Crash/Black Screen Issue (NVIDIA)
Is everyone here going through a router? I had the exact same problems as you guys until I heard that hooking your PC straight to your modem would elminiate the BSoD… I tried it myself and now I don’t get any Black Screen crashes at all. I have an NVDIA GTX670 + i7-3770 @ 3.40Ghz + 16Gb RAM on Win7 Pro 64bit and I had the Black Screen issue all the time when using my Dlink DIR-601 router (3 PC’s including mine, and my PS3 are hooked up to it). When I took the router out of the equation and went staright through the modem, my Black Screen issue disappeared all together….
Wireless router here, but issue occurs only on 1 out of 3 pc’s (all wireless).
Are you in a college dorm? Is there a modem you could hook up your PC directly through it to see if it solves the issues?
Hey guys – I’m not entirely sure why connecting directly to the modem has resolved the issue for some players, but if you’re still getting the black screen issue I am curious if anyone could test this so I can see how many other players are able to resolve this issue in this fashion.
Appreciate the help Shino, but I think the fact the game works when I use the “face the wall” technique proves this issue is graphics related.
I had an issue with my Video cards OC tool, the Gigabyte CO utility. I spent hours and hours trying to debug, finally I found a post where someone was running EVGA Precision and said to disable it.
Lo and behold, the game started and no issues at all.
The MSI Afterburner seems to work I heard from someone at Arena.net

There’s 2 people now who’ve done it and fixed their issue lol. What is this?!
As I suggested in the other thread shinoba made regarding the router thing. Perhaps there’s something in GW2 that is streaming data to the client or a sync that occurs before or during a scene being rendered, that if it is interrupted the scene fails and the game crashes?

Connecting directly to the modem fixed my black screen issue. No freakin clue why.
As an AT&T Uverse subscriber my modem has a router built into it so this solution isn’t feasibly implemented. I hope Anet continues looking into this problem.
It appears that the LGA switch is already enabled for GW2 while on Win7 64bit.

As far as I know, there are at least 2 different “black screen” issues.
One where the user can still open menu by clicking F11 – this one seems to be fixed by connecting directly to the modem.
A different black screen comes from the display driver crash, and seems to affect mostly, but not exclusively, Nvidia users.
i keep getting crashes also. just crashes to desktop. i was getting the nvidia black screen issue, but i updated to newest beta drivers and it seems to have stopped that part. its pretty random, from 5mins into gameplay to 3hrs of gameplay. Seems to happen more in WvWvW tho.

I play with my son, we have different vid card drivers, (NVIDIA and RADEON) we have both updated drivers to the recommended versions.
The black screen is totally random, I was at a crafting station (went to make a cup of tea) black screen, in pvp, pve, transitioning zones. I have 30 years in IT, I have tried pretty much all recommended (actually made up guesses, whitchcraft and wives tails) remedies. Non work. The black screen can happen after 10 minutes or an hour. By gamers law it always happens just before you finish/complete/kill X.
I would strongly recommend players to NOT remove hardware, play in BIOS etc. The problem is to widespread for it to be your fault, it is more likely a graphic glitch.
As an aside, I have noticed F11 and F12 still bring up their menu’s. So if your looking to a add a diagnostic tool, add it to one of those screens, players can click and auto-submit.
Overall, the game is very good fun, me n the lad have a ball, so well done, please keep working on things like this as it does chip away at confidence.
One thing that would help would be a ‘grace’ period, where if you logout/crash and relog you stay in your instance/party/pvp for another 3 minutes or something rather than being hurled out into the wilds.

That fix is only for 32 bit – it allows Windows to use more than 3GB RAM, which should resolve some people’s Out Of Memory errors. Unfortunately this will do nothing for 64bit users.
For those who want to try this but are seeing a dead link, try the instructions here: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=9583842&linkID=9240697 or just google “enable 3GB switch Windows”
The /3GB doesn’t allow more than 3GB usage, it allows Windows to address up to 3GB of virtual memory to an application and the remaining 1GB to the kernel. As opposed to the typical split of 2GB/2GB. Has nothing to do with RAM.
Sorry, I had it confused with this (which may be worth trying for some 32bit users too) http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/11377-Force-Windows-32-bit-Support-More-Than-3-2-GB-RAM-Include-Windows-7-Vista-2003-XP

PAE will not change the virtual memory allocation though so you will still have out of memory issues. You could combine /PAE with /3GB if you wanted to. But I don’t recommend it as the 3GB switch puts a clamp on your kernel’s available virtual memory and could lead to instability.
Truly the best option is to upgrade to a 64bit OS. As I mentioned in another thread, Windows 7 32-bit users can upgrade freely to Windows 7 64-bit without needing to purchase a new copy. The CD-Key/License is fully transferable between versions, legally and at no cost. You need only obtain a copy of the install media, however you feel comfortable doing so (torrent etc.) and enter your 32-bit cd-key when prompted during a fresh installation.
I’ll try MSI Afterburner but honestly I shouldn’t have to underclock my GPU to run a game.
I am using the 12.8 Cat drivers. The latest there are.
i’m stuck in a crash loop, it’s worse today than it’s been other days. i took a waypoint on my ranger to the black citadel and then spent the next half hour crashing, rebooting, running the repair. later in the day i switched to my mesmer, took a waypoint to divinity’s reach and again instant crash. i’ve tried dropping all my settings to low and i was able to log back in, but it looks horrible. if i try to put my settings back up, crashes again.
Im going to try the beta drivers and see what happens.

it would be very nice to have a grace period after these crashes, to possibly get event loot or not lose your party members frequently.
Underclocking my GPU by 10% solved my problem. I still think we shouldn’t have too… I did lose 5-10 FPS by doing so
Have tried 296.10 and everything newer. Currently on 306.02 as I’ve been slightly more stable with them. The game was working fine with 296.10 during pre-launch beta access.
For me problem with GW2 started in monday afair. I downloaded the latest update and after ~30 seconds of gameplay the screen went black for a 1-2 secs. After ~15 seconds it happend again and is still happening, today I played few hours without blackscreen but now they are back. I checked in Administrative Tools – Event Viewer what it is, and it says: “Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.”

295.73? Have you tried playing window mode then switching back to full screen (Alt+Enter)?

im getting tired of running the repair, and it not repairing….running game of all lowest settings on….

If you’re having the computer lockup with colored screens and stuck sound, the fix for this is to downclock your graphics card by 10-20%. That will stop the crashing. (This crash has been around since closed beta and is believed to be an nVidia issue which may or may not be fixed in a future driver update. ANet has been almost completely silent on the issue.)
I submitted my second ticket for this 3 days ago and am yet to hear back. 120903-013463. Is Anyone from Arenanet able to give us an update on this issue? Can you confirm it is driver related?
note: I received an email advising me that the first one was closed. I’m assuming this was because I didn’t provide game-advisor info the first time around.
edit: @Alpha, I will try the earlier drivers when I get home from work. Have tried all graphics modes, windowed does not work at all for me – this actually causes a different crash, one which does generate a log. I’ll post this up also when I can.

Please do. Drivers I tried were 295.73, 296.10,304.xx and 306.20. I’ve skipped 301.xx causing some BSOD to others games I’ve played. Also doing clean driver installation (Custom Install → Perform Clean Installation) every driver updates.
What anti virus are you using btw? Can you do a system scan? I was wondering why window mode would bug you out as well. Can you close some running programs while playing ? Like steam? or Media Centers?
Another option would be perform a clean OS format install updates and videocard driver then run GW2 ( If you have a spare drive or spare partition).

This is pretty much my major issue. In addition to the colored screen lockups I do get driver crashes as well. Downclocking my graphics card helps a bit, but it’s quite a hassle to do. This is an incredibly annoying issue to have and severely limits my ability to play. I currently cannot do dungeons or WvW (due to the queue).
I have the same problem with graphics drivers crashing and im using Radeon. Happens as soon as i go into the game about 30 sec in. Keeps going black and recovering until it finally crashes back to the desktop saying guild wars 2 had a unrecoverable driver error.

It would be helpful if you can post your dxdiag or the diag from guildwars 2.

ok possible fix for Nvidia users. I currently am running the Asus 660TI OC edition. I underclocked my GPU Using the GPU tweak software (power saving more) and have been able to run the game non stop with out a computer crash in sight. This may be an issue with the game and OCed cards not sure. could be a Driver issue with Nvidia. Hope this helps some of u.
Tried rolling back drivers to 295.73, I was able to get into the game in 1680×1050 with everything at max except shadows which I left at high. I still crashed when I walked through a portal, which then resulted in a crash-loop. Could do a fresh install but that’s a pretty extreme measure when I’m 90% sure the problem is either a driver or graphics engine bug. I’d like to see what Anet say first.
Also, haven’t been able to cause the game to crash at the point where it will produce a log so will have to forget about that for now.

Well yeah seems there’s a glitch somewhere on the drivers. Anyway where did you disabled your Anti-Aliasing? Was it ingame or thru Nvidia Control panel?
Wonder if you can tinker with nvidia’s Control Panel AA setting? Like setting it off or Override any application to 2x settings?
Some settings to tinker :
- Anti Aliasing (Override, 2x or Off)
- Theaded Optimization (Set to On / off)
- Maximum Pre-rendered frames (could be set either 1-3)

As someone else stated with the AT&T situation, I too can’t use that fix since my ISP delivers the modem and router all in one, so I can’t bypass that in any way.
If you, mod, meant that I should indeed just connect my TP to that modem then I can say that I’ve tried it and it didn’t work.
I hope that a solution can come to this problem in a few hours since I’ll be flashing my BIOS after that (read about someone that solved it like that), although I really don’t want to flash it.
Bumping this since I just tried to flash/update my BIOS which did not work. I also tried downloading the Nvidia 295.10 drivers and installing them in safe-mode (which I was recommended doing by the nvidia support guy I’m consulting per mail in concern about this problem.
That did not work either, so I have nothing else up my sleeve. This is probably indeed a problem with the nvidia drivers OR the game itself.

Seems to be working for me after underclocking as well. GTX295, i7 920, Win7 x64.

I’ve read other people saying underclocking their GPU by 10-20% solved the driver crashing issue.
I’m playing on a laptop and cannot underclock at all (limited by default frequency) so I could not test this myself.
Anyway, I think underclocking should be at most a temporary solution, until Anet or Nvidia get things fixed.
Edit: I was able to try the underclocking method using “Nvidia inspector”, and underclocking by 10% fixed it for me as well. Now, let’s hope this helps Anet people understand where the issue come from, so we can play without downgrading our own machines

Well, after having been able to play for a solid 6 hours without a crash with underclocking, I decided to try with both GPU’s activated (I’ve been playing on only one so far). Guess what, 2 minutes in the game, and boom, crash! So it is definately a problem with multiGPU as well. But at least I can play now, even if it feels like I’m on a computer from the 80’s.
did anyone tried adding the -dx9single from the shortcut target line?
Eternal Breaker[ExB] || Sanctum of Rall
Just letting you guys know, there are a few other people I know with the same router DIR-601 that are getting black screens, it seems the fix is either to switch routers and plug into the modem. This is not definite for some people, as this seems to be happening to other routers as well but very specific routers.
Edit: This is referring to the black screen with cursor and sound issue, black screens that crash computer, cause BSoD’s and locking up the computer won’t be fixed by plugging into the modem
(edited by Hellstrom.8641)
did anyone tried adding the -dx9single from the shortcut target line?
Yeah, it didn’t work, at least not for me.
Just an update for you guys… I was getting the rnadom BSoD with my Dlink DIR-601 N150 home router in the loop… Switched it out for a stronger dual band ASUS N750 and huzzah – NO MORE BLACK SCREENS! If you are still getting black screens a PC that should play this game at high settings, the weak link might just be your router! Try plugging your PC straight through the modem… If it solves the issue, its time to upgrade your router!
Yep gonna have to say that the DIR-601 seems to be an issue for those that own one.
Just wanted to add my name to the list of people experiencing the loss of signal / black screen error which requires a hard reboot. This happens almost instantly when I log into the world (past the character creator and load screen) and happens every single time.
The screen then goes completely black, with the monitor going into power saving mode, but I’m still able to hear the music playing through my speakers. The only way out of this is to hold down the power button on the PC, as ALT+TAB has no effect, not does CTRL, ALT + Delete.
The link to my ‘speccy’ results is – http://speccy.piriform.com/results/DxvZ7Zj4aaMNOr013O3psTQ
And I have attached my dxdiag file.
If anyone has any idea how to solve this, then I’d love to hear it. I’ve tried absolutely every suggestion I could find on the issue (-dx9single / disable multi-gpu / underclock card / -repair etc) and nothing at all seems to work.
