I’m not sure whether this question has been asked before, but I’ll ask it nonetheless. Is it not possible for the team behind Guild Wars 2 to allow the use of torrent as an option to download the game digitally?

I just bought a key of the game earlier because of its 50% off sale but find myself struggling to download the full client using its own downloader. It’s not getting any downloads at all for some reason. As such, if possible, I am requesting for a torrent link of the full client of the game.

Otherwise, I am open for suggestions on how I’d be able to download the game, or more importantly, install the game in my computer.

Well, the reason I am asking for a torrent link for the game is that torrent works better for me when downloading massive stuff from the internet than using the downloader specifically designed for the game, at least based on the files I downloaded using torrenting tools such as uTorrent.

By the way, this is the best response I could make based on the gibberish response you just made.

Torrents will most likely not happen because of security reason and if you ever find the game one a torrent it’s not autherised to be there and most likely has been altered to steel your account information, so don’t download it from a torrent. As for your issue for not being able to get the game, to download you will need to run the installer in admin mode and turn off all security apps like AVs and firewalls.

Torrent doesn’t sound the most feasible due to the constant updates this game gets. I had a download link up several months ago of my GW2 folder, however, you would have to sit through updates still. You are more than welcome to use it if you want via the previous thread I posted in. It is an 18GB download, so keep that in mind.

Keep in mind, being a copy 4months old you will still have to download updates since then.

They just need to put downloads up on Akamai’s Cloud distribution system. Problem solved.

I appreciate the link for the main game, however, the issue I’m more concerned of is such download getting cut somewhere during the download process and may not be resumable.

My second best option into downloading the game aside from torrenting, as I had on previous MMORPGs, is to download the game by parts, at least for the main client. Then another for the patches. But then again, as was discussed from the link @sobe.4157 referred, there are also issues with such.

By the way, I’m not in the rush for it as the computer I would use for the game still requires fixing. I only uses a general purpose laptop right now.

Feel free to use the link from my site with a download manager if you want to try and to test your speeds there. If you have slower net you can download overnight just to see. I’m not letting that file server’s contract end until February next year so you can take your time if you do want to try it.

I use IDM as my default download manager which works great. However, our internet subscription only have a burstable speed of up to 300+ kbps (download speed) for the first 4 Gb bandwidth usage per day. Past that, the download speed reverts to 100+ kbps, then restores burstable speed the next day. Downloading overnight at normal circumstances won’t necessarily successfully finish downloading the file.

By the way, I tried downloading the full client again using the download manager from GW2 and as ever, it wasn’t be able to retrieve files from GW2’s server.

I made a screenshot of the error I’m getting with the server.

Oh geez 300Kbit, are you in the states? If so who is your provider? Although it sounds like, with that as your net option, that you are not in the states.

I don’t know if you will honestly be able to play with basically dialup / ISDN speeds.

No, I’m afraid I’m far from any of the states in the US to be in it. I’m from Asia, in fact. Although I must admit internet download speed in this part of the world out here is indeed slow, what we’re using actually is decent enough for normal use. What I know is that the internet connection out here is still more expensive despite the poor internet speed than neighboring nations namely, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand which has by far better bandwidth speeds by average. I have seen the statistics that says it so.

The internet connection is actually a broadband one and its bandwidth subscription is at a burstable 1 Mbps ~ 3 Mbps. What I mentioned prior to this post was the download speed specifically. Or did I use a wrong unit of measurement that is kbps (when it should be Kbps)?

Math time!

k (kilo, x1000) is the correct prefix, whereas K isn’t mathematically correct but is sometimes used for aesthetical purposes. Your usage of kbps (kilobytes per second) was correct.

On a related note, 300 kbps (kilobytes per second) equals 2400 kBps (kilo*bits* per second), which equals 2.34375 MBps (megabits per second). This because one byte is comprised of eight bits, thus 300 * 8 = 2400.

If your connection is advertised to be around 1-3 MBps, 300 kbps is actually above average.

Then I guess the unit of measurement I used is correct then. I was just surprised to see the reaction for this kind of internet speed.

It used to be at flat 1 Mbps bandwidth only upgraded to a burstable speed of 1 ~ 3 Mbps.

Just want to clarify. Lower case b is bits, upper case B is bytes. 300kb/s is roughly 30KB/s which is 105MB/h.

I have 3Mb/s DSL. I get 300KB/s or roughly 1GB/h. Digital download of a new game can take me 1/2 a day (or night) to get which is why I back all my games up. Easier to reapply a patch or two than download the whole game from scratch.

Ah, yes. You are correct of course. It’s been too long since I studied networking, I’ve forgotten most of it. :P

Same. I am also getting the same download speed at its optimum. By the way, is there a separate link between the main client and the patches?

To my knowledge the only way to get a patch is with the gw2.exe client. It first patches itself, restarts and then downloads the dat file patch.

The dat patch appears to be numerous smaller files that are combined to for the dat file. So no, there isn’t one big dat file that gets downloaded.

While your point is a good one, the incorrect usage (and advertisement) of Kb vs KB is NOT one that is limited to users….businesses screw it up all the time (intentionally or not). Buyer beware.

By the way, before the thread goes off-topic, are there any suggestions on how I might be able to download the full client or the latest game folder possible for the game?

I don’t think getting a hard copy of the game is the most feasible for me at the present. The reason I only bought a legit key of the game online is because of its 50% off sale.

The best way really is to let the launcher download it all. Is it possible for you to leave it running overnight?

Also, as a side note, the launcher does resume downloading if you close it down at any point. If you download 50%, then shut it down, next time you start it up it’ll download the remaining 50%. Mind you it will say “0%”, but what that means is it has downloaded 0% of the remaining data.

and you maybe can download it on an external hd by a friend with better connection. Later you can simply move the folder where you want it to be. Or copy the complete gamefolder of a friend ….

I was actually thinking on this as well, even pay a small amount for it if needed. However, I do not know anyone who plays the game from here nor anyone from whom I know, seeing there plenty more others good MMORPGs in the market of which some are free.

Using the desktop to which the game will be run on, I am now getting good download speed from the server. This also means I’d be able to play the game in days time after finishing the download.
