It’s possibly because jack hasnt explained it too well or maybe you misunderstood his point but the reason our alliance is leaving the underworld isn’t actually to do with nightcapping (subjective term). It’s because the server has been in complete freefall for about 4/5 weeks now.
For reasons unbeknown to us, we’ve seen several large guilds either stop playing completely or migrate to other realms. Participation has been falling at an alarming rate and the server is completely demoralised. We have been working hard to try and repair the damage this has done, but underworld is already fast approaching rock bottom with no means by which to recover. Our alliance is not going to jump straight to a top tier server, we’re actually moving to a mid range server, but one that has the potential to go higher and set about working there.
Sure, we could stay and recruit people to underworld but let’s be realistic here. Why would people go to a realm with a declining WvW population and thats currently in freefall? People are not easilly going to give up their guild perks, possible members and strong server just to come here unless the que times were so disproportionate (2/3 hours +) and even then there are much better transfer destinations to move to with better potential. I was on Xavius back when i played WoW and i “stuck it out” there as our server died. It wasnt fun and I personally have no desire to go through all of that again in this game.
If that makes us bandwagoners for moving to a mid tier server then so be it, but in my opinion when your servers only PvP objective is to screw about because nothing else is realistically attainable then it’s time to throw in the towel. Fun is subjective I know, but for us it isn’t fun when our server can’t even fight back.
We’re also part of the alliance that [FMV] are part of and we too are looking at moving away. Underworld is a good realm, but participation in the last two weeks has been abysmal. At any time there has been almost instant ques and even during peak times we have had the outmanned buff.
We have tried to help resolve the issue, but we have seen good friends and people leave the server now because they are fed up of the situation and anets refusal to address the situation within a reasonable time frame. As bad as it looks, we would rather focus our alliance efforts elsewhere and help shape a realm with the assets there to make it happen.
We have no intentions of becomming a night capping alliance. We will be moving to a realm with the same prime time we are used to as we prefer playing vs people as opposed to doors. However, we don’t feel like doing this to the point where we end up admiring the enemy from our spawn point.
The golem issue could be solved by requiring the use of skillpoints or keep it at a financial cost so that they remain rarities, rather than a golem war as you pointed out.
Ah my apologies, I thought you meant something else. Even so, the underlying problem still remains that due to the scarcity of gold, people are reluctant to spend it where they don’t feel they’re getting a good return on said investment. Under my proposition, this effect is mitigated because of the rate that karma can be gathered.
In addition, enforcing tax systems within guilds is difficult. The idea im suggesting is also a heck of a lot easier to implement without having a potentially negative impact on guilds. Games like EVE online support taxation because money is easy to get and there are tangible benefits such as the corp paying for ship reinbursement etc. In GW2 those such benefits dont exist so a taxation system wouldnt be well suited.

I was reading the thread earlier, but the main reason why I propose a full karma cost over an idea like this is that this would make WvW too profitable to do and would take priority over other money making measures. This in turn would likely see a huge influx of level 80’s to WvWvW for the wrong reasons, increasingly que timers dramatically.
In addition, you would have to ensure this currency would be restricted to WvWvW, which wuld essentially make a third currency. Its a nice idea, but I dont feel it would be a realistic solution without causing too many issues.
Although I appreciate this isn’t the case for every realm out there, one of the main issues I’ve seen with WvWvW is that people on our realm and certainly on some other realms do not purchase upgrades for keeps or towers after they have been captured. Having spoken to people as to why upgrades are not purchased the answer has usually been the same.

Given the extensive gold sinks in this game (Costs of repairs, teleporting, purchasing materials, cultural armour etc) there is already sufficient ways to take money out the economy without W3 remaining part of it. Further to this, because of the rate that karma can be accumulated people will be more willing to invest in WvWvW efforts as opposed to gold investments, especially given that gold is significantly harder to accrue en masse.
In addition, unless you’re going for legendaries, karma usually ends up being hoarded with no real purpose. By changing this system your providing another long use for karma. This is especially useful considering your objective of making WvWvW into 2 week long battles whereby extensive siege equipment and upgrades will become more and more crucial to securing and defending keeps/towers.
I understand that WvWvW is supposed to mimic a long term “war” where financial management can be a deciding factor, but given the issues currently faced by WvWvW I believe this change would help alleviate some of the issues and actually help bring about a change of attitude from “zerg all the bases” to “take and hold.”

At the moment in underworld we’re fighting two french servers at the same time. Ever since the reset the only times they have ever attacked each other has been after we have been pushed off the map. There’s absolutely no enjoyment to this. See below.

Underworld is currently up against 2 French servers … guess what happened to us.
Yeah im from underworld as well. We somehow appear to have been matched up against Arborstone and Jade sea. According to following thread :

Arborstone are rank 4 in terms of wins, jade sea are rank 19 in terms of wins are we’re 26. How is that even remotely fair or possible. Currently they have all the main keeps in the borderlands reinforced and locked down around the clock. It just feels like theres absolutely no point trying to do anything, not that we havn’t already tried and just hoping for better luck in next weeks matchup.
WTB explanation please.
EDIT: Correction, apparently Arborstone are rank 12 based on newer information. But still, how are we being matched up with a server 12-13 ranks above us. Doesnt make any sense.
