[EDIT] Please check the second post in this thread for a better workaround that doesn’t need a third-party app
So, one of the things that has bugged me the most by ArenaNets laziness and lack of support even on their wrapped OSX release, is the blue tinting of my screen when I play the game on OSX. It does not look that blue on my Windows desktop, and I have read in many posts that it is intended, but I don’t agree with it.
So I was testing out an app for eye strain at night called F.lux. I set it up and used it for a while. I thought I would see if I can game with it and loaded up GW2. To my surprise it overrides the blue tint on the game and lets me play with normal colors.
Below is a video I made of the software in action on the game. You will notice the tinting change a bunch of times.
If you use F.lux for purely GW2, you can launch it when you play, and turn it off after. And you don’t need to set the color to anything low, you can set it at the 6500k setting (non-tinted normal color profile) and it will continue to work. Only disabling or turning it off allows for the tinting to stick again.
If you also notice in the video, the game tries to re-tint when I go in and out of the game, but F.lux is solid and seems to fix it within a second.
Here is a link to F.lux: https://justgetflux.com/
Hope this helps anyone else that this bothers. I can now play with the same colors that I see on my Windows machine, which I believe are the intended colors.

Ya, as of Update 2, you just need to wait like 5 mins for the launcher to fix itself and let you login and play, the rest works fine and the game works good.

Ya, a Bunker build or anything high healing/high toughness can handle a Theif pretty easily. I have yet to lose to a thief, even ones that jump me, in WvW or sPVP

There’s something to all the Clerics/healing + defense stat + power buffing. Could any of you suggesting this type of gear setup provide an example of a Trait/Utility setup to support it?
This is somewhat what i run: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQJAqelsp6ZX3SdF17ISoHSogpWiUgZU2HFyVbB;T4AgzymEMJZS1kiJKbM2IsxajzGpNjNmlA
Though I made the mistake of taking the Apothecary set, mostly because it was cheap with the Karka shells (going for 60 copper when I bought 180), vs 15 silver for elaborate totems which you need 40 of. 6-8g vs 1g.
Otherwise the primary is to use Bombs to heal, and the Elixir gun Super Elixir. Fumigate if you need extra condition removal. Any elixir usages removes conditions from you with Cleansing Formula. All the Conversions let you keep your damage up. Toughness -> Power, Healing -> Power, and Vitality → Condition Damage. You can also get oils for Vitality and Toughness -> Power
This lets you do decent damage with bombs (radius + 10% in traits) while healing, removing conditions, and being an all around unkillable kitten.
I personally just got an Apothecary’s set, thinking I woudl be using my pistol/shield more with my healing setup. Turns out I should have gone clerics since I mostly use my healing bombs and super elixir. I rarely use my pistol. So the damage boost to Bombs would allow me to deal bette rdamage along with my high heals.
though I do have healing → power conversion, and toughness → power, so I am not too miffed. Also bombs apply conditions. Though my accessories will be clerics. That will help. just need to save up the mats to make all the stuff.
As a developer, I agree with Kirin and Xae. Communication needs to be improved from arenanet. And they need to reprioritize and reshuffle resources. If not, they need to get more resources. I am pretty sure they have the money to hire a few more devs and designers.
I also find it funny that Jon Peters regularly posts in other class forums (maybe not Mesmers, their’s seem just as empty as ours.) and never posts here.
Some of the excuses they have given have been pretty lame. Especially the Sync issue for that trait. Change the trait to be different make a easier condition on the 10% that doesn’t rely on latency.
The change is the fact that we now have a whole new zone.
Not going anywhere, but I do login less and less due to problems. I might make a Necro, but other than that, I really don’t think any other class can fulfill my enjoyment the way the Engineer does.
Tried 4 or 5 times, then said “nope, I’m’a farm some more candy corns.” Been happy since.
When I made this map I was HOPING that people who aren’t into jumping would do exactly this. They’d see a fun Halloween looking environment, maybe get to the first chest and snag a goodie, then be on their merry way. I see now it was a mistake to make the hardest jumping challenge in the game part of an in-your-face update like a holiday event. I’m not going to stop making difficult stuff like this, they just won’t be so prominent in the future. I honestly hate making people upset and have a very high level of empathy. So it’s been hard hearing all the people that are so angry, frustrated and sad because of something I’ve made. But it’s just another lesson learned.
I just want to say I loved the tower, but all the other people in it really made it very hard for me to complete no matter how I tried. But it is a great map, and I thank you for making it.
I am a norn and still have trouble with it. I have been trying since it was added. Primarily my problem is I am too reactive to others around me and they tend to mess me up. The tower is really fun, I just wish I could do it solo. Farthest I got was once to the leap of faith, but I was apparently slow, and landed in the goo. since then I had variable success but never the lap of faith, usually some cog, or 20-30 attempts at the beginning with some progress on one, then back to the beginning issues.
Would be much nicer if it was solo, I might be able to finish it.
Diminishing Returns only affects that popup reward that has the ToT bag, the materials, and the 10 slot bag (which becomes 5, then 3, etc ToT Bags)
chest pops up every time, you get loot from it every time.
I have to agree, when I first logged in yesterday, I had not clue where to go to do anything. I saw the PCGamer vid a few mins later and realized all the fun was in LA. Got there, ran around for a bit. No clue I had to even search for people with pumpkins over them, I ported right into the Mystic Forge area. I just sat there costume brawling until i asked myself if that was all there was. Did a search, found out to go to the center of LA, and to do the page thing.
No clue where to get the Weapon crafting recipes for the event. Opend 10 chests, and got nothign (dont expect anything out of 10 though). Had no clue that the gates were only in 2 zones and which zones they were.
Very poorly informed event.

Video Card: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
HDD: 256GB SSD
Screen: 13" @ 1440×900

FPS on Windows: N/A (never bootcamped for anything)
FPS on OSX w/ Wine: 20ish
FPS on OSX w/ GW2 Official Cider: 25-30ish
I have the same model, but with the i7, works fine for me, but I am on 10.8 soo i might have gotten updates to my driver.
There is no port to OpenGL, they are using Cider by Transgaming, which is just a very custom and fancied up Wine. They will get there. Once they get Cider stable, they can see if they can get Wine common working.
Thank you, the client runs smoother than on bootcamp

I am seeing a trend. ATI and Intel have great performance (I am getting 20+ frames on an Intel 3000 HD), while Nvidia is having kitten performance for many.
Hint to all: you can just copy your Win installation

DJRiful: seeing as Transgaming is just a heavily modified wone, it works very much the same in the way it wraps.
Well, the version constraint on it is 10.6.8 in the plist, now there might be an actual binary problem that might stop you though. Dont get your hopes up.
You are positive that you aren’t color blind right?
Yes I am quite positive I am not color blind. I will post the video later when I can blockout my usernames and such.
The funny thing is, it makes it worse. The colors are all wrong. I wonder if I can change some Cider settings to completely turn it off, or if its a compiled in feature.
Actually Vince, I am running it on a 2011 13" Macbook Air, (1.83ghz i7, 4g ram, Intel 3000) and i get 20+FPS on low settings. Runs far better than the current WIne/Wineskin/Crossover solutions.
Can data files from PC install be copied over?

Assume this means when you have the PC client version on your Mac. Can you also pull the GW2.dat from a Windows PC?
The GW2.dat is platform agnostic, you can pull it from anywhere. Just dont mess with the Exe. There seems to be a difference from the windows one.
Spurnshadow, you dont need to purchase a new client. You get your choice of client just by buying the game.
Log into your account, and download the mac client. Its like WoW, you don’t buy the clients, you buy access to the game, and the clients are provided for you with your purchase.
Why are min. specs higher on Mac than on PC?

I think it is temporary for the Beta, as they probably have performance issues to work through, they set a higher minimum so that there is overall better performance with the beta client for those using it.
I think it will go down once the final mac client comes out.
I am personally running it pretty fine on Low on my 2011 macbook air with just an intel 3000 and i7
Question: Will there ever be a native OS X version?

What specific, measurable problems have been experienced in this application by running it on top of this compatibility layer? Are those issues, in fact, caused by said layer, or is there a more optimal way to address the issue in the GW2 source code?
This exact question was asked of City of Heroes. The Cider wrapper causes crashes and memory leaks in no small capacity. Running the game natively under Windows eliminates those problems. The game’s performance also drops. Considering, again, that the exact same hardware setup produces better results on Windows than it does with the Mac port, the reason should be obvious. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, search for “Assertion failure” and “cider wrapper memory crashes.” Again, I’ve been through all of this runaround with City of Heroes. This is the exact same company and wrapper used there.
That is the problem. It is not the exact same company. ArenaNet may be owned by NCSoft but they are an independent studio, using their own technologies, and their coders are far better than those that worked on CoH. Different teams, coders, studio, and tech stack.
Second, ANet is supportive of writing their applications to work through wine and such. Even GW1 had patches that fixed compatibility when running it on Wine.
If the game is written well, they can make it work just as good. Don’t put the failures of a completely different team, entity and studio onto others.
Cider/Wine has worked with many games flawlessly with same performance. They can do that here too.
Second we don’t know how often Cider updates their Wine install. For all we know they are using Wine 1.1 and dont get all the awesome fixes in the latest 1.5.12. So we don’t know what Cider is using.
Worst case, ANet can work with the official wine, and use a wrapper generator like WineSkin to make their own wrapper, with their own custom build of Wine, or a updated wine with the fixes they want from the project to make it work.
Ive been running Wine 1.5.12 with GW2 on my mac, it works fine, some bugs, but they can be fixed. Though the Cider port is more performant and I got an FPS increase from the official Wine build.
If this works, you just saved me about a day and a half of downloading. Many thanks.
It works, I had a Wine install before, same setup, just copy over the DAT. Works from any GW2 installation on any platform.
I am currently running the new beta client on my 2011 macbook air with 10.8 on it.
There is a weird blue hue on the screen that GW2 runs on. I use the multiple fullscreen workspace feature of OSX, and when i switch back and forth between the workspaces, the hue changes. I get my normal hue everywhere else, but when I switch to the one GW2 is running on (fullscreen, or window. Its easier to see in Window), there is a hue change towards the blue spectrum.
I took a video with my phone, I can post that or email it somewhere. I just need to edit out all my personal details from the video.
any chance for similar Linux Client?
sry for stealing your thread Mac Users
Since Transgaming uses a very custom build of Wine, you can run GW2 in wine right now, it just isnt as clean and performant as the transgaming custom build.
I think the next step is for them to make their own Wine wrapper for Linux. It is the only way I can think of for them to do it.
That is a long term thing though, they need devs to actually spend time doing that, fixing bugs in the Wine source code, or doing workarounds in the GW2 source code.
I don’t see it happening any time soon due to the very custom nature of every single Linux distro. Unless they can compile to a common ELF file that will work across any distro, they would need to make like 6-7 version to handle all the popular linux distros, and their versions.
An upside, is we can probably turn on Mac Mode for the linux installs, so we get the cleaner launcher without the broken transparency, and maybe some other things that will help play on Linux using the mac mode stuff. There is even some custom settings for mac that might help.
Works pretty well on low settings on my macbook air. Good for a quick session if I have to play on my laptop.
i7 2011 macbook air with 4 gigs of ram, and an Intel 3000
I even already have a bug to report
I get an insane amount of tonics from the Black Lion chests, and I do want to keep them for later use, but they take up so much room in storage.
Can you add them as a collectible like Minis, so we can store them there, instead of our already small bank?
Yer, mines idling right now at 47C 45 mins after GW2 sesh. Annoying thing though where my left hand sits whilst controlling the WASD buttons it gets really hot, must be where the motherboard is?
Thats where the video card chip is. Its usually put right under the top-left corner of laptops. So in most computers, the top-left corner gets hot when playing games. That is usually the side your vent is on too.
Actually guys, for the i7s, those are normal temperatures. Every i7 machine i have runs in those ranges with stock cooling and air flow. Desktop, laptop, etc. Lowest ive seen mine every go was 48 on my laptop. When gaming on my Desktop or Laptop, it goes to 75+ usually 80+. Also for laptops, as long as its not over 100C they are fine. Laptops get hotter than desktops due to space constraints, even with proper cooling.
My desktop is currently idling at 53, on a cold morning, completely open, and properly ventilated. I even changed the Thermal on it 2 weeks ago. The old one had cracked and i was getting 70 idle, and 90 gaming. those are high.
