The API doesn’t talk to any relational databases; the recipe search endpoints are using hand-rolled indexes. This doesn’t really scale in a sane way; it would be ideal to toss all of the data into a more production-ready indexing solution (read: hand-normalize it into SQL, or toss is into an indexed document store ala Lucene) but we don’t really have the resources to set up and maintain additional third-party software solutions.
Oh my god I am so sorry this is the case.
With regards to OP’s request, the GW2Spidy API might be of use. They poll the official API and keep all of their data in a separate database. Because of this, they support searching for an item by name.
The API endpoint for gem conversions is currently the opposite of the functionality in-game. On the API, you specify the amount of gems you want to convert to coins, but in-game you specify the amount of gold you want and it tells you how many gems you need to convert.
Unfortunately, I can’t figure out a way to get the conversion information the game offers without polling the API multiple times to get an amount by trial and error.
Is there 1) any way to easily poll the API to get the required information or 2) any chance we could have this implemented as an endpoint?
There has to be a solution, given that the game itself performs this function near instantly anyway.
I made this quick video that shows all 50 locations of the Karka hatchlings.
The free update is live, so you can download it for no cost. I’ve also pushed a hotfix to deal with a problem for people who had bought the app before the update.
You can leave any questions or suggestions you have here, I should be timely to reply.
Because I couldn’t fit it in the title, this app is currently only available on iOS, but Android/Windows Phone support is coming soon
This app brings a number of features that are distinctly lacking in the competition. This includes a lot of automatic calculations and very detailed filtering options.
Searching
Most of the app revolves around the search view. As you can see here, each search result tells you the Sell Price, Buy Price, Flipping Profit, Rarity and Profit Percentage. The profit percentage is represented as how green the cell is.
Refining Results
You can tap the ‘Refine’ button to bring up this menu. From here you can sort the items in the search view and filter each property precisely.
The criteria for sorting are:
- Name
- Item Level
- Profit
- Profit Percentage
- Sell Price
- Buy Price
- Supply
- Demand
- Rarity
The criteria for filtering are the same, excluding ‘name’.
Item Details
Back in the search view, each cell can be selected to bring up a detailed view for each item, [url=http://i.imgur.com/UdGjDai.png]like so.
Saved Items
Here you can see the type of item and the buy/sell amounts. You can also see all of the buy and sell listings available for the item.
On the item detail screen, you can add the item to a list of saved items. The saved list acts in the same way to the search screen, with the same information and filtering functionality.
Contact
There is a subreddit available over at /r/TradingPostHelper. Here you can submit feature requests / bug reports and post discussion or questions. Feel free to send me a mail in game as well if you need help.
Pricing
The app is available now for $0.99 or your regional equivalent. If you don’t want to pay, you can wait until the next update releases in about a week, then the app will switch to Free but ad supported. Ad removal will be available for $0.99, and anyone who buys it before then will automatically have the ads removed.
Anyone who buys the app now or the ad removal later will have access to ‘Pro’ features in the future.
Finding The App
You can find the app on any worldwide app store under the name “Black Lion Trading Post Helper”, with a black and gold icon of the Black Lion head.
Planned Features (Some may be Pro only)
The following features are planned for the near future:
- Alerts for when the price of an item rises/falls beyond a threshold
- Item recipe details
- Dye colour matching (you enter a colour and it finds the nearest dyes and tells you the prices)
- Windows Phone Support
- Android Support
It’s offline for Maintenance for me
EDIT: Also, there’s a 5 minute cache on responses, so you don’t need to poll it that often.
Will this be getting reduced in the future, or is this a “take as given” limitation on the API (30 seconds was more what I was hoping for)
5 minutes is our current default; I couldn’t immediately think of any use-cases that would benefit from a reduced TTL so I just left it as default. What did you have in mind?
I can think of a few scenarios where immediate access would be useful. I can’t really think of a use that wouldn’t be restricted by a 5 minute cache.
Trick or treat bags also do the trick nicely

What do they drop? Is it items and luck?
Oh, I also made a tutorial for getting way more magic find for quite a kitteneaper.
Don’t worry, I’m not trying to raise the prices. I use this method as well! takes off tinfoil hat
I made a video showing a really quick way to get loads of magic find. I posted it to Reddit and thought I’d post it here as well.
