Given that the stickied thread still hasn’t received a reply, I’m curious as to what the people who aren’t posting in said thread are feeling about the current level of open world rewards, disregarding any possible bugs. Are they adequate, in your opinion, based on the time required to do whatever action is creating the reward? This includes Champion and Veteran loot, whenever they do decide to drop something.
I would have just made this a simple forum poll, but those don’t seem to exist in this forum. Still, curious about the general feelings toward ingame rewards, even though this thread will probably be closed within the next day.
Run with your combat log open. It shows damage and hits even on invisible targets.
Oh, I do. My aoe still rarely generates damage. Thanks for the feedback. Could you also share what other classes require this level of anticipation of what the enemy might do next, or go next?
None, in the sense of constant stealth. But in the sense of relying on deception and distractions to stay alive, Mesmers fit that bill. They have the ability to transfer between their clones, stealth abilities, and teleports. All of these are similar to what the thief gets, but less focused on the stealth aspect.
There was a post by Jonathan Sharp regarding their design philosophies. The thief section states:
“Thieves are the masters of mobility, stealth and high single target damage. They can be very fragile if you counter their stealth with area of effects or large stacks of conditions, but they trade this fragility in order to have some of the highest burst damage in the game. They are able to help allies through traps, venoms and the mobility to flank most encounters.”
What most people are complaining about, is how the class is meant to be played. There are counters available to you, you just have to look for them. Evade CnDs and you go a long way to countering any dagger offhand stealth thief (which is the most bemoaned thief). Learning to recognize the steal/CnD combo and how to dodge the CnD (or at the very least the following backstab) will also help mitigate most of the upfront burst, and deter a lot of thieves.
My biggest problem with this, is that it was hard to see that it is an exploit. The reason being, and I haven’t seen this brought up yet, is that salvaging jewelry has a very high chance of giving the gem used to craft the item back. Go test it yourself. Buy 10 rares of any crafted piece of jewelry and salvage it, even with a Master’s kits. 8-9/10 times you’ll get the gem back. Because the recipe only took 1 gem (rather than 5, like the other recipes) it automatically gave profit due to 90% of the time getting that gem back.
Is it fair to say that the player should have realized this? Hard to say. You’d think ANet would have a more intimate knowledge of their own crafting profession (that it’s going to give back the gem, a large portion of the time, while requiring a SINGLE gem). There were posts asking about this, whether it was an oversight or not, and yet no response was ever given. This goes back to ANet’s lack of communication with the playerbase, and it’s hard to place blame given how often they seem to shy away from communicating anything with the playerbase.
This is the problem in a nutshell. 0 risk engagement and disengagements and an easy 75% burst.
No risk engagements? I suppose there’s not much risk for the few seconds it takes you to sneak up on someone, but the moment you’re attacking you cannot stealth for the duration of the Revealed debuff. Given that GW2 relies on an active combat system, they want you to pay attention and react to what’s going on around you.
Let’s say you’re strolling along in WvW, doing whatever you do in WvW. Suddenly, someone you didn’t see hits you. What do you do? Stand there? Let them get a free, high-damage ability off on you instead of, say, dodging? Because that’s all you really have to do to stop a thief from getting their initial backstab. Hell, if you get good enough, you can completely mitigate their stealth and leave them even more vulnerable (dodging as soon as they hit you with steal, so their CnD doesn’t connect). Sure, it takes some practice to get used to, and can be harder with some higher skill players, but it’s not impossible to mitigate almost all of a thief’s initial burst (their strongest burst, typically).
“But Ansi, what if they use Basilisk Venom?” you may ask. Well, to be frank, every class has a stun break. Why don’t you carry one? It doesn’t matter what profession I’m playing, I almost always have one stun break on my bar except for completely situational circumstances. Hell, it amazes me at the -warriors- who complain about thieves. They have a tech that makes them invulnerable for a full 5 seconds and breaks stun.
Let’s say a thief wants to disengage. Their primary mechanic for doing this is their stealth, which again can be countered. Popped Shadow Refuge? Drop an AoE on their AoE, if the thief leaves then the stealth breaks and they’re stuck out of stealth for the full Reveal debuff, if not they’re tanking a chunk of damage when they are already trying to disengage. If they’re running Hide in Shadows (the only heal that stealths them), that means their means of getting rid of mobility debuffs (cripple, chill, immobilized) are severely limited. If they have Shadowstep (most newer Thieves running the full GC BS build won’t have this) they may still be able to get away, but other than that their options are now pretty limited.
Ansimika – Feel free to post or don’t post. From my preliminary testing I find that I am fine (but not completely satisfied – but I would never admit satisfaction anyway) with the amount I am getting from drops alone. When all the other sources of in-game gold are factored in (and still not even including playing the TP) I think the opportunities are there.
Would I like for ANet to develop a more excellent loot system that will revolutionize the MMO industry? Yes definitely. If that were possible and if it would need the cooperation of existing players I believe there are more than enough players who will gladly pitch in to help.
So by no means should you or anyone feel obligated to do any testing to that goal.
But, as a poster before me said, with the low level of communication ANet is having with their community, how are we supposed to know what direction they’re going? How do we know they’re out to develop a “more excellent loot system” or are just trying to distract us from the problem that is being swept under the rug? So far, there’s no evidence to the former and lots of speculation about the latter. ANet could easily put this speculation to rest, but instead they remain silent. What kind of message is this? All most people have wanted, from the beginning, was for ANet to acknowledge them, and not just blow them off with wording that is purposefully vague and, frankly, insulting.
I want to believe that Anet is looking into this, and I want to believe that they are trying to revolutionize the genre even further. But I just haven’t seen any indication of this or any positive action. Just more PR spin, more misdirection, and less real communication.
@Aproposs
While I respect what you’re doing here, and admire your dedication to perform ANet’s employees jobs for them, I must stress that the game -isn’t- in beta anymore. Your call to arms for us all to ‘beta test’ for ANet when we already bought the game is outrageous. If we were all still participating in beta, maybe I’d be more inclined to do this. But the fact of the matter is, there was already a thread for a month, with lots of data for ANet to use. They blatantly ignored the thread (which remained on the front page of this forum) for a full month before giving a single reply and locking the thread.
Do you really expect them to jump to communicate with us on this, identical but ‘approved’ thread when they didn’t have the courtesy to respond at all over a month, while openly admitting in the AMA to dodging the question? If I had any hope that ANet would really take this seriously, maybe I would join you on your crusade. But after watching that thread and the lack of response, I just don’t have it in me to extend the benefit of the doubt any further. After a point, it becomes hard to do that.
Maybe if I see something positive and transparent from ANet I’ll join you in posting my loot logs; hell, I’ll even make it into a legitimate spreadsheet for easy viewing.
As of late, I run a lot of dungeons…way more than I’m comfortable with. It’s mostly because that’s one of the most time efficient ways to make money. Open World farming gives me kitten all typically, running events in Orr is mindnumbingly boring and usually not too many people there now. Running Fractals is something I’ve begun to do more of recently, though it’s getting tiring quick. Other than that, I just level alts (trying to get an 80 of every profession, eventually. Without relying on crafting, ofc).
I want to believe that you’ll find something to do in GW2, given the amount of content that is actually in the game. Lately a lot of maps are completely desolate, however, so it may be a bit difficult in some areas. Just remember that the truth is out there =).
Schatzy: Sir I demand an apology and my money back this is Blasphemy
Shopkeeper: Eeer sorry sir what can i help you with?
Schatzy: I bought these pair of shoes 3months ago! okay 3 months ago and now when i return to your shop your selling the exact same shoes for £20 cheaper HOW DARE YOU, you might aswell flip me off while your at it.
Shopkeeper: Well im sorry sir but were having a sale since its near the holidays we want to encourage people to buy our product by lowering the price its basic economics sir.
Schatzy: Dont you give me that " its basic economics sir." Bs i demand you reinstate my money back for the shoes and you change the price back to its original cost NOW!.Thats how i imagine you would react to that situation
and the moral of the story is: that’s basic economics!
Well, about that…I’ve worked in retail for several years, and I’ve run into that exact same situation all the time. People come back, asking to get the lower price on items they purchased weeks or (occasionally) months ago. They will kitten, moan, yell, and do whatever they legally can to get what they want. If you refuse them, they’ll ask to return the item just so they can purchase it again at the new price. It’s insane, but then I guess people tend to be batkitten.
15 pages, dear god. I cannot believe this still hasn’t gotten a proper response. This is insane. Even if this plays out to be some kind of bug, what kind of customer service is this? Clearly they are watching, yet they are doing nothing but lurking their own forum. It makes absolutely no sense.
But I don’t understand the logic. You don’t want people who have received chests already to get another chest, because it would be unfair. Okay, that is sound. But it already happened. I’ve talked to several people, and they’ve gotten more than just 2 chests. Because it was not considered an exploit, many people ran the event again on overflows on different characters, obtaining multiple chests even before distribution. And some of these people got another chest from the mailing. This is a pretty big disparity already. And how can you be sure that the same mistake won’t happen again? +1 chest value to the people who already had +3 or +4? What in particular did they do to deserve that over the people who couldn’t even log in for hours on end?
