey Ashley, thanks for the response! So I got the Nvidia Beta, and did some updates and still not working.

This all started happening after it tried to download the complete game again, from the looks of it (210,000+ files) and I let it get through 600 MB’s before cancelling it, due to not exactly having THAT much bandwidth to be able to warrant a complete redownload.

Gone through about everything I can short of a complete uninstall and reinstall, which I’d really like to avoid, due to not having the bandwidth available to do so.

Any suggestions?

Yes, delete all files on the GW2 folder except gw2.exe and gw2.dat. Then go to your Documents\Guild Wars 2 folder and delete all files inside.
This will reset all your GW2 settings to default, but it solved my launcher crash issues.

Didn’t work, unfortunately! However, I’ve noticed that the folder that Guild Wars is contained in consistently sets itself back to Read-Only, if that makes a difference, even after I’ve unchecked and applied it, if I reopen it, it once more is set to Read-Only

You can also try this: get the gw2setup.exe client download from your account, rename it to gw2.exe and drop it inside the gw2 folder, overwriting the gw2.exe there. Run it and it will download the latest files again. Maybe you have a corrupted file.

Appreciate the help, Virtual. So I did as you said, and it’s downloading again. Says 191,000 files to go. Is it going to download all of them again, or stop when its updated?

Thanks!

It checks the state of your gw2.dat file and only downloads the remaining files needed for the game to run. My gw2.dat is currently using about 14.1GB. You can also edit the gw2 shortcut and append -repair at the end, and the next time you run it, it will check all files inside gw2.dat to see if they are ok. Afterwards, remove the -repair.

You can also try this: get the gw2setup.exe client download from your account, rename it to gw2.exe and drop it inside the gw2 folder, overwriting the gw2.exe there. Run it and it will download the latest files again. Maybe you have a corrupted file.

THIS!! This solved my problem with Guld Wars 2 launcher from immediately crashing and become non-responsive on startup!

It was working fine since a couple of days ago! (Well, actually I’ve had a couple of crashes before =/ )

I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what I did wrong that upset the launcher so much! I’ve switched monitor cables around, but that shouldn’t be the source of the problem.

PC spec: Windows 8 Pro, i5 3570K, Radeon HD 7950 DirectCU II, 8GB RAM.

Here is a list of things that I’ve done in attempt to make it run. Please note that I executed the gw2 client at each point:
1. Restarted Windows
2. Executed gw2.exe as administrator.
3. Executed gw2.exe with command line -repair.
4. Executed gw2.exe with command line -diag, passed all diagnosis.
5. Executed gw2.exe in Windows 7 compatibility mode--don’t try this please. I lost control of my PC and had to shut it down forcefully)
6. Put User Account Control (UAC) settings to never notify. No luck. Reverted it to recommended settings.
7. Cleaned Gw2 folder (except for the gw2.exe and the gw2.dat).
8. Copied both Gw2.exe and Gw2.dat from a friend (made a backup of mine, though). Nope, no luck.
9. Installed the latest graphic card drivers. No luck.
10. Downloaded all available Windows update. Yes, even the optional ones. I swear to Dwayna! But, by Grenth, I still had no luck.
11. Tried re-installing the game from using the DVD, no luck—it wouldn’t even start the installation; crashed at auto-run!
12. Tried re-installing the game using the setup downloaded right from the official website. No luck!!
13. Tried uninstalling the game (from Windows control panel). No luck!!! (this deserves at least three exclamation marks and an emoticon o_O)
14. Because I don’t want to stop at number 13 . Even in a sentence. No, I’m NOT superficial. I’m not…

At this point, I thought to myself, maybe I should pray more to the six. But then again.. they rarely answer. So I started browsing this forum. And Holy Asura, Maythesixwatchoverme, I came across this thread and found your post! Although, I must admit, I smiled in disbelief at first when I read how ridiculously simple the solution you are proposing here. I mean, I mean.. I am a techie! I am an IT professional! I write complicated code for computers to interpret and so they can act on my command! One can’t just simply replace the Gw2 launcher with an installer and expect it to work? They both serve different purposes.

But, with my eyes half-shut, I tried it anyway; renamed the installer I’ve downloaded, copied it, pasted it in the Guild Wars 2 folder replacing the one in it, double clicked on that kitten thing… And whatdyaknow! It WORKED! It alived! Yeah I had to re-enter my log-in details. But whatever you ask, I’ll give it to yah! Hit the PLAY button!
(It didn’t need to download anything, apparently the .dat file was perfectly healthy)

Thank you SO much, VirtualBS.3165! I can’t thank you enough!

Cheers!

Shin

if you cancelled the patch 600MB in, then im afraid you have corrupted the gw2.dat and only a complete redownload (which is likely what -repair will do anyway) will fix it.

Having the same problem… Currently using the “Gw2Setup.exe” renamed to “Gw2.exe” and then trying to -repair first.

My issue started with just one crash here and there, no big deal… Every game out there crashes SOMETIMES. Then it started to do it each time I opened the game. It would crash once, then work. I told myself, “Hm, I must not be closing the game properly. Its adding stuff to the crash dump file and its messing it up,” so I switched to exiting the game through the menu.

Once the game is running for me, it works flawlessly, no problems AT ALL… Nice and smooth, blah blah blah… Turned it off through the menu to go eat dinner to avoid wife aggro… come back, turn the game on, and now it crashes every single time I try to play the game. Has been doing this ever since the second patch when I got the game just before Christmas. Dunno, s’kinda annoying to have a game glitch that extremely and become progressively worse for seemingly no reason.

Currently 152,000 more files to Verify… will update after it finishes. sigh

Didn’t work. Verified all files… Came back with 100%, signed in, hit Play! and crashed. It just took longer to actually crash this time. shrugs Off to The Witcher 2, I don’t have the patience for this…

You could try running as admin. I noticed the UAC thingy popped ut after I did what “VirtualBS” said.

I just realised this is an old thread, but it is the first on Google, so maybe it will help others as it helped me :>

I am having the same problem as Kurohyou.5420, the black screen & crash happens at every startup, I need to replace the Gw2.exe with the renamed setup everytime I want to start the game.

Was there any solution to this? I tried the replace Gw2.exe with the renamed setup .. but that doesnt help me even once to get in .. still crash right after the User agreement now.

No GW2 for almost two weeks now for me Afraid my guild might turf me out.

Went through the whole troubleshooting with ncsoft tech support. Got to the point of new HD, fresh OS install, driver install and updates for MB and Graphics cards. removed one graphics card. removed all but one stick of memory. Exact same issue. Hard to believe both my nvidia 680 GTX are bad and that all 4 sticks of my RAM are bad. I have no problem playing any other graphic entensive games .. Witcher 2/WoW/ Eve Online.

I would be ok if GW2 crashed on me right out of the box .. but to have it start doing this after a couple months of very solid performance at max settings :P

Hiya Slyvar, I think you may be better served by making a thread of your own … including a ‘NCSoft Gameadvisor’ (just google it) as an attachment can help those wanting to help you.

Apparently you already done a ton of stuff, so when/if you make your own thread, ‘we’ (or at least i will) view the Gameadvisor report is the ‘state 0’, i may suggest some things that you already did, so ignore those but do inform me you did them. These are standard things i like to clear out of the way first, obviously … i’ll check your thread later …

We are peace, we are war. We are how we treat each other and nothing more…

Hello people. Just wanted to give you all my 2 cents input on the subject matter of “Guild Wars 2 Crashes at Startup.” I have 2 computers were I can run GW2. The older model is a 2 year old with an i7-2600k cpu, Nvidia Gtx 570 video card and 16 Gb of DDR 1333. This computer has no problems whatsoever running GW2. No crashes at all unless I get dc’d due to a bad connection which sometimes happens with my internet provider. A year after I got this rig, I bought another one as another member of my family started infringing on my playtime with this computer. My second rig had an AMD 4.1 Ghz quad core cpu, Nvidia Gtx 680 video card and 16 Gb of 1866 ram. Awesome computer right? YES IT WAS. It ran everything … counter strike, sword of the stars 2, GW1, SWTOR, etc. It ran GW2 just fine until several months ago when the game started crashing after startup. Sometimes I would be able to get to the character select menu and select my toon. Sometimes it would not and immediately kick me out into the all too familiar GW2 error report screen. Sometimes I would be albe to play for several minutes then it would crash. At first I blamed it on the AMD system. Graphics performance with the above specifications was so-so. And I growing frustrated with my machine. It is supposed to be the better rig of the two. This went on for several months until I finally grew so sick and tired of not being able to play GW2 that I decided to change the motherboard and the cpu. I upgraded to an Intel i7-3770k cpu and an asrock motherboard. Awesome. I noticed better performance with all the games I played. The graphics were smoother and response times were better. And I thought this would solve my GW2 troubles. After doing a clean re-install of windows 7, GW2 and all the necessary drivers for all the computer components blah blah blah … STILL … STILL GW2 CRASHED. I frequented this forum and other forums to see if I can find a solution to this problem. I wanted to play GW2 with this new rig. My other … OLDER computer had no trouble running the dang game. The error message I received looked almost like the error message you guys have been posting. I do not understand the things in the error report but I would scroll down to the end and look at what it said. And everytime it said something like Nvidia driver blah blah blah in the end. I could not post the exact error message here because I no longer have the problem. I have all the latest updated drivers for the video cards and mobos. Everything is updated software wise in my rig. The problem was not with the GPU at all though the error code does incriminate the GPU. It was with my RAM. I have 16 Gb of the g.skill ripjaws. My friend and I decided to test the memory after reading it as an answer given by one of the devs at anet. I forgot his name and I can’t seem to find the thread where I found it. We downloaded MEMTEST86+ (it is a free software —- google is your friend) and installed it in a usb drive and set things up in the bios so that the computers will boot from the usb. We tried it first on the older computer. Memtest did not find any errors with my other system memory. I took around an hour for it to complete 1 whole pass. No errors. We tried it on my new computer. BANG … not 2 seconds into the test the screen screemed of errors in RAM left and right. The bottom part of the test screen was completely colored red which means … hardware errors from the RAM. It took an hour as well to complete the test. Now I knew it was the memory. I unhooked the RAM from the slots and tested them one at a time. It took around 15 minutes for each RAM to be tested completely. Result: 1 of my RAMs had tons of errors in it, the second one was dead as the computer failed to start and began giving off the ‘RAM is dead’ beep. The other 2 RAM modules were fine. So now I just use the undamaged ram. I have 8 Gb of 1866 DRAM instead of 16 Gb. But
GW2 has been running smoothly since. No crashes. No blue screens. No issues. My windows test scores for the system actually went up from 7.7 to 7.8. It seems that defective or even dead ram will still make your computer run as long as it has ‘good’ ram placed in the slots together with them. My other games did not crash with the defective ram probably because they are not as memory intensive as GW2. Playing GW2 12 straight hours as of this writing. No crashes. So … my advice to you all experiencing startup crashes with GW2 is to get MEMTEST86+ and run a diagnostic with your memory. MEMTEST86+ is free and the test should not take you more than an hour to complete. I have now solved my problem. It was not the GTX 680 as I previously thought … but the RAM. Hope this was helpful.

Check your Anti-Virus!

Mine (Bit Defender) was blocking the CoherantUI_host.exe file — causing the crash. After putting in the exception, it loaded fine.

I stumbled upon this after trying everything else.
