Why the hell not ?
I know this has never been done for gliding but since we’ll get sooner or later a 3rd world and a 4th, just imagine.
It’ll be a proper SAB mount type ofc!
I don’t have graphics to show how much players owning the expansion did or didn’t even do raid wings atleast ONCE, but its about time that devs know that its evident that its A VERY BIG PORTION of the playerbase that never experimented it,not even the story.
This is a very VERY big loss, as the raids in other games are intended to deliver LOOT but also story, in other MMOS we’re atleast given different scales of difficulty with different Drops, but in GW2 we have this litterally everything mixed within only 1 difficulty scale.
Many many and many casual players that clearly cannot improve over time even if you give them 10 years litterally are forbidden of experimenting raid stoylines, once they’re done with all story related stuff in the game they can’t even dream to taste that specific type of content.
the solution is very very simple, Just like dungeons.
Make 2 raid modes
-the first where you smooth the bosses mechanics just enough so players can go through with a little bit of effort of course, the drops will not get players legendary insights or ascended gear or anything like that, instead its gonna give very basic drops. and of course let it be once per character.
-2nd mode, the challenging one, Nowadays raids where they’re focused on high rate drops, Legendary armor collections etc etc…
This will make everybody satisfied hardcore players and casual ones.
Still Though We dont “need” mounts and they are not anything “new” enough to constitute expansion content worthy.
ofc they’re content worthy ! i don’t know if you saw leaks but they're all about new masteries Duh totally not like the traditional ones …

feel free to check FR / DE / ES GW2 discussion forums, link is there, i had a hard time posting it here as it doesn’t encourage discussion as the moderators say x).
I just hit on a UI inspiration from this.
Hit a keybind button, get a custom radial window that acts as a quick-access shortcut to frequently-used tabs. So instead of Hero window, sub menu, minis, click mini (and the little tiny box that should be much bigger or a separate UI element), it could be Radial Menu, mouseover to minis to open menu, select mini.
nice one ! , its just about making the access to usual stuff the smoothest possible.

OK, wow. This discussion. So, we already know that they have been working on mounts for the new expac and so they have literally dedicated man hours to a thing that has a very vocal minority in part no doubt because someone there at Anet realized that this could be a new revenue stream from new players as anet has also shown that they tend to care little about vet players in the grand scheme of things as those fonts of money tend to dry up quickly and new money is all they want.
That being said, if they make mounts exclusive to the gem store AND have them confer bonuses that affect movement/battle AND only available to expac owners, then they would have succeeded in making the game p2w. Furthermore they would have successfully made a bunch of people simply leave the game if they did this. For all the vocal people that want mounts there is a much larger base that still feel they are both horribly unnecessary and would frankly detract from the game/mechanics of said game and leave people that feel so many other aspects have been neglected to be even more annoyed that this dev time was spent on this new mechanic even though there has been such strong opposition to it.
So, does that mean that Anet might retool these elements, or maybe not even deliver something that is fully fleshed out? Most likely if past experience has taught me anything. This means that even among the mount proponents there will be a large number that will be less than satisfied and making a stink about them on the forums, further pulling dev attention to essentially a vanity item that will be added to a game to solve a nonexistent “problem” for a small subset of players that already have mobility buffs at their disposal. In short, mounts are a very bad idea, especially for this series as they have never existed EXCEPT for one NPC in GW1 and a few NPCs in HoT, but since its a bad idea Anet is going to jump on it and run with it.
i did a poll a few weeks ago about the potential addition or not of mounts to the game, didn’t even precise the ’as a new mechanic" but i left the feel of “traditional mounts”
1.6k people voted, that’s of course not enough(you don’t have to repeat it) ,but it was sufficient for me to have an overall picture, as the results were like 40% against , 60% with , now you can refute the truthfulness of the poll, but you can trust me i did what i could to keep it confident.
that was enough proof IMHO that indeed a part of the community doesn’t want to have them implemented, and that they can be really kittened off on the devs, if they do so.
but in another hand, the bigger part will in fact like them as a new addition to the game, and the ultimate argument is that new players can have some very unique visions of what mmos can be , and mounts are a part of it,so love it or hate it , it’ll be useful on the market especially for potential new joiners, so what you’re saying about how that its only the vocal minority that wants them is absolutely incorrect, because their presence will appeal more people to try the game.
now the detractors will have either to embrace it, even if anet goes with traditional mounts or not, or quit the game forever and ever, that’ll depend of their broad-mindedness.
it can be a part of the interface in a corner that we can hide/show.
for example :
-Minis , rather then opening the hero window and marking it , you can easily
select it by rolling their pictures/names.
-food & utilities , why not ? since we all suffer from inventory management, the fact that you have it on your inventory will show it directly into the “wheel” interface, and clicking it will enable its effect.
-town habits & skins.
-outfits may be but that should stay in the hero window because its still a cosmetic but that’re not changed that often or just needs to be optional to appear in the usual interface.
-this haven’t been confirmed yet, its still based on rumours/leaks but it still could be spoily so you’ve been warned, we can have them for Mounts for next expac rather then having 1 keybind for each type of mount, just roll the wheel and stop on the type you need
Since no other Masteries affect WvW, I would not expect the upcoming ones to.
i’m very doubtful about that but hey, you really don’t want to click on that if you’re not already well informed : leaks tend to show how mounts will concern large group healing with the skimmer, actual DPS skills with the raptor, high jumps , falling damage high decrease for jackal and propulsion & gliding features for gryffon, now that's actually very likely to stay in the new maps ...,and yes the huge amount of time and effort put on is unlikely to happen for WvW i can't disagree with that, but who knows, as it'll be a huge addition and a pretty good kitten one for large scale PvP. x)
While I think Mounts Would be great…, mounts overall would make World vs World pvp annoying & broken.
why don’t you rather think about a new, WvW map designed around mount mechanics (may be even their masteries) ?
EOTM and current ones untouched =).
mounts will be the main sale point in the next xpac, we’ll get a lot of skins for them(like wyvern for “can’t name it” / (insert floating animal name) for “can’t name it” …etc, and also armors / saddles/ little ornaments that you can dye after you equipped them to your pet mount, i doubt you’ll get masteries (like combat / healing / jumping / flying) out of the new maps but you’ll be able to reach out whatever event / mission / town / objective you want on a mount if thats your choice, there will be like special skills to keybind.
but overall it won’t take a big part of the gameplay out of the new maps, it’ll just be pretty and a lil’ bit faster then average maximum speed that you can obtain with any class build IMO.

this actually gave me a momentum for a good idea.
since a lot of people don’t want mounts in core tyria, and are saying it’ll break the conception of it, then make the only possible way to get them in vanilla maps is as a reward from world completion, so a character who didn’t round off the exploration will not have mounts out of the expansion maps.
only the map exploration completer character will benefit of the mount system in core tyria
this will prevent people of having unfair extra speed, so it can’t ruin the previous gap of time to actually complete world exploration.
when it comes to meta-events tho, this is about the Getting there issue.
i don’t know if people Reaching rather then Missing a meta-event due to extra mounts speed will break the actual meaning of it, but we do know that the more people getting to an event the harder it’ll be but the core idea is indeed having the biggest number of players participating !
i really dunno how it goes but i hope that player ideas are taken into account !
gliders were introduced in core tyria , even if its masteries does not exist (updrafts/leylines etc..) , and now by this mechanic you can zap more then 1 jumping puzzle (the ones who didn’t get a restriction), hell even the world completion is even better, jumping from a high cliff and survive, reaching out impossible jumps etc .., why would mounts with an increased speed ruin your experience in PvE wild maps…., if we do a list , there is like a very few maps which cannot fit mounts , like race-related starter ones , but if we take kryta/ascalon it’ll be very helpful.
And your argument that mounts can’t fit HoT or LS3 maps is simply inaccurate,
its like you’re saying Cars are not planes, they don’t have wings so they shouldn’t exist.
i personnally think that mounts will serve as a lore enrichment in the first place, and a fun game mechanic that a large part of the community will like (i’ve my own reasons to believe that),and a heavy money revenue for arenanet as they ’ll develop excellent mount skins that people will be in love with,
(edited by Fragon.7043)
Well, I am pretty excited about mounts.
But I have a few things that I am worried about:
- Being left behind by your squad if you are getting somehow dismounted by some npcs and you need to fight back annoying mobs and try to get somehow out of fight to mount up again
- Usually you run around and it’s not that big of a deal if you want to gather some mats on your way. How will this change if you and your allies ride around? Will you stop or will it be to annoying to gather stuff.
- Reviving dead players, same as above
- Even more performance issuesAnd a few questions that came to my mind:
- Will our weapons, backpieces get hidden when we are on a mount?
- Can your mount die? Will you have to revive it
- Has your mount any sort of inventory, equipment slots?
- Will we be able to go underwater with the mounts, will they be able to swim?
no one can respond to all of that , but some of what you asked is mastery stuff… i’ll go no further but you know what to do if you want some of your questions answered.
i think that all those haters are skeptical, a bit kitten when it comes to their firm opinion, but mostly skeptical XD.
if they’re only added to certain maps, I could live with that (and avoid those maps like the plague), however, if they were added to the core maps at a later date, like gliding was, I would leave and never look back.
why this big extra juicy mega thick closing to new features ?
i’m sure if oakheart was leaked before release you’ll be the first one of them all complaining about it before even waiting properly to give it a shot by yourself.
like i said before , please go back to gw1, no mounts, no dodges, no special stuff to move around the map, just a static boring character with plenty of skills to cast, and waves and waves of ennemies that you need to take one by one.
Definition of fun ain’t it !
It’s not a new feature. It’s an unbearably old topic that has been discussed to death, not popular, and not accepted.
It’s also pretty clear who has a problem with the current game. When you are telling others to leave, it might be time to look in the mirror.
you’re misinterpreting my words.
the game is wonderful as it is, the richiest part of it is the well crafted gameplay, of each and every class, some will appear slower or faster then the others, but they all have their roles. now when it comes to movement,as we’re in an rpg it should be more interesting and lore rewarding to have mounts to carry us through maps, we didn’t say WvW, neither instances nor cities, we said they should be implemented in the wilderness.
for now we’ve skills and traits in each and every class to compensate the lack of speed, but honestly, if we take 1 thief and a ‘staff gardian/engineer with swiftness combinations/staff ele with signets & teleports’ and make them travel straight ahead from the top of a map to the bottom, the thief will beat them 100% fingers in the nose.
it’d be fair for all the classes to get an equal speedlimit , so they can save their skills/traits for actual damage/support/tanky aspects, and save the speed boosts ones for instances, like pvp or WvW or raids … etc.
if they’re only added to certain maps, I could live with that (and avoid those maps like the plague), however, if they were added to the core maps at a later date, like gliding was, I would leave and never look back.

-The mounts will be released with the new expansion, they’ll have lots of masteries, they’ll have a real purpose, and not just running and being pretty.
-they’ll be actually available only in the new maps.
-the Anets teams will discuss the question of allowing them in the vanilla maps, may be with restrictions, making them only skins to ride for example.
-the idea that vanilla maps way points will be reduced is not to be dismissed.
-the game wasn’t designed for gliders, but its now giving players lots and lots of advantages in the core game, try and dare to say otherwise,so mounts with speedboosts is actually okay.
thats all the information we have right now,the players that want mounts , yes , they’ll be added and you’ll enjoy them better then any other mmo,the guys whining about progress and want to live in the past.
Go Back to GW1
and leave us alone, also bake us a cake.
why everytime we cast Overload Air (when you have affinity with air + tempest spec), your weapon that you hold in your right hand ‘almost’ always disappears???
i tried to put max graphics + supersample in render sampling category, it always does that.
is it supposed to be this way ? because sometimes it doesnt do that and actually look like better.
A fix or atleast an understandable reason why it cannot be fixed is required please.
(edited by Fragon.7043)
EDIT: it has been fixed.
in some(all?) servers transactions can’t be done.
fix it as soon as possible please.

Well on the opposite of you sir, i came to guild wars 2 because of how well its being created ,from gameplay to core design. Yet i’m one of the biggest players suffering of the lack of this particular game mechanic(mounts).
at the beginning i hated the game especially because of the hole that this left on my vision towards the content, yet i somehow forced my way through and discovered how much devs are nailing it unlike other companies even if it got its flaws here and there.
by adding this feature to the game, providing it to hurt everybody’s experience is absolutly an impossible task.but its obviously great to fullfill the desire of lots and lots of players liking the mmo genre.
and basically labeling it to other mmo mounts aspects while we have only leaked images as a proof of their existence is some of the greatest wrong things you’re bringing to this thread.
there is no significant way to make everybody happy, though they need to add new mechanics to the game, making it both evolving and refreshing.
yes you’re meant to either like it or dislike it,and you shall wait till the full release to discover what’s all about it.so for now please stop the emotional outbursts and rather then keeping the outflow of your “Early Dissatisfaction”, you can give constructive arguments. and “Stop Living in the past and get better hopes for the future”.
Good luck & Have Fun

Objectively looking at it, its just another toy to play with and there’s no reason whatsoever that it can’t be for the entirety of the game. Regardless of speedboosts, waypoints and other travel options.
Other than that I think I always said that the game doesn’t need mounts nor benefits from it. But the same could be said about gliding, tea. It’s just another fun toy for players to play with.
If they come out I just hope they come with a good background as to why and such. Not like gliders or other masteries which sort of seem slapped on the game without much further thoughts as to why you get certain abilities.
Any assumptions as what they should be or speculation is entirely depending on the amount of creative freedom of the developers. Which seems to be pretty big looking at some of the later map designs. Nothing is off the table.™
Well Said !
The only use for mounts in the existing zones for me would be if being mounted makes you non-aggro to mobs as long as you do not attack them. That would also be a huge selling point for me, since the constant aggro is one the things that I do not like in GW2.
So if there are any Horse masteries, then I hope becoming non aggro is one of them.
If they only release horses because the new Zones are so big (and low on Waypoints?) then I think that’s a cheesy way to implement them.
When horses are usable in the old zones but you get unmounted every time a mob hits you (with a ranged attack) then I do not ever see myself mounting a horse in these zones.
you’ll still get aggro’ed that’s for sure , may be you’ll just get crippled for a few seconds, then you’re good to go.
but since you’ve speed boost you’ll just run through a lot of ennemy groups in a few moments, its not that big of a change from when you were on feet, really.
“Some” masteries should go out of xpac maps also, like we now have with gliding special movements and Stealth, they should implement it in a very special way so it doesnt break the vanilla maps,Probably Only the speed boost feature IMO but we shall see.
Can’t believe this thread is still going, but I am against mounts in the traditional way. Maybe as some special mastery for specific areas it could work, but the game has a ton of big fluff on characters already. They’ve added tons of giant wings and gliders, lots of glowy stuff. Combat flashiness is still out of control as it is and adding mounts is just going to make the game feel even more generic ‘get as shiny as possible’ like many others. I remember in other MMO’s where people would block NPC view, I really do not want that in GW.
here’s what you should consider , you and much other people are afraid of everything that can look like another mmo,but you forget that there is no perfect game, ever.GW is based on mmo genre and needs to innovate in its way.GW has a very good engine, introducing different mechanics of gameplay has been done from pre-release.and of course its not for everyone.so the simple fact that a new game feature that “looks” exactly the same as any other mmo game one, doesn’t mean neither that they’re out of ideas ,nor copying, nor a sign of a big game failure.
Just put your trust in devs, they’ve ups and downs, they’re humans afterall,i’ve been personnally satistied over most of the content.don’t take it too seriously tho , this is a game and its meant to be taken as such.
Theory Crafting:
How about Legendary Mount skins , Like gliders ?? =)
Mounts:
-with speed boost as a unique feature in vanilla maps.
-with their special abilities only in xpac maps.
-Disabled in cities/Instances so we can avoid huge amount of them stacking one over another.
-selecting their Furr color, Dying their Saddles…etc
-Special skins that we can have from gemstore to customize them even more.
i know GW2 loves to distinguish itself from other mmos, and thats why players love it,then i assure you that this as a new feature is well thought out and adding it at this state of the game will just add more fun to it.Accept changes, its a game afterall and we’re meant to enjoy it.

its good for the game, hate it or love it.eh, thats way too involved for this game. I’m not saying it would be bad, just saying they won’t go that deep with them.
they probably will not be that personal, just big tools.
Nah i’m pretty sure they’ll be all classes wide pets, like they’ll build up a lil’ bit of drama and attachement to it,Glider is a tool, those are beings, may be they’ll not let you help’em to grow and such, but its highly possible that you’ll somehow tame them, they’ll surely let you name it like ranger pets, dye their Saddles…etc, also it will probably be enabled in vanilla maps but with speed boost as unique feature, their special abilities will be only used in new maps.
P.S.Oh and there is 1 pet that i wish to mount when it’ll grow up,since we’re so attached to him,Aurene!,when playing main story, i have high hopes, imo its gonna be great.
