There was some other game I was playing some years back, don’t remember which, where you could marry certain NPCs, including same-sex ones. When asked about this, one of the developers replied that the world in which they live in is a violent, chaotic, short-lived world where your life could end at any moment from a dragon swooping down onto your villiage. In such a world, people saw same-sex marriages as no big deal because it meant spending what little time you had with whoever you chose.

I would imagine it’s something similiar in the GW2 world. Unless you’re part of some royal family who requires a bloodline heir, there’s too much other stuff in the world actively trying to kill you than to worry about the gender-pairings in someone else’s relationship.

I seriously hope that was a joke and you didnt forget that the game your mentioning is Skyrim….

Yeah, I prefer the word damp myself. Moist has sexual connotations that might be inappropriate for day to day use…..

Eh, I don’t think the term itself is offensive. It’s not really used in a pejorative sense unlike the “N” word.

Likewise, I’m Asian, and I’ve never felt offended by the term “Oriental” (in fact, I kinda like it. It sounds mysterious and exotic) or “Chinaman”. But if someone were to use it in a hateful tone towards me, that would rile me up.

You might not find Oriental offensive, but would you find the term “Mongoloid” offensive if someone called you it? It was used at the same time as Caucasian/Caucasoid. Most people don’t find it offensive but its still outdated and groups together many groups who are completely different racially.

You guys do know that Caucasians aren’t just white people? And it’s also an incredibly outdated and offensive term. It was coined with other terms which are completely intolerable in todays society, so I dont see why people keep throwing it around. It has nothing to do with skin tone either! Seriously guys, 5 minutes research….

Also, I’m “white” and there’s no good facial options for my people, not even in Norn….

My Necro is called Fionnlagh MacAuslen, which means “The Fair Hero, Son of Peace”, not a canon name but its my name in the old tongue and I like that. I suppose it all depends on if you care about having a canon name or not, I dont really so all of my characters have different variations of my name. The good thing about Gaelic is that there is just so many variations of every name in the language.

While I believe buddy above me is correct, it does not mean it isn’t interesting to discuss. Regardless of whether or not we come to a conclusion.

On topic, however, I did notice in one of the final scenes of “Entanglement” it does seem that Marjory is avoiding having Kasmeer meet her mother, which seems strange to me. She was rather insistent on the fact that Kasmeer “should stay with the group” oppose to comfort her. I got the “vibe” that Marjory was not sure how her mother would react to their relationship.

Now I dont claim to know whats going on culturally or in characters minds, the fact that she didnt want to introduce her to her mother might not be anything to do with gender. It could be for many reasons, the same reasons that straight couples in RL dont want to introduce their partners for fear of parental disapproval, whether it be occupation, tastes, views, looks, personality, background etc. Its still a good topic to discuss, though I dont think it adds any more depth to character than any other moral view does, its just a hot topic in RL societies today, 10 years from now people may think that something completely different is a good issue for characters to express views on.

I think the Same-sex issue in Kryta and in the world of GW2 has not really been fully defined or acknowledged. I believe that if Arenanet is truly serious about being inclusive then character creation needs to include the option of choosing the gender preference of the player character – once chosen it can never be altered like it is for a character’s race, social-economic status/upbringing and Order of Tyria affiliation.

This sexual identity should then translate where appropriate in terms of character dialogue in cut-scenes and in-game npc interaction/dialogue. Characters could be further customised in terms of emote options. An expanded emote menu would have a selection of emotes only available to pc that are identified as ‘Straight’ while those pc that have been identified as ‘LGBT’ would have emotes that reflect their identity.

The emotes currently available could continue unaltered. Taken together these suggestion will measurable enhance the social aspect of GW2 game-play.

If these suggestions where to be implemented then the rating of our game may well be affect. Thus I seriously doubt any part of this post will ever be seriously considered.

I’ll just start off by saying that is a terrible idea, this isn’t godkitten Second Life. This is a fantasy role playing game, fair enough you can role play your character any way you see fit, but the game doesn’t revolve around your characters sexual preferences. This game is about saving the world and having fun meeting new people, any individual’s sexuality is of no real consequence to any event in it. Secondly, you’re suggesting that someone’s personality is dictated by their sexuality, which is incredibly narrow minded. Whilst I admit that a lot of gay people (usually teenage boys) feel the need to make this a major part of their person, it usually stems from insecurity and as a shield against bigots. It is also nowhere near a fair representation of the majority of homosexuals (I don’t even like referring to them as a different group from straight people as we are all human, they could have the same moral, political and social views as anyone else, one little difference doesn’t make them entirely different). Thirdly, if we assume that the player base of GW is a fair representation of the population of the countries the game is played in (which it probably isn’t, but it doesn’t matter), you are suggesting a major overhaul to the game just to suit a minority of people, an overhaul that would require a ton of work and would barely impact the game overall.

The game glosses over many minorities in an attempt to make it generally inclusive to everybody, you just have to accept that games will never really cater to your group, or anyone else’s.

Who would win in a fight, a Charr or Norn?

I know everyone’s kind of left this but I still want my two cents. Granted there is more to a fight than strength, even though this is a major factor, there is also more to it than agility. The postures of both species show that the norn has a greater reach and static range than the charr. The norn also has a greater plane of movement and a better centre of balance, due to being always bipedal. A charr stand hunched, almost like it should always be on all fours, even when it isn’t. This seriously throws off a fighters stability. The Charr possibly has more explosive strength going forward but the norn has greater strength in practically every other direction. Now as to whether a Charr actually swings his sword faster? It’s all relative, a Norns swing may take longer, but with a greater reach and usually a bigger weapon, this swing will be covering far more distance in the time taken, therefore their speed could be very similar. The norn has the advantage of strength, range, flexibility and speed within certain planes. As for ferocity or skill? If this was a fight to the death between two determined fighters, ferocity won’t really play a part. Skill wise, the charr is trained to fight in an army, much the same as the Romans were, if we compare that to say, the Picts in Northern Britain, individually a pict could kill a legionary, but in large scale warfare the Romans would almost always win. This difference basically brought roman expansion to a halt. However, even at this, skill level is still debatable. It’s therefore my opinion that 9 times of out 10, a norn would win 1 on 1.

Do we really want GoT?

You’re just listing character development or suggesting mental trauma for the LotR characters, other than Frodo’s finger, and it was a complete cheeseball move that he lost his finger instead of sacrificing his life like all the foreshadowing lead us to believe he would.

Don’t get me wrong, LotRs is a great series that I loved as a child and I own all the movies, but literature has moved beyond that bubble gum cheese. If you’ve heard JRR talk about GoT, he says basically the same thing. He too loves LotR, but it should not be copied. LotR is black and white, GoTs is interesting.

We can’t go anywhere close to the extreme of GoTs for this game, but we can learn something from it. Anet is definitely not afraid to kill people, they do it constantly with brutal regularity. They just have to make sure it has impact for us. And I will be a happy camper.

No the mental traume wasn’t suggested for the LotR characters. Frodo was definetly scarred, he was never the same, kept having fits and periods of severe depression for years. Sam, Merry and Pippen all experienced traumatic events, and were regarded as “odd” and more “serious and somber” at times. I think we may see the same type of things play out with Marjoy. Either way I feel it adds more depth to the characters, and of course is more character development, which is important, and I felt was lacking a bit with season 1.

I agree, the mental scarring of all the LoTR characters is described in detail. I have read both series of books, GoT is actually quite disappointing but as far as LoTR goes, its far from black and white. The depth of characterisation, the struggles of Boromir, the political subterfuge of Saruman and Sauron, Saurons slow corruption of the once proud Denethor and his attempt at gaining the support of the Dwarves of Erebor, it outshines Martin’s work in every respect. Martin’s work effectively reads like a 14 year old boys wet dream. Hurr hurr knights, boobs, dragons hurr hurr lets kill them all now. He threw in so many storylines into the first few books that he doesnt even know where theyre going now, so much is practically just forgotten about, its such a letdown and I’d hate to see GW go the same way, whether you like it or not, it was Tolkeins work that kick started fantasy in pop culture.

I like Eldgrim, its cool, Greycloak is a bit weird but after seeing everyone elses names, mine doesnt even come from the same culture….. 8/10

Mine is Fionn MacCumhaill, the old Gaelic hero. Although in my defense, Fionn was the name the Gaels had for the Norwegian Vikings and I am Scottish so I’m allowed
