[MAC] Launcher won't open
I’m also unable to open the launcher on my Mac since the update.
Svanir Appreciation Society [SAS]
Also just tested by booting my iMac in OSX and my old one as well. So on 3 different Macs it does not work. It only works when I load it in bootcamp windows.
SOLUTION:
Go to your GW2 application. Right-click and choose “Show Package Contents”
Navigate Contents -> Resources -> transgaming -> c_drive -> GW2
Rename gw2.exe to oldgw2.exe
Rename gw2.tmp to gw2.exe.
Launch GW2.The launcher will start and will begin the download. I’m downloading now.
Edit: The fix persists through multiple launches.

THX! It worked for me

Thanks that worked. I wonder if Anet actually tests their updates on Macs before they release them. It seems doubtful.

Probably not but the current Mac client wasn’t developed by them so even if they did find this bug there’s not really much they could’ve done about it.
I’m aware of that but if they know something is broken if they tested it a post letting people know before they find out by trial and error would be helpful. Luckily we have some good forum members that often figure out how to fix Anet’s broken product.
Yay! Thanks so much for that. Worked a treat.
rename gw2.tmp tp gw2.exe and delete old gw2.exe before it.
the file path is – /Applications/Guild Wars 2.app/Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive
it works for me!!!
Thank you so much! This has saved my sanity!
Argh…well mine’s still dead. I’ll keep trying the suggestions above. Anet pls, give MAC users just a little more love okay. :|
Works now thanks to that solution.

I think they do but forgot this time. Or maybe, they were experimenting with Native Mac Clients and moving files around, but forgot to put things back! (I know, I’m forever the optimist!)
Anyway, don’t thank me, thank Blackwood the original person who figured it out!
That would be a super obscure thing to check no matter what they were messing with. Good thing it’s a super simple fix. This totally worked for me!
Talek.6795:
rename gw2.tmp tp gw2.exe and delete old gw2.exe before it.

(my autocorrect really really wants to change that username to Dalek!)
Talek you are my hero

I don’t think testing if the client opens on Mac is an obscure thing to check at all given that, you know, GW2 has a Mac client. Sorry I’m a bit jaded because I’ve seen Anet treat the Mac client as an afterthought for way too long. I’m glad a customer found a fix though.

Well it’s because Anet didn’t develop the Mac client – they got TransGaming to make it which they did using their Cider product (read: Wine but you pay money to use it).
The problem is, TransGaming since sold off their tech to Nvidia so they no longer maintain the Guild Wars 2 client.
It’s an unfortunate situation to be in but not much Anet can do about it short of just making a new Mac client.
Again I am aware of the origin of the Mac client. I’ve been around the forum (and the old Mac support forum) for a long time. I’m also aware of the years of neglect even before TransGaming was acquired by Nvidia, the many times customers were promised Mac specialists that posted a few times and vanished, and the one time I saw Anet address a Mac issue quickly was when Mac customers could not access the gem store. Of course that was before TransGaming was aquired by Nvidia. But as I said, I’m pretty sure someone at Anet has a Mac to test it on to see if the client at least loads.
I’m not going to argue anymore about the issue so as to not derail the thread. Let’s just say from my experience I’m not surprised the client was broken and Anet didn’t mention it if they knew about it.

This is what worked for me. Everything thing else that I tried failed.
Same here. My launcher will not open on the MAC.
Whoever discovered that renaming a couple files fixed everything I thank you so much.

Mine begins the download and has gone anywhere from about 5% of the bar to 70% then it encounters and error and quits. Has happened about 5 or 6 times already. Anyone have any other suggestions?
EDIT: 10th time was the charm. I just had to be patient through the errors and keep trying eventually it worked and now the client is updating.

A Heads Up About This Work Around For The Problem. Posted on reddit, and not here of course but at least some place got a dev replay about the Mac client.

So this works in the short term, technically, but you won’t be able to patch at all in the future unless you roll this fix back. It looks like we have some idea of what changed and we’re working to get a real fix in for this.
It’s a relief to see there’s many more in the same situation.
Launcher opened fine yesterday, won’t today (tried fresh install)
Temp work fixed for me now. Currently downloading

Hmm.. after today’s second patch I managed to come back into the game without having to roll back the fix, so hopefully this will be true for everyone.
More from reddit about the issue in the AMA thread. I guess I’ll have to copy and paste since I’m not sure if this thread will get a red post. But I’m not going to stay up all night doing it. Hopefully a dev will show up at some point.

I just saw a message about this in my PMs. This is since today’s update? I asked the person who messaged me to post in the Bugs Forums (official forums) because I know our QA Team is keeping a close eye there. Would you guys be willing to look there and add your experience to the thread? The more info we have, the more quickly we can fix it. Thanks, and sorry for the bug.
Again from reddit.

this issue is resolved in the first hotfix (released ~15m ago)
fwiw, I’ve had a broken GW2 for quite some time. It would show up in the dock but no GW2 window would ever appear.
Checking activity monitor shows it just hanging, not doing much.
This is how I fixed my issue:
1. Use Finder to browse to ~/Library/Application Support/
2. Rename “Guild Wars 2” to “Guild Wars 2-backup”
3. Launch Guild Wars 2 and it worksI don’t know if this causes other side affects, but at least now it boots and is downloading heart of thrones. If you have to, you can always restore the backed up “Guild Wars 2” folder.
Thank you for this! after 6 month i can restart play this game!
I am having the same problem. My first step was to uninstall the game, and to do a fresh install. Afterwards, when starting the launcher, nothing happens. I’ve waited hours, and nothing. I’ve tried restarting, running first aid on drives, removing and reinstalling again, launcher still does nothing. I’ve not changed anything on my system. I was is a game, and it crashed, which it did frequently anyway. I tried to restart it, like always, and nothing happened. That’s when I began the first uninstall, and reinstall. Now I have a product that I’ve paid for, that does not work.
Do this:
You can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved log in/password and in-game settings. To access this:
1 Click on the “Finder” icon located in your dock or the desktop of your computer to make “Finder” the active program in the finder menu bar.
2 Hold down the “Option” key on your keyboard while clicking “Go” in the finder menu bar. A drop-down will appear.
3 While still holding down the “Option” key, click on “Library” in the “Go” drop-down.
4 Once in the Library folder click on Application Support > Guild Wars 2
5 Move the entire Guild Wars 2 folder to the trash and then empty the trash. The next time you launch Guild Wars 2 it will recreate the recently deleted folder.
This was what worked for me after trying many of the things in this thread and talking to support.
Most of the time it works for me when I start the game via Terminal.
The command I use is : sudo /Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2.app/Contents/MacOS/ciderWhen I start it without ‘sudo’ , it does not work for me.
I had tried other suggestions and the reinstalling, but nothing. Then I tried what you did and it worked right away. Thank you.
It’s been a while now, but I’d still like to thank all who tried to help me, or were able to help others with this issue. My fix for this was to use bootcamp to install Win 10 64 bit, and to install a Windows 64 bit copy of the game. Since then, no more false starts, or game crashing, period. Dual booting using bootcamp is easy as pie on a mac. I’d reccommend this to others that can’t quite get their game to run without false starting, or who’s games are constantly crashing at the WORST possible moments.
