Crash/Black Screen Issue (NVIDIA)
Have you tried limiting your frame rate to 60? Also try copying from your laptop the GW2 folder and run it to your desktop.
Hope this helps.
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
Yes and yes, but thanks for trying.
Try going to your Documents→Guild Wars2 Folder, there should be ArenaNet.txt there? open it and check the crash log. Also can you rename the Local.dat to Local-Backup.dat. Are you running any other programs?
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
I have the same problem. In the Arena.net.txt there is this error,

The game doesn’t generate a crash log for this particular issue – I have Ctrl-Alt-Delete and kill the process via task manager when it freezes.
@Zaron
Have you tried updating your videocard drivers? Also try to set your FPS to 60 there’s an option inside the game.
@Mencae
Have you tried renaming the local.dat? As far as I know the game should create a new fresh copy local.dat.

Will do as soon as I get home – currently at work
Also, I’m curious. Does my lower the gfx and “face the wall” trick work for anyone else?
They are the newest drivers available. GW2 will lock the PC up. CTRL ALT DELT will not always work. I sometimes have to hit the reset button, which of course could damage my machine. But that is the state of the game. I even tried the repair thing, it said all files are good! At this point I am so frustrated I am considering demanding a refund.

You shouldn’t have any problem at all with your specs. I’m thinking remove one card ? not just disabling it and try playing gw2.
@Zaron
I think it’s best to try what the others have suggested first. A friend of mine complains that he’s lagging badly until he founds out that his router is blocking ports for gw2.
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
I have tried physically removing a card, no change. Also tried using just my old GTX 460, same issue. Ironically, the game actually crashes less often with SLI left on.
That’s weird I have Q6600 8GB rams + GTX460 running beta drivers no issue so far. Hmm was wondering if the onboard HD3000 affects it can you disable it from BIOS?
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
I don’t have lagging issues at all, just crashing like everyone else that uses ATI video cards(it seems). Here is a dxdiag file. Maybe this will help find the problem.

@Alpha I tried putting my old PC back together – exactly the same as yours. It worked perfectly. Interestingly, the 460GTX does NOT work with my i7 with GW2.
@Zaron
Thanks for the dxdiag. Anyway have you tried using the latest driver ? http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx , try using 12.8 or 12.7
@Mencae
Was thinking the onboard intel might be messing up the graphics or ram problems. Since the Q6600 doesn’t have onboard graphics with the cpu. Try experimenting with disabling the HD3000 in bios or reducing ram to 8gb perhaps?

Looks like HD3000 doesn’t exist on my board. Nothing in BIOS or Device Manager either.
What motherboard do you have? z68? If it is then it’s disabled. It’s kinda weird if it affects only i7 and not the old quads. Wonder if you have the option to disable Hyperthreading as well?
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
Yep, P8Z68-V/Pro Gen3. Quick google came back with this: http://www.manualowl.com/m/Asus/P8Z68-V-PRO%2FGEN3/Manual/263046?page=82 which seems to indicate I can. BRB…
Did disabling HT fixed it?
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
Unfortunately no. I also installed EVGA Precision and tried over/underclocking, even tried running the game with fans set to 100%. None of those did anything so I’m back to low settings, 1600×900. My cards idle at around 30deg, temp in game was 49 after a min or so, which also rules out any possible overheating issue.
(edited by Mencae.5678)
Running out of options to check lol. Anyway check https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Crash-Freeze-Stuck-Fix/first#post6839
Also have you tried pairing the Q6600 + 560ti? just to isolate the problem.
Edit : I’ll also try tonight if I encounter any problems with 560ti.
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
Yes I have, probably should have mentioned that.. it worked perfectly. That PC is currently having it’s own issues though, so is not an option to play on.
So it’s with the i7 then. hmm how bout reducing the rams? 4gb 6gb 8gb? 12 gb ? if not then it’s a weird bug lol.
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
hmmm I also have this issue, screen goes completely black and only my cursor is still visible as well as sound still works, really frustrating issue considering I only use one graphics card, it isn’t a heat issue have been updating to beta drivers, no anti aliasing, all graphics set to low, have tried letting nvidia control the graphics that just made it worse lol, tried all the above stuff like Mencae
Was really hoping somebody had a definite fix for this
In case your wondering
i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M
8GB DDR3
Same issue here, only I can’t even get more than about 15-30 seconds in game. i7 920, GTX295, p6tdeluxe, 6GB ram, Win7 x64.
I’ve had this problem in other games as well, the most recent in my memory being LoL. In that case it worked by disabling multiGPU. In others it has worked to underclock the card below factory defaults. The weird thing is, I’ve only ever had it with games that are not especially demanding. For example, BF3, Skyrim and much more gfx heavy games run perfectly fine.
Probably should be noted that both the processor and gfx card have been overclocked and running 24/7 for almost 3 years now.
I have GTX 560ti 2GB.Have same problem. After 3-5 minutes playing on hightest graphics, video start stoping and game stucks. And i get message that problem is with driver. Sometimes get blue screen. I have 306.xx driver. But sometimes i can play 1 hour or more and no problems. Temperature of video card is ok.
I also have this black screen issue caused by the Nvidia display driver crash. Sometimes the screen stays black 1 or 2 seconds before coming back to the games, other times it stays black and I have to alt-tab to get a GW2 error window (“Guild Wars 2 has encountered an unrecoverable graphics driver error and must terminate.”), but this does not generate an error log.
First, here is my specs (I play on a laptop):
i7 -2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHZ
GTX 560m
6GB DDR3
Windows 7 64
GW2 is the first game in which I encountered this black screen / driver crash issue.
Like the OP, I tried various stuff with little to no effect. Multiple clean install of different drivers, anti-aliasing deactivation, full-screen windowed mode, etc.
I have also used MSI Afterburner to monitor my GPU usage and temperature and ruled out an overheating problem
Here is a list of things I noticed however:
- playing in High settings increases the frequency of the black screens (almost unplayable)
- playing in Low settings decreases the frequency of the black screens (already played up to 1 or 2 hours without any driver crash)
- vistas always trigger a driver crash, even multiple crashes resulting in the “unrecoverable error” (by the way, according to MSI Afterburner, my GPU usage drops from ~70% to ~30% during vistas, and then the driver crashes). When I say always, it’s really always. I’m lvl 80 and have not been able to see ONE vista completely without having a black screen or two, or even a crash.
- cutscenes also trigger the driver crashes most of the times, but not always
- when I play on battery mode, the issue disappears (because its the integrated graphics card which is being used and not my GTX560 I guess)
I also have this problem, posted about it during stress tests, have send dxdiag, ran your game advisor and sent a error report.
Apparently my ticket is handled by NCsoft Support, ticket number 120902-010300. No reply on it so far btw. I
Since I have this problem for almost 2 weeks now I feel it is about time it got fixed. PvP is a drama like this and the repair bills omg…
Just so you know, GW2 is the only game in which I have these issues.
*edit: I have an ATI graphics card
Same problem, I’ve been in contact with support but nothing they’ve suggested has worked yet.
I’m also getting this problem with the below specs
GTX 295
4 GB DDR2
Q6600
I have tried absoutley everything you could possibly imagine.
I have formated fully changed every single bios setting for possible testing 1 by 1 to provide an even testing enviroment, I have so far spent over 10 hours testing and it will crash generally within the first 5 seconds of playing sometimes it can last for 2-3 minutes. It was all working fine for the first 3 days of pre release but since then I’ve crashed to a black screen and lost PC responsiveness every time I start to play.
This is beyond a joke.
I’m waiting for an admin to really look into what is causing this problem instead offering stupid work around I expect a real fix and a real look into what the cause of this problem is.
This is happening to far far too many people.
Best Regards,
Robert Barton
If you could play during the pre-release period but not after I would look at firewall/antivirus/router issues. (error 7)
Blocked port issues can be difficult to troubleshoot for most people. Turning off one firewall might cause another to block it. Disabling an antivirus might not really disable it’s network components. Twiddling options in your router might not actually open up the ports you want.
It’s a bit of a nightmare really.
My point is, keep trying. It’s very likely a blocked port. Finding what’s blocking it might not be easy. There’s lots of posts about techniques and tips for this issue.
I had to underclock my nvidia GPU 20% to stop the crashes, but it certainly did stop them cold. Only game I have a problem with. I started at 5% and kept underclocking until it no longer crashed.

Hi,
Seriously, I work in a very technical IT environment as a 3rd Line engineer, I have diagnostically gone through every system process removed anti virus completely scanner changed settings by points per time tested. My system works on all other games apart from this one.
As soon as I begin to play the screen goes black. The music carries on playing but the rest of sounds stop. My PC is unable to get out of this state without a hard reboot.
I could write a list of things i’ve done the registry changes I’ve made the updates for so many farfetched things I have put through that have so little relevance towards the game it is untrue.
This really needs to reviewed as it seems more of a glitch within the code that is causing this error than anything hardware or software related on peoples machines.
Please don’t blame a blocked port for a crash / black screen – I have actually tried this removed anything and let all traffic in putting my self within my routers DMZ.
Words can’t describe the frustration I’m going through with this.
Best Regards,
Robert Barton
“I had to underclock my nvidia GPU 20% to stop the crashes, but it certainly did stop them cold. Only game I have a problem with. I started at 5% and kept underclocking until it no longer crashed.”
I did this and it has worked. but I had to do it to 40% before the crashes stopped which has a big impact on game performance.
This is a Joke to be fair.
I am also experiencing this god forsaken bug too. My GPU doesn’t run over 41 celsius on high settings, so it is not a heat issue. I’ve tried underclocking tremendously (pushing the sliders all the way to the left in MSI).
Same results.
We’ve got a lot of people trying endless solutions, with many different graphics cards and many different motherboards and processors. How is this a user end issue?

Because you’re running the same game as everyone else but not everybody has an issue? That’s my viewpoint anyway…

Thanks for all the reports guys. We’re currently looking into this issue and so the more diagnostic information we can collect from you guys the better (DxDiags, Speccy, CPU-Z reports, etc.).
Also, if you could let us know exactly when this black screen issue occurs, how often, if it’s ever gone away, and what you have done to temporarily resolve the issue would be a huge help to us as well.
I had the exact same problem after I updated my GW2 game client to the latest version (using a GTX580 SLI) and was running the 3.0.6 beta driver.
What I did to solve it was, I whent back to install 3.0.4.79 Driver. And then I edited the gw2 shortcut with -repair (“C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -repair)
Havent crashed since then.
Reports here then; it happens random, usually when there’s either a lot of players, npc’s or visual effects going on.
Sometimes the game freezes (goes black while sound still playing) and I can alt-tab in, but sometimes my entire systems crashes and I have to do a hard reset. I fear I’m blowing up my (GPU) engine with your game….

is that on charcter section and sfter selected when your loading charcter…as i have same problem…i wait for like 10/20 mins sometimes and eventually i get in…some times it does hang though…oh and yes i have to do a hard boot …tak manager will not shut gw2 down

DxDiag attached.
The black screen occurs every time I log into the game (read, actually get into the game after the loading screen).
It appears immediately, like after 1 second.
It’s 100% reproduceable.
It has never gone away as of yet.
Solutions I’ve tried so far:
I have tried the suggested solution which I found here with putting anti-aliasing to application controlled.
I have tried the -dx9 solution but it didn’t work.
I have tried repairing the game.
I have tried updating windows with SP1 and checking my DirectX version (which is DirectX 11 according to DxDiag)
I have tried running with a special Authentication shortcut.
I have tried running the game with 295 SLI and single, also without multi-GPU support.
I have tried checking the temperature (running firmly at 62 degrees even in the game so not an overheating issue).
I have dusted off my computer.
I have checked CPU temperature (also normal at 45 degrees or something).
I have downloaded new drivers for my motherboard.
I have tried running it with administrator rights.
I have tried running it with 1 CPU core.
I have tried running it with CPU priority “high”.
I have tried running it with a “-dx9single” in the shortcut.

The issues happen completely randomly and consistently to me. It’s happened since BWE1 and it’s incredibly annoying. All drivers from 296 to the latest beta drivers crash the game. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing. I could be in Honor of the Waves or Lion’s Arch trading post. Drivers will either crash or I’ll get a hard lock-up.
Temps are generally between 51c and 59c. Graphics settings don’t usually matter. The game will crash highest or lowest settings on fullscreen or windowed.
C2Q 9650, 8GB, SSD, GTX 570 Superclocked
*Note: it did seem way worse in Honor of the Waves. I could not complete this instance due to the frequency of the crashes. Approximately twice per pull I would get a hard lockup in this instance.

The black screen occurs most often during sPVP. I have yet to do WvW. I can be in a game, 1 vs 1 against a warrior for example, and it would occur. Now and then it occurs when the screen is very busy and there are lots of effects. But what I’ve noticed in the past few days is that it happens even while I’m browsing my bags or setting my traits. Most often it happens when I’m fighting one other player or traveling between capture points.
In PVE, I have noticed it occurring while I am fighting a mob or two, and also noticed it occurring when I’m just standing in one spot. That actually happened last night. I was next to an NPC, while in real life I am eating food. Suddenly, my screen goes black. I can alt-tab and exit it via task manager, I can see my mouse cursor, and I can hear the music. But I can’t do anything else.
