Guild Boss Ladders

Hey Devs!

As it currently stands, I find that the available guild missions quickly become dull and repetitive. Although they are well designed, we need more/different kinds of encounters. Here is my suggestion.

A new category of unlockable guild mission type would feature a series of progressively more challenging bosses that you must progress through. This would work in tiers as a ladder progression. For example: tier 1 may feature 3 different bosses, all challenging in different respects but all in all fairly easy to start off with. Upon activating the guild mission you are prompted to choose which of the 3 bosses in tier 1 you would like to fight. If your guild successfully defeats that boss then the guild mission succeeds and your progress is saved. After running the guild mission a couple more times and defeating the other two bosses in tier 1, your guild will unlock tier 2, which includes a similar number bosses of increased difficulty and increased reward potential. So on and so forth, for perhaps 4 tiers (progressively more difficult) until you unlock tier 5 and face a single, epic encounter.

These bosses would be an excellent way to challenge the player base in new ways using instanced content as opposed to the frustrating 2 hour spawns/overflowed maps of the current big bosses like Tequatl and Wurm. With a variety of bosses using different mechanics you could encourage a diversity of strategy beyond the typical min/maxed zerg. Many of us would like to see different types of builds encouraged and a guild setting would be the perfect place to do that.

The difficulty of these encounters should build to an extreme degree. A less experienced and coordinated guild should not be able to beat the final boss or perhaps even bosses in the next to last tier without practicing and really taking a look at their gameplay and strategy. In fact, I’d love to see the final boss as an encounter that is truly legendary and could take months for anyone to defeat.

If done correctly this could create a true challenge that gives players something to continually work toward as a guild. It would bring players together, encouraging teamwork and strategic thinking/planning over mindless zerging. Best of all, you wouldn’t have to wait around for hours at a time for the boss to spawn, or waste your time in an overflow.

Sure I didnt need to watch the trailer but I didnt know it would show the amount that it did. Past trailers have done the same. I know whats happened, I know what map is involved, ive seen the carnage and the mobs and the build up. All from a trailer. What if the makers of movies suddenyl decided to place all the key story scenes into their trailers revealing exactly whats going on. Why watch the movie?

Honestly, I think movie trailers do this all the time. How many trailers have shown us images of the destruction of New York city or somesuch? The important part here I think is that it didn’t show us to what degree Lion’s Arch was going to be damaged and it didn’t show us how or why. There’s still a lot of room for speculation here and I’m betting they have some surprises up their sleeves yet.

If you’ve been playing the living story in game you’ll already know that Lion’s Arch is going to be attacked. It was hinted at in the patch before last and basically confirmed in this last one.

Yes! Please! I think Troubleshooter would be a great title for this. Or perhaps Triple Trouble. Troubleshooter’s better though.

Please consider changing the current title. I did the event for fun, but it was hugely challenging to bring down all 3 so I would love a title for the time spent. One that doesn’t make it sound like we just went and zerged the Giant Jungle Wurm in Caledon Forest.

Right, Psynch. It wasn’t until I was posting that screenshot that I realized that there are 2 lines that are swapped in in one passage that aren’t there in the other. This makes a 7 line set that’s different from the 9 line set. I had been working on a 9 line set the whole time. That’s discouraging but it’s also kind of odd that they would bother to do something like that if they just wanted a wall of meaningless text sliding by.

When going through Scarlet’s little slideshow presentation that she put together for us at her control console, one thing I noticed was this stream of code that runs by on the screen with the drill blueprints on it. At first glance this looks like a bunch of nonsense, which it very well might be; however, since Anet has been known to use substitution ciphers before and actually make their in-game languages translatable to english, I thought it might warrant a second look. On top of that, we’ve got a big code theme going on in this patch, with the chests actually being opened by ciphers that you put together from code pieces from the marionette fight and whatnot. You also pull the “code” for her console out of her journal (OMADD).

So, at first it seems that there are far too many characters for it to possibly be a substitution cipher. However, if you accept that each specific rune represents the same letter no matter what its orientation is (they could be turned any which way), you end up with a far more manageable number of letters. I ended up with about 20 letters depending on whether certain runes could be combined. I’d share my work but it hasn’t led me anywhere yet so if you want to try cracking this code (if it even is a code) you might as well start on your own.

What do you think? Am I way off base? Keep in mind it’s much easier to create a code than to crack it, so if they wanted to put a message in there using those figures it wouldn’t be very hard to do. I could be barking up a holographic tree though. :P At any rate, I’m tired of messing with it so I thought I’d pass the idea along and see if anyone else wanted to try.

Wintersday Gems for Charity

Hey devs!

I don’t know if this idea is financially viable for you, but I thought it might be nice to have a percentage of gem sales during the holiday season go toward a charity benefiting people in developing nations (i.e. Heifer International, etc.). Not only would this keep in the holiday spirit of giving in a very real sense, but it would also likely result in a boost in gem sales that would more than compensate for the amount that you gave to charity. Moreover, your image as a company would get a good publicity boost. It’s worth considering.

Yes! A lot of the current content is, to be honest, kind of easy and boring. You nailed it with this dungeon. Great work and great level design.

Give us more of this kind of content. :]

@DeWolfe: Definitely nothing wrong with rangers in this dungeon. Just did it with 2, healing spring and pet revives help a lot. And I have to disagree there; getting an adrenaline response means you’re buying into, at least a little bit, the situation you’re in. Same way an action movie can make your blood pump by suspending reality for you.
