I honestly love the combat in this game. I find it much more involved than most MMOs. Of course, I find the “healer” role insufferable, I like the fact that I don’t need 500 keybinds just to wipe my butt, and I love being rewarded for having good reflexes.
I hope more MMOs incorporate this action-oriented design where things like dodging and blocking are player-controlled rather than being stat numbers. And as far as the zergs go… that’s kind of how combat works. I have no problem whatsoever with the fact that most events end up looking like a scene from Braveheart.
You played the game for a month and you want a refund? Lulz.
But yeah, sell crafting mats if you need money. One of the most reliable paths to financial self-sufficiency in any MMO is not crafting your own gear but gathering mats to sell to crafters. While they’re sweating out skill points, you’re counting out profits.
Then, afterward, if you really want to take up a craft for personal reasons, you can do so with a well-geared main, a fat roll of cash, and a bank filled with mats.
Still missing my main point.
This class is a role instead of a play style. All of the skills are pushing towards the role of being a supporter, whether that’s healing or protection doesn’t matter. The point is that it does it better than any other class, which severely limits the options available to other classes. I mean christ, one of the skills gives the guardian practically every boon in the game. It’s the ultimate support class in a game where every class is suppose to be able to fill any role. Sure other classes can do it, but this one does it WAY better.
Support is a lot of things. Yes, many different classes offer support options, but they’re all different. Guardian isn’t the best at “support” unless you mean a very specific kind of support, in which case… yes, we’re pretty great. I’m also routinely told elementalists offer some fantastic defensive support, but I don’t play the class so I can’t really say.
I don’t see what’s so foul about the idea that guardians, the class billed as the most overtly defensive-minded, should happen to excel at defensive utility. It’s exactly what it says on the tin.
Libertine, I do try to avoid as much damage as I can. I know I’ll never be a true tank or healer in the trinity sense, but I did roll guardian to protect people. Finding the optimal balance between damage output, utility, and survivability will probably take a long time (and vary according to situation), and I’m okay with that, I just know that if I have to pick one of the three as a starting point, I prefer survivability.
I didn’t mean to imply that you didn’t dodge or block or anything, was speaking about it generally
It sounds like you have a pretty solid thing going on. Starting with high survivability is a good tactic. I am myself just now trying to get more damage out of my build by changing some of my armor to berserker’s pieces. Work in progress
I’m not offended at all, I just didn’t want to give the impression that I’m trying to make the class into something it’s not. I mean… I was, for a bit, but I learned from some of my more painful mistakes in that regard.
I’m definitely coming around to the idea of pushing my offense more. I’m only 50 now, but I’m begining to appreciate the fact that all the defense in the world won’t keep me alive if my damage output is pathetic.
All of the answers have been helpful. Much appreciated.
Bynaar, what you described is the conclusion I’m coming to as well. They’re both pretty great, and that’s part of what makes the choice so difficult. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how durable I am with proper use of the hammer.

I did try the greatsword thing for a zone or two… I can see why it’s a popular weapon, but it’s not my style.
Made a Guardian this past week, up to level 43 now. Very happy with the class, but experiencing a little confusion about what the optimal choice of “tanking” weapon set would be.
My first thought was mace/shield. The mace has exceeded expectations, but the shield has disappointed. It seems like mace/focus is the superior choice for personal survivability and that’s the bottom line I’d like to keep in mind.
Flipping back a few pages through the class forum here, I’m also seeing hammer recommended as a strong defensive weapon… apparently because of the protection buff on the tail end of its autoattack? Is it really comparable to mace/focus? Better? Worse?
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.
I bought this game yesterday and it looks very cool, but the friend who got me into it has all their characters on Tarnished Coast. I would really like to roll a character there so I can be on the same server with them, but apparently it’s Full at all hours of the day. The ones I’ve checked, anyways.
So… is there anything I can do? Would it work to make a character on another server and then transfer it over? Should I just wait until a particular hour?
