GuildWars2 Client not downloading/updating

I just recently bought the Digital Delux Package from the Guildswars2.com website, and I was able to download the client to one of my directories H:\Games\GuildWars2.
However, everytime I start the client to install the game, it’s stuck in limbo doing some sort of client update first (i guess).
I’ve added Gw2setup.exe to my Antivirus/Maleware Exclusions (for ESET Nod32 and Malewarebytes) and even into the Windows Firewall. The client downloads about 1.x~ mb and then the connection gets dropped or something stops it.
I’ve attached an image related to the problem.
I kept the client running for about 10-20 minutes and it restarted the client update download, but eventually it gave me a <Connection Error! Retrying> message on the client.
I’ve restarted the client w/ admin rights and the same problem exists.
Is this a server side issue?

I have come to the unfortunate knowledge and learning that I am also experiencing this traumatic problem. It is quite a large inconvenience to purchase a game, filled with such imminent excitement and be let down with ineffable amounts of disappointment because the client is not downloading based on some circumstance that is outside my direct control.
Should a solution be proposed, please enlighten my poverty-stricken state of being for I am in need of some serious gaming sessions.

This sure is a wide reaching error. I too, am afflicted by this unfortunate happenstance. I as well as my fellow comrades above require immediate aid!

My body is stressed out, I have been trying out multiple means and methods to accrue the very ability to play this game. I think I my have a solution, albeit an inconvenient one that can only be achieved by much unnecessary and user unfriendly input….not to add to the fact that this VPN connection only permits my downloading speeds up to around 700kb/s, a mere fraction of the power house of a connection that I was blessed with (3.5 MB/s). I am not sure at this point how to proceed as it may require more electricity and time to even get this game to load – assuming it even runs on the computer that I have. I am afraid I may be a victim of an unfortunate circumstance, say a vehicular accident, by the time I am actually able to mash my fingers with my eyes glazed playing this videogame.
Please advise on how to proceed.
It’s not only the deluxe edition.. I am getting the same problem with a normal dl. This sucks

Same, issue updating the game as well on a PC that had the game installed but not updated for a while.
Same issue and to my belief after watching a review of GW2 that made me replay this game and now I can’t get into it….sad face

I haven’t played the game in months and decided to start it up today. To my dismay I’m experiencing the same issues as you and I’ve done everything I can to try and help myself only to see this thread and realize it’s probably just their servers. I spent the better part of the day attempting to resolve the issue. When are you going to fix this problem Arena Net?

To anyone still having this problem, I’ve found a (janky) solution. I was a bit skeptical of it at first, but it fixed this problem for me; I’m downloading at 1.5MB/sec now.
You can try connecting through a free VPN. This just requires you to temporarily set up a network connection on your computer. (See http://www.vpnbook.com/freevpn for more info) You can delete this connection after the download completes.
- Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center
- Click on “Set up a new connection or network”
- Select “Connect to a workplace” and click Next
- Select “User my Internet connection (VPN)”
- Paste the below into the “Internet address:” box and click next (Note, this address may change in the future, check http://www.vpnbook.com/freevpn for the latest servers)

- Enter the following username and password, check the “Remember this password” box, and click “Connect”:
vpnbook

And you should be good to go. Just wanted to share this solution since this was a fairly frustrating affair and I was happy to finally have it resolved.

Michaelangelo, you are expressing your concern as though the underlying implication is that it will ever be resolved! I want to tip my fedora to you for your utmost enthusiasm and optimism for I am forever lost in insufferable amounts of hardship and heart ache.
If I could, my fellow fedora-donning gentlemen, it is as if I have paid for an inconvenience – something beyond my wildest imaginations! I feel as if I am not asking for much, I just want to “experience” the game and breathe in the joys of a fun, engaging and tastefully different MMORPG.

Yeah, nice try. I’m not giving my network over to a “free VPN”.
Does anyone have a legitimate solution? I’m not modifying my personal network to play one game when there’s a dozen other games I can play that actually work.

hmm idk i just bought the game and yeah it sucks they put it on sale to let no one play it or give a reason as to how to fix it

Yea that’s expected to not be able to connect to the login server. Once the game has been fully updated I’m assuming we’ll be able to play w/o the use of the VPN.

Once updated, i disconnected from the VPN and login worked fine.
Same problem. Mangled my file systems trying to find a solution. Not much else to say about it.
Edit: The VPN solution works, although I dislike connecting to a shady link/botnet.
Edit 2: Using the VPN/botnet/honeypot provided to simply bypass the initial sticking screen and waiting till you get to this portion of the download (https://i.imgur.com/rtXBKyW.png) works. At this point, I disabled the VPN, and my connection kicked in. No need to stay connected to it.

I am done tipping my fedoras! My patience can only withstand so much torment! I am conjuring immense rage in my body and I am typing furiously and breathing copious amounts of oxygen as my lungs filters away the carbon dioxide there within. I demand our video game experience be upheld and respected! The amount of anger that is bubbling within is almost comparable to the fine and careful craft found in a mage (I mean, Elementalist) fireball concotion!!!
I hope this segregation of new players is something that is based on the fact that the servers are actually being overworked, not so much because we get treated second rate because we don’t subscribe to the monthly payments typically found in other games in this genre!
My keyboard can only take so much abuse! What if on an optimistic end, I win the lottery and forget suddenly about this game! All this rage and anger pent up for nothing!

Thanks for the workaround, much appreciated! No idea why that actually worked or why it’s necessary, but I was about ready to give up and demand my money back.

I am also having the same problem, and am relieved that it is not just me or my system or ISP. I am leery of using a VPN (and also lazy) so I will wait and see if there is a fix from ArenaNet in the morning. Thanks, all, for the information.
I have tried double clicking the exe, also tried running as administrator, tried running in compatibility mode.. its not a internet issue cuz I get up to 650k and it stops at the same spot everytime.. right around 10g.. I just bought the most amazing game ever that I have been reading about for 3 years, and now im stuck watching a forum and waiting for a support ticket update for about 4-5 hours now… WHEEE? lol

WORKED for installation, TYVM. Sat for 2 hours trying to get it to download.. Login screen popped up in less than 5minutes (still waiting for the major game files to download). Then I’ll turn off the VPN thing and connect normally.

Phileasfogg, I’m right behind you…followed your instructions and now am d/l at about 500kbs – 700kbs vice 0 or 50kbs…can’t log in but I’ll wait
so u guys are going thru the trouble to do the VPN for what exactly? if you still cant play wtf is the point?
Well, this morning it seems to be fixed. I started the installation normally and all has gone swimmingly; download speed is excellent (at least for me) and no hangups so far (fingers crossed!) Now I just have a few hours of download to wait for and I should be good to go. So if anyone else has been waiting for a fix, try now. It seems to be working.

ran in compatibility mode
ran as administrator
uninstalled my drivers / reinstalled them
deleted the install package and downloaded

Had this problem last night. Was using WIFI. Plugged in ethernet and it got me past this screen. Now I’m downloading the 25gb game on about 50 kb/s so I only have about 7 days to go!
hey ramm, thanks for the tip, i was actually just about to try that, only thing i havent tried, another thing is the port forwarding.. i had some issues with this. I was able to forward the 4 ports needed for gameplay, however when checking to see if the ports were open 2/4 reported still being closed.. after I connect to the hard line ethernet cord I will update if it worked.. if not im calling the ISP to ask why the ports are staying closed after being forwarded…. wish me luck!!

The issue seems to come and go. I have been downloading for most of the day, but have twice (that I noticed) gotten the connection error. The first time I stopped the download, and when I started it again it seemed to be OK, if slow. The second time I just waited it out, and eventually it started downloading again. Currently my download speed is fluctuating in the range between 250 and 625 KB/sec; a couple of hours ago it was in single digits or at zero. So my best suggestion is, if it’s not working at the moment, try again later.
Edit: This morning (Monday) it had finished downloading and have been able to log in and play.

I’m glad I’m not the only person having this issue, I posted last night about this exact same issue, and I’ve been in contact with email support and I feel like ArenaNet just doesn’t care…
And the last thing I want to do is to connect to a VPN that I have no clue where it’s connecting to, and what information they are collecting during connection just to download the game.
It’s unacceptable…
