Actually I’m beginning to greatly dislike aerial skill #5. I’m dying more to it when I bump into ley lines that are sometimes difficult to see, or I have the camera turned a different way. If I could remove it from my skill bar I absolutely would. Regret buying it as is.

Karka Queen - most frustrating boss ever

I wouldn’t say most frustrating, certainly a really weak boss. Considering her rewards, you’d think she’d take a bit longer, but she lasts less time than Shadow Behemoth, which is saying something. So I agree, they need to make the fight last longer than 30 secs, and have at least some pause in between securing the settlements and actually spawning. Sucks to be the guy securing the last settlement only to have the spawn be in the center of the map. Anet, throw that guy a bone and give him 30 seconds to run across the map.

Even after the fix, Verdant Brink still bugged for me. I actually got rewards by zoning into the affected map. VB though was a no-go. Only one of the 6; Silverwastes, DryTop, Auric, TD, DS, all good.

Gertrude Reappears in Tangled Depths

I was curious to know what this is all about. Last we saw Gertrude she was with Minister Merula and Baroness Jasmina in Verdant Brink. But I ran across her in the Tangled Depths in the SCAR Bivouac, but no Merula, Jasmina, nor any nobles or even humans for that matter. Unless this is a different Gertrude, does Anet have a plan for our intrepid maid?

Is P/P viable for PvP?

Just starting experimenting with p/p myself. I find it easier to use than kits. Like most said here, the majority of your damage will be with burn. That being said, there is plenty of survivability built into a pure elixir p/p build in midrange sPvP (bear rank) against most players I’ve gone against. I’ve traited firearms, alchemy, and inventions. Took the two pistol oriented and burn trait in firearms, the two middle (survivability) and HGH traits in alchemy, and smoke bomb-mecha legs-bunker down in inventions. I use a rabid amulet instead of a rampager for the extra precision and toughness. I can’t make up my mind on runes, but generally you’ll stick to extra burn duration/condi damage; balthazar, flame legion, or go with undead (highest condition stat I’ve been able to achieve). Don’t forget to stick a sigil of smoldering on your offhand pistol (though not sure it makes a diff). Then get some utility potions; S, R, U are great for a variety of situations. But I have run into some brick walls against certain classes, ele’s, mesmers to name a couple. So for higher sPvP or WvW, I defer to others.

As an aside I’ve been trying to find a viable elixir gun build and discovered that weapon skills 4 and 5 actually count as elixirs for purposes of HGH. Been playing since release and never realized :|

Paying for past content?

in Living World

Paying for past content appears greedy. Particularly if it was offerred without charge previously.

You now have content that is gated via real currency (gems), with no alternative method of acquirement. Whether people realize it or not, in-game gold represents real money, since it can be exchanged for gems which in turn can be purchased by real money. The 200 gems you acquire via in-game gold DO have a dollar value ($2.50).

To those that could not or did not login to “unlock” the content, its reasonable but ultimately fallacious to assume they could spare the 5 minutes to login. There may be a myriad of reasons a person would not login during the unlock period. And its safe to assume in almost every case, it would not be because the person wanted to avoid unlocking the content. People can still say its SOL for these folks, but remember that next time the shoe is on your foot.

Regardless, the arguments that the content is free if you login during the 2 week time the content is considered permanently unlockable are irrelevant to the discussion. The fact of the matter, is Anet is charging for that content now. Free content would be free all the time regardless of circumstance.

To those that think Anet is under no obligation to offer LS content or any content for free, you are absolutely right. But they have a large incentive to do so, and reap arguably big benefits. Content updates, including LS content keeps the game fresh and players engaged. There is no guarantee a person playing the game will spend money in the cash shop, but there is an absolute guarantee that a person not playing will not spend money in the cash shop. So Anet could stop offering content, but would only hurt themselves by doing so.

Frankly, I think it would be reasonable to allow people to progress episode by episode without charge, much like the personal story that is “unlocked” with purchase of the game. Imagine a person did not login during the Dragon Reach unlock periods. Its somewhat absurd that he would not be able to freely play those episodes, but could freely play the beginning and end of LS season 2.

To summarize, basically Anet is selling a DLC without calling it so. Some people are fine with that sort of thing. Me not so much, especially since they are not selling the story as a whole, but pieces of it. Like selling chapters of a book instead of the complete book. Appears miserly.

In the end, $ will decide things. If Anet makes plenty of cash on their actions, there is little reason to think they will change tack. Lots of things can happen between now and the expansion, though.

WASD Alternative keyboard schemes

Never used this system myself. I suspect many do only because it has become something of an industry standard, like car cup holders. But I’d love to hear your reasons for using WASD.

I myself use a very unique scheme. Guess it would be SpaceFGJ. I rest my left hand right in the middle of the keyboard using Space to move forward, F/J to move left and right, and G to move backwards. I use the H key for jump. Turned to this scheme a long time ago as it felt like there was a lot less strain on my fingers reaching over to various keys.

Thumbs don’t seem to do much in WASD, and it doesn’t do much with my setup either. They used to make spacebars a lot longer though, without the windows and menu keybinds on the right side of the board, so now my thumb has to stay a bit tucked in, otherwise its natural position would be over the alt-key.

I find I got plenty of single bind keys broken down below by finger, where * is the at rest key, and * * indicates a binding that requires a bit of a stretch away from the resting position:
Pinky – F*, R,D,V, 4**
Ring – G*, T, B, 5
Middle – H*, Y, N, 6
Index – J*, U, I, K, M, 7**, L**, Comma**
Thumb – Space*, R-Alt

Other keybinds require a complete repositioning of my hand, but as most keyboards have guides for the F and J keys, I find it relatively easy to get back to my start position.

In all I have about 10-12 keys I can use for action bar bindings. I do only have the one modifier key in range, RAlt, but I don’t normally use a modifier a lot during a fight, and tend to set action/abilities that are seldom used or have high cool downs to the modifier.

This setup does require the pinky to do a lot of work I admit, so I tend to choose bindings that are less frequently used to fatigue it less. Nevertheless, its not uncommon for me to give my pinky a bit of a massage after an intense gaming session. Otherwise my most repetitive actions are handled by the index, middle and ring fingers, in extension to hit T,Y,U,I,K or contraction to hit B,N,M. These are very natural keystrokes, that do not put my fingers in awkward or stressed positions. ‘6’ is also is a pretty natural keystroke in this setup.

If you’re like me, the ring and middle finger feel more comfortable when moved in tandem, and this setup tends to be less punitive if you decide to move them in tandem when hitting the T/Y or B/N keys than trying to hold a finger down for movement, as I think the WASD setup has you do with the middle finger, which has to be held down in place during run and gun scenarios. In fact using the thumb to move forward, liberates a lot of movement for the rest of your fingers in general.

I have found that the oversized keys (Tab, Enter, Backspace, etc) on the keyboard are still pretty easy to identify by touch and use, though it will require me to completely move my hand and thus lose all movement abilities, so they are best used while in a stationary position or on auto-run with mouse steering. Getting back into the rest position is aided by the aforementioned F/J bumps.

Finally, and this may just be because I’m so used to the setup, I find it pretty easy to glide my hand over to the natural keyboard position of ASDF, where I can use several more keys in range, while still moving. For example, when possible I bind Quests to Q, so I can bring up the Journal/Quest log while traveling to my destination.

Anyway that’s my wierd setup. How about you guys, do you have any unique alternatives to WASD, and if not, any tips for using a WASD keyboard setup?

Moa racing should NOT be part of the meta

Can also confirm that your bird needs to place 1st for the achievment. Some quick and probably inaccurate math, means you spend 7.5g for 15 races to get 3 wins. If you figure you’ll also win 2nd (60s) 3 times, and 3rd (20s) 3 times, and nothing the other times, You’ll earn 6.6g for a net loss of 90s.

Of course if you’re like me, that won’t be the case, and you’ll end up in a 7.5g hole for about 2 victories worth, even when betting on the same horse.

A big “golfclap” to Arena Net.

I love the Moa races! Give us more races!

Bottom line is you lose money on this mini-game. That money is either time-invested or real money invested thru the gemstore. And if you feel compelled to do the achievements or acquire the dragon wings, you are forced to spend that money. So I will fervently disagree that ANET puts in more racing that has this compulsory element to it. You want to stick out in Ahsford, fine doit, but leave it out of yoru special events. That’s my opinion on the matter.

Zergs and AoE: analysis & suggestions

Have to agree with those for removing or increasing AoE cap limit. I can understand why Anet made their initial decisions, but its having adverse consequences. Like clockwork, at coverage times where my server has had about a 4:1 maybe 5:1 disadvantage in numbers, we’ll have the top server roll in with numbers, barely there siege (maybe a golem, maybe a couple rams) and barely there effort, come in and capture an inferiorly manned, but otherwise well equipped keep. They literally just run up to the gate and attack, hardly even bothering with destroying or even attacking siege on the fringes of the walls unless its one or two guys doing their own thing. I seriously wonder what incentive the prime time players have in upgrading anything knowing they will lose it overnight. What’s ridiculously ironic is that our AoE (siege/player) has less effect on them, than their AoE splash hitting the gates. You try and repair and its instant death.

I firmly believe a relaxation of the AoE caps would go a long way in removing the need to match a horde with a horde. A 10-15 man group should be able to defend a keep against a group of 50 ragtag invaders, and if not it should be challenge to the invaders, not a walk in the park, 10-15 minute affair.

Lower the cost of Tier 3 Cultural Armor

I question the validity of some of these “casual” player claims. Personally I’ve logged over 1000 hours in 7 months (roughly 5 hours of gameplay per day). That to me is hardcore gaming, but I’ve approached the game very casually. I don’t farm, don’t play the TP, and just do fractal/dungeons as the mood strikes. In all that time I would say I have spent about 50g, and currently have about the same amount on hand. I would define a casual player as spending less than half that, maybe 2 hours or less per day on average in game. So that being said, its hard for me to believe that earning and saving the 119g you need for a full cultural set without resorting to farming or Trading Post arbitrage is within a true casual player’s reach.

And frankly I think looking good is most important to people who play casually, those Moms and Dads out there that can’t devote the time and energy into their gaming. Hardcore players, myself included, are normally about the raw stats and perks. There are many other ways players with gold, time, and expertise can distinguish themselves, cultural sets don’t have to be one.

I’d lower the price on tier3 by around 50% to 60g, announce it a month in advance and not refund players who have already purchased theirs (maybe offer them “feats”, titles, points, or whatever to assuage hard feelings). That still is a jump of about 8-9 times the price of a full tier2 (7.1g) for people who feel tier3 must remain a luxury. Moreover, you can buy the big ticket items at 15g or smaller ticket items at 6g, a month or two of work for casuals in my opinion. Result: many more players feel more engaged and motivated to save and complete their sets.

Time and effort still needs to be made, but you avoid the dissuasion from seeing the half year you spent in game adding up to less than half of your needed gold. Take that from personal experience. I gave up on cultural armor when I hit like 25g. Happier for it, but will always regret I couldn’t get one (though maybe not, the tier3 human male medium set is pretty meh).

Allowing temp server alliances, so W&W vs W

in Suggestions

I’d like to see temporary, as in an hour or two, alliances be implemented that would allow only the two losing sides in a WvWvW battle, to ally themselves by force, as in turning each other’s respective server ‘friendly’, so they’d have no choice but to gang up on the current leader of a WvW fight. More often than not in these fights I see one dominant server get off easy because the other two servers are too afraid to attack because then they would then get double teamed. I thought the purpose of having 3 servers instead of 2 was so that no one server could dominate. Human nature being what it is though, all it takes is a small lead, and most servers seem to either attack the other losing realm, or are busy retaking their territory.

Forcing the two losing servers to go friendly would be just one way to make them attack the alpha dog. There could be others. The way the system is working now though, you have a scorpion/turtle fable repeating nightly. Cripple the other trailing server in order to gain short term point boosts, while giving the Leader long-term advantage.

I suggest a time limit so that the battle doesn’t devolve into WvW. You’d have to implement a cooldown as well, say the same or double the amount of time of the alliance to prevent the same WvW scenario. And it would have to be approved only by a majority vote of both server’s participants, though triggering it could be done in a variety of ways. Maybe just by commanders, maybe a certain portion of the map would have to be in the leader’s hands, maybe by certain point differential thresholds.

From personal experiences on Stormbluff Isle, which has been to either extreme these past few months, its neither fun to own the entire map nor to own nothing on the map.
