How exactly do I play an engineer (PvE)?

@Reuxvnoir, Aristio:
Did anyone of you actually read the OP??? he asks for a leveling build and is lvl22. Posting terrible lvl80 Builds is no help at all.

@OP: Power/Rifle is the way to go. A Single Mob, even veterans shouldnt be able to reach you due a lot of controlling with your rifle and bomb kit. Its all about positioning, Auto with rifle pierces, thunderbluss&Jumpshot is AE.

@blutstein: Yeah, level 80 builds are great and all, but when you’re level 22 you don’t have the gear or the trait points to really replicate them. So posting them is a bit counterproductive, although it can give a goal to move towards later in the game.

@OP: blutstein’s build is something you could probably work with just fine, I see a lot of Engineers that run builds similar to that. If you don’t like the rifle though, or just want to try something a little different, then I would recommend a Pistol/Pistol build using Elixirs, which is how I leveled.

Basically, toss 10 points into Firearms, which will net you +100 Precision, +100 Condition Damage, and the minor trait that gives you a 30% chance to cause Bleeding for 3 seconds on critical hits. Then I would recommend taking VI – Hair Trigger as your major trait, as this will decrease your Pistol/Rifle/Harpoon cooldowns by 20%. Lower cooldowns is a great way to quickly increase your capabilities in the early game, as it means that your skills are now up 20% faster, thus letting you do more damage and toss out more conditions (Poison, Confusion, Blind, Burning, Immobilize and Cripple, if you’re using P/P…and that’s not including the Bleeding caused by your 1 skill).

Then throw the rest of your points for now into Alchemy to get Hidden Flask (Drink an Elixir B at 75% health, giving you a ton of helpful boons) and II – Fast Acting Elixirs (Elixir skills recharge 20% faster). It’ll take you till level 30 to get that, but in the meantime it will add some Vitality and Boon Duration, and eventually allow you to apply a lot more boons that last for a lot longer.

The reason I like this build is the play style. You can get four Elixirs in your toolbar this way (I use B, U and C, with Elixir H as my heal), which allows for a lot of buffs. Your Pistol skills work best when changing you distance to your opponent. Your 1 and 3 work great from range, whereas your 2 and 4 work great up close. 2 because you want to make sure all your shots hit, and 4 because you get a bigger Burning duration out of it. Your 5 skill can either be dropped at close range while you retreat back to medium range, or at medium range to keep an enemy from closing to melee. Honestly though, it seems like a bit of a weak skill to me, so I forget to use it most of the time. Circle strafing + dodges does a pretty good job of keeping you out of enemy reach.

With the Elixirs you can pop B as soon as the fight starts (Grants Fury, Might, Retaliation and Swiftness), H as needed for either the heal or the random boon, U for the Quickness buff (works great when you’re about to drop your 2 skill, since the whole things unloads VERY fast, giving your enemy less time to mess up your shots) and C to cleanse conditions as needed. You could also use S as a stunbreaker or escape skill in place of U, but until you get Condition 409 C is a bit of must have.

So basically, if you want to be a bit more active and in the enemies face while throwing around conditions and boons like candy, this build works quite well.

Your 3 favourite traits?

1. Incendiary Power – Extra burning is great!
2. Napalm Specialist – Burns last longer!
3. HGH – Adding stacks of Might to my normal exlir bonuses is great, and with Cleansing Formula 409 (technically cheating, since that’s 4 traits) it gives me the incentive to pop and drop elixirs constantly.

BTW, a similar thing applies to the skins. I have 61 Ugly Sweaters that I can sell for 31 copper a piece, for a total of about 18.9 silver. Based on current prices for the skins, you could probably get one of each for about 24 silver total…and it’s only that high because the Princess Wand itself is 10 silver. So you can buy pretty much every skin for that price, even though it’s not even enough sweaters to buy a single skin from the vendor.

They didn’t nerf anything. I just made 2 tonics with 5 tries.

Unfortunately I gambled all my tonics and got a useless accountbound back. Yay for RNG.

Consider yourself lucky. One look at the inflation in the price of Magic Glue and Stuffing suggests the overall chance of success as much lower than what you experienced.

No, not really. While I admit 2 tonics with 5 tries is quite rare, the reason why the mats are so high priced is because;

1. More people are finding out about the endless tonics = more demand
2. More people are finished the dungeons and cant get any more glue or stuffing from them = less supply

Yes, it’s elementary that the price would go up. I’m not talking about the directionality of the shift, but its magnitude. If you assume that 1) every player gets 1250 total of a combination of glue/stuffing from doing the five runs, and 2) not everyone cares about getting the full 5 tonics + 2 pets, the current demand graph is much higher than it would be if the success rate was about 1 in 2 or 1 in 3. The first several hours people learned about the tonics, failure was the exception whereas now it seems to be the rule.

BTW, just a note, “less supply” is incorrect if you look at the supply chart. Supply is up, so your point #2 is irrelevant right now.

Yes, I would agree with you. Furthermore, it’s due to the low rate of success that the price of the regular tonics is bottoming out. Do the math…

Once you have your endless tonic, any temporary tonics you have are now essentially worthless. Say it takes 20 tries for someone to get the endless version, that means the following:

20×50=1000 glue
20×50=1000 stuffing
19×3=57 temporary tonics (19 because the 20th is your endless)

So, you need 1000 each of stuffing and glue, and end up selling your remaining 57 tonics because you don’t need them anymore. Since anyone else who gets an endless tonic version doesn’t need the temp tonics either, there’s less demand than there is for the stuffing and glue.

The current prices in the TP are 62 copper for the glue and 61 for the stuffing. Which means to get enough supplies for 20 tries it will cost 12.3 gold. The most expensive temp tonic is the Toy Griffon Tonic at 31 copper. This means that for 12.3 gold you could buy about 3,967 temporary tonics. This is broken economics at work….

TL;DR – Sell your leftover stuffing/glue for about 75 silver (assuming a low sell price of 30 copper) and buy yourself at least 241 of the tonic you’re after (that’s assuming you’re after the Griffon, which is the most expensive). This is more than you’re probably going to ever use.

200 Cogs?

It might have been a solution to help those who got hit with the diminishing rewards issue when running the toy events. 200 isn’t enough to let someone make 3 mini pets, but it is enough to make up for someone that was, say, 100 short.

Yes, you wouldn’t be able to use the level 80 items, but you would be able to sell them on the TP and actually get some money.

Yeah. I got one exotic sword that I might be able to get a gold for on the TP, the other three items will fetch about 40 silver tops. I was level 63.

Edit: Although, I will say that at least the upgrade slot item was level 80. Everything else was 60 though.

XP and drops bugged

The only XP I got during this event was from rezzing other players, and a couple kills when walking back after porting. Enemies in the event weren’t granting hardly ANYTHING.

Literally (and I stress that I truly mean literally) the only two drops I got were a white Acolyte Cowl worth 33 copper, and a Vial of Thick Blood. Over a TWO HOUR EVENT.

I broke every piece of armor I had, and ended up with an 8s repair bill, in addition to all of the 97 copper ports. Sure, the end drops were nice, but I’m probably gonna have to sell one of them in order to make up for all of the repair and porting costs! What the heck?
