We do indeed have internets in Devon. Also rain atm Hope you enjoy your holiday in our beautiful county.
I’m an ex-WoW player too – my first GW2 char was a guardian and I found it pretty easy to adapt to. There is a wide choice of weapons, so you can make a build that is more defensive and ‘tanky’, or you can go for more direct damage, with burns, blinds etc – you also provide very valuable support and healing for your party. With the new expansion, rangers will get a druid-type specialisation, but we don’t have much detail on that yet. But all classes are valuable – just find one that’s fun for you.
Coming from WoW, you need to adjust your mind-set from ‘race to endgame then start playing’ to a more relaxed style of levelling. Take your time to enjoy all that the game has to offer – you won’t ‘out-level’ zones, even though you will gain xp very fast from everything you do. It does require some adjustment to lose the habits of a gear-driven mmo, but when you do, you will find the game rewarding in a very different way.
In one sentence? It’s not at all like WoW . PVP is entirely optional, exploration is very rewarding, the community is (mostly) very friendly, and the game is just a lot of fun, especially for a casual player.

Could you look at ticket 609799 please, on behalf of my friend who was hacked 3 days ago and cannot log in to this site. Thank you.
I’m 63, and just delighted to see so many other older players. I was a ‘spectator’ of my sons’ computer games all the way back to the days of the C64, but didn’t play until they dragged me into World of Warcraft in my mid-50s. I’ve now quit that game ( got tired of the gear tread-mill) and I’m having loads of fun in GW2.
Like several others, I do struggle with anything involving a lot of jumping, and rely on mesmer portals from friends far too much.
Something that might be related to this topic – I have been very impressed with the GW2 community, both on the forums & in-game. As a new player, I have found almost everyone kind & patient, and it is much appreciated.
Hi there, fellow ex-WoWer Like you, I really struggled with this game after the more static combat of WoW. But, I’ve only being playing for a couple of months & have reached 80 with my guardian, and if I can do it, anyone can. (I’m not joking, I’m waaay past the age when I should have stopped playing games ).
Dying in WoW these days is a rare thing, outside of raids. I too died a lot when I started my guardian – and you know what? it doesn’t matter. You go back, & this time you remember to use your virtues, signets etc, maybe change your weapon, and try again.
Or go back & practise some more on lvl 2 wasps – you will still get xp. I’m having a blast in this game, even though I’ve only a vague idea of how some things work; don’t be intimidated by all the ‘pro’ players who have been playing since launch & were probably more skilled to start with.
I can’t help much with the technical side of stats, build etc, but if you’re on EU & need a similarly sucky friend, feel free to add me
