I said “I’m tired of being the best player on the LOSING team.”

You rather want to be the worst player on the winning team don’t you

OK I see, from the answers I understand it’s nothing more than a matter of choice and there is no reason to believe that investing in conditions is a must.

I had a strange feeling that conditions (and boons) played a big role

That’s a great answer, thanks.
I knew the difference, I used both effects together because I figured that a boon for yourself is in fact a condition for your enemy. Doesn’t matter…I understand :-)

So a guardian who doesn’t play with boons is simply a bad guardian right? I think that’s clear.

Elementalists and rangers don’t use that much conditions, so it’s ok to just ignore those effects on those toons?

How about my engineer? I do a lot of WvW. Should I invest in boons and/or conditions? I don’t need in depth advice. Just would like to know whether or not I can ignore boons/conditions

I have a few characters in 30’s and one in 40’s so I’m not completely new to the game. But I’m not very experienced either.
The conditions and boons and the whole combat style in GW2 is a bit confusing. I could use a few directions.

I understand by now that conditions and boons play an important role in combat.
Is this true? Are all classes somewhat dependent from conditions and/or boons and isn’t there a single class that functions entirely pure on direct dps?

My characters are:
Elementalist
Ranger
Guardian
Engineer

Is it possible to say how dependant these classes are from boons/conditions?
Like for example 70% of damage should be direct damage and 30% damage should be condition damage for the class to function at full potential?
It may sound weird but it will help understand how important that is.

Also, who’s supposed to be the better “healer”. Elementalist, Guardian or Engineer? Up to now Engineer offers me the best group healing abilities I think.

One more thing, are combos a regular thing to do? Or do most people not use them at all?

Thanks!

I’ll share some additional experiences.

The quality and fps wasn’t really EXACTLY like it was, but very close (much better than 10fps at low settings for sure!).
But I thought it just needs some tweaking. While doing that I was getting very upset by the sound quality of the onboard controller. It was aweful.

So I installed back the Creative card, and for some reason the quality/performance went back up and now it’s exactly like before. CPU temp is not as good as first attempt when it was sitting below 60C, but much better than yesterday. But that’s probably because the CPU is doing more work now for some reason, which I find to be a good thing. It’s more leaning towards 65% (in WvW though), hence probably the small increase of temp compared to first attempt. But the game runs very well at higher quality.

Perhaps the onboard sound was taking to much resources or something. I don’t know.

Overall, compared to yesterday, I won temp by cleaning the fans and found out that I will probably never use onboard sound. Furthermore I found out that this game has a strange way of dealing with resources.

Anyway, thanks for the assistance :-)

Thanks ALPSquid for bringing up that simple and obvious, yet very important idea of re-seathing the card. I’m back in business. FPS is back like before.

I unplugged the additional power cables from the card, removed the card. Placed the card back and plugged the power cables back.

I also did a quick vacuum cleaning everywhere. Temperature is much better now (staying below 60!), but I don’t think that was an issue right?

So I think I touched something when I removed the Creative card. So stupid…

Cheers

I installed latest GPU drivers a few weeks ago but that’s not even important cause I reïnstalled them today. I accidentally removed the drivers when I wanted to remove the Creative drivers :-)

Well it would make sense if the card isn’t sitting right, I did move the computer so that I can take out the Creative card. But it’s well seated.

I’ll try to completely re-seat the card. But I have not many hopes.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I think I had the exact same issue during BETA. I was very hesitant whether or not to buy the game because of this performance issue and no helpful answers from Anet.
But somehow it worked very well when I bought it, until today.

The only thing I did was remove the creative card. Remove the driver. Remove the GPU driver. Install the GPU driver and enable the CPU visualization setting in the BIOS (but I already removed it to test).

This made the game unplayable somehow.

I think I’ll reinstall the game now, you never know. Perhaps that’s what made the difference between the BETA problem and launch for me.

Those temps are fine if they stay at that.
How much are your CPU and GPU being used while playing? Play for 5-10 minutes and take an average usage percentage of the CPU and do the same for the GPU. Report back with those numbers and we can go from there.

The game is unplayable but I ran around a bit for 5 minutes and…:
CPU: average 16%
GPU: 99% activity

CPU load is rather on the low side isn’t it

Simple question?

Did you clean the heatsink of your cpu and is your thermal paste is dry?

No, as I said I know I’ll have to do something about the CPU temperature.
But the game runs crappy even when the temperature is low. And when I say low I mean 55C-60C.
I just tried again, and temperature was 50-55.

So it’s not really relevant anymore.

Shorter version below

After a reboot of my system today, GW2 has become unplayable.
I’m not getting more than 10-11fps. When I choose best performance it sets everything to low and I still only get like 13 fps.

My system can handle much more, I used to play with high settings smoothly:
i5 processor
ATI 6870

Now first I thought it had to do with my processor dropping down, because I did get temperature warnings from the ASUS software after long play sessions, and I know I have to do something about it now that it gets hotter outside as well.

But I disabled all that Intel stuff which controls this throttling, and I get confirmation in CPU-Z where it shows a steady 3.4GHZ CPU core speed (so no throttling)

Still same result in GW2.

I rebooted the computer because I removed my Creative sound card cause I wanted to start using the onboard sound controller.
I removed all unused drivers with drivercleaner.

In CPU-Z, on the memory tab it says that the memory is running at 668mhz. Shouldn’t that be higher?

Anyway I’m not here to get my PC fixed, honestly I’m not sure it needs fixing at all. The processor is running at full capacity. Why isn’t GW2 using it?

Performance literally changed overnight. I played GW2 just fine yesterday and this dramatic performance drop never happened.
Strange thing is, it ran smooth even with temperature warnings. Now I’m not even getting in higher temperatures zones and it runs crappy :-)

Any help is appreciated.

Short version:
Sudden performance drop. Worked fine yesterday.
Throttling disabled. Temperatures are decent (game starts at lowest temperature). Still same problem.
Best performance setting sets everything to lowest settings and I still get like 13fps.
System:
CPU: i5
GPU: ATI 6870

I’m… relatively new to the game. In fact I preordered the game but played on and off (much more off than on). I don’t even have max level toon yet.
But yesterday, I had a blast in WvW. Awesome and well coordinated PVP.
I frapped about 1 hour or so till we took the keep (Piken).

I’m thinking about uploading it on youtube but there is a lot of talking (commander mostly) and I’m not sure how people feel about it, not sure if it’s a good idea to share the strategies used to the public :-). I could remove sound and just add music I guess.

Thanks for the input everyone, I’ll keep everything in mind that is said here.

Off course I understand that people don’t want to lose time on newbies, hence the reason I check it out here first.
I was hoping there would be some kind of quest leading to the dungeons, so I could try to find people with the same quest.
Honestly I don’t feel like going in with people who are doing the dungeon for the 50th time and who just want to get over with very fast.

In the other hand, I learned to not care anymore and just do my thing, it’s part of the game style, the goal is to get a long with each other.
We can either help each other or bash at each other, I’ve almost become immune to the bashing (it used to annoy me, even when it’s not me they’re targeting)

Special thanks to you Laharl, I may send you a whisper one of these days

Thanks Jazzlanna, I may have overlooked the mail, honestly there were a few confusing mails with a show me button. I’ll check that again.

But I can’t do much without a group. And since there are no level brackets and everyone is free to play with everyone, I suppose I better get in a guild instead of throwing myself in front of the lions :-)
Meh to bad…was looking forward to some quick and fun dungeon game time.

Thanks for the answers.
So everyone gets down scaled to the level of the dungeon? This means that just like in WvW, level is not an important difference in dungeons? (other than experience)

I sure am not underestimating the drama factor.

Been playing on and off since launch and have 2 toons in 30’s (32 and 35) and a few others in 20’s.
Not once have I been pushed or lured into one of the dungeons.

I actually didn’t take dungeons to serious in this game until I saw a list of dungeons, and I noticed there are quite a lot.

So how do I start? I’ve seen that at lvl 30 you can go to the first dungeon.
My elementalist is 32 which is perfect. Is there a quest somewhere that leads me to the place?
Or do I just call out for people in chat, in Lion’s Arch?
How lucky do I have to be to find a group?

Cheers

This should really be number one priority right now.
Also increase distance view, extremely important as well. I’m missing on a lot of beautiful views around me because I’m sokittenclose to my character. The distance limit should be increased like 5 times or so.
And I’m not even talking about WvW. I can’t see where I am or what is happening around me cause there is a lot of height differences and I’m to close to my character to see beyond that.

There is some truth in that.
GW2: Good tasting non alcoholic fruit coctail. It’s refreshing, it taste good, you won’t get a hangover and it’s better for your health. But there is no fire.
Addictive MMORPG: Cuba Libre or any other alcoholic coctail that makes the night last longer…or forever.

I think immersion and social contact has a lot to do with it.
Still enjoying my fruit coctail though.

Not that I want to defend WoW or anything, but it’s clear that Blizzard didn’t intend to do what Anet is doing. It would have been an added value to their game for sure.
WoW gave us a world to…it was just less alive and without jumping puzzles. If that means it’s just a map, then a map it is.
But nobody told me I couldn’t do my own jumping puzzles, the world was big enough.
And the way they combined things was fantastic, it’s hard to deny that. I’m starting to believe they did it by accident :-)

Weapon swapping for all professions?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gimano.7381

You have to keep in mind Elementalists effectively get 20 skills when they equip a weapon. Albeit it’s limited by an attunement cooldown, but that’s in place to encourage strategy.

Similar story for Engineers. Kits are basically a weapon swap (but far more interesting imo) and are not restricted by any cooldowns.

Any other class with weapon swap has access to only 10 skills on the fly, but the upside being that you can create your own strategic combination of weapon skills.

I think if you understand this, you can see Anet’s logic in how they disabled weapon swapping for those classes, because weapon swapping is intrinsically built into the class.

The 20 skills are not really unique, a large amount of the skills have somewhat the same purpose. But I figured out this would be the reason why Elementalists don’t have weapon swapping.
Right now we can switch between certain “roles” but we can’t switch between ranges.
I guess it’s a choice that has been made when they designed the profession.
Because they could have distributed some of the weapon skills to attunements instead of weapons if they wanted to.

Are elementalist so strong compared to others Wraith?

I’m a starting elementalist. And I find it hard to play with daggers all the time, to me it’s a situational setup just like the sword for a ranger.

IMO This game is not anti social, but lacks social aspects.

Creating a party/group isn’t needed because of how loot and kill credits work. As far as I know you can just help someone kill a mob and you get credit for it.
I have seen certain mobs in zones which requires more than one people. I’ve seen people calling out other people on the chat to kill a big mob somewhere.
So you do need each other at certain points

You can’t do certain DEs alone, so you wait for a few others to join. Isn’t that grouping? You end up doing the DE with 3-5-10-20 people…isn’t that grouping? What’s the difference?

I can’t comment on the community feeling cause I just started playing the game, even though I pre-ordered. But yeah I see what you mean, it’s awesome to have a community, to know people for their skills, or bad attitude etc

Sometimes I think Anet game developers must have the patience of a Saint when dealing with all the people constantly contradicting themselves about what they want in GW2.

They’re probably not always the same people so they’re not contradicting themselves, it’s just different opinions from different people.

It’s starting to concern me. I’m really starting to get into this game. But I’m afraid I’m going to get frustrated from playing different toons.
Right now I have a lvl 15 and 3 lvl 5-8. I kinda like all of those toons, but I frequently feel an urge to switch.

Anyone else going through this and perhaps even enjoying it? How do you deal with it?
I don’t think this has anything to do with being a altoholic or not, altoholics usually level one toon at a time.
