Warriors' Shield is Underwhelming

Simply put, when compared to every other shield-wielding classes’ shield skills, the Warrior’s shield skills are borderline laughable. The only way in which they can become remotely close to other classes skills’ usefulness is if you were to take the ‘Shield Master’ trait to add a Might application upon blocking, and reflecting projectiles.

And even then, ‘Shield Bash’ remains unaugmented and deals pathetic damage with an admittedly reasonable Stun – yet on top of this, both skills have a cooldown time that is the same as (or more than) Guardian and Revenant shield skill cooldown times yet with less than half the functionality. Engineer and Mesmer though, are more balanced since despite their skills doing a lot more they’ve got far longer cooldowns times.

Here’s some examples to illustrate my point;

Guardian Comparison

‘Shield of Judgement’ provides a block and applies both Protection and Aegis to you and up to five allies. For the same cooldown time, ‘Shield Bash’ does meagre damage and stuns for 2s.

‘Shield of Absorbtion’ pushes enemies back and absorbs projectiles, and heals allies upon second cast. ‘Shield Stance’ simply blocks incoming attacks for 3s.

Revenant Comparison

‘Envoy of Exuberence’ is probably the silliest one, it has 10s less cooldown than ‘Shield Bash’, the Warrior equivalent, and yet has a heal and repeated Protection application. Once again, ‘Shield Bash’ does meagre damage and stuns for 2s.

‘Crystal Hibernation’ is downright insulting in my opinion, having the exact same cooldown time and Block duration as ‘Shield Stance’ and yet also providing Regeneration on top of this? What’s with that?

By now I’m sure you get the picture.

Something HAS to be done to make the Shield more than just an occasional block for big boss hits in PvE. Not just to simply balance it against other classes’ shield skills, but to make the Warrior’s more interesting and functional.
I don’t claim to have all the answers but having mained a Sword & Board Warrior since release, I think by now I’ve got a good feel of the class.

My Idea

Now despite my lengthy justification for wanting these changes, my suggestion isn’t actually all that complex. Since I feel I understand the design philosophy behind the Warrior, it’s an offensive, primarily melee class, that’s why giving them a Protection application would be unsuitable, or even Aegis – they simply wouldn’t make sense like they do for Guardians and Revenants.

No, a mighty Warrior knows the best defense is a good offense, and their Shield skills should reflect that (pun not intended) by making their foes less effective in combat rather than buffing themselves -

Shield Bash could have a Vulnerability application which would make it more comparable to other classes’ shield skills and their multi-effects, and synergy with the 2s Stun. My original idea was for it to apply Weakness, but having a Stunning skill apply weakness would just mitigate its effects since stunned enemies are unable to attack in the first place.
Shield Stance could apply Weakness to the foe upon hit, stacking higher with each successive attack, exemplifying the ironclad defense of the stalwart Warrior, and adding another layer of complexity to the skill. Enemies would have to know when to stop attacking, similar to abilities which heal upon being hit, and good Warriors would time their casts well when an enemy is using a skill such as a Ranger’s Rapid Fire, to maximise the benefits.

They could perhaps also be renamed to less generic sounding names too (Withering Bash & Ironclad Defense, respectively perhaps?)- any suggestions on that front, or constructive criticisms/suggestions regarding my post as a whole are welcome, as I know it’s not perfect. Thanks for reading!

TL;DR Warrior Shield needs a buff when compared to other Shield skills, I suggest giving Shield Bash a Vulnerability application and Shield Stance an on-hit Weakness appliction. Cheers.

The Elysian Knights

A very old Social Guild rooted firmly in Ring of Fire since the beginning.

  • Initially devoted to -
    Bringing together a group of helpful, social players that didn’t mind taking a few minutes out of their time to show someone how to get to a tricky vista, or giving profession advice based on experience.
  • Inspired by -
    The .hack// manga/anime series in exploring and uncovering everything Tyria has to offer, helping others along the way.

It’s time for a revival.

And so that’s why I’m here, to find some lovely new people to join us in our adventure. Though now we’re but a handful of players, I’d like to expand our little community with the goal of creating a close-knit social Guild, dabbling in everything Tyria has to offer, and helping people out along the way. Starting out focusing on socialising with no set events, as we grow things will become gradually more organised, but still at the core a social guild for social people.

Making sure that if forays into WvW are made, they’re done right and well, making sure nobody is alone. Also bear in mind this doesn’t make anyone more important than anyone else, it’s mostly for organisational purposes.

And so come one, come all, if you’ve ever not known where the hell a vista is, or you’re the sort to help others find POI’s.

If you just want to have a good time and enjoy doing a little bit of everything Tyria has to offer, with some fun, sociable people.

You could become an Elysian Knight and do half of those things.

And a thief shouldn’t be visible whilst performing finishers, because they’re thieves. They have cloaking abilities for a reason.

I think you’re misunderstanding – perhaps you mean Shadow Refuge can hide only 5 people? Because when a Thief class uses a cloaking ability, he/she vanishes for everyone.

Now for my actual response.
Mounts: How about using the search function before posting about something, and you’ll see there are so many threads about mounts already cluttering up the threads of actual value, post there.
Raids: ‘Raids’ already exist. Dungeons essentially fulfill that purpose, as well as the HUNDREDS of world events that lead up to bosses. You really should have done your research before posting on the forums straight away about something that either already exists or there are already a tonne of threads about.

No. YOU want mounts and raids. There’s also things called Asura gates, you should probably use them. Go from the Pale Tree to Lion’s Arch, and then from there you can go to the Black Citadel.
I don’t think I’ve read anything more uninformed on the forums since release.

Thanks! It really would make a lot more variety for weapons, and more personalisation without as much effort and time as some other things. It’s the little things that don’t take much time that really make a nice difference, it’s a shame they’re often overlooked.

After playing Ascalonian Catacombs multiple times through, and obtaining the Ghastly Sword, a thought stuck me.

After looking at all of the weapons, the majority are dilapidated and rusted for effect, some more so than others.

But, what if there were a consumable item, called a Whetstone perhaps, that one could use to polish and sharpen one’s old and rusted weaponry, restoring it to it’s former glory?

Because there’s no other place that old Ascalonian weapons and armor can be obtained, and they have a unique look to them, plus the lore and throwback to better days for Humanity, where weapons were as ornate as the Greatsword reward for example.

This ‘Whetstone’ would go for a much larger amount of dungeon tokens, and could potentially be added to other dungeon vendors for their weapons. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see a curved Orrian blade that wasn’t dripping and covered in barnacles?
Different Whetstones obtained by different means could be used for their individual weapon sets, to make it fair.

Anyway, just a small thought that would be a nice little aesthetic treat for those that enjoy cleaner, practical weapons

The future of Kryta

Hey, this is my first time posting on the forums, so I apologise if my post isn’t exactly up to par.

The basis behind my idea is that I really enjoy this image of Humans being a severely hampered and beaten back race, and I’d like to see them pushing back properly.
Right now, the Seraph seem to be severely outnumbered and outmatched in the fields of Kryta, and I’d really like to see content regarding the retaking of Kryta’s lands from the Centaurs.
This could tie in with more personal story quests, and perhaps going as far as to having another instance of Krytan lands (or just adapting the current ones to the purpose)

The main goals of this idea are as follows:

1 Retaking Kryta from Centaurs
Since Zhaitan has been dealt with, before moving onto Jormag or Kralky, I thought it would be nice to deal with some of the smaller, albeit large for humanity, problems that Tyria has that hampers them from putting their full strength into fighting the Elder Dragons.

2 Introducing horses/mounts
They won’t necessarily be much faster than normal players, keeping to ArenaNet’s goals of aesthetic focus, which have been hinted at subtly in some areas, and would level the playing field against centaurs.

3 Introducing a new Class
Since it’s been so long since release, it would seem fitting to launch a new class such as the Dragoon mentioned in another thread, which would tie in to the mounted combat addition.

4 Introduce new weapon types
Such as polearms, halberds and lances. I haven’t gone as far as to speculating how the aforementioned weapons would function and for which classes, but still these additions wouldn’t be that difficult to add into the game, and would add more variety – weapon choices are an extremely important and versatile aspect of player identity.

This could all be carried forward through a World Event like Lost Shores, themed around retaking Krytan lands for humanity, or perhaps even making peace with the Centaurs and absorbing them into the pact. Though this would involve replacing the Heart quests that involve the war against the Centaurs with suitable ones – though hopefully not making Krytan zones into a clone of Ebonhawke.

I know I haven’t really put that much detail into all this, but It’s a thought I had whilst browsing the forums and figured it was worth getting out there and wanted to know what everyone else thought.

Commander System

I agree entirely. I’m from Ring of Fire – and as I’ve been playing I’ve noticed a severe lack of communication alongside this.
People are just blindly following the commander icon, and the word “zerg” has been used in chat more times than I could possibly remember.
Let me give you guys an example to back up OP;
We were under siege in a tower – the enemy outnumbered us immensely and the only way we were going to survive was clever use of siege and blocking them at a chokepoint when they inevitably downed the gate, since it was the Breakout event. Our “commander” told everyone to jump off the walls and charge the siege.
Everyone that did that died.
I then told him my plan, that another commander (a competent one) had used in the exact same situation and succeeded – he ignored me and told everyone to rush out of the gates.

Everyone died, and we lost the tower.

This is one of many examples of the unacceptable and downright ignorant leadership some of us serious WvWvW’ers are dealing with.
They have no concept of tactics whatsoever, they don’t flank, feint, ambush, anything.
All they know how to do is mindlessly zerg.
