I’m trying to cut down on my tendency to spam alts in MMO’s, so I’ve decided to go with only one profession per armor class (for now). I’m playing a thief for medium and a warrior for heavy and I’m enjoying them thus far. So I was hoping that I could get a few opinions on which light armor profession I should choose.
I guess I’d want a character that levels fairly quickly and can stand well on its own. As far as end game considerations go, I don’t like PvP that much, so it doesn’t really matter to me how well the Mesmer, Elementalist, or Necromancer do in that arena. I would like to play a character that deals solid damage and brings good utility to dungeons.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice. I’m still new to this game and I’m loving it thus far, so I’m hoping to play a caster that can be as enjoyable as my melee characters.
PS: I guess it isn’t as important, but which race would you suggest? My thief’s a Human and my warrior’s a Charr. Would you guys go with Norn, Asura, or Sylvarri?

Could I get some opinions on this build?

I’m going to be working towards this as I level, focusing on survivability, crits, and sustained damage. I’m hoping that it’ll work in endgame dungeons as well. What do you guys think?
Maybe if you want to pop in, do some minor damage, then pop out but Sword on thief itself is kinda pathetic imo. Doesnt really fit any role other than to be annoying (pistol whip primarily)
That’s not even the S/D skill, dude.
S/D is the best melee set in PvE imo.
Cleave autoattack, infiltrator’s strike is so good it’d take pages to explain, and flanking strike’s boon removal can be useful against enemies that don’t perpetually refresh their boons.
Just excellent.
How do you build around S/D, trait and gear-wise? Power and precision or what?
I apologize if this question comes off as… well… dumb, but the main complaint that I hear about Flanking Strike is that the second attack misses often, but the damage is really good and missing shouldn’t be as big of an issue in PvE, right? Using a sword and a dagger appeals to my blademaster-loving fantasy nerd sensibilities and it came as no small disappointment that the weapon setup is regarded as suboptimal.
I’m still pretty new to this game so please correct me if any of my opinions are off-base. If there are any endgame dungeon-runners out there who go with S/D, what builds/gear do you use?
1. No. If you’re going for unicorn build get a full carrion.
2. Yes, you can buy transmutation stone to transmute gear.
A feature that a certain game copied (but hey, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery)3. You don’t need to mitigate anything with a unicorn build, you are immortal (in PvE at least).
What’s a unicorn build?
This might be a bit premature, seeing as how my thief’s only level 29, but I’ve been reading up on exotic gear sets to figure out how I’m going to eventually look at endgame. I’ll probably end up going with either D/D or S/P condition damage for PvE (I don’t like PvP, generally), so I figured that Carrion gear would be the best route for a combination of damage and survivability.
Unfortunately, I really hate how the Sorrow’s Embrace and Citadel of Flame sets look. Yeah, it’s a lame reason to pass up on the ideal setup, but looking cool is one of my favorite reasons for playing a game that has armor differentiation.
So after that long intro, I have a few questions:
1. Would it make sense to go with the Caudecus’s Manor armor set and mix Rampager pieces with Shaman pieces for condition damage and survivability? Do any experienced thieves run with that kind of set up?
2. Is there any sort of mechanic that allows you to reskin your armor to look like a different piece of armor? I ask because the Crucible of Eternity armor is, imo, the best looking set, but it only offers glass cannon stat combos. I’d love to get Sorrow’s Embrace Carrion armor but reskin it to look like Crucible of Eternity.
3. Can a full Rampager armor set up’s fragility be adequately mitigated through other equipment? Like with Vitality accessories or weapons.
Edit: 4. Leatherworkers can make level 80 equipment, right? How would you compare the difficulty of crafting a full exotic set with the difficulty of getting one through dungeons?
This will be the first character that I max out, so I don’t have any actual endgame dungeon/equipment experiences, so feel free to point out any inconsistencies I’ve made in my opinions or questions. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

3. Be sure to set your eye on a set, dungeon gear is really easy to obtain with guilds (you are welcome to join our guild before they remove free transfers on the 28th). As far as crafting, it’s great for making money. It’s mostly used for flipping items to get a constant flow of money. Farming money can be very hard.
How do I transfer?
I just started a Thief a few days ago (level 25 atm) and I’m planning on making this my first maxed out character. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of beginner’s guide, so I was hoping to get some answers to what are probably terribly obvious questions.
1. Will this build work for leveling? It’s D/D and SB, focused on condition damage. I put it together after reading a few other threads about leveling, and in the short time I’ve been using it, it’s been very effective. But will it take me all the way to 80?

2. That’s the level cap, right? 80?
3. How do you guys gear up at endgame? Is it all just dungeon runs or what? As piecemeal as story quest rewards are, I’ve been crafting all of my weapons and armor (leatherworker/weaponsmith). Can you craft high end stuff/are professions worth leveling?
4. On that note, how do dungeons operate in this game? Do bosses drop loot, or is there a token system or what?
5. Is there like, a list of good endgame builds somewhere? I’m not that interested in PvP, and I figure that whatever happens, I’ll be using the SB as a secondary, so the options for primary weapon set would be D/D, D/P, P/D, P/P, or S/P (I hear that S/D doesn’t do so well). I think that I’m going to prefer direct damage builds after leveling with condition damage. Given these parameters, could someone point me in the right direction?
Sorry about the mass of text, and my general lack of knowledge. WoW taught me that ignorance of game mechanics can stretch way past the level cap and bring down your potential, so I’m trying to absorb as much info as I can early on. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.
Thanks for the responses, guys. I’m definitely going with a offense-oriented spirit weapon build for leveling:
http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#cccz0ocMzmxwMMmmxMMGG9MxoaVRVRq
But I have another question. I know that the cooldown on these things activates after they’re destroyed and not after they’re summoned, but with the Eternal Spirit trait, does the cooldown activate after they’re commanded, or does it still wait until they’re duration is up?
How well does a spirit weapon-based build work? I just really love the idea of summoning a bunch of ghost swords and all that nonsense, but I don’t hear a lot of people talk about them, so I’m wondering if they’re of the opinion that they’re not that effective. I’m only just starting my guardian so I don’t have any of the actual skills yet, but I’d guess that I’d focus in Zeal for the relevant traits. At the moment, it would just be a leveling/solo PvE build. Has anyone tried running with spirit weapons before?
Thanks in advance for any help and advice.
