More drastic – pull one of the cards out of the system, then try that. Then put the card back in, pull the other card, then try that. Just in case one of the cards is causing the problem.

Game is poorly optimized (and is CPU bound) and uses multicore processors poorly. They are working to improve things, but it will take them A LONG TIME. That’s all there really is to it.

Been getting extremely low FPS in cities since release (15fps max). I can’t get more than 5FPS with everything at low in wvwvw. I’m above minimum specs and should be getting around 30 at LEAST with everything at low/off. This is really irritating.

To CptBadger – in fact that worked for someone. Don’t be so quick to criticize. In that case it had nothing to do with optimization – it’s some other issue such a driver.

I have the same problem. Game was running fine before the patch a week ago, but now I’m getting 10-15 FPS.

Yesterday evening: 60 FPS, dropping to a rough 30 in extremely crowded areas or dungeons with plentiful spell effects.

This morning, post patch: 30 FPS, dropping to 5 on every single movement, regardless of the amount of things going on on-screen.

Explain.

I took several weeks off from playing GW2 because I was frustrated with low FPS in large battles. Previously, it dropped down towards 10-15 in large-scale WvWvW battles. I played again today, and was pleasantly surprised, it’s now dropping down to 30. CPU usage is significantly higher. There’s still a ways to go in optimization, but it’s great to see increases in FPS.

560 GTX, AMD Phenom II X6 1045T OC to 3.2 GHz, 4GB DDR3

significant fps drop that happened a week ago. Doesn’t matter what settings. Turning camera around is 5-10fps speed, previously was much faster. Basicaly any camera movement causes slide-show. Unplayable for now, waiting for the fix.

I noticed the drop as well.

Far from unplayable for me on my system, but I used to have to cap the FPS because it would hit 80, now it barely peeks over 61 and tends to hover in the 55 range.

The large group play which was not an issue at launch (40 people in queensdale zerging was FINE) is now tanking my high-end system complete with considerable overclocking to 20 FPS.

Definitely a back-end optimization issue here.

The december 3rd patch introduced heavy stuttering and
a big FPS loss for me in all areas of the game.

Just upgraded my PC a little bit and even now the FPS is WORSE than previously!

I am running at some weird custom settings, but the only thin I have maxed is Textures and animations. I used to be able to max near everything, INCLUDING shadows on ultra on my old processor (Athlon II X3 3.3 GHZ) and I could get at least 23 in LA and 40+ in other areas. Now I get 10 in lions arch, and only like 30 maximum in other areas. Is there something I’m missing?

Yes .. you stayed AMD. Sorry to say but AMD cpu’s dont run as well as Intel ones do with GW2, mainly becouse of the single thread performance differences. AMD are fine for multithread performance ‘for the price’, but single thread is not so good. Intel may be more epxensive but their single thread performance is key to playing GW2 with good FPS.

Chances are the cpu u upgraded from has better single thread performance ,dispite the clock speed difference or just doesnt run MMO’s well, compared to your new one.

And compare the two, your new one is better in most things but look at WoW fps, the old one actual gives better performance. Then compare your new one with a Intel i3 3220, the Intel which is from what i found is cheaper ..will beat the A8 5600k.

Well, despite staying AMD or not, I find it strange that I get that much of a decrease in performance when I get a very nice increase in every other game I play or tested with, including games like TERA and BF3. I guess it is just GW2 not supporting AMD as much or something, but it’s quite annoying to get this performance decrease, and I’d rather not spend yet more money switching to intel and having to wipe my drive yet again.

I agree… I’m running on:
Intel i5
Nvidia GeForce GTX 550ti
6gb DDRIII Ram
Windows 7 64-bit

I have my graphics drivers up to date did a clean installation. Have the latest windows service pack installed ect. After a bit of tweaking I managed to get the game to run at 30-40fps average on medium/high detail… but any movement in my camera seems to bring the fps down to about 9. If I don’t move the camera and just simply run with my character then the fps will stay at 40 or so. Hopefully there is a way to fix this.

I will clear up all the confusion about which AMD cpu is good for this game and which intel one is good.

For AMD, FX-8350 is the only viable option for running the game @ 60fps in open world and being able to play pvp without any issues. For WvW no cpu at stock speeds can run the game at 60fps due to poor optimization.

For intel, i5-3570K is the most cost effective option for running the game @ 60fps. It averages more like 70fps in open world.

I have a video proving this for both of these cpus.

Anyone experience this ? Dont think is my settings etc, cause no changes on my other games ( farcry3/hitman/etc)

I´ve got the same problem, but from an earlier patch (december 3rd).
I even got the same CPU as you, but another GPU (Nvidia Gtx 460)

I posted about this before but wanted to let you know, that you and I are not
the only ones with these kind of performance issues.

I have a gtx690 and have ridiculously low fps.

Just to give an example, I can play battlefield 3, far cry 3 maximum 16x fxaa 200+fps across three monitors.

You all need to address your fps. If you get this massive drops in lionsarch, it is most likely, because of winter´s event. There are much more details and people around.

If your overall performance decreased, Anet could have changed something in the background. I personally haven`t noticed any changes during common PvE and dungeons. WvW is still performance killer

I am talking about overall performance. My FPS took a heavy hit.
With the Wintersday update Lion’ Arch in particular became a no-go area for me,
because my frame rate decreased even more to under 14 FPS
(Used to be around 35+ and through the halloween event around
30).

So it seems to be a combination of your two cases.

What makes it so frustrating (at least for me) is that:

-Some of us cannot fully enjoy wintersday
-Not everybody seems to have those problems, which…
makes it a mystery, as performance tweaks on ArenaNets side
should affect all (please correct me if I´m wrong)
-And most of all, there have been issues since release and
in all these month there has not been a word on any progress,
or if they even are still working on it, instead even more issues occur.

Yea but the problem is some people ..not all but some ..of those with problem absolutly refuse to accept that its becouse of their CPU ..they are adimant that their CPU is more than powerfull enough ..even when facts show otherwise.

LA, large PvE events, & WvW all requir a OC’d Intel 2nd/3rd gen i5 to stay above the 30fps minimum most consider acceptable in a non competative game.

Its sound like some monster expensive CPU but they really are not, and OC’ign them is easy nowerdays. A 3570k/2550k + Motherboard + Cooler capable of OC shouldnt cost much more than $370 / £300 which is nothing in the world of gaming computers.

And those with capable computers that have the issue’s turn out to have them becouseo f software related problems . .Like drivers ..unstable OC’s or some such. its just easier for every1 to blame Anet.

Ill admit ..again .. The GW2 could be betetr optimised ..but for how new it is ..what game engine its running ..and then umber of people playing in a single area ingame ..the performance aint bad.

Same issue here. It would run perfectly fine for the first 5 minutes or so, and drop considerably afterwards. I used to be able to run at 60+ FPS, but soon as the Wintersday Update hit, I’m usually at like 25. And, this is in semi empty zones with no other people around.

Also, nothing seems to effect it. I tried setting everything on low, but still getting the same exact results.

Edit: But, it’s NOT the CPU. If every single other game works perfectly, as did GW2 just minutes before the update, it’s GW2’s fault. Not my CPU’s. Yes, I’m sure there’s a certain setup I can use to make GW2 “work” normally, but I will not, and SHOULD not have to buy an entirely new CPU just because of a bug.
Again, GW2 worked fine pre update. Now, it doesn’t.

I have an i7 2600k and a GTX 680 but my FPS is pretty low. I get 20-40 fps no matter what settings i choose, in fact i probably get an extra 5 frames by setting everything on low.

I used to play on a GTX 560 Ti and i got a lot better FPS (60+) so im really confused.

I’ve been getting really low fps all around and at sometimes random and the funny pqart is i have a pretty decent gaming rig so i should have no problem running this game , so what is going wrong????

What fps are you getting and where are you measuring it at? What is the CPU/GPU load and temp. Is your GPU bus speed correct. Drivers/setting correct & up to date?

Your AMD CPU scores 1,224 which is okay, but definitely not the best and behind the curve of the latest CPUs. You have a very powerful GPU, but likely GW2 wont be utilizing it fully because the CPU will be the bottleneck

in the case of guild wars 2, that 1090t doesn’t even escape low end.

I have a Q9550, but with a GTX560 so a little bit better card, but I bet you have more ram than me as I am only using 4 gigs. I am running the game on ultra at 1920 × 1200. In Lion’s Arch I started getting like 11 fps, but honestly, if I did not look at the number, I would think it was much higher.. In other areas running around I was getting 58 fps. I wonder some how accurate that meter is.

I would say if you are looking things in Lion’s Arch it is not going to be as accurate because all the snow and stuff they have going on is much more taxing than Lions Arch normally is

Far Cry 3 with 200 FPS at 5760×1080 or more? That’s… unusual. With mixed settings I can’t even reach 60 FPS.

Lion’s Arch: 23 FPS (highest settings) at 6024×1080 and 26 FPS at 1920×1080

I’m not spending money upgrading my comp for 1 game when there’s nothing wrong with it, expansions will stay on the shelf.

Id like to see sales figures of the exp compared with initial sales of gw2, no way im buying any expansion when it runs so kitten and i can play other games np 60 fps+

please anet sort out this dire performance in terms of fps instead of working on your expansions, because if you don’t nobody will buy your expansion, put your efforts into fixing the main game instead of pouring all your resources into banging an expansion out which i assume will sell a quarter of what gw2 did IF your lucky. Get the main game running fluidly and ppl will buy it

i used to really enjoy wintersday…but now i can’t even pass 45FPS without any shadows or reflections at LA since 2 days ago (i know, it could be worse…it’s not like i set up my GTX580 to max performance at the nvidia CP…oh wait! i did! -_-)…i didn’t even dared to participate at tixx’ airship at the black citadel
but that’s normal at any event…i mean the game is badly optimized and it requires some epic patch to be released…let’s hope that the money they get from wintersday gem store items will help releasing such a patch more sooner

Are there any people with AMD gpu’s who can give some advice? I’ve also read the Sticky FAQ but nothing really helped.

Edit: Also setting priority to high in Task Manager, using game booster and enabling gaming mode with Anti virus doesn’t seem to be helping much…

GW2 is “VERY” cpu-bound. Go read the thread, you will understand why, and how to confirm/verify it yourself. GW2 is not BF3, apples and oranges. People that want 30fps+ in heavy WvW have Core i5/i7 2nd gen or higher overlocked to 4.2-4.5ghz.

Intel 2nd/3rd gen i5’s and above can handle WvW with 30fps as the minimum, BUT they NEED to be OC’d to as close to or above 4.5ghz.

No stock cpu can keep fps above 30 in WvW battles, and only the CPU’s i mentioned above can do it when OC’d.

I have read the thread and I know what bottleneck is but that doesn’t really help either. Plus there are people with a i7 who are suffering more fps drops than me. So don’t act like GW2 is the most cpu demanding game in the world because Metro 2033 is also running fine. (I know apple and oranges but that’s one of the most cpu intensive games)

Maybe the game doesn’t make efficient use of the cpu. I hope to see a performance patch in the future than contents on L.A. which drops your fps…

Basically not a lot of people can play WvW? Strange because with stock cpu I’m able to run the game at 35-60 fps (rare occasions 20-24 fps-) but it seems that no ones has a real solution except for the devs. Thank you for the reply though

O i didnt mean to sugest people ‘cant’ play WvW. Its just alot of people play it with sub 30 fps. I couldnt stand that personaly..its bad enough putting up with 30 fps when battles get large enough..thanfully if u have a 2nd//3rd gen i5+ CPU OC’d to 4.5ghz+ u dont see fps close to 30 very often, its more likely to be around 45 which although not perfect, is alot better.. but the MINIMUM u would see would be 30 in really heavy battles.

I know there isn’t a magic solution because I rarely post and google search for my problems because 9/10 questions can be found on the net. My concern was that people with i7 are still having issues. I was just suggesting if people with similar gpu/cpu specs could help out to gain some more fps (seems there is no one at the moment). You don’t have to act all arrogant like you are the owner of Anet and I do appreciate your reply and your time so thank you.

I was not acting arrogant. You asked a question. I pointed to the answer, but you did not like it and imo, responded negatively to it.

However, in the end you did learn that your processor can be bottlenecked.

Yes thank you again for your suggestion but I can’t OC my cpu (it’s not a 3470 k) and I rather not oc cpu for just one game which I play once a week or so. And it was my first time playing WvW (although I own this game for a long time :p). Maybe future updates will optimize this game more and more

I find it shocking there’s been no official response on some kind of patch this is almost 2013 this sort of performance is inexcusable as everyone with fps problems have pretty good pc’s and can run all other current games np whatsoever. No expansions for me not when it runs this bad, fix the fps and I’ll buy your expansions
