I submitted a ticket yesterday regarding crashes. I was told to run an msconfig. That change caused my computer to BSOD.

Here’s my error info:

Every time this has happened, I run repair. Last night I ran it several times to no avail. Today it worked just fine for a while and then again started crashing randomly. I’m not zoning, it’s just standing around town. This started happening yesterday—no crashes before.

Now I crash half the time when I log in initially, sometimes after a few minutes of standing around. I reinstalled the game earlier, after deleting everything including the local.dat file. I made sure DirectX 9 was up to date. My graphics drivers are up to date. My computer is not overheating (checked it). No other programs are having any issues. GW2 is just shooting corrupt files everywhere.

If its telling you that theres a fatal disk error or corrupted files try running CHKDSK. It worked for me. The way you do it is right click on your C drive, click properties, go to Tools tab, and it should be the first tool. Once you click “run” it will ask if you want to have it repair corrupted files or sectors. There’s also another option that I can’t remember. Just check-box that first option and hit “Ok” then restart your computer. It may take a long time though so only do this when you dont need the computer for anything.

Personally, my scan froze when it started trying to replace and repair corrupted GW2 files but when I restarted my computer again (while the scan was frozen) it seemed to have worked and I haven’t had a crash since then.

Hope this helps. If my instructions didn’t help you get to the CHKDSK command then try googling how to get there.

Bonjour,
Same problem as every one with this 591 corrupted file story!
I was just wondering if at Anet you are doing anything about it, since no one ever reply to us! I am tired of running the repair many time a day in order to play the game! Nothing wrong with my PC, I have over 100 games on STEAM which run perfectly, and without crashing! If you can’t find the solution, or the problem, please say so, at least we will know where we stand! Lovely game, but it seems we are still playing the Beta!
On top of that, I had to remove one of my graphic card, since GW2 and crossfire are not good friend yet! I play as I said early any other games without a single problem, so obviously the problem is GW2!
Thanks for the no reply,
Kindly,
A fed up player like too many!

If on one side u got 100 games working without a single problem, and on the other side, 1 single game which keep on crashing every 1/2 hour, and when you repair the game you have more corrupted file than when you started, It is quiet obvious that it is the single game which cause the problem, and not the Hardware who run 100 games perfectly! He has a bad texture. 197186 is a 256×256 texture. A -verify or a -repair should fix the issue, eventually.

If it doesn’t fix the issue, either the .dat will need to be copied out, will need to be rebuilt, or he’ll need to file a support ticket.

You all have different files which are bad. One of you has a bad statue model, one of you has a bad sea-floor texture.

And I think OP has a bad Kodan.

Anyone found a fix to this? My buddy has an NVIDIA GTX 560, and he is crashing constantly every 1-10 minutes he is crashing. He repairs every time and he continues to get more and more corrupt files every time. He has tried msconfig, new drivers, clean game install, everything.

Anyone found out how to fix this??

I understand why we are crashing, the real problem is that the verification/repair process is not downloading and fixing the bugged files. Because of this, we keep crashing.
Your solution is to repair, well i have repaired about 20+ times now and i have deleted the entire dat file and redownloaded everything from scratch, that dint fix it still.

Ok, this problem is getting ridiculous, my buddy cannot even play the game anymore. He has repaired about 40+ times, each time with more corrupted files, he has re-installed drivers, re installed the game and .dat, I originally thought he may have some bad sectors in his hard drive, but ran CHKDSK and it’s fine, as Well as every other game he has ran is still running fine. He ran MSCONFIG, we tried disabling drivers, we tried running in trouble shoot comparability mode, nothing.

He’s having the exact same issues as every one else in this thread. He has no other applications running at the time he activates gw2. The game just crashes and then continues to remove tons and tons of corrupted files, he repairs, then the files immediately are corrupted again next time he plays/crashes. NTFS is fine, no issues with the file system. From what I see every one that has this issue has an NVIDIA card.

He has been working with tech support for about he last week and no avail.

I would like to teamviewer with anyone experiencing this repair failure, so that i can capture file system behaviour and attempt to resolve it.

anyone interested in working with me can pm me, and hopefully we can move towards resolving the issue for all.

For those who have found switching to a different video card ahs helped…. well…… i think that makes the issue pretty much obvious – the video card is unstable, or something is making the driver misbehave (like system settings)

an issue with a PC encompasses its configuration, its physical state, and any application running on it which may intefere with the application running correctly.

So many of us are NOT having the issue that your continued disregard for causality is both illogical and completely negates any argument you attempt to make.

I am just not that quick to blame the PC or PC user. I do not believe in tweaking my PC into the ground just to make ‘one’ game work on my system. It’s just silly to even think that way.

Of course we know plenty of others don’t have this problem, so it’s something related to either your PC, your install, or how the GW2 is misbehaving on your PC.

People talk of doing a repair, etc., but has anyone actually completely uninstalled/wiped the GW2 client from their PC and installed a clean copy?

Also crashing doesn’t equal corrupted files. The two can be related, but there are exponentially more reasons for crashes than just corrupted files. In my opinion the GW2 client isn’t very stable, and even under near-perfect conditions it still takes a nose dive on me once a month or so, especially after new patches and world-wide events like Lost Shore.

The OP listed off the exact error, and it could absolutely be due to corrupted files. Since GW2 is just one big file that contains many others files, it’s not easy to troubleshoot this from a user’s perspective. But other factors could be causing models/textures not to load. I think the client just spits out the corrupted file error message when it can’t load things. So I’d also do troubleshooting within the client’s settings, with your drivers, Windows, and your hardware if a clean install doesn’t help.

Celery and Zilent Night,

Your Crash logs are showing CRC errors, what this means is that something has caused a file to be the wrong size and corrupted the installation. The first thing we want to rule out are issues on your drive.

Please do the following first to check and repair your drive:

1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.

2. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.

3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

4. To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

5. Click Start.

Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don’t use your computer for any other tasks while it’s checking for errors.

Once that is complete, Please navigate to your Documents > Guild Wars 2 folder and in there you should see a file called Local.dat. Delete this file.

Next:

1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 installation folder.

2. Right-click on “GW2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”

3. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Repair.”

4. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”

5. Edit the “Target” line to include -repair at the end.

Note: Please make sure -repair is outside of the quotes

Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” -repair
Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe -repair”

6. Once completed, click “Ok” to save your changes.

If you get an error trying to save, your target line may not have the correct format. Please try step 5 again.

7. Double click “Guild Wars 2 Repair” to start the repair process.

Once completed, please try starting Guild Wars 2 again and see if this resolves your issue.

No luck im afraid… went through the list, it found no errors. Regardless if i try to start the client normally or with the “-repair” addon it just refuses to repair, then crashes, and asks me to send in yet another report…
Its not an Nvidia thing btw as some mentioned above, im using an HD7850…

edit: im aware your post was a response to someone else, but since i have the same issue…

I’ve also been having the same issue. Random and very frequent crashes to desktop since the holiday patch. Always the same error with this at the top:

Assertion: A file was corrupted in the archive. Please run once with ‘-repair’!
File: ..\..\..\Game\Main\MainCli.cpp(591)
App: Gw2.exe

It always forces me to run repair twice in a row before allowing me to play the game, and even after that I never get to play more than a few minutes before it crashes again.

I finally broke down and decided to try a complete re-install of the game because it’s gotten so bad it isn’t worth even trying to log in the way things are now.

Re-installed game, played for about 30 mins and crashes started again.

One other note. This problem is definitely GW2 specific. I’ve been running Tera and WoW all day long for two days now with no crashes or any problems at all. There’s nothing wrong with my PC. Someone please address this issue and stop with the “run repair again” answers. It’s old already, and isn’t fixing the real problem that’s causing the file corruption in the first place.

Been spending some time on google (lots of time in the evenings atm since the only game i play atm is/was supposed to be GW2 :p)
Apparently this is an issue alot of people had even as far back as launch (and even beta in some cases), and the common things seem to be that;

Everyone tried CHKDSK and got no errors, they also tried memtest, reinstalls, new gfxdrivers, total reinstall of gfxdrivers etc. to the list.
Basically: you name it, people tried it (with no errors showing on their end) to no avail.

Also what seems to be a common thing is that the problem “solves it self” after a while, without people actually doing anything actively, it suddenly works just fine a week/few days later (often involving a patch from Anet). In several cases though it seems the problem comes back a while later on its own.
I.e. the problem “switches on/off in circles”without people changing a thing about their setups.

Now i dont know much about programming, barely anything infact, ill be the first to admit that, but going by the above i say it (at least) seems unlikely that this should be consumer side only? by applying normal human logics?…
Also while some of the links im gonna post as reference are quite old, the problem is so 100% spot on the same that it makes sense to compare imo.

Been playing games since 92’ where i built my first computer, and i have at least never seen anything similar to this. Ive seen major clusterfluffers before (often with my own tinkering being at fault, back when OS wasnt as stable as today :p) but OS screwing up or me screwing up has always effected several/most/all games i played, not just a single game?

Some links when you google around a bit just for the “memory cant be read” crash report, havent tried the other ones, since this is mainly to illustrate that this is hardly a new problem…

Could you give us a run-down of your PC, such as Windows version and 32 or 64-bit, drive(s) you’re using, and a DXDiag report file? It might be GW2 specific to your PC as thousands of others play without any issue and without getting this message. Also, for clean installs, did you download the client or are you installing it from a DVD?

Saying “nothing wrong” with your PC or “you name it, people tried it” doesn’t help troubleshoot the issue. That’s just trying to put the burden of the issue of your install on Arenanet instead of troubleshooting it on your end. It could be your PC or how the GW2 client is misbehaving with your specific configuration. But one thing is for sure: plenty of people don’t have this problem. So what we need to do is troubleshoot why it doesn’t work for you guys and gals instead of prematurely laying blame around.

Cipher, I’ll post the report here. But what you’re arguing against, is the fact that I can play other games with absolutely no problem. If there’s something wrong with my hard disk, or memory that’s causing files to become corrupted, why isn’t it happening in those other games? It only happens in GW2. And it’s a persistent problem with GW2. Repairs only fix the file/files temporarily, they eventually, often after only a very short time, become corrupted yet again. This only happens in GW2. So do you understand why we’re saying it’s a problem within GW2? It may be true that our system configuration, hardware, and drivers are what’s causing the issue within GW2, but it’s still ONLY happening in GW2. So where is the problem?

Anyway, for cooperation’s sake, because I really do love this game and would like to see it fixed, I’m including that dxdiag report in case someone who knows what it all means and can do something about it, actually reads these forums.

I forgot to add, my install is the electronic version downloaded from the link provided in our account info section on the GW2 site. So it’s what Anet provides us as the game client. I’m not trying to install some pirate copy a buddy put on CD. LOL

Can only agree with the above. Hardly looking to annoy anyone, just want to get the game running again.
And yes ofc it can be some sort of compability problem, but the 60+ (no, not kidding, i get seriously stubborn when testing stuff like this) games i tried ranging from DII to crysis, WOW, Skyrim, DIII and alot of other online/single player offline games, mostly stuff released the last 1-2 years for it to make sense, all work perfectly.
Also digital (deluxe) DL here.
Btw

Regarding setup:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
MoBo: Asus Sabertooth X79
Memory: 16384MB RAM (Corsair)
Pagefile: 3216MB used/29502MB Free
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
PSU: Corsair AX1200 gold
GFX: Gigabyte HD7850 1753MB
GFX-Driver Catalyst 13.1
Drives: 128GB SSD for OS, 600GB raptor for games (incl GW2)

DxDiag as attachment, the part of it i can understand basically says no problems found.
I also did memtest, CHKDSK and a couple of others, all reporting a “clean bill of health”, and also tested a couple of different drivers for the GFX. Windows update reports zero upgrades to be found.

Ok now my installation seems to be working again…
Got sick of not being able to even open client without it crashing, so i basically made a backup of the 15GB .dat file hoping that i wouldnt be forced to download that once more… then manually deleted every single file that has anything to do with GW2 off my drives.
Actually had no choice since the “proper” uninstall option via controlpanel crashed on me as well.
So after doing that, then doing setup again, until client started DL, then closing client and copying the dat file into the GW2 dir, then restarting client with the -repair shortcut it decided to work much to my amazement.

I have absolutely no clue if there was something i did that caused all this, if it was some sort of conflict or corrupt files because of something else, or something about the code or the repair failing from Anets side. A guess might be that its probably several of those…?

Regardless its pretty obvious what i had was not worth trying to salvage. Not sure if there is some way to do this more smoothly (i did do a “normal” uninstall/reinstall, but that solved nothing, go figure..), but at least i guess this is worth testing for others that tried all the ways youre supposed to actually do this.

Gl on it, will update regardless if it fails horribly on me again, or runs smooth now.

/regards

I had tried all the steps mentioned about but in the end i did a system restore to a previous date, picked a date prior to downloading the last patch.

After doing that, the game downloaded the new patch and its worked flawlessly so i recommend if someone has this headache, just do a system restore.

It took about 10 mins for the whole fix.

So the solution appears to be either:

a) Removing the corrupt files, whichever those may be, from your system
or
b) Removing the application causing the issue, which could be done with a Restore Point.

Shocking that what we’ve been saying all along has resolved the problem.

Funny how a complete wipe of the client solves it for people. And how so many complained so hard how it was all GW2’s fault.

ok so what it seems to be is a corrupted file within the game and even if you try and repair it that doesn’t work. The only option is to rollback to before the dat file became corrupted.

Sounds like Anet repair system is garbage but luckily there is a work around. Have yet to test if this actually works but will post back my findings later.

edit, I’m glad that worked for some. But I removed my entire Gw2.dat file and replaced it with one from last year before all this crashing started happening. Still broken.

This is frustrating as its happening more and more often. Doesn’t seem to crash unless I’m on my mesmer for some unknown reason.

I was getting lots of corruption errors a few weeks back, I had ran memtest so many times that I lost count. I ran other diagnostic tests on hardware like my graphics card and hard disk drive (I even upgraded to an SSD). However the problem still remained even after every test would result in a pass.

Even after reinstalling GW2 (new copy of files) onto a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new SSD, I was still having corrupted files. I new the problem had to be hardware related since a full reinstall of all software and drivers did not fix the problem.

Eventually I decided to begin removing PC components one-by-one in order to determine if it really was a hardware fault. I started with my sound card as some of the errors I was receiving seem to link back to a file/module authored by “creative sounds”.

After removing the sound card I was still getting corrupted files. At this point I decided to try removing all my memory (RAM) from the pc and trying one stick at a time. The first stick I chose worked fine and windows booted up with 2GB of memory I was able to play for a good few hours without any problems. This seemed to point to an issue with my memory and GW2. I tried another stick and sure enough on a seperate 2GB stick the game was crashing and producing corrupted files.

So I discovered that my problem was hardware related and was able to fix the issue completely by replacing the fault memory stick. However I am still confused as to why numerous tests of my memory using memtest86 did not produce any faults but GW2 was able to have problems almost instantly with the faulty memory stick.

I hope this helps some of the people with this problem.
