Q:

This started yesterday afternoon my time (AEDT) after the build update. This has never happened before. It was unplayable for that afternoon for 5 hrs. Then it became fine all of a sudden so I decided to hold off support. But today after logging on around the same time it has become unplayable again. My internet is totally fine after doing thorough testing/resetting. Everything else on my pc that uses the internet is working perfectly – it is just GW2 right now – which has worked fine for me for years til yesterday.

Right now I am experiencing overall game lag, along with rubber banding (especially when using mobility skills), general skill lag, and everyone around me – especially high population areas like WvW, is blinking around.

I have done a traceroute and it appears my connection is fine locally but as soon as I am entering Anet/NCSoft servers I am getting massive packet loss.

Any assistance as to the cause or solutions extremely appreciated.

XeRauS, I see a couple of issues with the pathping you posted above.

This part shows you have 4% packet loss (4 out of 100 packets) between what looks like your router and your modem. I’d start by rebooting both of those as this will affect your day to day internet traffic not just Gw2.

0 Alan-PC.Home [192.168.1.5]
0/ 100 = 0% |
1 0ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% NB304N.Home [192.168.1.1]
4/ 100 = 4% |
2 18ms 4/ 100 = 4% 0/ 100 = 0% 10.20.21.170

The problem that is most likely giving you issues with the game is at the hand off between TPGI and Telia. There is 37% packet loss there which is pretty bad and the latency skyrockets from 31ms to 244ms.

6 31ms 6/ 100 = 6% 0/ 100 = 0% syd-gls-har-int1-be-10.tpgi.com.au[203.29.129.131]
37/ 100 = 37% |
7 244ms 50/ 100 = 50% 7/ 100 = 7% las-b3-link.telia.net [213.155.129.245]

You should contact your ISP with the pathping above and report the problem.
Also, you may want to try running the pathping to the EU server and see if packet loss and latency is better there. Being in Australia you may have a better experience playing there.

Hope that helps.

Hello Brad. My modem and router are the same device. I have rebooted my modem and done speedtests etc and other areas of internet usage and everything else is perfectly fine.

So is there a possible explanation or cause as to why I’m losing so many packets once my connection tries to reach Telia? The ms increase is normal as I am playing from Australia.

I would like to add the most odd thing is the game is unplayable during the day but as soon as the time reaches around 5pm AEDT the game works as it used to again. This has been consistent for the past 4 days, where I have logged on around 11am AEDT and it remains unplayable til 5pm AEDT where it miraculously fixes itself. That pathping you requested of me was actually taken after 5pm that day where the game became playable again yet still yielded those results? This is ruining my GW2 experience as this is mainly the period I am able to play right now.

Hey XeRauS & Brad,
Not sure if this will help or hinder, but it’s just more data for you both. I’m from East coast Australia, playing on NA. I’m also with TPG with the NBN (guessing you are based on the naming in the traceroute)? Could be wrong though. My NBN is the 100down/40up. Modem and router also one unit. [Edit: sorry – was 9am in the morning local time – if I’m on between 11 and 5pm I’ll run it again just out of interest].

I ran this pathping WHILE playing – absolutely no lag at all while playing; did some heart quests in frostgorge etc. No skill lag, no movement lag at all.

I post it because I got NO lag while playing BUT had the same packet losses that you have.

Interesting?

A pathping isn’t the whole story but it’s usually very telling. In this case it’s possible the routers dropping pings are just de-prioritizing ICMP (ping) packets but usually it’s indicative of a problem, especially when seen on the link between hops.

Also, some packet loss is tolerated but it can cause lag and disconnects if it gets too high.

XeRauS, packet loss is amplified the further down the path you go so that could explain the loss between your ISP and Telia, but it could also be a real issue. I’d encourage you to contact you ISP about it and give them the pathping you provided here. I’ll see if we can do anything from our side.

Very interesting Poitus. I am with TPG also but only on ADSL (unlimited so there isn’t a cap or anything during the day). It has never been an issue though until just before xmas this year. As I mentioned I did do that pathping after 5pm which is when it becomes fine oddly and it still shows packet loss just as it would before 5pm. But then like you said, you have no lag whatsoever even with the packet loss. For me it is extremely odd, as the readings are the same yet it is unplayable before 5pm and it goes back to how it has always been for years after 5pm. I am uncertain when it becomes unplayable again in the middle of the night as I don’t stay up that late to find out. As I said the rest of my internet has no issues whatsoever.

Currently the issue still is occurring as I am trying to play right now at 12pm but simply using a skill like lightning flash is rubber banding me and everyone is blinking around.

Thanks very much for your input though!

I have had lag issues for the past few days as well. I connect to NA servers from Australia.

My ping is normally around 250-300 ms, which is playable. In the past few days it has gone to 550-600 ms. The ping can go very high when a large number of players/creatures are nearby. The ping becomes worse the longer I am connected to GW2.

I’ll see if we can do anything from our side.

I have contacted my ISP (Telia Sonera), and reported the errors they have with one of the backbone-servers, the response was something like this:
We can see there is a problem, specified server is not responding to tracert/ping, but as you are a private person we can not do anything about it. Contact Ncsoft and tell them to contact us about the problem.

That was 2 days ago, and I have contacted you (ncsoft) about it. So yes, there is something you can do from your side, as that is what Telia Sonera wants.

I and several other users get caught in the middle, with dc/lagspikes/cant login/can login but not choose character/map dont load etc.

Not all users write on forum, nor do they send in tickets. They simply do something else and hopes the problem goes away and that they can next day be able to play again, and hopefully for more then 8-10 min before dc.

So Stupendous Man and I had a chat in game for a while and it seems we are having very similar problems. It is simply unplayable (extreme lag/delays, rubber banding, blinking around) for us for most of the day, where the night seems to be ok. Both of us are getting a lot of packet loss with that pathping no matter the time – i.e. no matter if it is during the playable or unplayable period. It seems to be very consistent when the playable and unplayable periods are every day for the past 5 or so days since this has started happening. Poitus also receives similar packet loss yet has no lag whatsoever, so I’m beginning to believe the packet loss readings are not directly related to the issues.

Hmm interesting.

Telia is a northern European telco company that operates there right? What I’m curious about is why I am connecting through there when I’m from Australia and playing on NA.

That last paragraph is very true.

Pong, our link with Telia is not down. I can assure you of that

XeRauS, thank you for continuing to provide more information. I can’t speak to why you and Stupendous Man are seeing different results but in all of the pathpings you’ve provided there is a considerable amount of congestion between links which is very likely causing some, if not all, of your problem.

When you see packet loss to a specific host it may be that ICMP is disabled or is being deprioritized on that hop but packet loss between hops is bad.

I’m compiling all of this data so I have a full picture to work with. Thanks again for sending it in!

I know that the link with telia is not down.
It WAS down/unreachable even by Telia customer support, confirmed by Telia itself. As I wrote:

This is interesting – we’re both TPG – are you NBN? I’m on the Riverstone exchange with NBN, and my latency times (matched to your s/shot above) are;

410
235

Apart from the TP error currently going on, I’m playing fine. Our pathpings divert pretty early on though (the first TPG skip).

cool. just tried a pm in-game, but you were offline, so sent you a mail. I’ll be on and off all day today. I also suggested to XeRaus to try the Whirpool TPG forums as TPG reps frequent there a lot, and seem to reply very quickly. Would be interesting if the 3 of us got on a map together (or a dungeon) to compare to try and knock out the problem.

Brad and all,
The 3 of us did some testing this arvo (Stup, Xe and I). They both had latency issues (skill lag etc), whilst I was fine. We tested in HotM, and within an instance of AC story. Same results in both.
I’ve taken some trace routes, but I noticed one thing when looking at the info.
When both Stup and Xe and working fine (based on graphic dumps in this post), the x.×.40.117 IP address is one of their connected addresses (today, mine was .40.117). While they were having issues today, theirs were (.40.116 and .40.121). In their ‘bad times’ from graphic s/shots above, they also don’t have .117. Might be not related at all, but I mention it anyway.
Anything more we can do our end to give you more data to check-in with Telia?
Thanks,
Poitus

Hey Poitus. Thanks a lot for your input. Last night (sometime after 5:30pm AEDT when it was playable) Stupendous Man and I checked the IPs of our GW2 connections and they didn’t end in .117 and were more similar to those when it was unplayable. Just thought I’d update.

So basically so far we haven’t really gotten any closer to finding out the cause or solutions to the problem yet. And today another thread with someone else experiencing very similar issues https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Extreme-latency-NA/first#post4661573

That is certainly very interesting. My ISP is not Telia but I’ve seen that the traffic gets routed through Telia nodes and have noticed packet loss there when I’ve had crippling lag.

I really hope this issue gets thoroughly investigated by anet instead of the boilerplate “the issue is with your ISP” that everyone I know recieves when everything except GW2 works perfectly fine and GW2 is unplayable.

I am getting my information from my ISP (TeliaSonera). All I know, atm is

tekniker beräknar att problemet ska vara åtgärdat 2015-01-02.

translated by me:
techs estimate that the problem should be fixed 2015-01-02 (second of janary)

As it is me that reported the errors on Telia´s gear, it should be a fix on Telia´s gear.
Yesterday 01-01 it worked flawless for me, but I did not do much wvw where I used to have 1-3 sec skill-delay during primetime, even if not in battle.
Days before that, and after my last post I was not at home and most likely not using same path to gw2.

I have reported 62.115.43.74 and also, in short: it is problems with at least one of your backboneservers that other ISP´s are using. It involves several users in Europe that plays game from ncsoft. It occurs about every 14th day, and more often during holidays/weekends"
((Explanation abt every 14th day = patch-time))

EDIT:
Darn… techs could not find any problems with the server.
I got refered to Premium Support (which costs 2 euro or 2.42 USD /min, max charge 63.47 euro or 76.42 USD). I am not sure if I should call or not (only open 9-16 workdays)
