directx 11 would certainly help by reducing CPU overhead that DirectX9’s state management causes.
After the fiasco that was The Lost Shores, any technical patch would be appreciated.
Strangely it seems that Anet has been very silent on the myriad of complaints regarding WvW and Zerg events that bring powerful computers to their knees.
I don’t think that there will ever be a DX11 patch for this game, but I do hold out hope that someday the massive battles will play out as they were intended.
With everything cranked(including supersampling and a certain 3rd party fx filter) the game looks stunning. I have lowered my settings to as low as they will go(even subsampling) and there is 0% performance difference in massive battles.
CPU based games are fine as long as the content reflects this. Having massive battles with tons of people firing off spells and skills is great if the code/servers can handle it. Currently it seems that it cannot.
3 hours of Lost Coast end event battle at 5-20 fps is not fun. When you can’t use skills, Invisibaddies kill instantaneously, and some people getting disconnected there is a blatant issue that this company cannot and should not ignore any longer.
I think that this game needs a performance update immediately before more people leave the game for greener pastures.
Go look at the GW2 facebook page regarding how bad the event was from a performance standpoint and tell me if I am wrong.

tbh GW2 is not just the best looking MMO out there, it’s one of the best looking games, DX9 or DX11, it’s still beautiful.
This is complete false information. You have to play every other game before you can make this determination.
Currently, TERA is THE BEST LOOKING DX9 game on the planet. Hands down.
Also, you’ve never played it. Most of you would cry at it’s difficulty. I did.
tera is overly “pretty” but not technically that good looking. it over uses bloom/hdr to such extremes that it’s hard on the eyes.
gw2 is actually better looking on a tehcnical basis, but not by much.
How does something look “technically” better. Never ever say GW2 looks better than TERA. EVER. EVER.
MrDmajor actually with supersampling and SweetFX they are pretty darn close imo

Only if they refactor the code to be efficient with 11. A straight conversion from 9 to 10 (or 11) leaves the code less efficient.
For most things the GPU is the same and will preform and look the same in 9 or 11. Most of the big differences are not taken advantage of yet by modern games (being able to bind a huge number of textures to the shaders, rendering into volumetric textures, integration with compute shaders, exposing enormous amounts of metadata to shaders via the constant buffers relative to 9).

From a scale standpoint, that screenshot is a very pretty 240×240 cutout compared to the one I provided. Where is the field of view? I barely see anything in my viewing screen. Also, I didn’t need outside programs to improve visual quality; if I used sweetfx and that new AA on Tera it would have looked better i’m sure.
Not to mention your cutout of a screenshot runs at 30fps when 20+ people are present while Tera maintains 60fps.
Bump, and I am just done with this game. I can’t do what I want to do at above 20fps, no matter the settings. From the time I created this thread nothing has been done, in fact I think it got worse.
Let me know ARENANET when the “MMO”(20+ people) aspects leave their beta stage so I can come back. Until then, their are better alternatives for entertainment.
Farcry3 at the moment seems to enjoy my hardware at 100% GPU/CPU usage, and I manage 60fps on maximum settings, I’ll let the game speak for itself on the visuals when it comes out tomorrow.
I suggest you guys fix your game though before adding any more content, lest you die to this ‘Next-Gen’ rolling around the corner.
I have asked this whole same thing from them couple times. NEVER got any kind of answer from them. I would REALLY be satisfised if I would even know they look this topic at all and would give us something small about this whole DX11 or just improving the CPU usage.
In WvW I can’t get any better fps even when I use lowest settings. I normally always play with high – highest but there is no way of keeping solid 60 fps even with lowest. So there is clearly something wrong with the whole game engine.
So are we just left here only quessing the day of DX11 to come or could we finally get ANY word from them and I mean ANYTHING to even know that they look into this.
Still reading this? You know there is something better to be done for sure. -.-’’
See there is the primary difference between us there. I don’t WvW because my entire computer lags out, not just the graphics.
then you dont belong in this thread bro. as simple as that.

Ironically, I ‘do’ need an nVidia patch related to DX11, but it doesn’t have anything to do with GW2.
I need it because my DX11 broke in TSW when I updated to Windows 8.
Everything else is fine, though I need to come up with a full, disaster recover back-up solution to replace Ghost 15 which had served me well for many years through many versions. Remains to be seen whether Symantec will be making something new. Sure, there’s RecImg Manager, but it’s a completely different philosophy. I like full on drive failure solutions which can also be used to restore one or two files at a time, though I can see situations where RecImg Manager will be useful as well.
So uhm…yeah, moar nVidia fixes for Windows 8!
In answer to your question, about the same time they fix the culling issue in WvWvW.
Isle of Janthir
It doesn’t use a chunk of Vram for processing from my expierence. Uses alot more Dram.
Anyway.
I’m running steady at 1920×1080
With everything maxed
I’ve disabled the ingame FXAA and enabled some different filters in Nvidia control panel, just because i find them less curvy and shraper that way.Post processing makes the game look too bright, disabling the bloom effect made it look more vivid.
Bloom definitely loses it from HDR.I’m running;
- AMD Athlon II x4 650 @ OC 3.1ghz – just a minor automated clock for 100 mhz.
- DDR3 1333mhz 4 GB
- Nvidia Geforce 630GT @ OC MemClock – 1020 / ShadClock – 1840 / GPUclock 920Everything runs stable under heavy workload @ 40-45c
Thing didn’t cost alot, basically runs everything stable at 40 fps from WvW to Cities.
Never see a fps drop, so i don’t exactly know what’s dipping it for alot of people.Besides that, a lot of effects and shaders work better under DX11
Would love to know what nvidia settings you set in your profile or even the nvidia inspector settings.

my 560TI is good. at least with playable frame rate.
The game looks awesome enough, no hurry need for a DX11 patch imo
I heard about DX11 patch in the game but only in some areas, designers wont work it all again with DX11, and they still want it compatible soo there will be huge limitations in how good the game it’s going to look like.
About that Nvidia Perfomance, I know, it’s awfull, i just updated my drivers and game became with unplayable FPS, then I needed to use old drivers.
Also I wonder because Tera Uses DX11 with better graphics than GW2 (GW2 doesn’t got better graphics, but yes ART and Design), and Tera with me ran much but much better than GW2 sadly, and it uses DX11 far I know.
This one looks “late” it’s still a DX9 game, launched in 2012. Ah do what anyway :P
Asura thing.
Oh actually I want to point out the rendering system is surely bad for WvW: ppl just show up next to you sometimes….

Try disabling the Ambient Occlusion filters they seem pretty stretchy for what its worth just like the actual FXAA filters.
All they did was enable it for the GW2 profile…
bad news guys, arenanet has read this thread, but only to punish me for bumping it. That means they simply don’t care; this game will never run above 20fps in WvW and large player events, really sad.
But we have ascended gear and fractals.
Oh…wait. We had that in the other game we used to play and left the hamster wheel we thought
Johnny Johnny – Ranger (Ehmry Bay)
Hárvey Wallbanger – Alt Warrior (Ehmry Bay)
Waiting on a Dx11 patch as well. Hopefully we will get an update on it soon.
The game already looks great, at the very least we need Dx11 rendering to improve frame rates, similar to the option in World of Warcraft. A few other options would hurt as well; FXAA is so blurry lol.
The engine is built on dx9. The money needed is too much to change it. I would doubt any major things like this to be release until an expansion.
which operating system are you using?
I know with my older set up Quad core, nivdia 560 gtx, 4 gb ram, I have to run everyrthing on low in case of a battle and wvw I don’t see anyone in a Zerc fight . I know most of my problem is the crappy win7 32 bit I have on atm ,the game just dosn’t like it at all, where I can run BF3 reasonable easy on high- max settings. wish they would fix it because when on ultra settings the game looks fantastic, just can’t kill anything in a group lol
Holy necro, batman! I also love how these issues are still a problem (including culling LOL)
2month old thread.
This game is so badly optimized, they should optimized it first before experimenting with Dx10 and Dx11
Also, more importantly. When in the world are they going to fix support w/ nvida cards?
I have two 560Ti OC in SLI and my performance in the game (especially wvw) is unacceptable. I overclocked my 3.3ghz quad core i5 to 4.0ghz quad core w/ 0
improvement. I also run the fastest possible 8gb DDR3 ram set and SSD hard drive.I know for a fact that a team on nvidia engineers went to your facility a couple weeks back to help you guys fix this, what is the ETA on this as well? Again, 2012? Q1 2013?
I think we would all like to know, because in its current state this game is not possible to play at 60FPS in every situation (and thats not even on your ultra or high settings).
I’m sure Nvidia would love to put in their infamous The way it’s meant to be played “support” but fortunately this game’s engine is not build around Nvidia drivers alone.

whats funny is..they could have added DX11 during the development process…. new mmos’s are coming out with it (elder scrolls online, its been in production for years like GW2) and older MMOs have already added it
besides gagmes like witcher 2 look beautiful with DX9 but its a solo game…DX11 has many performance benefits besides pretty effects that would help GW2 in th elong run since it still runs like crap on many high end systems that can run games like witcher 2 maxed (like mine)
I am necromancing this to show the devs how old these issues are.
Will this community EVER get and answer to our questions or are we just typing to ourselves?

Login issues are starting to become a monthly tradition.
I doubt we’re gonna see performance optimization of any kind until they figure their own game out.
I’m a nivida GTX 670 user, interested when this is going to get fixed.
The games performance has dropped slowly over time since release, I have noticed this as well. I also used to get like 120 FPS maxed out, and 75-90 in highly populated situations which is not usually the case anymore, I usually hit between 50-85 FPS now. But I’m pretty sure they’re actively working on improving those things but it takes a while to figure it out, and then actually fix it. As for official nvidia patch boosting support of GW2, that’s probably up to Anet doing what they have to on their end first.

GW2 does look better than TERA. I played TERA, the screenshots like the one you posted look far better than the game actually does in action. It’s very nice looking game, yes…But GW2 is superior. The character models in TERA are dead and plasticy, mostly expressionless and awkward. Environmentally speaking that game doesn’t even come close to the scale of GW2, it feels like an old fashioned MMO at a much higher resolution set of texture packs, where as GW2 has given me and people I know moments where it feels like a world.
I’m running an old Best Buy HP rig with a Phenom II quad core. I’ve only upgrade the power supply and GPU to a Nvidia 560ti (pretty sure, nothing too fancy anyway) and I seriously get 60+ FPS everywhere running at 1080p, AA on (at lowest setting), shadows on high (not ultra) and everything else at max. I might drop down to 25-30 in WvW, but that is seriously not a problem.
I’m not discrediting anybody else in this thread. However, I felt compelled to not be a negative Nancy in all this and share that my experience has been fantastic with a less than stellar rig. GW2 runs better than SWTOR and better than Rift and it looks way better than both of those games (IMO) to boot.

Well i n fairness is there a game more poorly optimised than SWTOR… the performance in that game has been shocking since Beta… at launch they disables the high res graphics (sighting it was never meant to be in beta let alone the game). It only began improving FPS issues when 3/4 of the playerbase had left so instancing was almost ghost townish …. man those forums were beyond harsh they were darn right bloodfueled
I run a i73700, 1Gb ripjaw DDR3’s, dual, Mushkin SSD’s and dual Nvidia 560Ti’s.. and tbh I just dont use the second card cos its just not worth it, I get better FPS using single card but WvW is so poor I only play it to get map completions, I find no fun in stepping into a lagfest and getting <10FPS constantly until the battle is over. Everywhere else I see 40-60FPS pretty constantly and its no issues at all except in Dragon zergs etc where the amount culling and particle effects go crazy… but anymore than 60FPS and I start to not notice anyway.
Nvidia just released a new driver update, so I’ll try it and see if I get any improvement but I am not holding my breath, this kind of game issue takes time to get to grips with I am guessing.

But i really like trees and some other things in TERA so its hard to tell which one looks better. Well, I disagree that gw2 would have better graphics than tera. For sure those engines are far from each other, other being new and other being years old. For sure gw2 has a lot better ATMOSPHERE than tera but the graphics are just so great in tera that I can’t see how gw2 would have any chance on that. As a game gw2 wins so easily, tera even went just f2p so I think that tells something about the game too…
To stay on topic, I really hope we get the dx11 supports at least this year. I for one don’t really just play WvW just because there is no way I could enjoy of it. Playing other games on high/ultra but gw2 just lacks on optimization. This topic has now been on for 4months and I believe we have to wait at least same time before answer for this question or even devs saying anything.

the problem is the LOD settings in tera are bugged, you actually need to change the LOD setting to 1 below max (i think that was it) to get proper distance detail, its a known issue and you can fix it by editing a config file (i google it and re-do it after each major patch, I also add a 100fov hotkey because, honestly, the game looks alot better with 100fov…..to bad i cant do that with GW2…..)
gw2’s issues run very deep, and no, I dont agree gw2 looks better then tera, I think they both have good and bad points in their gfx, I think tera despite its issues is currently the better choice if you want decent FPS for casule gaming.
even rift runs better for me then gw2…….
Tera uses UE3
Rift uses GameBryo
both run better then gw2’s engine,
WoW uses an updated version of the warcraft3 engine, and it runs better then gw2…

its been updated to use multi cores, its been updated to dx11(showing a NICE perf boost, and dx11 mode even works with dx10 cards up to the level of their feature-set(my 8800gtx512 saw a perf boost)
guild wars came out in 2005

the guild wars engine is far newer then the starting point for WoWs engine….yet……blizzard has managed to make the engine modern and keep it running well on low end to high end systems….
GameBryo the engine used in morrowind/oblivion/skyrim/rift and lots of other games was orignally designed in 1997…..yet its been updated to run dx11 as well as run better then gw2’s engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamebyro
people need to stop giving anet excuses about their engine being based on gw1’s engine…..the fact is they did a hack job when they “updated” the engine for use in gw2…..
worse being that its designed for a 6-8ghz tricore…..
please, stop excusing anets kitten up’s, they need to fix this.
note: this isnt about nVidia, or AMD or Intel, the game works fine for many SLI users, I mean as fine as it can compared to other games, it still runs like warmed over donkey poo but…….sli does work for many people…..(i have seen it scale to both cards using 70%, and thats pretty good considering how cpu bound the game is)

Great post. I just believe that the only way for us the get any information about this would be to just keep these kind of topics alive and post on them continuously, maybe then devs will actually answer these…
I believe also that the part reason for the devs not answering could be that there just isn’t anyone who really knows about these like things, but why couldn’t they then come here and say that “they pass this on to the people with more knowledge about these sort of things”. That’s what they do normally but here it looks like they are ignoring the topics about CPU/GPU.
Keep these up!
Still reading this? You know there is something better to be done for sure. -.-’’
I never saw any announcements that they were going to have a DX10+ patch/version on release day. I saw announcements that said “after release”.
“I know for a fact that a team of nvidia engineers went to your facility a couple weeks pack to help you guys fix this?” Again, where are you getting your facts?
I run an nVidia card in my subpar rig and the game is both playable and looks nice. I don’t get 60fps but I don’t need to since the human brain processes about 24fps into fluid motion.
the whole fps thing is how many frames are being rendered games dont output frames exactly the same as something like a movie which does only run at 24p because the human eye and brain cant really tell the difference after that because an effect of motion blur happens anything past 60 thats why they have tv’s with “true motion” to help fix this blur you will see from anything moving to fast for either your eye or monitor/tv to catch up to . and a game with 60fps will look great a movie with 60fps will look like kitten

actually Selene I have seen videos at 60 and even 120fps, when done properly they look great the reason nobody has moved to thats the standard is pretty simple though, it would suck up more storage space and bandwidth.
most moives today are between 23 and 30fps m the 2 most common video formats to this day are NTSC and PAL, 29.97 fps for NTSC and 25 fps for PAL

buying a 120hz hdtv I see as acceptable, 240 is stupid, even if you use it as a monitor with your computer, most peoples videocards cant output 240hz at 1080p, and NO video player devices or consoles can……

look those over and take special note of the dx9 vs dx11, on an engine even older then the one in gw2…..

the brain can tell the difference between 24 frames vs 48 or 60. The reason why it is not a problem in movies is because you are not interacting with the media.

loseridiot, its actually more related to motion blur, they are infact finding issues with HD camaras that remove that blur, people get upset by the lack of it in the image….
if you read and watch some of the stuff about it, its quite interesting.
the problem is, motion blur in games tends to bug gamers because, we dont want or need it(we are use to not having it, also, i have seen some pretty horrible blur effects in games)

Interacting with media makes a huge difference. People get motion sickness if fps is very low.
I know that movies traditionally had motion blur. In fact, the new The Hobbit is filmed in 48 fps which ruin some of the climatic scenes
However, you do not have to interact with movies which mean your brain can just treat it as a picture on a wall
