Hey! I have a Lenovo Ideapad y550 and when im playing guild wars 2, my laptop will shut off on me randomly. Sometimes it will happen within 15 minutes of being in the game. Sometimes it will happen after about 2 hours of playing, sometimes shorter and sometimes longer. I tried most of the fixes I could find. But still nothing.
I even gave this a try: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/FPS-and-Performance-based-issues-1
It seems the machine has recently had a reformat from the pawn shop that I had bought it from. Here is some useful information from the System Information file.

What makes you think it isn’t heat related?
If you bought this from a pawn shop I would highly recommend wiping it and installing a OS yourself. (its like buying used underwear and not washing it =) )
Not sure how you are measuring the temps, but shutdowns often point to either heat or power issues. (see Part 5.1 for tools)

It very well could be heat related. I just put no heat because no part of the laptop is warm when im gaming usually. the fan is blowing out a warmish air. But it is still not very warm at all.
I haven’t measured the temp yet, I assumed since my other computer can burn my lap and still not shutdown. this computer is cold and shutting down.
If you look at the system information I provided, at the very bottom. I did a search online for ACPI and it seems that its part of a power management thing?
I don’t have any OS’s I am a very poor person that received this awesome game for Christmas. =] I am wondering If there is a way to hold a key when the laptop starts up to do a factory reset? Then I could download all the drivers from the website? I am trying to find a way to do this without any cost if possible.
Might be a sticker under the laptop with the OS KEY, if not you can try contacting Lenovo. Should try monitoring the temps. (see Part 5.1)

The sticker is actually rubbed some, so a few of the numbers are unreadable. how would I go about with a clean install of win 7 without discs?
Will monitor the temps and get back with you.

I was afraid to hit any download buttons on any of those sites. Sorry bud. HwInfo is the only one that sounds semi-legit. But its the one with the most questionable download links all over the page.. Ill look around for a temp meter.

Posted by: Frozencapsule.1534
Do you get commissions for each of those pages? Because if I was some newcomer to video games and got guild wars as a gift, you would have just made some cash. And I would have some spyware on my computer. hehe. Might wanna find a new temp meter. Unless you really are getting commissions. =P
Use google and do some research. Those tools are freeware and widely used by many people.

Its not a heating problems. There was a lot of people having this issue and I was one of them. Its your Video Driver/Graphics Card its probably out of date. Update it and then it should be fixed.

I will update the drivers now and see what happens. Do I just update the graphics or should I update direct x as well?
How should I go about the driver update? Should I download the driver for my machine from here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073108
Or should I get the download from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win8-win7-winvista-64bit-310.90-whql-driver.html
Also.. I have seen in other forums that people are saying there is a type of beta driver for my machine that would fix the shutting down?
It can be found here: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/beta-legacy

When I had this problem I used nvidia’s site.

But your driver is different from mine so it could be that or the one you said people are suggesting. I would try one of those.

Well. It appears that the driver for my graphics on the lenovo website is :
8.16.11.8990 21 Oct 2009
And it seems that the one I have in device manager is:
8.17.12.5896 9 July 2010
So that rules out the Lenovo website for my driver. So now its for sure the nvidia site I will need.
So with that being said, I think I will run the updated driver. And if that does not work, I will do the Beta/Legacy driver?
I will keep everyone updated, in case anyone else has this problem in the future.

Also, take note that I use Avast Antivirus. Not sure if that has anything to do with anything. But it is possible.

DO NOT restore this machine, or you’ll be left with Windows Vista. Which isn’t as bad as some might say, but may leave you in a worse spot for gaming.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/System-Crashes/#post1163947 You can try the instructions I left there, unless the system is simply powering off completely.
If it shuts off completely, there’s a power issue somewhere. Could be capacitors overheating, could be that the system is pulling more power from the battery than it will output. You can try using the system with no battery and see if that helps.

Is that because it comes default with this model of computer? I was wondering if the Pawn Shop put win 7 on it. The sticker’s were took off the part that you rest your palm. So I wasn’t sure what windows it came with.
I am not planning on restoring it, it had a pretty swift reformat from the pawn shop.
It definitely just shuts right off. But when I unplug the AC adapter it also shuts right off.
If you look up top, the results from the temperature test show some voltage stuff, I just dont know how to read it.
It also shows my virtual ram and all that other stuff in the System Information post I put up. I just dont know how to read these things.
I am installing the Nvidia drivers now to see if they work, if not I’m going to install the legacy/beta drivers and see if those work.
I have also already installed the drivers for the “Problem Devices” in my System Information file.

Yeah, they threw Win7 on it. Which is probably helping, really.
Sounds like the battery is bad, and it may pull extra power from the battery when needed. Notebooks are a bit odd, some power circuits require a battery, some don’t, some of them use the battery to provide extra power when the AC adapter droops.
Sadly, probably something you’ll just have to live with, unless you can find an inexpensive battery to try out.

Although It appears that it saved the driver files on my C drive where the older drivers are. I provided that in the screenshot as well.
Maybe there’s a way I can bypass that message and update the driver myself? Or is there a way I can tell that driver that there is a graphics card?
it shows my card is supported in the "supported Driver’s section of the update for my card.

That’s… strange. Take a look at the battery connectors (The notebook side) and make sure there isn’t any corrosion. I went looking for a Lenovo Power Management utility, since that’s supposed to have a way to reset the battery, but didn’t see anything.

Guild wars 2 can run on my other computer with weaker graphics, but higher ram and 4 cores. It can get pretty hot with the fan blasting and the game wont shut down. Runs at like 7 FPS though lol..
But this computer will shut off within 15-20 minutes of being in the game. So i’m not entirely sure whats going on. But that’s why I’m posting here. I can in fact play Starcraft 2 or WoW on this computer for hours and not experience any shutdowns.

Try to get that Vista x64 Energy Management driver installed (if you haven’t), then go to control panel > Power Options and see if it adds some more power management settings, it might add the battery reset (which might just be a discharge/recharge, but they may’ve pulled an Apple and put some strange power management controller in it)
If it works fine in other games, try turning EVERYTHING down in the GW2 settings, including the audio quality, audio latency up, etc. Then start turning things back up.

Since it doesn’t look like there’re too many options, try High Performance? Maybe it is going to sleep for some reason?
If you can find working Win7 drivers, use those. Otherwise, Vista drivers should be fine.
Use the laptopvideo2go drivers for the GPU. You won’t be able to use any of the nVidia drivers (except Lenovo’s, use Win7 drivers off Lenovo’s site if you have to)

Download the INF that matches your driver version. If none of those match, you can go to laptopvideo2go.com and build a custom INF.
You then copy the INF into the folder your nVidia drivers were extracted to. Then you should be able to manually install them. You’ll have to choose them by hand, though. The automatic detection likely won’t work.

Make a System Restore point before installing the driver.
You can try the “Roll Back” option on the device manager properties page, or you can use the restore point.
Good luck!

There is no .Inf to replace in my Nvidia driver folder for the 310.70 driver. What should I do? =/
“Update” : I took the battery out and plugged into my own outlet on the wall. The computer still shut off within 10-15 minutes.
I also removed Avast Antivirus , Still experienced the crash within 10 minutes or so.
ran a program capatability detection. it set it for windows xp service pack 2. Still crashed.
Checked the temps right before it crashed and the graphics card was 80C

I noticed an Issue last night. It seems the new battery I got from amazon does something different then the old battery from lenovo.
The new battery from amazon will shut off directly after I unplug the A/C adapter.
The old battery from lenovo will stay on and the charge meter will start rapidly going down, and in about 3 minutes the machine will shut itself off.
So I got a picture o the 2 batteries in case you can detect the difference? The old battery from Lenovo is on the top. The new battery from Amazon is at the bottom.
Picture: http://sta.sh/067edv4w1r1
I also tried putting the old lenovo battery back in and tried playing the game, still got a shutdown within 15 minutes of being in the game. I even tried playing with no battery and on my own private plug in a section of the garage that gets the highest voltages.
Still shutdowns.
I really wish I can figure this out! Still cant find the INF to change.
Thanks so much!

The new battery is probably bad, if the old one functions in the system. If you can, try and return it/exchange it for a 56-59wH battery instead, that more closely matches the original. I wouldn’t pay for a new one or anything, though.
Not sure why you’re missing that INF. You might try downloading the desktop drivers instead. Won’t hurt to try them.

Okay I’ll see what I can do. I’m even wondering if I should just go straight to trying a beta driver if this gets to much more difficult? Also I’m going to try some different things like running in windowed..etc. but the battery is obviously not the issue here.
Is there maybe something to check in my power options or graphics card power options? I’ve checked everything in and out I’m sure. But I could be missing something?
There are a few different drivers to choose from. I’m not sure which one. I started looking through 2 of the release notes but that was starting to take a very long time. Do I need a specific one that fixes the guild wars issue? Or can I just download the latest one and It “Includes” all the fixes from the previous updates as well?
The ones too choose are:

You can access this if you or anyone else want to check out the release notes for themselves for reference:

As soon as you get back with me I will get this show on the road. I just don’t want to start with each drive and read the release notes till I find which one I need if I can just get the most latest one and it still include the fixes. Thanks so much!

Is this a different driver to try? Is this one supposed to have the .inf that is missing?
Update: Having the same issue: http://sta.sh/017m4114l21v
I don’t understand this all that well. But maybe it can help?

This is way to hard for me. Almost makes me want to give up. I am wondering if one of you kind souls would help me out.
Just give me your email and ill send you my .Inf file and you can send it back.
I cant figure this out, I’ve been sitting here angry and patient all day. =[
