Many People: “I’ll give you money for a ‘Pirate’ Quaggan plushie.”

Result: No plushie

Many People: “I’ll NEVER give you money again if you institute a gear grind.”

Result: Gear grind

Conclusion: Shaka when the walls fell!

Say “buh-bye” to my wallet, ’cause it sure said “buh-bye” to you!

I pre-ordered this game, and bought a large number of gems, MOSTLY because of the firm commitment to anti-grind expressed by the devs over a long period of time. If you abandon this commitment by introducing a gear treadmill, or anything remotely similar, then you will NEVER get another dollar from me; and I will be quite proactive in expressing my disappointment to any gamer I know.

The dungeon is a 2 person dungeon, you could see that when you enter it says “recommended 2 players”

But, people get sent to one per instance. cough Yeah, that makes sense…

Cheering on a disaster does sounds awfully inconsiderate…

That said, acts of [insert deity here] are yet another reason why it is a bad idea to hold an online holiday event only once.

act 3 event -where is it going to be?

Will it work on overflow servers? There seem to have been several oversights already about making events available to everyone…

Well, I spent half an hour rezzing lowbies splattered all over the place along the quest path. Hooboy, good times! I bet they were just having a blast dying every 10 seconds.

The real problem, and it is a BIG problem, is that people specifically asked ANet beforehand whether the events will have a level requirement, and the answer was, “no.” While technically a lawyer could argue that this is indeed the case, I would argue that in practice there has been a breach of good faith.

Whether or not someone could have a level 80 by now is irrelevant. What about the people who bought the game yesterday?

Other games handle these things in a more civilized manner. City of Heroes, for example, generally ran the same holiday events in each zone, at every level range, so that everyone could participate meaningfully.

You could have bought the items off of the auction house instead of attempting the lottery.

Only if I had the money to do so. Not everyone has been able to take advantage of an exploit/unexpected bonanza yet. But there’s always hope for Act III, and failing that, Christmas.

As to the one-time event, I plan to be there, but pity the people who can’t. It makes no sense to hold an event only once when one’s audience is 24/7.

1) Because holidays are about participation and fellowship, not about exclusion and reminding people of real-life inequities. Above all, in a computer game, it is possible for everyone to have everything. It’s just too hard to let your inferiors forget their worries for a few days?

2) Right. Which totally blows chunks if someone wanted the items locked behind the lottery.

Yes, there are two easy ways to make sure that people don’t feel ripped off by special events.

1) Make sure that everyone gets everything that’s given out during the event. Whatever you do, under no circumstances let a small handful of people make a killing on easily obtained items, and ONLY THEN patch the game to prevent everyone else from doing so.

2) If you MUST sell a holiday item through a RMT store, just sell it straight up instead of forcing people to gamble.

The day-to-day grind will still be there for the rich to lord it over the poor after the holiday is over.

Others have explained quite well why a level playing field makes more sense for any form of PvP.

In PvE, gear treadmills are bad because they fragment the player base. Even now, with the low barrier to “best” gear, many groups doing dungeons demand “full exotic gear ONLY.” I suppose that if they find out halfway through a dungeon that your offhand weapon is only “rare,” they’ll kick your kitten out of the party. One can only imagine the kind of stupidity that would go on if we had gearscore or the like in game…

From the dev point of view, anything that spreads out the bell curve of player character ability makes it more difficult to create new PvE content. Even now, what is much too easy for some is much too difficult for others. what would they have to do to challenge someone with an Infinity+1 sword and Plate of Uber Ownage? Who else could run that content, even if the devs had the time to build it?

What Fozzik said!

Having been driven out of my last two MMOs by the cancerous spread of gear progression, I can only hope that this refuge manages to stay free.

I enjoy PvE and a little RP from time to time, but WvW in this game looks promising too. Decades of crunchy military strategy games have given me a long-term outlook, and I like to think of myself as a team player.

Rotating shifts at work mean that I could be in the game at any time of day or night, though my peak hours fall between 02 and 12 UTC. Also, normally I am gone three to five nights a week, but tend to be on for many hours at a stretch when I do log on.

Currently, my five characters reside on Sea of Sorrows, but I would be willing to relocate as long as the free transfers remain in effect.

My goal in the short run is to level up and gear out three characters (as a form of nerf insurance). Currently my ranger has reached 80 with full exotics, and my mesmer is at 70. My warrior, whom I intend as my primary WvW character, has not even made it out of the tutorial yet.

Once these three are done, I just plan to wander around the beautiful game world looking for people to help. It would be grand to know a few good folks with whom to do so.
