Crash/Black Screen Issue (NVIDIA)
After a few more days playing I have been adjusting the video settings downward one option at a a time until all the options are flipped to best performance settings. I have tested the first three and no crashes yet.
I have the same problem. I can play then the screen goes black and i alt-tab and see this “guild wars 2 has encountered an unrecoverable graphics driver error” I have played this game fine through the whole beta weekends & upon release I started getting this specific error. I believe this is not isolated at all. I have seen to many post about this exact problem on various machines. Arena Net needs to look into this problem ASAP!
System Specs Sager np8760 Laptop:
Intel i7 Q820m
Nivida GTX28m
4GB memory
Win7 64bit SP1
Steps taking to fix:
I have down graded my drivers to an older release (Started with 304.79 & down graded to 301.42)
I have dusted and cleaned
I have put all settings to low (This helps, yet just prolongs it sometimes)
I have set my GPU to max performance un the nvidia options
I have checked my GPU & CPU tempatures (GPU = 70c & CPU = 50c)
I have reformatted and installed just the basics for my laptop to run (drivers and fresh install of Guild Wars 2)
I have taken apart my Laptop to get to the GPU & CPU. (I reapplied Arctic Silver 5 Thermal paste on both, plus cleaned any and all dust around the heat sink and fans.)
I have checked new temps(after letting Arctic Silver 5 set in) GPU = 65c & CPU = 47c
I have installed a fresh set of the newest drivers (306.97)
With all of this the problem reproduces itself when it pleases. I find that it happens more around water and within the WvW servers (not necessarily around large groups but at anytime). I hope that Arena Net can take a look into this problem ASAP and find out what the deal is and fix it for the whole community. Thank you
Happened to me yesterday and still randomly crashing from time to time.
My pc spec:
Window 7 64bit SP1
4gb ram
Intel C2D 2.6 ghz
Nvidia 8800GT (driver version 306.97 (latest) )
Has a fix been reported yet? I’m having the same issues on my newly build pc.
Specs:
Windows 7 64bit Professional
7GB ram
AMD Phenom™ 9950 Quad-core processor – 2.60 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series (latest drivers installed)
Top 100 Solo Q for a full minute
I have the problem with crash to black screen. It happened 4 times in an hour. I want to mention it did’t happen before the wintersday update. I have a AMD HD6670 vide card, 4gb ram. All the settings ingame are at low. If any information is required for the fix of this issue I am willing to provide it.
Sound stays on, cusor as well Alt+F4 or Ctrl+Alt+Del work just fine. I reduced the refresh rate to 60. Still not working.

welcome to the club, which is bigger and bigger every day:D
same for me random crashes, the game is great. The last time i felt this excited about a game was when WoW was released. But i can’t even enjoy it because it crashes everytime if it wasn’t random i could atleast predict when it would happen and plan my playing accordingly but random crashing ruins every event since you never know when it happens.
Same here. I noticed it has been more frequent since I upgraded from GTX460 to GTX660Ti. Had black screen maybe once a month, now its few times a day.

Gaile, I myself have tried adjusting settings many of times. The above suggestion did nothing at all. All I can do is type in my account info and hit the play button now, then it just goes to a crash and send an error report.
Have the same problem after the wintersday update. Before the update I didn’t have any problems at all. Now I got black screen every time I try to play the game
try to use MSI afterburner v2.3.0 I had exactly same issues blackscreen of death and sound loop in background everytime I had to reboot pc you have to UNDERCLOCK your GPU it helped me no crashes now.
I’m getting this every 10m. Just curious how often it happens with everyone else?
I’m getting it every 1-10 minutes sometimes even less. And I have tried everything :P
try to run with the settings i posted
Didn’t work for me
Fix doesn’t work for me (as it is already set that way).
Getting the same issue, crashing during loading or on start up. It completely locks my system up and I’m afraid of damaging my laptop.
I’ve tried the newest drivers and roll backed etc.
Tried every possible solution.. GW2 just refuses to stop crashing on WvWvW… I’ve sent so many reports to Anet it must look like a hacking attempt by now. My GFX are set to the lowest possible setting. But no matter what, my WvWvW session would crash in 15-30 mins tops.. This has been happening for the past 3 months for me. I REALLY hope a fix is rolled out soon, because WvWvW is becoming so hard to enjoy, especially when I keep expecting the dreaded crash to happen in the middle of a siege..!!!

- List exactly what you have done to troubleshoot
- List your complete system spec with driver versions
- Provide error codes or logs if possible.
That being said, are you using 32bit OS and getting out_of_memory errors?

I have a ticket on this open too, and so far nothing has resolved it. I really hope it gets resolved soon though, but I have my doubts .. the issue doesn’t just effect GW2 especially when you read official feedback threads like this .. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/524985/geforce-drivers/official-nvidia-r310-70-whql-candidate-display-driver-feedback-thread-released-12-4-12-/

12gb Ram
i7
Specs:
Windows 7 32-bit
4 gb ram
GTX 560 (310.70 drivers)
i7 930 2.8 ghz
What I’ve tried:
Running the game on lowest gfx settings
Running the game in Windowed mode
Clean install of Nvidia drivers and resetting 3d settings
Verifying GW2 file archive
Increasing page file size
Decreasing sound quality (<some have claimed this temporarily worked for them or helped increase their play-time, tried it, didn’t work)
Quitting applications before launching GW2 (which didn’t help, because once the game reaches 1.33 GB in memory usage, it will crash. My system would also be using only 70-72 percent of total RAM when it happens)
It is worth noting that the memory crash did not occur during the Krait invasion event, which also had hundreds of players. My game crashed during the event due to severe lag spikes and not being able to connect to the server. Issue seems to occur most often during WvWvW, and when it does happen on rare occasions on PvE, its when I zone.

The setting are allready set like that and it still crashes from time to time. It seems that crashes have decresed in frequency in the last week.

your log shows “out of memory” crashes. Common problem on 32bit OS as it is a limitation of the architecture. Besides waiting Anet to tune their code to work with in the 32bit bounds, there are two workarounds you can do.
- Upgrade to 64bit OS
- Try using /3 GB switch. Which has it’s own downsides.

Hey Kirito, thanks for the reply.
Not gonna upgrade to 64-bit because I’ve seen posts in which users stated that they’ve made the upgrade and STILL suffered from crashes, even with 8 GB RAM.. I will test the /3 GB switch and report back my results. Thanks!!!
I’ve played since release and never had this problem before now. When I went to visit my parents for the holidays. I’m now stuck on Wifi through a router. I get the black screen instantly after loading screen (which takes way longer than usual) and can only get out with a hard reboot. I’ve tried portforwarding the gw2 ports with the www.portforward.com guide, but it did nothing.
It is interesting though; it seems it’s got something to do with the network. Which to me makes no sense at all. Never had this issue on the same computer with the same speccs before this.
However, my brother still lives with my parents and have been playing guild wars here without problems :-/ HALP!
I’d like to try and disable SPI, but my router won’t let me. It’s an Inteno fg101r2 if anyone’s got the knowhow.

I’ve got the same problem. I went back home for the holidays like 3 or 4 days ago and since then I’ve started getting black screen at least 1 or 2 times a day. This never happened before and I have no idea what may be causing it..
Hi Myros,
Any result on trying the 3g stuff.? Mine, i already tried, and still keep crashing.. -.-

I notice that even you change your OS into 64 bit or lowering the settings, you still keep getting the out of memory crash or freezing or black screen. I also notice that it happened after the patch on Wintersday. Right now im reinstalling the game but im not planning to change into 64 bit because some people here are having problem also in 64 bit OS.
Any updates from Anet ?
I can only play IF and ONLY IF i downclock my GPU by 25-30 MHz.
Else i’ll suffer restarts and freezes.
Anet, i know this is the Holiday Season for you guys, but please do something about this. I have faith in you guys

I see that as a hardware issue if you gotta downclock to be stable

@Lightstoner and Kirito: Okay.. the 3 GB switch worked for me.. played for 6 HOURS on WvWvW yesterday, no crash. Its worth noting that I used the Best Performance settings, and midway through the game I used alt-tab to check GW2 process’s memory usage and it was 1.39 GB.
Once I decided I had enough, I decided to crank up the GFX option to auto-detect, the lag began. However, when I tuned “Audio quality” (or Audio processing, can’t remember which one exactly) from close to ‘fastest’ to the middle of the bar <between quality and fastest>, the PC stopped responding, and GW2 was on 2.3 GB of RAM, and the System widget showed that a total of 95 percent of the RAM was being used!
All in all, can’t complain about this because the solution DID work and I got 6 hours of gaming. My best time on WvWvW before this tweak was 45 minutes at BEST. However, the game has serious memory issues that need to be resolved, considering all the chaos that can occur when overtaking a tower.

Thanks for the reply. But i think it may be too much of a sweeping statement if you ask me.
This thread is filled with people with the same issues. and other threads that have sunk, with time.
In the first few posts, People changed GPU cards and still face the same issues.
For the record, i am 3 hours stable on OCCT and Prime 95 as i’ve mentioned weeks ago. Was worried that it could be hardware related but this sets my mind at ease and points it to GW2 client instead.
I’m not really complaining as i can play while down clocked. But something is odd don’t you think ?
I have done a clean install. Infact, just upgraded to Win 8 Pro 64 – only keeping personal files.
Stable run on OCCT and Prime 95. Afterburner Stress test for an hour as well without crashes.
For the record, i have even run OCCT and Prime 95 at the same time, in an attempt to crash my system. It didn’t for the full hour that i’ve let it run for.
I can attach my crash log and dxdiag if anyone needs it.
It is easy to simulate the crash. Just run the clocks back to stock @ 775/1250 and i’ll crash minutes into game.
I remember a user – Squall telling me to check my PSU. That is the only block which i’ve not tested yet though. Not easy to find a spare 150W-180W block around.

Just updating everyone, played wvwvw on medium settings, still no crash following the /3 gb fix. My card, GTX 560, peaked at 63 degrees, which is VERY low compared to games such as Dishonoured and Left 4 dead, when it peaks on 73-75, so I know its not hardware related, not that there was any doubt, of course :P Will keep checking back on this thread and I’ll update everyone if GW2 crashes again.
GFX card driver version is 310.70, in case anyone is wondering.

Now that you confirmed /3gb switch works in your case, you can safely upgrade to 64bit and buy some more ram maybe 8-16gb; they are cheap these days.

Hi Myros,
Can you post here what exactly the “medium” settings you are saying? and have you tried to change map to Lions Arch from Eternal Battlegrounds?
Hey Lightstoner,
I think if you’re crashing on low settings, you’ll still crash if you use mine.. But anyway, its worth a shot!

Hello,
I found a solution that worked for me and felt I should probably share it as it might help some of you. Just like most of the stories here I have no problems with heat as my cards usually run over 70 with most games that are graphically intense and with guild wars barely hit the 60 mark…. But I was getting black screens and hard freezes. After some discussion with my friend and trouble shooting we have found that this game suffers the same fate as others we have encountered, over-allocation of graphical resources.
What I did to fix my problem was simple. Turn on Vertical Sync.
Doing this lowered my graphic card temperatures to below 60 (Which honestly shouldn’t have made a difference), lowered the usage on BOTH cards (I am in SLI) from 80-90% to around 60 while playing GW…. and I haven’t had a black screen for quite a little while, I have played uninterrupted for 7 hours straight in full screen.
If this doesn’t work for you my second option for you would be to run the game in windowed mode, this was my first solution and when it did decide to black screen while I was in windowed mode it came back seconds later telling me NVidia display adapter has stopped responding and been restarted but it did not hard freeze my computer (This was before I tried vertical sync).
Hope this helps. Good luck.
So I have had this problem for a long time. I believe I have solved it for myself; however , the fix is not a fix I like to have, yet it works. So what I did last night was downloaded MSI Afterburner. After that I down clocked the core 100mhz. I I played for 5hours straight in WvW(where I mostly black screen) and not a single crash. I then tried only a 10% down clock. For that was only 58mhz taken from 583mhz. I played for another 4 hours straight all in WvW with huge serfs from all 3 sides and no crash. I am glad that I can play now worry free, but this is not how it should be fixed. Anet still needs to look into this and find a 100% fix with making dumb changes to nvidia options or having to down clock the GPU.

I have experienced this problem as well as a friend of mine. I came across this thread a few weeks ago and finally today i came across a BF3 thread with multiple people saying that updating their motherboard bios fixed it. I gave it a go this morning and i haven’t had the black screen yet, hope this works for others as well.
The same problem.
I with English not very good, I Have a black screen and blinking light on the monitor, as there is no signal, and the sound played as a loop. I understood correctly at all so? And only helps to reboot.
P.S. Sometimes the computer does not even boot after a restart.
Same problem here, started after the February update (seriously the day after it updated) .
BSOD when ever i try to play the game. started at once per 5 hour session. not i cannot even log on and get to character selection screen without a BSOD.
i can play other games fine with no issues, this is a problem directly related to GW2, all above suggestion and a re install of GW2 followed by a fresh windows instillation on a separate HD did nothing to help solve the problem.
Im putting in a ticket for this tonight. for me this is unacceptable to have this happen to this any players. and not even respond with a “were working on it”
EDIT: Running on AMD QuadCore AthlionII
Nvidia GTX450 Graphics card

It’s a little obnoxious.
i am also getting the same black screen issue the music players ,their is mouse pointer but screen full black and will have to restart game every time….then again i tried upgrading the bios but no use……it also crashes some times with sound loop ..the error is
