64-Bit Client Consuming 2X Memory Usage

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

64-bit client uses way more memory than 32-bit, nothing you can do about it. It’s still in beta so not as optimized, and add to this that 64-bit applications use more memory in general.

What can you do:
- lower/turn off some of the most memory-consuming game settings: Character Model Limit/Quality, Textures Quality, High-Res Character Textures
- turn off any extra programs while playing (including ones running in the background), maybe uninstall some not needed stuff
- last thing is adding more memory to your system… 8 GB is pretty much the minimum for 64-bit client if you want smooth gameplay and reasonable graphics detail level

Test won’t tell you if it’s overheating or just broken. Or if it’s a problem with something else on mainboard. Or maybe with memory. That’s why I suggest to check it like this.

Something might be wrong with mainboard, and my guess is it could be this thing marked on the photo (hidden under radiators). It might be either overheating or it’s faulty. It supplies power to the CPU, and GW2 is very CPU demanding. You can try giving it a better cooling by temporarily putting a fan to cool it (a room fan or something, just to test).

Fps lag or stutter even over 30 fps

I’m also running AMD + Nvidia setup, and I noticed something strange.

When my fps is limited by CPU (like in zergs), it feels much smoother than when I’m limited by my graphics card (solo play in graphics heavy locations, for example). The difference is huge – 20 fps in CPU-limited situation feels much more fluid than 35 fps in GPU-limited situation. Really, really odd.

As someone playing on a 4:3 monitor, I’d also really want to make it disappear, a lot of space wasted

64 bit client uses much more memory than 32 bit. Maybe your system is running out of memory and starts using page file a lot (which is very very slow)?

Latest patch is also causing problems for me. I got my first OOM crash ever (and I’m playing since relase).
Before I could have game running without restarts all day, doing all world boss events, including Tequatl, Karka and other problematic (for others) ones, switching maps many times and I never had any problems.
Game memory usage never went past 2.8 GB (and was generally averaging 2.2 GB during events, hitting max 2.8 GB only at massive fights like Tequatl or Karka).
After new patch… fresh game start, moved to Megadestroyer and crashed few minutes later, with crash report indicating game went up to 3.6 GB (a new record for 32-bit client?).
I switched to 64-bit client and problems fixed, but I had to lower my settings, because it uses a lot more memory compared to 32-bit. I’m not happy, not at all.
I wish I could afford new PC now but sadly I can’t. So I hope this gets fixed somehow…

Crash to blank screen with sound (SOLVED)

My card is Gigabyte GeForce GTX260 Core216 – factory clocks (GPU/Shader/Mem) are 650/1400/2000 Mhz. Lowered it to 630/1350/2000 and game never crashed again since.

How did you come up with what to lower it by?

I was lowering clocks by 10 MHz, played for 2-3 days to check if its stable, if not then 10 Mhz down again, till game stopped crashing.

I had same problem. Everything else but GW2 and WoW was running great. Even Furmark and very demanding games like Crysis were 100% stable. But GW2 and WoW kept crashing with “Graphics driver stopped responding but recovered” message – sometimes every 5 minutes, sometimes few hours.
What fixed it for me was lowering my graphics card clocks when I play GW2 – I know it’s not perfect solution as it slows the card down, but it’s better than crashes, right?
My card is also a factory overclocked version…guess I just got a worse one, or something.

64-bit Client Beta FAQ

I just tried the new 64 bit client. I never had a single crash, not even after HoT launch and I do big fights like Tequila daily. So that was just out of curiosity.
My experiences so far:
- gained few fps during boss battles, and they feel more fluid (biggest difference in Frozen Maw, from 15-20 fps to 25-30 fps)
- no difference in fps during solo/small groups
- CPU usage during boss battles increased, from 50-60% to 70-90%
- memory usage dramatically increased, for example idling in LA, same place: 32 bit client uses 1.6 GB, 64 bit uses 3.0 GB (that’s sadly too much for me to stick with 64 bit client, as total memory usage goes to 100% and my HDD goes crazy…and of course I start getting stutter and spikes)

My crap system:
AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0 GHz
4 GB DDR2 1066
GeForce GTX260 896 MB
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I got same bug while doing my personal story today. New account, created few weeks ago. Human, Durmand Priory, picked “Fear of letting an innocent die” and I got Shell shock I guess there is nothing I can do now, thought I’m really sad about this. My personal story is broken forever, and I care about these things I don’t even bother with making a ticket, because I’m sure Anet won’t fix my personal story and just tell me to post a bug report.

I have same problem since expansion update. But not only for bosses, but also for regular events. Half of them show, half not. No orange circle on minimap, no event description in the top right panel. Just like there is no event at all. And for some of the bugged invisible events I get contribution, for some not
