When im playing GW2, the game freezes, the sound starts to stutter and then my PC freezes. Nothing works after this, not even Ctrl+Alt+Del.

This happens even when i run the game on Best Performance (lowest graphics).

I dont know if there is some kind of error code, since the only thing i can do after the crash is restart the PC. And there is no Arenanet.log file in the GW2 folder.

This is my PC:

I haven`t tried that. I`ll do that and tell you afterwards.

Yes it is. I wouldn`t need Steam if i downloaded cracked games

I use PowerISO for burning.

Update:

It still crashes. And when it does, the sound starts to go strange … is stutters and then it goes completly wrong. I dont know how to explain it.

Do you have the same problem with all your other games or just GW2?
Same question as mokaiba are all your drivers updated?
I was going to ask if the game also crashes after you killed all unecessary processes but I see that you already tried that. Your CPU isn’t overclocked so that’s not the source of the problem.
You could check your RAM (memtest). You could also check your hard-drive. It’s just an idea but the game might be installed on bad sectors, which would make it crash.
You could reinstall the whole game, maybe something went wrong during the installation and you have corrupted files.
That’s all I can think of at the moment, sorry.

I updated the drivers today actually.

And other games run very smoothly on pretty high settings. On a good day i can run Skyrim and SWTOR on max. Its weird that i have to kill some processes.

I will check the ram, re-download and reinstall the game, and then i`ll come back to say if it worked.

Thanks for the help guys.

If your other games are running fine it’s not a RAM problem, if it was they would crash as well. Since your drivers are updated I guess the only thing you can do is indeed reinstalling the game.

rushing to conclusions, DRAM (or the IMC) can never be fully ruled out.

a weak transistor might pass memtest write/read tests but fail under heavy access.

I re-installed the game, but it still crashes. There was no improvement at all.

I tried playing Assassins Creed Revelations now (the most demanding game i have on my PC at the moment) and it worked perfectly. Even on max settings.

I`m starting to think that this problem is not caused by my machine, since every other game works perfectly.

I was having the same problem on Sunday. Every 45 min to an hour my rig would lock up. I can’t ctrl+alt+delete, only the mouse responds. Left the game running on log in screen, still locked up. Did something else for a few hours and computer ran perfectly. Played last night and had no other issues, Rig was on all night, never locked up. I definitely think it’s game related.

I played the game again and kept an eye on the Processor and Memory usage using my Logitech G13, which i use to play the game. Whenever the game freezes and the screen goes black, there is a sudden decrease in the cpu usage and the memory usage stay the same. And the processor usage is always between 30% and 40%, and the memory usage is between 20% and 30%. Neither go above the numbers i said at anytime, even when the system is about to crash.

The G13 is not the problem, since i tried to play the game without it being connected to the pc, and it still crashed like usual.

I was looking at my GW2 folder, is it normal that it looks like this:

I have a similar problem with my ASUS GTX570. After spending the weekend trying various tests and benchmarks, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a combination of the GW2 + the Nvidia drivers..

I am currently in the process of rolling back the drivers (clean install each time), to try and find the most stable. I am currently on 304.79 but had a crash/freeze this morning. Next I am going to try a pre 300 driver (probably 296.10). I know the 300 drivers are suppose to bring better performance for GW2 but I’d rather have a stable machine and low fps. than it crashing randomly.

I also think the “brand” of card (i.e ASUS, gefroce etc) is a factor. I suspect each brand might be “stressing” the internal components (memory clocking etc) slightly differently. This could also explain why some posters say they have no problems with Nvidia while others are crashing randomly.

I should point out that having spent the weekend testing, I am certain its not my PC. It only happens when I play GW2. I can have nothing else running except GW2 and then it randomly freezes and I don’t even get a BSOD. On the few occasions I have had BSOD, the dump files have pointed towards the drivers.

Since your running a Geforce card not a ASUS, you might find rollback (clean install) your drivers to a previous 300 version is more stable? Personally I am not have much luck with them though. Other posters might be able to tell you a combination that works?

I had the exact same problem with my brand new PC, I’ve updated everything (drivers, bios) run all test on my hardware everything’s fine, I have a GTX 660, i5 2500K, 16Gb memory…

I have change some setting in the game, and finaly solved my problem by reducing the sound quality, I dont know is its a coincidence but since I’ve reduce sound quality to the lowest setting I’ve never crashed again…

If you still have the issue OP. Download Prime95 and run a custom blend test (just change the memory used to 14gb) Since you have 16gb you want to stress it but leave enough for idle windows processes.

leave this running for a minimm of 12 hours to ‘FULLY’ test your system. This will let you know if you have a issue with your CPU or RAM. (mainly cpu).

Now obviosly your not expected to sit infront of your computer for 12 hours ..so just make sure that whilst this is running (say after 20 mins or so ) that your temperatures are not to high. If your temps are fine after 20-30 mins then its highly unlikely you will have anything to worry about. ( Prime95 will max your processor out ..hence the temperatures)

if Prime95 comes across an error, the thread that error occured on will shut down and the other threads will continue. In your case you have 4 cores 8 threads.
If there is an arror its likely due to having to low a voltage going to your CPU and this ‘could’ be causing your lockups.

if there is no error, then atleast you have completly rulled out a CPU problem

So now i will keep Prime95 running through the night, and if in the morning nothing is wrong, i`ll try to rollback the drivers to an older version.

I`ll post as soon as i can.

Thanks for the help everyone.

It’s not your hardware. It’s this game. I have this problem too but ONLY with GW2. I play lots of other games for extended periods of time and none of them do this. Don’t waste your time doing hardware tests. This isn’t a new problem either. I’ve never seen any official acknowledgement of it or advice so it’s pretty depressing. I can only play for about 5 minutes before it happens and I have to reboot.

I reread your posts, you’re not saying if at one point the game was running fine. I mean, has this game never worked on your computer, you’ve never been able to play more than a few minutes? Or is it recent, a few weeks ago you could play normally but since a few days it’s systematically crashing? If it’s recent can you remember what you’ve changed/installed on your computer just before the problem started?
You said you lowered sound quality but with command line arguments you can disable it totally:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments
so you could try that. Also about the new drivers installed it can happen that the previous drivers weren’t totally and cleanly desinstalled, some old files are still there and there might be a conflict with the new ones. A software like Driver Sweeper (free) could fix that.

I was never able to play it without crashing, since i bought it about 3 days ago.

I`ll try an older driver now, and if it doesn`t work i will try the “-umbra gpu command line augment” thing and if it doesn`t work, ill try disabling the audio.

It kinda sucks that i have to go through all this mess to play a game …

I`m going to update the driver again and see if it works, if it doesn’t i`m going to contact Anet for help or a refund, because even though GW2 is awesome, it`s not worth going through all this trouble.

Thanks for the help everyone, i really appreciate it.

EDIT:

I tried to run the game in windowed mode today, and this time i got to see an error message and i was able to exit the game before it crashes my PC.

The problem is from the NVIDIA driver. Does anyone know how i can fix it?

I wanted to share with people the steps I’ve taken which for the moment seem to make the crashes go away.

Background:
I have 2 machines at home capable of running gw2. Both are quite old, but both make the min requirements for the game.
On the older one (core dou 2, old radeon gpu, 2gb ram) this has never happened.
On the newer one, (quad i3, 8gb, gts 250), this has happened every time I played.

Both run win 7 sp1 64bit.

I assumed this has something to do with either the radeon vs nvidia or the quad vs the core duo.

On the newer machine I tried the following steps in this order:
1. right click the game exe file, and change compatibility to ‘win xp sp3’, as well as checking ‘disable desktop composition’. At this point, the BSOD’s stopped, but the black screen must hard reset didn’t.
2. uninstall avira antivirus and install microsoft security essentials. Now the frequency of pc freeze improved, but not solved.
3. In Nvidia control panel set the ‘use advanced 3d image settings’ to ‘single display performance’. This also improved the frequency but didn’t solve it altogather.
4. Again in Nvidia control panel, i changed the ‘antialiasing – mode’ to ‘application-controlled’.
After that, I didn’t experience the freezes again.

I’d like to thank the people who posted the suggestions for fixes:
crashfixes.com for the compatibility and antivirus suggestions: http://crashfixes.com/guild-wars-2-crash-error-lag-freeze-slow-connection-problem/

and Matt from ANet:

I hope this helps some of us who are experiencing this extremely annoying issue.

Yeah, I ended up going through the long winded support Ticket process with the 2 files they needed.

What bugs me is that they would release a poorly tested patch that messed up what had been a perfectly stable game on exactly the same hardware. Quad Core AMD Phenom, ATI Radeon, 8GB ram. Win 7 64Bit.

Up until the patch no problems, now it hard shuts down the PC which ends up messing up my desktop layout since I run fullscreen at a 1080i and my monitor is higher.

No other app on my PC does that.

This is not a realistic solution given the circumstances. Simply adjusting the frequency of the RAM (effectively overclocking in some situations) will cause more problems if voltages are not also adjusted accordingly.

No response yet to my support ticket. I had a peek at the text of one of the log files they require you to attach.

It looks like GW2 is trying to write/access a protected memory location, so windows is probably shutting the PC down to protect it. Since this problem only seems to affect certain hardware I hear cries from some ATI/Nvidia users and possibly AMD?

It seems like very bad coding without error trapping by Anet, because usually Windows justs shuts down the misbehaved program not the entire PC.

Did get a response from Anet requesting more info and to try shutting down services to see if there is a conflict. Spent an hour+ getting all that together.

Still no solution. The biggest issue for me is that it doesn’t crash immediately (so I know thereis a problem) but sometime during the game and it SHUTS down the PC so my desktop which is at a higher res than the 1080p fullscreen gets messed up.

I should also repeat that this never happened ever before the Oct15 patch.

I understand that there appears to be a problem with Nvidia drivers, but my GPU is ATI.

I will try to play around a bit with my bios, nvidia and chipset drivers though… Maybe some of my recent driver updates are fighting eachother…

I will also try to make a fresh installation of the whole operating system and drivers if that doesn’t help.

I just hope it’s not my hardware… The computer is new, and I would hate calling the support and telling them they have to bring me a new RAM
