Some players have told us that in the last week, they’ve started having trouble with the client download, or with updates.
Here’s what we posted in another thread:
Background: FIOS has been presenting issues with GW2 for a little over a week now. After collecting a decent amount of data we feel this is going to be a DNS issue on Verizon’s side as players connections are not resolving when hitting the server while on FIOS but can usually resolve when using GoogleDNS or Host file edits.
Suggestion: We suggest that players contact FIOS for help. We have sent an e-mail to FIOS already and we have contacted Verizon but at this time we are still awaiting their responses.
A Work-Around Suggestions from our Server Team: Set your DNS provider to Google (https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using) as that fixes this problem and will continue working into the future.
Thank you for understanding and we wish we could help more directly!
I’m on Verizion FIOS and having this issue, but using Google’s DNS servers did not solve the issue (I was already using them when I noticed the problem). The host file edits and using a VPN service both did fix it, though both are also pretty far from ideal solutions.
Hope this gets worked out soon. In the mean time… I intend to switch to another ISP this month, and will cite this issue as one of the (many) reasons.
Edit C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts using notepad (run as administrator)
Add this line at the bottom:
174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.comSave the file. If Notepad prompts you to save as a new file, you need to start over and run Notepad as administrator.
If you have the GW2 launcher already open, restart it. If this still doesn’t help, you may need to change the address above and try a different number (e.g. assetcdn.102.etc..).
You may want to remove this line later when (if?) they resolve the networking issue.
Good luck!
This was posted by Kilam and it fixed the issue.
I have Verizon FIOS but I do not think that I’m having a DNS issue. The download starts, then slows down, and then stops. If I try again it stops at a different point but still slows down to downloading 0 bytes/sec.

same goes for me. I’ve tried many of the fixes people suggest but they don’t work.

Ugh. The same thing is happening to me as well. I am also on vz fios. I did the DNS thing, and nope… It is still occurring. I suppose I can probably contact one of my friends, since I am an ex verizon employee and I still have some connections there. As for tonight, guess I am not livestreaming… sigh.

Hey there. Where, how did you do that please?
Host File editing was the only solution for me here. What I don’t understand is, the game ran perfectly fine for a year or more, the previous patch, fine, the previous patch to that patch? Fine. Today though no, just utterly stops, maybe got 2 or 3 files before no connection ever. I figured, ‘alright I’ll wait a while let the servers get a chance to let me in, let others download first’. Still nothing a few hours after though and then there’s this whole mess off an issue. What suddenly has changed? It doesn’t make any sense. As someone else pointed out, its not like thousands of people suddenly edited something about their computers, the only change has been these latest patches and a sudden inability to connect to download.
Another FiOS user here – the hosts file patch worked for me as well. Download completed and playing game.
This worked for me:
Find your hosts file here: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts
Copy/paste the hosts file to your desktop.
Rename the file so it becomes “hosts.txt”
Now open the file with notepad. (you need to run as admin if you have that option)
Add this line at the bottom:
174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com
Save the file.
Now rename the file again to delete the .txt so it has no file extension anymore and is just “hosts” again.
Now go replace your old hosts file with this new edited one on your desktop.
If you have the GW2 launcher already open, restart it.
This was someone else’s fix, but it worked for me when the Google DNS thing didn’t!
does this have to do with net neutrality ? is this like the first stages of the internet providers being aholes?
i have not been able to download for many days now

that worked!
This is not working for me. worked for me yesterday, not today. been trying to get the new patch all night.
Im sorry im not too smart with all this host and other jargon. Is there a guide for dummies like myself explaining it step by step on how to solve this? Also, I have windows 8 : (.
Hello everyone
This works very easily
1: Download a program called Spotflux, run the program
2: Run the game
3: When all the files are downloaded, you will notice you wont be able to log in. Disable Spotflux or delete the program altogether
Just reposting this from another post I saw here

I guess Im Totally Screwed. :S i uninstalled the game i thought it was just me till i see this post. I’ve been tryin to redownload the game followed everyone’s suggestion but for some reason when i download the game it stops around 1600+ KB when it reached that point the download speed just dropped to 0KB/sec and it wont restart back up. Spotflux, i’m not so sure. it looks legit but also sacred to download might be a malware or something. anymore suggestion please feel free.. thank you
I attempted the Google DNS and everything worked fine until right aroudn the 4000kb and it just did the same thing and slowed down and stalled at 0kb / sec

Im playing the game only because of Spotflux. I virus scanned it before downloading. Its safe and works
Ok guys I do NOT recommend doing a redirect in your hosts file or using software.
THE BEST FIX IS WHAT ANET HAS RECOMMENDED: CHANGE YOUR DNS SETTINGS
Why? Because using a better DNS is actually better for your internet connection in general (could actually speed up your connection), and there’s no need to ever switch back.
I have found that Google’s DNS servers did not work for me, so I used Level3’s DNS servers, they work flawless.
Here’s how (for Windows 7 users):
The following steps may vary a little depending on your router model, I’m using the one from Verizon:
If all goes well, you should now be able to start up GW2 like normal.
You may have to reboot your router and/or your PC for everything to reset itself. My wireless USB adapter went to “disabled” status and i had to unplug it and plug it back in but once I did, everything was back to full speed.
I am using Verizon DSL (as FIOS is unavailable in my apartment complex and Comcast is prohibitively expensive here) and setting up a VPN fixed it, though it was fairly slow. But at least it actually allowed me to patch. I can play fine without doing it, but gotta use the VPN patch.
I think what we can all agree to here is that the fact that this is an issue at all is stupid and verizon needs to sort their kitten out.

DUUUUUUDE!!!
You Get like +1000 internet cookies and a +2 kitten level!!!
I’ve been struggling with my FiOS for DAYS, only able to patch the game in the middle of the night!! And from the time I read this comment, to getting SpotFlux and GW 2 patched took like 30-45 seconds.
/applaud!
I am on FIOS had the problem, did the host file, it’s downloading now at about 1 mb a sec much, much faster ! Thanks to whomever figured that one out.
man i just traded a ton of gems for gold, my only day off, logged off to patch, and now this. and a ton of people were on too, lag everywhere, but it’s my isp? wow
and its happening again -.-
The only times I can get on during the weekdays is between 7pm and 10pm EST, right in the middle of the stoppage. This is getting frustrating. I don’t want to get up 2 hours early just to get my dailies done.

Work for me yesterday not today.
It’s not the ISP it’s ANet because it happens at the same time everyday not to just Verizon but others also. Could it possibly be that the game server can’t handle the amount of people trying to get on/ amount of data trying to be transferred?
Tried swapping DNS but it did not work, hopefully this is resolved soon.
Having this problem again also, last night and tonight (FIOS customer). Has never happened before and I have been playing since beta.
Download just stalls. I have tried the DNS switch, did not help one bit. Also spent well over an hour on the phone yesterday with Verizon/FIOS regarding the problem and have an open ticket with them. Can you give us any update on their response?
I was just online with Verizon chat support. It’s an issue on ANET’s end. Think about it, why am I able to play other games but not guild wars 2? I think it’s an issue with the latest expansion and the recent release in China. The servers might be overloaded and not responding to the DNS servers quickly enough. This needs to be remedied quickly.

EXACTLY! I have no other issues with ANY other games. Arenanet, you are dropping the ball here.
My question now besides when will the problem be fixed is will we get reimbursed in the game itself? As in, will get a few more days for the WvW Spring Tournament that ends on the 31st for the 3 days so far lost to gain the achievements and the new patch itself with the Festival of the 4 Winds.

I agree that this should be done. My guild is hardcore WvW and is fighting very hard to get Devona’s Rest score up there. I don’t feel that it is fair for any server to lose their player base due to a failing launcher and still be expected to compete normally when things are already as close as they are. A few extra days is all I ask for; maybe reset should be on Sunday night instead of Friday.

I absolutely agree this is an Arenanet issue, not ours to fix with different host fixes. We paid for this game and Arenanet is responsible for providing excellent service. This I’m afraid is not even good customer service. Making excuses and blaming Verizon. I’m getting more than frustrated at not being able to enjoy something I not only paid for but truly do enjoy as well. And especially during this critical WvW time.

Don’t forget though that it is only affecting verizon fios customers. Has to be problems on both ends.

Gaile it’s not FIOS, I was playing earlier just fine today and when the new game build came up it hosed the game. I can’t get past 100kb of data before the download stalls. I can download updates from other games with out any problems what so ever. It is on ANET’s end.. FIOS isn’t going to answer your emails..

I do agree, but i have seen on the forums here it is others but yes mostly FIOS. The solution is, in my opinion, to stop the blame game all around and just find a more compatible solution so that everyone who has paid for and really enjoys the game, can continue to do so.

Um.. My host file stayed as a txt file, even when I renamed it again. o_o …Is that bad?
Edit: But that Spotflux worked perfectly!

That does work for me dude, once you open it with notepad it changes to a txt file and you can’t delete/rename .txt extension
this happens around the same time every night. If it was DSN It would be all day long.

Enable file extensions in Windows Explorer….
I literally just spent 2 hours trying to fix this problem and all I had to do was download spotflux…wow
But it’s not just FiOS customers because Comcast customers are having the same problems. It’s on ArenaNet not the internet service provider you have. ArenaNet is trying to put the blame on Verizon. People have gotten in contact with Verizon and were told that Verizon is letting everything pass through on their side. It has to be a problem with the GW2 servers itself. Most likely not able to hold the amount of data going through at the time of day the problem seems to occur(starting around 6 pm EST). If this is the problem they need to upgrade the server to make it able to hold more data for everyone or the problem will continue to persist.
Any update on this would be nice.
Im still having this problem and havent been able to play the game for going on three days now.
Yes I know there is a work-around but that doesnt really get to the problem and fix it.
Was on the phone with Verizon for over an hour last night, got all the way up the foodchain to a tech support supervisor. He was very helpful. We pinged the Anet server IP and got a good report. He asked me to then ping the web address the client uses to connect to Anet servers to see if the verizon DNS servers resolve the web address correctly. I could not do that because I dont know what web address the client uses. He told me to try to find out what web address the client uses. If I cant ping that successfully through verizon DNS servers then we know there is an issue with their DNS server… in which case he told me he could get an engineer to fix their DNS tables.
So Anet… have you found something wrong on your end? If not, please provide the info asked for above so I can keep working with Verizon.
Thanks!
I don’t believe the FIO/DNS story. The fact is I can make the connection and begin the download, therefore the DNS is resolving. The download just slows to a halt.
So I have to repeat my post from yesterday. ANET fix your download servers.
