Why should a total noob be at 163 mastery points? Just why?
And why should a total noob on mini games not be at mastery level 136?
I don’t think the skill to play mini games has anything to do with the skill to play mmo game. It is two different game genres. The reasons to not being able to play mini games are more than a terrible learn to play issue. Spending three months playing mini games would be stupid of me. (wink)
The only way to collect enough mastery points to be able to use all new abilities should not require playing short timed mini games.
There is only one thing to say – Shame on you ArenaNet for locking mastery points behind mini games!
Why would anyone like to play a game that locks you out from being able to enjoy all the new mastery abilities? There are 129 mastery points available in HOT, you need 114 for all the HOT mastery tracks.
Yes, I know that. I also know that here are 31 mastery points from the mini games and 1 from Tarir challenge winner. 129 ./.32 = 97.
of those 32, you can get half of them really easy, just get gold in the babys mini games and in the difficult ones try to get silver (not so difficult)
in VB only shotting gallery its a pain in the kitten , with a little of practice you can get silver
in AB you got 2 games that with a little of practice you get gold fast, the rest you can aim silver with not too much problem.
in TD, ley-line run, bettle feast and drone race, the same thing: a little of practice and you get gold.
with that you are more than ready, also you can toss another 12 points with not getting nuhoch alchemy, the most useless mastery.
What seems to be easy for you might not be easy for everyone. For me it is impossible to do fast-paced, single-mini games. I can’t even score bronze in the “babys mini games”.
The game will never be balanced around the lowest denominator, sorry.
I am one of those that can’t do the mini games in HoT. I agree with tonny and I agree with Sister. It’s not about balancing the game around the lowest denominator. It was unnecessary to lock so many mastery points behind mini games. In what way would the game suffer with a couple of more mastery points scattered around the new maps?
I think all mastery abilities are going to be needed. Looking at the turn this expansion has taken I can see no reason to why not all mastery should be required to be unlocked. If not able to unlock all mastery abilities it will be a consequence later on.
In HoT there is content that some players are unable to do even if they want to collect the mastery points. I think it should have been more options to collect mastery points. I see no real reason to why there could not be more mastery points to collect without playing mini games or repeating story. That has nothing to do with mastering the game or the skill to play the game. Also who would come to harm if some mastery points would be given for going one level or two?
For what it is worth, I feel with you Ezeriel.
I will be out of mastery points as I am unable to do the mini games and some of the other achievements. I join you on the “looser, loser, loser” all day long.
I agree with GlitchyBat. Locking ranger pets behind a successful end event is utterly baffling. Those pets are not going to be my ranger’s babies.
Very well written Julischka Bean! Good to have it pointed out and in the open. I agree with you and I was smiling when reading your post.
I am the causal player that wants to enjoy myself when playing. It is fantastic to enter a fantasy world and for a while let go let of the real life’s never ending dailies and time pressure at work. GW2 is a great game with lots of way to play, different choices of how and when to do it. When playing HoT I get the feeling of being mastered by the wicked stepmother in fairy tales.
I don’t see any real reason for locking up essential and needed abilities behind grinding. If there is a need for a progression and earning abilities through grinding it should be for things in the game that is optional.
I hope that the starting area will have enough content to unlock gliding, mushroom jumping and the other things that is needed to continuing to play the game without being forced into grinding events.
People love to use the word grinding, but in reality I could have had 3 of the key abilities unlocked in a couple of hours of play, which really isn’t that onorous. Nor is it really grind because I can do different tasks to level those. For example, story missions, adventures, grinding mobs, or dynamic events…even gathering.
Playing the game isn’t really grinding. It’s playing the game. Stuff has always been gated, in every MMO including this one. Weapon swap didn’t unlock at level one when this game launched. You had to level to unlock it.
It’s just a progression system, and it’s not that onerous. However, the higher level things probably are. If you need those to raid, that would be a much larger problem.
You seem to have more information and thank you for sharing. I have only seen the content from the betas and first stress test. If I can unlock mastery abilities without running events in Hot I will be very happy.
I have not experienced GW2 to be grindy when it comes to leveling a character. Optional content has in some cases been very grindy but I can choose to not go for it. I did not have to run events or world bosses in order to progress and play the game. GW2 has managed to keep the grinding away from playing the game. Hopefully it will not change with HoT. I really dislike running events in a huge group of player and the thought of repeating those events over and over feels very onerous.
I also love those new pets. They are awesome, funny and cute. Those pets was the big suprise in this thrid beta. I hope we will be able to take those pets out of the HoT area.

I fully understand the concern. Have my thoughts about the expansion too and hope for a content suitable for a slow uncoordinated player like myself. I hope the expansion contains more than fights with mordrem creatures. I hope the expansion will contain other ways to earn skills in gliding, mushroom and lore than from the event in Verdant Brink. The way of playing in Verdant Brink seems to me being a repeat of Silverwaste. I hope there will be alternatives to Verdant Brink with other ways of playing the game without having to participate in the type of play style like the one in Verdant Brink. I dont like the play style in Verdant Brink but I love the area, it is really beautiful.
