Sword Dagger, Amazing defensive and offensive capabilities not receiving enough attention!
in PvP
Posted by: Greed.1702
The speed of the sword attacks make auto attacks harder to land as well as the skills of sword/dagger combination have no extreme burst damage. It is consistent but not high burst, and a death blossom build also allows for evasions during skills. Ur damage by using a dagger sword build is severely weaker compared to the dagger dagger specs. This build, however, does have the most amount of cc.

I play 2 toons a Thief and a Elementalist and personally I think a thief is far harder to play. It took me 4 days to get my Ele to 40 it took me far longer to get my thief to 40. Your by far the squishiest toon in the game, to do enough damage to make your toon effective you need to sacrifice health and toughness. When you go invisible and your targeted by a range toon you still get hit. If a Mesmer has one of its split personalities on you (for lack of a better term) your going to keep getting hit. Now if your seen coming you are going to be spammed by every AoE other players can throw at you. and HS really is not that powerful its only good against other Squishy toons. Any toon with high armor I hit for max 1500 with weapon damage at 3250 and about 3000 at 1/3 health, when it hits, about 1 out of 5 times it misses. I read someone here on this forum state that they saw someone hit for 24k in 4 hits please tell me how they did it because I have never do that much damage. I think I might of hit for 6k once since I’ve played PvP. I play alot of the random PvP with the PvP browser at level 80 with the free PvP gear. I do FAR better damage as an Elementalist than I do as a thief. All this whining is pathetic I bet if you took a look at the average times per PvP match the different classes die you’ll see that the thief is number one class that is killed on average per match. I bet if they did statistics on deaths/kill ratio you would see a this is one of the lowest on the food chain. If you nerf Heartseeker you’ll ruin the class, but that said I would gladly see HS be removed if I could get a boost in condition damage and another bleed skill.
There already exists a condition spec that has an amazing ability to single-handed-ly defeat a group of 3 or less mediocre players with ease. The ability to evade almost nearly any attack and continuously apply cripple to an opponent is by far the most aggravating thing for any class to go up against. This is called the Death Blossom Build.

First things first, Anet need to add a “Skirmish” / “Wargame” feature to allow top tier teams to go head to head with each other at any time that they want to.
Also
Adding a feature to GW2 to allow players to view other teams games from different POV’s would be incredible, I think a feature like this would have to be limited to say allowing 4 players to be invited as viewers (2 per team) to avoid any type of lagg or server delay / potential crash.
By just adding 2 features like this, will allow casters to view top tier games from any POV that they wish to view as well as record the matches and commentate the matches live! And Skirmish / Wargames would allow top tier teams to avoid jumping into random tournament games and be able to have competitive matches when-ever they want to. (To avoid boosting / exploitation of any sort, Glory should not be awarded for Skirmishes)
I agree completely with both of these points you raise. Teams desperately need a ranking system so they can accurately compare themselves with other teams , accumulated glory just doesn’t cut it at all. Im sure Arena net is going to implement some sort of elo rating system. Skirmishes and War games are also a must so teams can organise matches with ease.
The Observer/Spectator mode is crucial for this game to be a proper e-sports but I can understand that this wasn’t needed to launch the game so we should be seeing this feature forth coming.
Thanks for your input and thanks for helping develop GW2 into an e-sport.
If you are interested in casting some top ranking team PvP matches, I’d be more than willing to provide footage for you.

Guide: How To Survive Longer Against Heart Seeker Thieves in Tournament PvP

Cloak and Dagger is 6 initiative, which is half of a standard initiative bar and just under half, when traited. Add in the Revealed debuff that stops stealth for 3 seconds and it’s not THAT frequent. You actually need to LAND C&D in order to stealth as well, which is not always the easiest thing to do vs skilled players. If you miss it, bye bye 6 initiative.
What people fail to realize about Heartseeker spamming thieves is that these guys are utter pushovers. They run around with 10-14k health and < 1000 toughness. Look at them wrong and they crumple. Congrats, you win. Instead of going on the defensive against HS spamming thieves, try going on the offensive. If you get multiple thieves on you, then you are probably dead – try to gtfo. If that fails, after you die, be on the lookout for them and avoid them unless you have the numbers to confront them.
Adapt people. Glass cannons are just, what the name implies. Throw 1 cc on them, hit them hard and they will be history.
This is absolutely correct. The important part is to remember that every build has pros and cons. When you’re able to find the weak points of a particular build and capitalize upon it, you’ll be able to defeat the player playing that certain build and ultimately feel better about yourself.

Ultimately each class has its pros and cons. The player behind the class is what counts. Maybe, just maybe, that one thief or that one mesmer is just better than you

It’s not Heartseeker alone that’s the problem, it’s the combination of burst damage, inability to heal that damage if you’re poisoned (which you probably are) and stealth that’s the issue. A Dagger/Dagger Rogue with 20 points in Shadow Arts (Last Refuge->Infusion of Shadow->Meld with Shadows->Patience) can Cloak and Dagger quite frequently, leaving you with very little time to fight back.
The main complaint of most players in structured and tournament pvp is that HS spamming thieves are auto win. The other builds for thieves, such as backstab oriented, db condition oriented are also extremely viable and maybe even the best. Pistol whip is another build that can be taken into consideration as “over powered” by some, but in my honest opinion after playing all these builds, there really is no different to power as it is the player skill. Each build has its own pros and cons.

That sounds like a very large amount of information to execute and plan for, just to counter a single skill.
It’s actually a simple thing. Timing your dodge for when it would mitigate the most amount of damage and knowing when to use your cc.

so what do i do when the thief lands 2 heartseekers for 9k dmg and i am dead because i was half health? do i not worry about those 2 first heartseekers?
Oh wait, that is right, NO OTHER CLASS IS PUTTING OUT THAT MUCH DMG, THAT FAST FOR THAT LITTLE OF INVESTMENT.

IF youre sitting at half health, with no heal skill up, and youre in range of a thief to hit you with his first heart seeker, then you need to work on your map awareness. In that position, you’re pretty much dead unless you have all ur cooldowns up, such as escape utility

Certain classes have skills that are on moderate cooldowns that increase movement speed or cover short distances are those that are considered mobile. An example, a guardian would be considered not mobile as besides swiftness boons, that have no other means of decreasing travel time.

The ideal meta right now is having “bunker” type characters/classes defend points and “roamers”, those with high mobility, will “assist” the point holders and attempt for other on the map objectives. Of course there are other methods such as zerging, but as a full time tournament pvper, this is so far the most useful strategy utilized by higher rank pvp teams.

As a pure PvP player with an extensive amount of experience, I’ve come up with some tips for those who are struggling against the alleged “OP Heart Seeker” thief. As BG PvP (spvp) is a zerg style of play, this will rarely apply :P
HS is a skill combo finisher, thus the damage is greatest when used to deal the final blow to an opponent. The skill information shows a significant increase in base damage in correlation to the health remaining on the opponent. Although the common knowledge is to “dodge” the heartseekers, many believe it is impossible to do so. But that’s not true.
Don’t worry when the first one or two HS hit you. Remain calm and respond with the following:
IF Haste is applied to HS thief: immediately dodge roll TWICE as soon as you realize the thief is using HS. The duration of haste will deplete completely and thus you mitigate any damage dealt and they are instantly put in a horrible position (0 – regenerating initiative and no endurance).
IF No Haste, spend your precious endurance dodging the critical heart seekers (aka when you drop below a “safe” health point count). Determining what is safe and what is not is by your own judgment.
When in the difficult situation of facing more than one opponent, one being a HS oriented thief, use your cc (crowd control) skills on the thief ( or the highest threat target), and escape to safety to either help another teammate or backdoor a point.
Thieves who spam Heart Seeker are not good thieves. Those who wait before using their 3-initiative cost skill to finish an opponent are the ones that succeed. HS was not meant to be spammed when your opponent is full health, the damage it deals is not considerable in comparison with some other skills. With exponential growth, a well timed dodge + heal will protect you from sure death.
As for the fact that you just cant run away from a HS thief, average distance covered by an average HS thief is 4 Heart seekers. Without trickery spec.
As dodge rolling increases distance between your opponent and yourself, your best bet is to use your CC after they spam their heart seeker and after successfully dodging the 4. Count.
I’ll edit with more information as I’m currently busy but this should help some of you become better at dealing with HS build Thieves
Feel free to add me in-game if there are any additional questions as well as other thief related questions or comments.

The general thief in BG’s have no idea how to do any of this as the main strategy within spvp is zerging with groups of 2 or more. In tournament pvp, the 1v1 situations are more likely, yet eventually end within 20 seconds or less because this game is team based. In order to achieve victory, rotations/teammate support is a definite must.

With 30k health, no pure hs thief should be able to take you down regardless of whether you dodge or not. A pure damage / critical thief build leaves the thief with roughly 14k health. That’s half of your total health point count, and definitely damage wise, the first few heart seekers will do nothing more than 2k maximum, even in crits. This is from my personal experience.
This is true, but the loss is like an exponential graph. I often don’t feel like I am losing, and then out of no where my health drops crazy fast. With the stealth, fights last a long time and I am usually whittled down. While time might seem to be on a conditionmancer’s side, in this case it isn’t. Stealth stops me from stacking too much bleed, and in the event that I do, Thief heal removes it. Plus, do not underestimate what a 3 second fear can do to your health pool.
Definitely agree with you. Yet the situation you are explaining is of a more experienced thief player and not the “heart seeker spammer” that the majority of heart seeker builds are considered. If the thief is able to outplay you by using steal when you fear, by countering every skill with his toolbelt, then he has successfully defeated you through his player skill by utilizing everything within his toolbelt. In a complete 1v1, elites, utilities, etc are all used in the sole purpose of defeating your enemy. Again, personal experience.

More or less: Realize its a build that gives you trouble. Learn that build. Find counters. Use counter.
Not really…
As a Necro it feels as if the class is designed to perfectly counter me. They tear through my 30k health crazy fast.
Their heal stealths them and removes bleed (a staple of quite a few Necros).
They get increased damage out of said stealth and their auto attack applies a nice poison which minimizes my healing.
If I slow/fear/stun them and get distance, they tele to me with steal (which often gives them a full 3 second fear with which to kill me).
Then they HS to their little heart’s content killing any other distance I may have got on them. This damage always, always tops the kill chart in any pvp at usually 15000+.
Have I won against them? Sure. But, it takes almost flawless dodges and use of my blind well, and often my Plague elite skill.
This is from my personal experience.

does heartseeker kill someone 100% of the time? no. Can 2 of the 5+ heartseekers be countered with evade if you happen to be at full endurance? yes. The problem is the other 3 heartseekers not to mention the X amount that come as initiative ticks(or ramps depending on spec) back up. Couple this with the fact that thieves guild, auto attack, poisons, HASTE, and other abilities are still playing a huge factor and you have a very lopsided DPS class.
The point of the thief class is to make it the high mobility, high damage assassin. Your role in a team is to “assassinate” the weaker armored damage/support roles. In a larger scale battle, if you are in the situation that you are ganked by one or more members of the opponents team, it doesn’t matter if the thief is a hs build or not. You’re going to die unless they just stand there. The point of the game is to take the strengths and weaknesses of each class and play a sort of “counter” to and per class. This is my opinion.

In higher level tpvp, being in the downed state is not that big of a deal as (from experience), teammates are able to rally you.
Guild: Fwied Wice | Pure Tournament PvP Team | Stream: http://www.twitch.tv/thecomicalasian
It seems to me that the primary issue people have here is that they want to fight a HS Thief straight up, the way they fight other classes and that’s just not a good idea. Both HB for Warrior and HS for Thief can be avoided and countered IF you change your tactics to fit the situation.
And of course that’s not going to work everytime. If you’re fighting another player and a HS Thief jumps you, you’re going to die.. but that would likely happen no matter what class was the one that jumped you. If you see a Thief, you should be CCing prior to any straight DPS because that’s the best way to hinder HS spam. Same with Warriors planning to use HB. If you see the wind up, get the heck out of there.
If you don’t want to have to change your tactics depending on the class you’re fighting then what’s the point of even having different classes? May as well just be Rock Em Sock Em Robots.
I understand that people hate dieing but since there’s no Arena (DM) style PvP, a death in the short run shouldn’t be a big deal. Play the objectives and stick with your team and even if you die, your team should be able to win (obviously there are more factors than this, but you get the point).
And yes I do play a Thief, but I play a Condition Thief that doesn’t use D/D. I don’t even use Dagger as my Main hand weapon.
I am not sure what your experience of Tournament PvP is, but in the situation of a 1v1 due to the fact that you are a point holder and a roamer (Thief) engages on you to attempt to take the point, a death matters significantly. The speed of which the offensive player is able to take down the defensive also matters since most Gladiator + ranked teams respond quickly to calls for help. A heart seeker thief, in all honesty, is not that over powered. After going through the horrible experience of playing against Death Blossom thieves at high level tpvp, it really outshines the hs build.
Guild: Fwied Wice | Pure Tournament PvP Team | Stream: http://www.twitch.tv/thecomicalasian
As a full time thief player myself (IGN: Reposition), I’ve found that the ability itself is somewhat on the overpowered side. For those who believe that it is a single button “spam to win” skill, it truly is not. The average thief without the trickery spec as a total initiative of 12. With regeneration skills, it IS possible to use Heart Seeker (costs 3 initiative) more than 4 times in quick succession. The thing is, however, Heart Seeker’s damage scales as the opponent’s hp is decreased. With a full hp bar, the skill literally does about as much as an auto attack. Of course, as the HP of the target decreases, the skill begins to deal a significant amount of increased damage. Nearing the 50% mark, with the correct traits, the damage is possibly amplified to an instant down (7-9k criticals). From personal experience, those who apply the utility skill “Haste” and then continue to spam Heart Seeker only succeed if they are lucky. What they can do about the skill to make it less of a problem is to increase the initiative cost slightly, thus the “mindless” spammers who do not understand how to utilize other forms of the thief’s toolkit are eliminated from spamming the skill enough times to get the “one button kill.”
If you have any counter arguments or want specific tips about any type of Thief build, contact me in-game or via skype.
