So I’ve seen some suggestions on how turning karma directly into gold is something against the intentions of Anet and how it might be considered an exploit which ends up in banning. I’ve seen threads on such examples including buying rare/exotic gear for karma, putting it into Mystic Forge and salvaging the received rare/exotic for ecto. I can agree that this method is somewhat “twisted” and might be seen as shady and some might not like it. But I wanted to ask about a different case – the Lost Orrian Jewelry Boxes. What if I bought tons of them (using, say, 500k of karma) and sold all the received items, that is the stacks of unidentifiable objects and, depending on my luck, some of the most expensive crafting materials, getting as a result a couple of gold? Is this an exploit? Is this “turning karma directly into gold, and hence, forbidden”? On the other hand, it’s a very direct way of using karma, there’s nothing twisted or shady about it. But indeed it’s done in a massive amount and results in getting gold. So is this okay? If not, then where’s the line between okay and not okay?
Sorry for getting into such details, and maybe I’m just paranoid but I want to feel secure before I get my account banned. Thanks.

I used about 400k karma on Orrian Jewelry boxes, trying to get the mini, and sold back the items I received. I am pretty sure we don’t have to destroy what we receive. If you are ever in doubt, contact Customer Support and ask about an action in-game, and whether it is an exploit.

If they didn’t want the jewelry boxes to be a source of gold :

We wouldn’t get the unidentifiable junk objects.

We wouldn’t get non-soul-bound crafting mats.

The jewelry boxes are set at what Anet finds to be an acceptable ratio of Karma-to-Gold, and if that changes, they’ll just change the cost of the jewelry box or adjust drop rates.

Unless you’ve found a way to make them reliably drop a lodestone or some such every time you open them, but that’s another matter.

Agreed. This conversion is premitted, I use it whenever I’m full of karma, the gain is not that much anyway.
