Oh, thanks! That would help a lot if you don’t mind doing a duel session, what name should I add in-game though? The username that’s shown on the forum?
Oh yeah, I already watch videos from this guy, he’s really good, the only problem it has is that the videos where you can truly learn are those where he duels but in none of them he commentates anything, if he could, after showing the duel, slow down the video on the important parts and explain a couple of things it would be exactly what I’m searching for.
I see, so 1v1 arenas are a bad place to search for advice, good to know hahaha, it’s a shame since just a couple of tips from those players would have helped a lot but it seems that I’ll have to do this alone by trial and error during a long time, anyway, thanks for the help, it’s nice to see that there’re friendly people in the game.
I’m playing S/D Thief and I can’t seem to find any guides or videos where it’s explained the basics of a 1v1, looking around I found a custom match called “1 v 1 arena” or something similar to that, long story short people there where really hostile no one I whispered wanted to even give me a single tip. Maybe some of you who surely are more experienced than me know where I can find this kind of information.
I’m aware that SPvP it’s not based on 1v1 and that there’s some match ups I won’t be able to win 90% of the time, a clear example of that is a DH, but I would love to know how to act on those scenarios whether is while I’m playing WvW or in SPvP where I have no other choice but to engage on a 1v1, if it serves of anything the profesion I’m currently having most trouble is D/P Thief.
Ah, that must be it, when I spam my keys it must count them as maintaining the key pressed hence the auto spam.
I see, for me it seems more of a bug than anything since if I press the key, even if it’s one time, during a cast when it finishes it casts it again, I guess I’ll have to get used to it.
When I play I instinctively spam my keys even if I just want to use them once, on other MMOs if you stop spamming before the casting is done you just use the skill once but when I’m playing GW2 if I spam my keys there’s always a second cast of my skills, I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced that or if it’s just me, I’m playing Thief and it gets annoying since I waste all my initiative for nothing when this happens
If you look it for total healing yes, healing 400 HP each second is nice, if you look it on a real scenario in my opinion is not good, yes, if you dodge every second for a while you’ll recover quite some health but at least from a PvP stand point you need burst healing to survive, it doesn’t matter if you can recover 4k HP in 10 secs if you’re going to die in 1, that’s why increasing the healing even if you increase the cooldown makes it relevant, it makes you get out alive from some situations where you should be dead, it’s a pretty good deal, impossible-to-keep-up sustain for survivability.
Yeah, that’s also a possibility, instead of healing give that trait another use, that isn’t a bad idea either.
Hahaha, yeah, it basically does that on PvP, on PvE which I don’t play much I suppose it serves for sustain on big AoE battles or vs a large group of NPCs but even with that 400 HP heals having HP pools higher than 18k it’s unnoticeable.
If you’re going to use Channeled Vigor for Endurance either you have full HP and you don’t need the passive or if you do it for HP you healed enough where that trait is not needed anymore, for Signet of Agility it should be used as a last resort escape so 400 or 800 HP aren’t going to save you.
Well, obviously it’s not going to happen, it’s not a severe problem, I prefer that they tone down Mesmer and Revenant first than to make this trait better but yeah, as with any change problems may occur, but by just increasing the heal to 1k-2k and the cooldown to max 10 secs I don’t see how it could go bad, maybe for PvE vs AoE heavy battles? But even with that passive and active recoveries should keep you alive no problem even with that change.

Just did a test, no vigor, no CDs, full Endurance, in 30 secs you have 6 dodges spamming (obvious thing since every dodge takes 10 seconds to charge), and since the trait says “when you successfully evade an attack” you don’t have to worry about poison/bleed ticks.
I agree that if it isn’t broken don’t fix it but why there are professions with decent/good Minor Master traits and there are others that are barely noticeable (DD isn’t the only one with bad ones), I see more healing with a longer cooldown like a good solution, of course, I’m speaking from a PvP point of view, from a PvE one where you can peacefully spam dodge systematically without any harsh repercussion it’s obviously better to have a lower heal for just a 1 sec cooldown, it the long run of course you heal more with the actual trait but I’m trying to make it noticeable when you play, I’m looking for burst healing, not total healing, I prefer surviving situations where I should have died that healing more in the long run, you can’t dodge when you’re dead hahaha.
Things without icd have a great potential to spin out of control.
Aaand I also dont think the game or our profession needs any more heals.
I would rather add a secondary effect.
It cant be initiative, since we already have that on dodge and DD doesnt need to become even more a replacement of acro then it already is.
Endurance would be an idea, to reward our opponents to stop spamming into our dodges and rather time their attacks. Then again it would make dodge spamming for us even easier.
How about instead of healing we get a stack increasing healing power.
So effects like assassins reward or our heal skills are much stronger if successfully evading a couple of attacks. That would lead to stronger synergy with acrobatics, make the traitline more viable on burst builds and promote good use of ressources.
It’s funny because the Acrobatics specialization of Thief has the Endurance bonus you talk about: when you evade an attack gain Vigor for 5 seconds. Healing Power I find it useless, at least on PvP where you heal at precise times and only with your healing skill so the current trait would be better in that case, I agree that without cooldown it would be OP but the second option was to improve our 1v1 game play in PvP since we could use an improvement.
Just run D/D or S/D so you can evade every second
As you can read on the first line of my post I use a S/D build, even with that 400 HP for every dodge is a bad trade, it’s a really valuable resource to waste spamming it.
I’ve been playing for around 4 months now, mainly in PvP with a S/D Marauder build which I’m happy with, however since I wanted to improve I played with each class to learn what they can do so I can battle against them better, but I noticed something when studied each PvP build for every class, the Minor Master trait for Daredevil, Driven Fortitude, plainly sucks compared to other specializations from the rest of professions, even Thief itself, if you don’t know what that trait does it heals the Thief every time it evades an attack, the problem comes when with a >17k HP pool it heals for 400 with a 1 second cooldown, on the other hand, the other professions have much better Minor Master traits that go from for example:
Furious Demise which gives the Necromancer Fury when it enters on Shroud mode being a nice bonus.
Transmute for Engineer which, as the name says, transmutes a condition to a boon with a cooldown of 15 seconds which is actually really nice.
Or Illusionist’s Celerity and Flow of Time for Mesmer that give 20% cooldown reduction on Illusions and Alacrity every time you shatter an Illusion respectively making them incredible bonuses that you don’t have to invest any point in them.
Keep in mind that 3 of those 4 examples used non-Elite Specializations.
I know I don’t have any power to change things but I would like to share how I think this trait could be modified to make it relevant:
Leave the healing value as it is but remove the cooldown, that would make sense from a lore point of view since it’s a DAREdevil which should survive really chaotic and risky scenarios, it would still be useless against 1v1 scenarios where the opponent (NPC or Player) hits you with single, powerful strikes, but it would make you survive much better on scenarios where fast consecutive attacks or a lot of AoE damage is dealt, the con of this option is that it would most likely heal the Thief for at least half of his/her total HP every time it dodged on a big team fight in PvP or in a big AoE attack on PvE making it broken.
The other approach I though of is one that I’m sure a lot of people have though, just increase the numbers, make the Thief heal for more making it relevant during the gameplay but with a bigger cooldown to compensate for the “buff”, I think that maybe a 2k heal with 10-15 secs cooldown should be nice.
So what do you think fellow players? Do you agree with my idea?

Thanks for the tip but I’m looking for advice of how to fight in a 1v1 scenario vs each class not about how to play in general, but again, I thank you for the tip.
You should never 1v1 as thief unless you have no other choice.
The problem with that stupid mentality is that people start to belive it, and how are thief players going to get better if that is all they think of ?
It’s not dueling or team deathmatch, it’s conquest. There are far better ways for a thief to get better and contribute than trying hard to fit other roles.
I know that conquest is not based on how many people can you kill but when I play Thief I feel like mostly every time I encounter someone alone I have to run away that’s why I wanted to know tips about 1v1 since in team fights things are more chaotic and I know more or less what to do in them.
Note: i thought about posting this before, but didnt due to the list being incomplete, and some tips simply dont work for every situation. Might even be plain wrong.
The most important thing in all fights, especially as a thief is to adapt your style to every oponent individually.
“Therefore, just as water retains no constant shape, so in warfare there are no constant conditions…He who can modify his tactics in relation to his opponent, and thereby succeed inwinning, may be called a heaven-born captain.”
-The art of war.Sd thief
vs
Warrior Our favourite tool is blind, you dont have too much access so you will be wanting to dodge insetad. Most warrior skills are relatively telegraphed, so that should not be a problem.
Outkite the invulnerabilities and specially the rampage. Keep your stunbreaks ready and, if the ymanage to stack some conditions on you, disengage.
They can quickly kill you if they got one good streak, so restetting the fight is the smarter choice.
Warriors lack in healing so take your time.
Id also recommend to maintain some distance between your assaults, infiltrators strike is your tool to go.Guardian Avoid them. If you have to fight:
Dodge all trueshots, dodge binding blade. Never get hit by a test of faith.
Trigger traps prematurely with dodges or shadowstep. Leave dragons maw asap, if you cant just use bandits defense or maybe try to use flanking strike. Maybe it travels not too much distance and lest you dodge without hitting the walls of the trap.
Never fight inside of traps. If you assault them, make sure you have some backup health because you wont go in or out without getting hit.
Put enough pressure on them to drop some defensive skills and get out before they move to offense.
Poke them with shortbow if they are on a melee weapon, but beware.Revenants Essence sap is very strong, be sure to hit them. Besides that madvisions video covers what you need to know.
Engineer tough fight. Avoid their passive pressure at all costs. Move in, damage, move out. keep shadowstep for slick shoes, if its one cd use bandits defense but dont move an inch. Only use projectiles if youre sure they dont have a reflect ready.
Try to preestimate when elixir s stops and immediatly put pressure back on. Hope to kill before they can reset. pretty hard with s/d tho I guess.Thieves A thief v thief fight can be extremely interesting. If you are defending you should try to predict the inital burst. Your opponent will usually use steal to engage, if you can dodge that, you have a big advantage.
Dont let them stick at you, keep distance. Their gap closer is a projectile that can be evaded, yours is instant. Dancing dagger is usually not expected and can deal suprising amounts of damage if sigils are triggered.
Dont get hit by shadow shot, stunbreak asap and keep them in the defense and you have a good chance. Also avoid black powder by any means necessary. The blinds can decide the fight.
If a high health thief stealthes, they will be going for a backstab, you can usually tell when it will happen and intuitively dodge it.
If a low health thief stealthes, you can spam some detonate cluster in the area or even choking gas if you think they want to heal.
Choking gas+cluster bomb is also nice, sonce weakness really hurst most thieves.Rangers Usually headshot is what they fear. You dont have headshot, so you will have some serious problems. Keep an eye out for the bristleback, try to take cover from arrows if you kite or disengage.
If you pressure enough for CA the first skill will be lunar impact, which will daze you. The second will be rejuvenating tides, and you will be wanting to interrupt it. If they are already on low health and you can deny this skill, they will be in trouble.
You also lack the typical leap finisher in the stolen skill. Instead consider cluster bombs in it if you are in dire need of health.Necromancer Engage and disengage on demand. They cant follow you, they cant really heal themselves. If they are not able to kill you in one burst, they are in trouble.
Reapers shroud you can either run away and wait, or you can outkite on point, most skills are very predictable. Their favourite heal skill is easily interrupted if you have some free cc, if you can predict it you can even interrupt it with the stolen skill.
Just make sure they dont hit you too much, keep a stunbreak for the big freeze and beware the minionmasters, they can be annoying because you cant keep track of all the minions.Mesmer Not much you can do here. A guard you can at least kite around or force to use some utility. A mesmer will just kill you 100:0. Even if you +1 and catch them off guard, you usually wont kill them. Its simply the strongest build for small scale combat. But you are slightly faster, so: just run.
And mesmers: if tomorrow finally gives us back the spot as your counter, im going to have revenge. And its not gonna be easy for ya.Elementalists Finally. Keep pressure high, safe steal for eath or water overload. Watch out for their cc. Theres not much trickery in fighting eles. You stick to them, and deal damage. They run away from you and heal. Either they die, or they dont. If youre in a teamfight, consider choking gas. The regular poison application is hard to cleanse and the healing effectiveness can really matter.
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, they’re explained from a thief point of view but it doesn’t matter, I feel like I can adapt it for other classes, many thanks!
Here is a tip for you: look at the kitten mini map!
Way to many players just zerg mid (especially on legacy) and do not rotate to stop a decap or to get a free cap on far. Watching the mini map is key to outrotating your opponents but players as high as diamond seem to have a blind spot on theirs for some reason.
Thanks for the tip but I’m looking for advice of how to fight in a 1v1 scenario vs each class not about how to play in general, but again, I thank you for the tip.
Well, this isn’t exactly what I was looking for since I was searching for some tips you can follow to beat every class but thanks anyway.
I’ve been playing for a while now and I tried to learn how to, more or less, play each class by reading guides and practicing with them, even with that, I feel like I lack some knowledge because of the lack of online content to learn from so I would love if any pro/veteran of PvP could give me general tips of how to beat each class, I know that each class beats others differently but there are some rules that can be applied in general, an example of that would be answering questions like “If I play vs a Mesmer should I break the clones/images or should I focus down the player instead?”.
If you need any extra information about my experience I’ve played WoW for around 4 years as a Rogue, currently the classes I enjoyed most are Thief with a Daredevil Marauder S/D build (though I didn’t like that it’s treated more as an annoyer/offensive support rather than an assassin) and Guardian with a DH Meditrapper build since it has a lot of burst damage and I liked his kit in general.
Thanks in advance fellow players.
Thief is a great 1v1 class, but different builds help different playstyles.
If you want to focus on 1v1 fights u can do it, or u can focus on supporting team fights with high burst by hit and run style, you will down enemies really fast.
However, thiefs are squishy, that being said, u should never ever be fighting anyone if u cant put smoke fields and restealths properly.
I was a good WoW rogue and a decend thief here in gw2, I have seen thiefs taking out 2 and 3 enemies constantly…. However, Thief learning curve is very high… but once u get it working it wont cange… u will be good using any build u want.
Dont get discourage by the meta… Meta is overrated imo…. if you wanna go serious with premades and voice comm or compete Meta is a must… but your skills as a thief and a build that fits your playstyle are a lot more important than a meta comp or a meta build.
At the end of the day, Meta builds are originated by creative players who tested many stuff and they came out with great builds that are later adopted by most of the community.
In my case I always use variants from meta builds that are switted for me….. I even have a non Meta guardian that is incredibly effective at team fights and 1v1s.
Anyway, if you wanna practice a few stuff, add me in game ill get on my thief try to identify what might be causing u troubles.
If you decide to go try another game, that’s ok Gl. current state of ranked pvp is a shame… however, Unranked pvp still nice and fun.
It’s obvious that my skill is a factor here, I was a great Rogue back in WoW but that was because I played 4 years with just that class, but I can’t have even fun in Unranked while I learn when I can’t do anything, for example, an hour ago I did a match, from out of nowhere a Ranger from a distance that I could barely see him starts shooting, in an instant 50% of my HP is gone, it took literally less than 0.5 secs for me to start dodging when I saw him yet I was half dead, I use Steal, after 1 sec of Daze (in which I did around 25% of his health) he proceeds to knock me down and him and his his pet kill me in less of a second without any way of getting out of that situation, maybe you can tell me what you would have done but I feel like either I take down people who are distracted or in an unfair match up (while they have low health or It might even get ugly for me) or every time I see someone I have to start running away without doing anything.
It’s not like I want to follow the meta as if it was a rule, but I won’t play with a class that doesn’t do anything (again, I’m sure that It has a lot to do with my skill but I can’t seem to find any successful Thieves, most of the high skill players use either Necro or Revenant and the others use a couple of other classes).
Thief isn’t really the best class to start with in PvP. It has a very steep learning curve, in order to play it properly. I’d highly suggest playing an easier class to begin with, like Necromancer, Guardian or Elementalist.
Like everyone else has mentioned, there are plenty of tutorials on the web, for learning how to play Thief. In the wrong hands, Thief can be the worst class in the game. In the right hands, however, the Thief can be a vital part of a team.
The key thing to remember about Thief is, you’re not playing to have 1v1s with people, or to go in arms flailing like a Warrior. You’re playing to make fair fights, unfair. If you see a 1v1, go and make it a 2v1. If you see a 2v2, make it a 3v2 etc.
A good Thief can keep the enemy team from keeping nodes, as the mobility provided by shortbow is incredibly good. It allows you to make a quick decap on a enemy controlled node, then get back to the team fight, or where you’re needed.
Make sure to learn when you should/shouldn’t engage with enemy players and your rotations.
Wow, you… you kinda broke my dreams here buddy hahaha, so a Thief is not a 1v1 class? Man, I’m used to the usual Rogue that most MMO (mainly WoW) have which is a 1v1 machine, high burst, lot’s of ccs but you’re really frail, according to your descriptions here the Thief is just a “teamplayer”, an offensive support if you will. So the only class I like doesn’t suit me it seems… Welp, now I’m completely lost.
Metabattle website for decent builds
Yep, there’s where I took my current build.
Watch videos, streams etc. One of the best tips I can give is play the class you want to play in pve, level it a bit, get a feel for the abilities. Helped me when I first stated the game!
I leveled up to level 80 before even trying to play PvP and I searched on YouTube for guides and such but all of them seem outdated.
I can’t even see what has killed me.
If you have problems understanding what killed you, I would suggest to first start and play every other profession, at least, a bit.
Learn what they can do and how it look like.
While playing every profession, start with the builds featured on metabattle, but don’t limit yourself to it.
Learn the icons in your and your opponents boon and condition bar (including the profession specific icons like Glint’s Heal from the Revenant).
You have to be able to identify the spec the mesmer is probably using just by looking at him (e.g. will he confusion-burst me?).
The thing is where I can learn that? The wiki is really confusing, I can’t seem to find anywhere else to learn the skills and traits of every class and every class has a lot of different variations.
Thanks for everyone’s help but I feel like this won’t work for me, it seems that quite a lot of people agree that currently the PvP is unbalanced and I won’t change class just because others are just plain better, I always play as the thief/rogue/assassin in every game I play and this will be no different, if I can’t play fairly just because I don’t stick to the meta then I’ll just play when the meta is better or more fair or not play at all, at least I tried it since it caught my attention, at the end I didn’t like it but this things can happen, I won’t get frustrated trying to make this work if I see it won’t hahaha. The only problem I see here is that I’m not sure if most of the community is really salty or if there is really a balance problem in this game so I’m not completely sure on what to do.
(edited by Espidow.1729)
Is it just me or this game has the worst PvP I’ve ever seen?
I know I just been playing for around 3 weeks and with a Daredevil which it’s not the best class out there but I can’t seem to be able to do anything unless the other players don’t have any idea of what to do.
When I saw that this game didn’t had PvP gear like other MMO I thought that it would be nice to finally play a game where you are equal to your opponent from the beginning but it wasn’t like that, almost everything is able to blow me up instantly from 100% to 0% if I can’t do a perfect frame dodge, I don’t know how they do it but almost every class I see recovers health like crazy or I can’t do any damage to them while I just have a roll that heals me every 20 secs for 40% HP or a trait that heals me basically nothing when I evade an attack.
I know that I don’t have much experience but I can’t find any place to learn from it nor I learn from my games since I can’t even see what has killed me. Maybe someone knows where I can learn to play PvP or what I have to do to play a Daredevil correctly, unless the PvP here is truly unbalanced, I’m sure that at least it partially is, It’s impossible that every time I do a match 2 or 3 classes, mainly Necromancers and Revenants, are always there.
