Name Questions? Please read [merged]
First, for any support issue, please always use the Search Engine, because we often have dozens of dozens of threads asking the same thing, and it’s just more efficient for you to get your answer right away!
Here are FAQs about changing names of various kinds:
I want to change my email address/log-in name:

I want to change my character name

I want to change my display name
- This is not a service that is available, either through a purchase or through Support. Unless there is a specific privacy issues — that is, you used your real name or your email address for you in-game and forum display name — the name is permanent. If you fall into the small number of people who did use your real name or email address, contact Support for assistance. Please do not write Support asking for exceptions, for they will not be made.
More about Display Name Changes
There are very good reasons why we do not offer the changes as a service at this time. It’s important in any game — and especially in an MMO with the high number and visibility of player interactions — to create a “personal history” for an account. I don’t mean your in-game “personal story” but a history of your account as viewed in the game.
If we allow changes of display names, a person who has been harassing another player will be hidden from that victim’s sight. A person who has built up a reputation for cheating, or botting, or doing other breaches of the UA, becomes invisible to those players who were aware of the issue and were awaiting action on the matter. Several other factors of “individual accountability” can be negated by simply hiding behind a new display name.
I take on board things like typos in making a name. But assessing the difference between a change and a correction can be difficult, and at this time, we’re holding firm on the “no changes” policy. There are two reasonable exceptions:
- An offensive name will be changed — once — and it will be changed by a GM using an anagram system, so the user does not get the privilege of choosing the second name.
- A display name will be changed to prevent the disclosure of personal information. For instance, the display name is the player’s real name or even email address. We have improved the account creation process to make it clear how display names function, and we even have expanded the User Agreement to accomplish the same objective. If players know that your display name is actually displayed in the game and on the forums, they’ll be less likely to use a name that poses a security risk. If they know that using an offensive name results in a randomly chosen name, they’ll be less likely — one hopes — to choose an unacceptable name.
Some of the same arguments about display name changes also applied to character names, but as you know, we made that option available when the feature could be properly developed. At some point we may make a feature available that allows a player to change his/her display name, but if we do, I am confident it will take into consideration all the risks of those changes, and address them effectively.
In the meantime, and with all due respect, we will decline to change display names unless they involve one of the two exceptions cited above.

When I was first signing up to GW2 for the Betas, I was unfamiliar with the Display name system, that we would have an account name, and a display name. So I made the mistake of using my full name for my display name.
At first this didn’t bother me too much. But I became more and more uncomfortable with that fact that anyone could add me and know my full name. I know it’s not as bad as using say your email address, but if it is at all possible for me to change this to keep my identity to myself, that would really help me make up for my mistake.
Thanks for your time.

I’m sorry, that was a joke, your request seems reasonable enough.
Thank you sir for proving my point! Now knock it off :P

It would be great if there was a way to change your display name without going through support. They just brought me back to the forums because my display name is spelled wrong.
We do not offer display names changes upon request. They are only offered if there is a potential problem, such as displaying one’s real name on the forums. (We consider that a privacy issue.)
Allowing players to change their display names carries with it potential risks to the community at large, and it is not something that is currently being worked on. This option may be offered in the future, it’s hard to predict. However, at the present time, we are happy that with today’s build a player may purchase a Name Change Contract through the Gem Store and change a character’s name.

Name changed! Thanks ANET!
Hahahahaha lol, EricGORE, you made me almost pmsl xD
But yeah, I have a similar issue as I used my sister’s (real) name for the Display name (this was going to be her (unwanted, so I took it) account and I had noooo clue display names were, well, going to be displayed as they are…. lol). Needless to say, a guy using a girls name leads to some unwanted embarrassment… So here’s to hoping ANet deem my request worthy of a display name change =D

Unfortunately, display name changes are not a service that is offered, except in the cases of where security might be an issue. Sorry about that. I hope you have fun adventuring in Tyria, otherwise. =)
OK then security is an issue, a big issue. My previous email address might have been compromised, so I just created a new email for gw2 exclusively. But still I need a display name change.

If his forum name is the name used for billing, then yes the staff will likely change it. They’ve done that before in such situations.
Well, I AM Bob from accounting…..so… I don’t want my coworkers to know Bob from accounting plays online video games. It can bring me endless harassment and derision.
Look at what happened to that female politician when people found out she played WOW.
Horror, no, never. I like to keep my online gaming in the closet.
lol well I thought perhaps your name was “Bob Frum”. I hadn’t associated “acct” with the rest of the name. Yeah, like Inculpatus said, you probably won’t have much luck. lol

LOL I imagine there are a lot of Bobs from accounting that play GW2. Not to mention if they saw your tag in game doesn’t that mean they are playing too? Either way I hope it works out and you enjoy playing despite what Greg from accounting thinks of you.
Can a mod or dev do it? I really don’t mind here on the forums since I don’t post here, but it really bothers me in game. I never thought that was going to be my in-game account name when I chose it.
If so, can you please send me a PM I have a name in mind but I don’t want anyone else to see it ))))))
Edit: I wanna make clear Im not taking about my characters names. Just my account name “Bob Frum Acct.9817”
Thank you

Support responses are always so form-lettery it makes me wonder how closely they review cases to determine if exceptions should be made to standard practice.
So, could someone take a closer look at my case #130516-001241 please?
Basically, ANet created a new account for me just before headstart due to issues with my GW2 account. Unfortunately they were not able to unlink my old account from my GW account by the time of launch (despite assuring me that they would be able to do so), so I was not able to use the character names I actually wanted.
Thanks in advance.
Gandara
Well without being support I think I can help you.
A few months ago the list of reserved names has been cleared. So you should be able to claim your names now. If the names are not avialable they are claimed by another user and it will be impossible to force that user to give up the names in question.
So I think support can’t do anything for you, but perhaps I’m missing something and Gaile find something more in the ticket.

Hello,
I no longer use the email address that is associated with my account. I do still have access to it, but I am trying to update all of my online accounts to use a new address. For the life of me, I can’t find a link on the website which allows me to do this. The “My Account” link only lets me change my password or download the client. How does one go about updating their email address?

Hello there.
I would like to know if its possible to change my email, i created a new email in my ISP and I’m transfering all accounts i have to there, but i cant find that option in GuildWars. Can someone help me plz?
Thanks and farewell!!!
This is a manual action that has to be done by support.

It is true that at the present time — and for the foreseeable future — we do not have a feature that allows display name changes. This may be something we offer in the future, but it is not currently in development or even, as far as I know, in the planning stages.
Personally, I love AP’s suggestion. I thought the same when I saw the name, too!

Is there a way to suggest it, at least, to the devs? My display name was a stupid decision and I would without a doubt pay gems to correct it =.=
